Handsome con artist Ulises has long charmed lonely women via letters to steal their money, but money is hard to come by in 1940s Mexico. Ulises knows his looks won't last forever, and he's desperate to get his hands on a real fortune. He thinks he's found it when he captivates his newest correspondent, Perla, the owner of a small-town boardinghouse in picturesque Veracruz. But when he meets her, he finds something he didn't expect. The woman has a niece, Inés, who is as observant as she is desperate to escape her aunt’s household. When Inés discovers Ulises' true intentions, she wants in on the scheme. They’ll convince her aunt that Ulises is a great catch, Perla will marry him, and her money will vanish. Easy, fast and clean. But Perla is not the desperate, silly spinster Ulises imagines. She harbors secrets. And although Ulises does not believe in true romance, Inés is more alluring than he bargained on. Suddenly, a simple plan may become perilously complicated. Venture into the streets of a small town where the patina of convention and good manners conceals a cauldron of avarice and lust. I love fashion and I think featuring more of that side of myself would not only enable me to express myself more authentically and creatively on social media, but also allow me to explore Latinx fashion brands and to support them in addition to Latine authors. To that end, I've tentatively started a new series on Tik Tok highlighting my favorite Latine brands on TT shop. I'll also be sharing more of my outfits and make-up in stories and little wrap-ups like this on on Threads this morning. \\ \\ Many of you found me because of my love of Latine books, so let me be clear, the goal of Bien Leidos hasn't changed, just the method in which I interact and show up on social media. Allowing myself the freedom to fully express who I am and everything I love should help me beat this social media slump I've been feeling for quite a while now. You'll still receive this weekly newsletter of upcoming Latine releases. Bien Leidos book club and Discord is literally part of my DNA, so don't expect any changes on those 2 fronts. I appreciate you being along for the ride and for your support. It means the world to be me; you have no idea.\\ \\ Regarding this week's releases, there is only 1 Latine releases this week, so I'm going to share all the remaining March Latine releases on my radar with you so you can get ahead on pre-ordering. But before we do that, let's catch up where all the action and conversations happen...\\ \\ ****BIEN LEIDOS BOOK CLUB & DISCORD UPDATES**** \\ \\ WE HAVE MODS! Be on the lookout to improvements and changes to your Discord experience!\\ \\ Already mentioned on Discord, but I wanted to give you a quick heads up to expect The Intrigue by Silvia Moreno-Garcia as our August book club pick. She mentioned this week on Threads that when she writes outside of horror/fantasy genres, her numbers aren't as strong. I've fallen off my SMG train a bit with everything going on in the world, so I wanted to remind you that The Intrigue releases July 14th. You can pre-order on Bookshop or LibroFM.\\ \\ We will be voting on upcoming June and July picks, but here are upcoming book club selections so you can get your TBR in order.\\ \\ **FICTION**\\ \\ March: Now I Surrender by Alvaro Enrigue and translated by Natasha Wimmer (we will be chatting with Alvaro on Monday, April 6th in lieu of sprints at 8:00 PM--invite to register will go out soon)\\ \\ April: The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende\\ \\ May: Asiri and the Amaru by Natalia Hernandez\\ \\ June: TBD -- will be voting on Discord soon\\ \\ July: TBD -- will be voting on Discord soon\\ \\ August: The Intrigue by Silvia Moreno-Garcia\\ \\ **NONFICTION**\\ \\ March - April: Everyone Who Is Gone is Here by Jonathan Blitzer\\ \\ May - June: Accordien Eulogies by Noe Alvarez\\ \\ I'll do a formal post updating all our upcoming reads, but wanted you to have the latest list of upcoming reads.\\ \\ Finally, this is your evergreen reminder that we meet every Monday night on Discord and sprint--whether you're trying to get ahead with your current read or need to clean the house, we're chatting, working, chatting, working, all evening long if you ever want some virtual company.\\ \\ ****March 17th Latine Releases**** ****ROMANTASY**** \\ \\ Daughter of the Hunt by K. NEVER!!! \\ \\ I used my morning to record some Youtube content before temps got too high. I don't know about where you are, but it's HOT here in Los Angeles. \\ \\ This week is a little quieter than last in terms of new content, but I have been reading quite a bit. Why so little new content, you ask? Well, I prioritized time with friends this week, seeing a wonderful Suki Waterhouse concert on Thursday and brunching with girlfriends on Saturday. I've also been suffering from migraines a bit more this week, likely due to the high temps. But I'm determined to get back in the content saddle in anticipation of August 1's newsletter. If you've not signed up for my monthly newsletter, now's the time to do so. \\ \\ Ok, let's talk books! Since we last chatted I finished **_The Parisian Heist_** and **_Should the Waters Take Us_**, both on audio. **_The Parisian Heist_** was a fun summer suspense novel full of art and art history. It's perfect for the type of folks who gravitate to historic museums while traveling. I really enjoyed getting to know Jo Van Gogh, the sister-in-law of Vincent who helped ensure his art and legacy. 4⭐️\\ \\ **_Should the Waters Take Us_** was not at all what I expected, but I did very much enjoy it. Far more literary than historical, it's a story that focuses on the human element of migration and legacy. It blends love of land & nature with land rights and disaster (both natural and manmade) to tell the story of South Louisiana. 4⭐️\\ \\ As part of a larger project (more on that soon), I finally read **_Where the Rivers Merge_** by Mary Alice Monroe. I've not read any of her work before (mostly Southern women's fiction with contemporary settings), but I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. All about family legacy and one woman's relationship with her family's land, it's the type of Southern fiction that I love to sink my teeth into. I can't wait for the sequel now! 4.5⭐️\\ \\ I'm still chipping away at **_The Intrigue_** and **_A Time of Witches_**; both are so good that I'm feeling torn each time I pick up my Kindle. Hopefully I'll find the time to finish both this week. \\ \\ I'm also still savoring **_A Founding Mother_**, the July BBFL book club book. It's SO SO SO good that I had to pull out the pen and highlighter to annotate, something I never do. I'm about halfway through and eager to put this laptop down to read more of this great Revolutionary War story. \\ \\ **ICYMI:**\\ \\ - I finally posted by full Yesteryear reading vlog over on Youtube so check that out if you're still wondering if that book is for you\\ \\ - The May & June reading wrap-up is live over on Youtube, and it's full of GREAT reads\\ \\ - Suki Waterhouse has a message for us all\\ \\ - Check out this little mixed genre bookmail haul \\ \\ - Meet the Montana tote from Portland Leather goods\\ \\ - All the books I purchased on the Great California Bookstore Tour\\ \\ - Paid subscribers get full access to exclusive vlogs like my very first episode of Library Adventures\\ \\ \\ **Hear it Here First:**\\ \\ Stay tuned for a list of my favorite reads of the year so far! Planning to share on Booktube, Bookstagram, and Booktok this week. \\ \\ The August historical fiction look ahead should be live by the end of the week on social media; there's a few indie authors on this month's list which makes me happy. \\ \\ Don't forget that **_The Shadow of the Wind_** is the August BBFL book club book. And that includes crime—here are my reads of the week, plus lots of excellent book mail.\\ \\ ****This week’s reads:**** \\ \\ - **_Wisdom Corner_ by David Heska Wanbli Weiden (finished):** Virgil Wounded Horse is trying to escape his vigilante past on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. This was an enjoyable action-packed thriller with strong cultural themes and a flawed but compassionate protagonist. It moves along pretty quickly and works well as standalone.\\ \\ - **_The Talented Mr. Ripley_ by Patricia Highsmith (finished):** A disturbing yet captivating read. Highsmith taps into not just the psyche of a sociopath, but the incessant trust of everyone in his circle—showing us just how trusting we can be, especially when nudged in the direction of what we want to believe is the truth. Timeless. This is the Read Herring Book Club’s July pick.\\ \\ - **_You’ll Be Sorry_ by Lisa Gardner (currently reading):** A creepy, decades-old unsolved crime in rural New Hampshire. I am loving the multi-POV and eerie vibes of this so far.\\ \\ - **_We Chase Shadows_ by Richard Osman (currently reading):** I couldn’t resist starting this one. I always know I’m going to laugh with Osman. Rosie remains a favorite, but I’m starting to really love Felicity as well.\\ \\ \\ ****This week’s book mail:**** \\ \\ - **_Tell Me Something True_ by Michael Robotham (out January 5):** Small-town Australian suspense for which I have read nothing but rave reviews.\\ \\ \\ - **_Vice and Virtue_ by Libby Klein (out now):** A special box to celebrate a rock-themed cozy mystery! This looks so, so cute and hilarious.\\ \\ - **_Murder in the Crooked House_ by Soji Shimada (out now):** After loving _The Tokyo Zodiac Murders_, I was stoked to receive its sequel.\\ \\ - **_Sex on Murder Island_ by Jo Firestone (out now):** Another sequel score!! I freaking loved Luella van Horn and _Murder on Sex Island_ and I hope this one makes me laugh just as hard.\\ \\ - **_The Wedding Week_ by Aisha Saeed (out now):** Long-buried secrets resurface when a woman returns home for her sister’s lavish resort wedding in the Everglades.\\ \\ - **_Liberty Street_ by Heather Marshall (out now):** One journalist’s harrowing journey into an infamous real-life 1960s women’s prison—and the detective who uncovers her story decades later.\\ \\ - **_Nine Lives_ by Catherine Steadman (out now):** When she begins to peer into the lives of her glamorous neighbors, one woman discovers a terrifying secret in this riveting psychological thriller with nine lives worth of twists. (Previously, I enjoyed the author’s _The Family Game_.)\\ \\ - **_Perfect Life_ by Meredith Lavender and Kendall Shores (out now):** Following a shocking murder, a woman must face the husband she thought she knew in this twisty, sizzling novel from the bestselling authors of _Happy Wife_.\\ \\ - **_The Intrigue_ by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (out now):** A 1940s noir novel about a handsome con man and the two women who get in his way.\\ \\ \\ Thank you to Atlantic Crime, Libby Klein, Pushkin Vertigo, and Bantam Books for these gifted books.\\ \\ Yours mysteriously,\\ \\ Manon\\ \\ Join for free or login](https://mysterymanon.binderybooks.com/item/yIYYwf05PcnXA3A4CkwQ/) [Case Files: Summer crime and lots of book mail](https://mysterymanon.binderybooks.com/item/yIYYwf05PcnXA3A4CkwQ/) Recapping the week of July 20 * * * 13 books [Bien Leidos\\ \\ tomesandtextiles\\ \\ • Jul 21](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/) [Weekly Newsletter: July 21st Latine Releases](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/item/xBuNQhlTvBVDrSthnt7k/) * * * 7 books 5 [1](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/item/xBuNQhlTvBVDrSthnt7k/#comments) [She's Becoming Bookish\\ \\ Carlie Dayle\\ \\ • Jul 19](https://shesbecomingbookish.binderybooks.com/) Join for free \\ \\ Happy Sunday book buddies!\\ \\ There was a lot of reading _and creating_ going on this week, so let's cut straight to the chase. But before the books I must say _The Odyssey_ is a MUST watch film. It was SO, SO good. \\ \\ Alright, let's get to the books. I literally just finished **_The Parisian Heist_** on audio and have to say it was a fun summer suspense, especially if you're an art history lover. The dueling timelines married perfectly, complimenting each other in terms of tone and content. It's a bit more open door than I like, but it wasn't smutty. 4⭐️s\\ \\ I finally finished **_The Secret Society of Librarians_** earlier this week and boy was it good! I didn't care for one aspect of the ending so I can't quite give it a 5⭐️ rating, but it was an absolutely terrific WWII story. Full of heart and wonderful characters, this is a must read if you've loved Thompson's previous work or love WWII stories. 4.75⭐️\\ \\ As part of an ongoing research project (more on that soon) I devoured **_The Giver of Stars_** on audio. And, spoiler alert, it was just as good as everyone said it would be. Highly recommend it if you love strong female characters and a fierce group of friends. 4.5⭐️\\ \\ If you follow me on any of my platforms then you've probably seen the video I shared yesterday claiming **_Cane River_** a must read historical fiction. It stole my heart, and it's been so hard to keep it under wraps since finishing last week. I cannot say enough good things about this multi-generational family legacy story. If I read over 500 pages in physical format in less than a week, you know it's good. An absolute banger that everyone should read. 5⭐️\\ \\ I'm about six chapters into my physical copy of **_A Founding Mother_** and really am enjoying it. It's my first Dray/Kamoie, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm really enjoying the period appropriate, yet very approachable language. I know the BBFL book club members are really enjoying this one, and I have a feeling I will, too. \\ \\ I've started my advanced reader copy of **_The Intrigue_**, and, no surprise to anyone, I'm already sucked into this tale. It's very cinematic, which is exactly what I was hoping for from SMG. I will read anything she writes.\\ \\ My plan is to try to tackle both **_The Intrigue_** and **_A Time of Witches_** on my Kindle this week, and to listen to **_The Quarter Queen_** and **_Should the Waters Take Us_** on audio. I'm missing home terribly, so spending some time in Louisiana via a few audiobooks will help. \\ \\ What are you planning to read this week? What books did you read last week? It's a wealthy all-Black Free Town--untouched by white oppression--where ambitious Thea Elliot and her husband plan to make good on their big dreams. Little do they know that the idyllic town teems with ghoulish, walking nightmares . . . that only the women can see.\\ \\ Marah knows the groanings well. She is one of the carriers--women with the ability to pull traumatic memories from men. Populated by men entirely freed of their pain, East Cobb has flourished, even as the remnants of their memories haunt the town's women. When an unexpected death drives Marah to discover more about her own power, Thea's and Marah's worlds collide. The sisters must confront the rotten core at the heart of East Cobb's prosperity and choose what--and who--will survive the reckoning.\\ \\ \\ \\ **A year in the life of a family as they strike out into the unknown (aka Vermont), leaving all the comforts of home behind—a rollicking, lyrical novel from Pulitzer Prize finalist Daniel Mason, the bestselling author of _North Woods_ and one of America’s greatest living writers.**\\ \\ Miles Krzelewski is a devoted husband, a doting father beloved for his outlandish bedtime stories, and the proud owner of a truffle-hunting dog in a land with no truffles. He is also a bit lost, twelve years late with his PhD on Russian folktales and increasingly haunted by a sense that he’s become a disappointment to his family. So when his wife, Kate, accepts a visiting professorship at a prestigious college in the faraway forests of Vermont, he decides that this will be the year to finally move forward with his life.\\ \\ But Miles is a man of many enthusiasms, one who possesses, in Kate’s words, a great capacity “to fall in with anyone, anywhere.” And no sooner does he arrive than he finds himself entangled with a cast of characters as colorful as those of any of his folktales, from a ghostly tree surgeon to a scythe-mad biochemist, from a Shakespearean temptress to a photographer of snowflakes obsessed with chronicling, on thousands of index cards, the world’s delusions in an Inventory of Wrong Ideas.\\ \\ The new friends, the enchanted woods, the histories: sure, no PhD, but all good fun. Until Miles stumbles upon a bizarre—perhaps ridiculous—local legend, which, he soon suspects, might not be just a legend after all.\\ \\ Joyous, absurd, and life-affirming, _Country People_ is a luminous exploration of marriage and parenthood, the nature of belief and the power of stories, and the ways in which we find connection in an increasingly fragmented world.\\ \\ \\ \\ **A complex mother-daughter relationship is taken to a new level in this fresh and propulsive novel of family curses, blood-thirsty ghouls, and budding romance set against the Mojave Desert and Las Vegas.**\\ \\ Ellis Karsten spends nights working triage in the ER and days having the same conversation with her mom. The early onset dementia is exhausting, but the real challenge is their curse—Ellis’s family must feed daily on blood, or risk becoming mindless, skinless killing machines. When Ellis’s uncle, who supplies their blood, vanishes, she takes it upon herself to find a new source, aided by a prickly paramedic who’s equal parts unpredictable and intoxicating. But as Ellis fights to balance her bloodthirsty nature with a new relationship, her mom’s impossible demands transform into panicked warnings that a fabled monster, “The Flayed Man,” is stalking them.\\ \\ As she traverses the desert in search of blood, Ellis risks her safety and her family’s secret, until it becomes clear that her mom is right: something ancient and hungry is hunting them, and it has come for her mom. Blood hunger begins to overtake Ellis, transforming her body into something ghoulish and frightening—exactly what The Flayed Man wants. In the end, she must decide who to trust, what she’s willing to sacrifice, and whether she is worthy of a life, and love, beyond her curse—or if she’s going to succumb to instinct and ravage the world.\\ \\ \\ \\ **From the _New York Times_ bestselling author of _Mexican Gothic_ and _Velvet Was the Night_ comes a sizzling noir about desire, danger, and greed, in which seduction is the ultimate con.**\\ \\ Handsome con artist Ulises has long charmed lonely women via letters in order to steal their money, but money is hard to come by in 1940s Mexico. Ulises knows his looks won’t last forever, and he’s desperate to get his hands on a real fortune.\\ \\ He thinks he’s found it when he captivates his newest correspondent, Perla, the owner of a small-town boardinghouse in picturesque Veracruz. But when he meets her, he finds something he didn’t expect. The woman has a niece, Inés, who is as observant as she is desperate to escape her aunt’s household.\\ \\ When Inés discovers Ulises’s true intentions, she wants in on the scheme. They’ll convince her aunt that Ulises is a great catch, Perla will marry him, and her money will vanish. Easy, fast, and clean. But Perla is not the desperate, silly spinster Ulises imagines. She harbors secrets. And although Ulises does not believe in true romance, Inés is more alluring than he bargained for. Suddenly, a simple plan may become perilously complicated.\\ \\ Venture into the streets of a small town where a patina of convention and good manners conceals a cauldron of avarice and lust.\\ \\ **Four very compelling choices! Excellent writing and characterization makes this a pleasure to read. The mystery is entertaining but predictable, in my opinion.\\ \\ - **_The Tokyo Zodiac Murders_ by Soji Shimada (finished):** I knew from the prologue that I was going to be gripped by this one, and that feeling remained straight through the epilogue. It is now tied for my favorite Read Herring Book Club selection so far (alongside February’s _Devil in a Blue Dress_). A puzzling mystery, an entertaining detective, and just the right amount of emotion made this an immensely satisfying mystery. I was literally giddy when I got to the explanation of the crime.\\ \\ - **_Breakout_ by Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon (currently reading):** I am rounding the final bend on this one and have my popcorn in hand for what I hope is a dramatic conclusion. While I am enjoying the story, the audiobook narration is hit or miss (but such is the risk of multiple narrators).\\ \\ \\ ****This week’s book mail:**** \\ \\ - **_Moriarty: The Great Chaos_ (Audible Original):** I got a crazy PR box for this third and final installment in Audible’s _Moriarty_ audio drama series, which stars Dominic Monaghan as James Moriarty and Phil LaMarr as Sherlock Holmes, and Sir Ben Kingsley as Moriarty’s father. Watch my unboxing on your platform of choice: Instagram \| TikTok \| YouTube \| Facebook\\ \\ - **_The Great Game_ by Arvind Ethan David (out July 14):** A historical mystery with a Holmesian flare in which two men, a veteran-turned-law student and a gentleman thief, investigate a series of brutal aristocratic murders in 1905 London.\\ \\ - **_The Intrigue_ by Silvia Moreno-Garcia (out July 14):** A 1940s noir novel about a handsome con man and the two women who get in his way. Say less!\\ \\ - **_The Enigma Challenge_ by S.C. Godfrey (out August 11):** Here is the blurb that sold me on this one: “This is what you’d get if a Dan Brown novel was rewritten by Emily Henry.” (Kirkus)\\ \\ \\ Thank you to Audible, Thomas & Mercer/Megan Beatie Communications, Del Rey, and Pamela Dorman Books/Viking Books for these gifts.\\ \\ Yours mysteriously,\\ \\ Manon\\ \\ Join for free or login](https://mysterymanon.binderybooks.com/item/nvO16wBrAu6fTwRYD4O2/) [Case Files: Tokyo detection, Moriarty, and more](https://mysterymanon.binderybooks.com/item/nvO16wBrAu6fTwRYD4O2/) Recapping the week of June 15 * * * 6 books 1 [Bien Leidos\\ \\ tomesandtextiles\\ \\ • Jun 16](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/) [WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: June 16th Latine Book Releases](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/item/xrJcqaOgV6nRpHMXBghY/) * * * 9 books 4 [Bien Leidos\\ \\ tomesandtextiles\\ \\ • Jun 2](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/) [WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: June 2nd Latine Book Release](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/item/dey9Dm3fiLohU8AQJX3d/) * * * 15 books 6 [Bien Leidos\\ \\ tomesandtextiles\\ \\ • Jun 2](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/) [Read Latine Books With Bien Leidos Book Club This Summer](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/item/8X5l4zdU1uZdIhd5yJHK/) * * * 6 books 1 [Bien Leidos\\ \\ tomesandtextiles\\ \\ • May 31](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/) [EXCLUSIVE NEWSLETTER: June Latine Releases](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/item/OAzApaGjfeXXunYg6Lwd/) * * * 28 books 3 [Bien Leidos\\ \\ tomesandtextiles\\ \\ • May 24](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/) [WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: May 26th Latine Book Releases](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/item/CymW2TWp4giVqSnuVIdc/) * * * 11 books 5 [Bien Leidos\\ \\ tomesandtextiles\\ \\ • May 5](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/) [WEEKLY NEWSLETTER: May 5th Latine Book Releases](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/item/yAKxnbUpHZ8133SydNBG/) * * * 7 books 9 [Bien Leidos\\ \\ tomesandtextiles\\ \\ • Mar 15](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/) [NEWSLETTER: March 17th Latine Book Releases](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/item/CXaJHoCFH6T86oP8BMBd/) * * * 8 books 3 [She's Becoming Bookish\\ \\ Carlie Dayle\\ \\ • Feb 11](https://shesbecomingbookish.binderybooks.com/) Join for free \\ \\ Join for free or login](https://shesbecomingbookish.binderybooks.com/item/gxMkyw7rXFUN9Bbqic4X/) [The 2026 Historical Fiction Preview You’ve Been Waiting For 📚 41 New Releases!](https://shesbecomingbookish.binderybooks.com/item/gxMkyw7rXFUN9Bbqic4X/) I’m sharing the 2026 historical fiction releases I am most excited about—and y’all, 2026 is looking absolutely unreal for us hist-fic fans! * * * 39 books 2 [Bien Leidos\\ \\ tomesandtextiles\\ \\ • Jan 8](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/) [My most anticipated 2026 Latine Releases](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/item/nOGG7sYLXMHVqUGJ7jVz/) Latine Book Bingo Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb1hMhuel1I&t=698s Latine Book Bingo Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crIo3beKmaE&t=107s Opening credits illustrated and animated by the extremely talented Manuela Guillén: https://www.instagram.com/lazybeamarte/ #booktube #latinxbooks * * * 15 books 10 [Bien Leidos\\ \\ tomesandtextiles\\ \\ • Nov 25 2025](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/) [Weekly reading update](https://bien-leidos.binderybooks.com/item/7KL8phGW9B8s8K2kIH8k/) Weekly reading update #novemberreading #currentlyreading #avidreader #bienleidos #tomesandtextiles * * * 5 books 3
