[It’s been a bit since a book has caught me and refused to let me go. Black history, particularly Black American history, is a snowball of triumphs and pain. It’s a story of resilience that has passed through generations like a chant: you shall overcome. Over and over again collectively we rise to the challenge amongst a country that has always tried to devalue our humanity.\ \ I’ve read memoirs, history books, and historical fiction over the years. They all are a piece of a great puzzle, but When Trees Testify brings forth a perspective I’ve never thought of before.\ \ I'm so happy that I had the opportunity to ask Beronda L. Montgomery about her new release.\ \ About Beronda L. Montomgery \ \ Beronda L. Montgomery, PhD, is a writer, researcher, and scholar who pursues a common theme of understanding how individuals perceive, respond to, and are impacted by the environments in which they exist. Her primary laboratory-based research has been focused on the responses of photosynthetic organisms (i.e., plants and cyanobacteria) to external light cues. Additionally, Beronda pursues this theme in the context of effective mentoring and leadership of individuals, and the role of innovative leaders in supporting success. To learn more and follow her blog, check out her website here.\ \ Author Interview With Beronda L. Montgomery What inspired you to write this book? \ \ I was first inspired to explore the relationship between trees and African American history after encountering a more than 400-year old oak tree while visiting the site of a former plantation near Charleston, SC and realizing that the tree would have been alive and standing when ancestral African Americans had been enslaved there.\ \ Your book touched upon hundreds of years of history. What time period do you feel like you learned the most from? \ \ It's difficult to pinpoint exactly; however knowledge that I gained about the early 1900s in my research on Blackdom, NM in the chapter on apple trees was very new to me. Also, on a personal level, looking into the massacre in Elaine, AR in 1919 was very moving because of the connection to my maternal grandfather and family history.\ \ I have never thought about the various trees and the symbolism they have with Black history. Was there a particular tree you encountered that has stuck with you the most? \ \ In terms of visiting trees, the Angel Tree outside of Charleston has been deeply impactful due to its massive size, the population of resurrection ferns that it hosts, and the fascinating history of the tree, including its link to Civil Rights activist Septima PoinsetteClark.\ \ What was your research process like? \ \ The process was varied in that for same chapters, including Oak, Willow, and Apple, I made a decision to travel. I also spent significant time doing traditional research of reading; yet, this project also took me into archives and deep into genealogical records for my own family connections.\ \ What do you hope readers take away from this book? \ \ I hope that readers may learn something new about African American history, learn about new Black botanical experts and expertise, but also walk away with increase curiousity about trees in general, including those that they share space with.\ \ Trees and Black Americans are entwined throughout the book. What was the most surprising story you discovered that brought together the two topics? \ \ The most surprising was the connection with willows and family history in a massive massacre in Arkansas in 1919.\ \ There are many types of trees, but in your book you explored seven along with cotton. How did you choose the tree species to focus on? Was there one that surprised you? \ \ I started with trees that many might see as associated with Black history - oaks and poplar. Others such as willow, pecan and the cotton shrub were added due to connections to family history that at the same time were connected to the larger history of African Americans in the US.\ \ How do you hope When Trees Testify influences conversations about race and the role of Black botanical history? \ \ I hope that it will inspire individuals to embrace a dual history of Black Americans and botanical history in the US. Many are aware of the trauma associated with chattel slavery, even as many are not aware of the depth of this trauma. Fewer are aware of the depth of agricultural expertise that enslaved Africans contributed to the success of agriculture in the US. I hope that When Trees Testify offers the opportunity to being to understand that Black botanical legacy and to celebrate it.\ \ Thank you so much Beronda for allowing me to ask you questions about your book. If you haven't already, grab a copy of When Trees Testify. You won't regret it!\ \

Sourcebooks Unboxing: Where The Wildflowers Grow
Thank you so much Sourcebooks Landmark for sending a copy of this to my!
About the book: Leigh is the last of the Wildes. She knows this because she watched them all die.
Grief never truly fades and even as the tragedy haunts her, Leigh carries on, because survival is in her blood. So, when the transport bus taking her to prison careens off the road, killing everyone onboard except her, she does what’s in her nature. She survives.
While searching for a place to hide, Leigh stumbles upon an unexpected sanctuary: a flower farm in rural Alabama tucked away from the world. What Leigh doesn’t expect is the found family there who have built something from the wreckage of their own lives. Especially Jackson, the farm’s owner, who sees through Leigh’s defenses, offers her small moments of tenderness, encourages her to face her own tragedies. Slowly, Leigh finds peace with the hard pace and soft nature of the farm, taking comfort in the life blooming around her. Maybe she’s not beyond redemption, not too broken for something good. And maybe, just maybe, Leigh starts to heal.
But the past isn’t so easily buried.
No matter how far she runs, the truth of who she is and the ghosts of the Wildes follow. And when those secrets catch up to her, threatening everything she’s come to love, Leigh will have to truly face what she can survive.

[When we entered Atlantic City, Georgia, we immediately looked up bookstores to visit before going to our hotel.\ \ All The Tropes was our first stop.\ \ About All The Tropes \ \
Nestled in the heart of Kirkwood, All the Tropes is Atlanta’s only bookstore dedicated entirely to the Romance genre. All the Tropes is more than a bookstore; it's a sanctuary for dreamers and romantics, a community space where the timeless allure of Romance literature is celebrated.\ \ You know how you go to a place and the vibes are super cool? This is one of them.\ \ \ \ It's a small but well curated romance bookstore with a diverse grouping of genres and beautiful decorations.\ \ \ \ They even have a bookstore cat! He was such a good boy and huge. I love large fluffy cats so he checked all of my boxes.\ \ \ \ I left with a sticker of him.\ \ \ \ Afterwards we stopped for food at the Hard Rock Cafe and I had to snap a shot of this piece of Stevie Nicks artwork. I love the design and stained glass vibe of it.\ \ \ \ That night Michelle and I ventured to the Georgia Aquarium. I was most excited to see the Whale Sharks along with the Hammerhead Sharks. I find sharks to be so beautiful. Watching them glide through the water with such precision and grace was amazing. It's such an amazing space and I'm so happy I had the chance to visit.\ \

[The closest McKay Used Books is in Manassas, Virginia. On our road trip, we stopped there.\ \ I always love stopping there because I truly never know what I'll find. That makes it super fun. They offer new and used books along with other collectible items like records and video games.\ \ I go for the books (even though if I ever run into a copy of Gallop Racer 2006, I will surely pick it up).\ \ \ \ Aisles and aisles of every genre fill the huge store.\ \ \ \ I gravitate towards fiction and they often have special editions. My score was the Fairyloot Sleep Like Death by Kalynn Bayron! It's so pretty.\ \ \ \ From there we went to Buc-ee's. I'd never been to one before and had no idea what to expect but even what I encountered still wasn't what I imagined. Amazing.\ \

[August was quite a book traveling month for me. New Voices, New Rooms was the destination in Atlanta, Georgia. Between there and Enola, Pennsylvania, there are many bookstores.\ \ The first one we stopped at was Miss Willa's Bookshop in West Virginia.\ \ About Miss Willa's Bookshop \ \
Miss Willa's Bookshop, located in Charles Town, West Virginia, is an independent bookstore that offers romance-only novels written by authors both well-known and debut, traditional and indie.\ \ Owned by # 1 New York Times Bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout, the bookshop is named after Willa Colyns, a character from JLA's Blood and Ash series. When JLA decided she wanted to fulfill one of her dreams by opening a bookstore, she immediately knew she wanted to showcase the genre that not only started her love of reading but also writing.\ \ I love that so many authors are opening up their own indie bookstores. When Jennifer Armentrout announced her new venture in opening up a bookstore in West Virginia, I was stoked. \ \ I knew I wanted to go there, and the group of us made the pitstop on our way to Georgia.\ \ \ \ It's such a cute shop.\ \ \ \ I loved the decorations.\ \ \ \ What a cool wall.\ \ \ \ This is so funny to me and matches the vibes of JLA’s books!\ \ \ \ There were many romance books of all sub-genres. \ \ \ \ Classics of the genre were on the shelves along with their more recent counterparts.\ \ \ \ A group photo was a must.\ \ \ \ Truth.\ \ \ \ I left with a Beverly Jenkins novel that I didn't already own. And of course a sticker commemorating the occasion. I love buying stickers from bookstores. If I don't have space for more books or don't find a book I really want, I still like to support stores. So if there's a sticker or postcard, I'm there for it.\ \ \ \ I can’t wait to visit again!](https://beverlybooks.binderybooks.com/item/qAHHzml93J2HQW3By7Cg/)

[Wandering with no direction can lead you to a bookstore.\ \ That’s how I came upon Mast Books. I saw the word books while walking around and decided to go in.\ \ About Mast Books \ \
Established in 2010 by Bryan Leitgeb and James McKee, Mast Books is a bookstore and gallery space located in New York City’s East Village.\ \ Mast Books curates a rotating selection of rare and out-of-print titles presented alongside contemporary publications from small press publishers worldwide.\ \ This was probably the most unique bookstore I visited. \ \ \ \ I so enjoyed seeing this old copy of Fear and Loathing On The Campaign.\ \ \ \ It was a different sort of bookstore I’d visited which was nice to see. The idea of positioning a space in this way made this a very unique spot.\ \ \ \ Across the street I did see a 28 Years Later advertisement. I love zombies and the whole 28 Days/Year series. I’m one of those where the zombies in books can be symbols for something else and deep meanings or they can just be a fun antagonist in a post-apocalyptic world. Anything goes for me. \ \

[I mean how much cooler does it get? It’s a bookstore and a bar.\ \ About Book Club Bar \ \
Book Club Bar opened in November 2019 and serves as a community hub of the East Village: a new kind of independent bookstore featuring top-notch cocktails, beer, wine, and coffee. Owners Erin Neary and Nat Esten have been proud to call the East Village home for over a decade. This spirited and dynamic neighborhood is reflected in the store: from the cozy living room-feel decor, to curated book inventory, locally roasted coffee, and NY state craft beers.\ \ I loved the vibes and lighting in this store.\ \ \ \ Book Club Bar menu featured literary themed drinks.\ \ \ \ The shelves were full of books that ranged in genre.\ \ \ \ There’s never a bad time to see Kennedy Ryan’s Skyland series. \ \ \ \ I loved this spot and next time I’ll have to grab a drink! \ \

[Bindery Books hosted the Spring Releases at P&T Knitwear Bookstore and Coffee. I visited the store early so I knew where I was going.\ \ About P&T Knitwear \ \
In 1952, founder Bradley Tusk's grandfather, Hymie Tusk, and his business partner Mike Pudlo opened the original P&T Knitwear, a small shop selling sweaters and\ \ collared shirts at 37½ Allen Street in New York. Check it out in the photo!) The two men survived the Holocaust and met in a Displaced Persons Camp in Germany after the war. They emigrated to the US, determined to create better lives for themselves and their families through sheer grit and hustle. When they first opened on the Lower East Side, Pudlo and Tusk couldn't even afford enough merchandise to fill the store. They stocked the shelves with empty boxes, hoping to give the illusion of\ \ a bustling business. Soon, their creativity and fearlessness paid off. Today's P&T Knitwear honors our namesake by giving back to the very same neighborhood that made Tusk and Pudlo's story, and so many others' like them,\ \ possible\ \ This was a good choice to host an event!\ \ \ \ I loved the space and how much character the whole store had. Books were everywhere with various types of shelving.\ \ \ \ It was just nice and welcoming. Waves at Lucy Score\ \ \ \ Loved the bookcase of recommendations. \ \

We believe that books are indeed magic, and that literature is one of the best ways to create empathy, transportation, and transformation.\ \ Emma Straub and Michael Fusco-Straub own the stores. Emma Straub is a widely acclaimed novelist and is the daughter of horror author, Peter Straub.\ \ \ \ It’s always interesting to see how bookstores stage their store. I strolled around the shelves and saw favorites and new-to-me releases.\ \ \ \ Staff picks rock, as you know. I enjoyed Kill Creatures by Rory Power.\ \ \ \ I spotted a Bindery title amongst the books!\ \ \ \ Before leaving, I made sure to take a photo with their mural!\ \

[I love book signings. The volume of books signed to me shows just how vast my collection is. I enjoy the whole experience: meeting authors, talking with fellow readers and swapping book recommendations.\ \ \ \ When I returned from Tennessee, I ventured to Pocket Books in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.\ \
Pocket Books ‘is an eclectic feminist bookstore owned & operated by three besties with a passion for great literature.’\ \ \ \ It’s a beautiful spot with a great curation of books and merch.\ \ \ \ Megan Becker was celebrating the release of her newest novel, Band Mates. She was in conversation with Lindsay Hameroff. They were great together and were so funny. I laughed a lot during their talk.\ \ About Band Mates \ \ By all appearances, Mia Montgomery has it all: a successful career in music, a great apartment in L.A., and Julie-her best friend since kindergarten. What Mia doesn't have is the man she's been in love with since they were teenagers: Julie's brother, Elliott.\ \ Mia expects to spend a trip home writing new songs for her band and reconnecting with Julie. But then there's Elliott, shirtless in the kitchen of his parents' house on her first night back, and it doesn't take him long to suggest a mutually beneficial arrangement while Mia's in town.\ \ Torn between a decades-old promise to Julie, a growing friendship with Elliott's daughter, and her own desires, Mia navigates the complexities of pursuing anything with Elliott-especially when they both seem all too willing to break the rules they've put in place.\ \ Will Mia and Elliott finally drum up a romance?\ \ Or will their well-orchestrated plans hit all the wrong notes?\ \ After their talk, Megan and Lindsay were available to sign their books.\ \

Here’s one of my favorite copies of Misery.
Since today is the release of @jointhelongwalk , here’s one of my favorite copies of Misery. It has a step back featuring the cover of the main character’s novel, but the Easter egg is to look at the hero’s face. Who is that man? @stephenking ! He was the model for the hero in the picture. It think it’s such a fun part of this edition. #stephenking#thelongwalk#horror#vintagehorror
