“An insultingly good debut” following a queer Chicano’s cannon-shot into adulthood amidst familial turmoil and the suffocating violence of Stockton, California in the early 2000s (Ruth Madievsky).

Cría cuervos y te sacaran los ojos: Raise crows and they’ll take out your eyes. Since the age of seven, Christian has been under the thumb of a curse. He reads its dark signs everywhere: in his bedridden mother’s wilting plants; in his brother’s estrangement; in his father’s eager fists and glassy stare. He reads it in his nightmares, in Stockton’s soundtrack of sirens and gunshot. Above all, he reads the curse in the mirror, watching himself “turn” into the crow his father always predicted he’d become.

Maddened by the city’s heatwaves and his own unthinkable desires, often high and drunk, Christian rips through his neighborhood, desperate to escape not only the city but the monster of his pain. But even when he leaves, the curse follows.

Can Christian ever be absolved? Or is he condemned to be consumed by the same violence as his father?

And I’ll Take Out Your Eyes is a defiant, shattering portrait of self-discovery in the face of violence, mental illness, and other dark inheritances. In a lyric, circuit-bending onslaught of ragers and laments, A. M. Sosa delivers a redemptive story—and an unforgettable debut.

[Happy Tuesday, mis internet amigxs!\ \ I hope everyone had a relaxing Decoration, i.e., Memorial Day and that those that had a 3 day weekend truly enjoyed the additional time off.\ \ Before I begin with book club reminders, I have seen the violent footage form Delaney Hall yesterday (tw: police violence), that lead to friends being attacked an a US Senator, Andy Kim, being pepper sprayed for trying to provide oversight of the facility. I feel like I have run out of words to describe the horrors I see everyday in this country, but I will continue to witness and help where I can. Currently, I am trying to find mutual aid to donate to for protestors. I've reached out to friends who were there this weekend and am waiting to hear back from them. If you know of any, please feel free to comment them below so that I can share and amplify.\ \ AUTHOR CHAT \ \ Our author chat with Natalia Hernandez is coming up on Monday, June 1st at 8 PM EST. The private Zoom link to attend is here. The conversation will be recorded for those who miss it. If you are joining, PLEASE REMEMBER TO TURN OFF YOUR CAMERA AND MICROPHONE.\ \ There is still time to read the book! I read it in 2 sittings this weekend. It is a quick and fun cozy romp that I highly recommend. It's on Kindle Unlimited for those with subscriptions.\ \ JUNE BOOK CLUB \ \ I can't believe June is right around the corner. Our fiction read is And I'll Take Out Your Eyes by A. M. Sosa, a debut following a queer Chicano’s cannon-shot into adulthood amidst familial turmoil and the suffocating violence of Stockton, California in the early 2000s.\ \ We're also still reading our May nonfiction pick through the end of June, Accordion Eulogies, a memoir of music, migration and Mexcio that is also a micro-history of the accordion.\ \ July book club polls for both fiction and nonfiction will be up this week!\ \ As we look out for the rest of the year of book club:\ \

Happy Tuesday, mis internet amigxs!\ \ Greetings from Washington, DC where I attended the Save Our Stores Supper to kick off their Launch of the Banned Wagon this week in DC and Philadelphia. I’ll be posting a full recap soon, but for now, here’s a snap of me in front of the Banned Wagon’\ \ \ \ Banned Books Week is this week. I am dedicating my Latinx Heritage Month Personal Curriculum series on Tik Tok to books banned in Hillsborough County where I live.\ \ Here's a little more about the week and the theme.\ \ Banned Books Week 2025: Censorship Is So 1984\ \ \ \ The theme for this year's Banned Books Week is that Censorship is so 1984, highlighting the Orwellian nature of book censorship. As Kelly Jensen says in her newsletter this week, not really sure what "read for your rights" means. I highly recommend you subscribe to her newsletter for more resources on book banning. Censorship affects the work and lives of authors, illustrators, publishers, and, most importantly, readers. Constraining access to books infringes on our First Amendment rights.\ \ I have a few events I'll be at next week in Tampa:\ \ The Librarians documentary screening at Sun-Ray Cinema tomorrow, Wednesday, October 8th at 7:30 PM. You can get your tickets here. If you can't make it, then would you mind sharing my social media posts? We're almost a 1/2 of the way full in less than 24 hours, but I'd love to sell out the showing (Instagram | Tik Tok | Facebook) The Librarians is THE history of modern book banning everyone needs to see. They're doing a number of Banned Books Week viewings all over the world, so be sure to check out their website to look for a screening near you.\ \ On October 11th, I'll be joining Bookends Ybor , my friend Rachel and several others will be at Gasparilla Distillery from 3-9 PM for their closing of Banned Books Week event. You can get your ticket and find all event details here.\ \ And while it doesn't fall during banned books week, I'll be joining the Hillsborough County LGBTQ+ Caucus in a discussion on book banning on October 15th at 6:00PM. They don't have the registration link live yet, but you can check their calendar of events closer to the date to register.\ \ And OMG! I will be in conversation with THEE Mary Roach on Saturday, November 1st at the New Tampa Performing Arts Center at 1:30 PM!!! Tickets for the event have sold out, unfortunately, but I will have a full report after the event!\ \ ICYMI: The Bindery App is HERE for iOS (with Android coming soon!). Let me know what you think of it when you download it! ALSO, if you do download and use it, DON'T FORGET TO RATE IT IN THE APP STORE! As of the time of writing this, Bindery is the #50 app in the app store, but I'm pretty sure our powerful community can get it to #1!\ \ And now let’s get to this week’s book releases!\ \ LITERARY FICTION \ \ \ \ And I'll Take Your Eyes Out by A. M. Sosa (Audiobook) “An insultingly good debut” following a queer Chicano’s cannon-shot into adulthood amidst familial turmoil and the suffocating violence of Stockton, California in the early 2000s\ \ FANTASY \ \ \ \ The River And The Star by Gabriela Romero Lacruz (Audiobook)\ \ \ \ Tales of Dark Feminine by V. Castro (Audiobook)\ \ HOLIDAY ROMANCE \ \ \ \ The Holiday Hookup List by Alexis Daria\ \ FEMINIST ANTHOLOGY IN TRANSLATION \ \ La Lucha: Latin American Feminism Today Edited by Carolina Orloff\ \ TRANSLATED FICTION \ \ \ \ Mothers by Brenda Lozano (Audiobook)\ \ MIDDLE GRADE GRAPHIC NOVEL - SPANISH \ \ \ \ Srta. ALSO, if you do download and use it, DON'T FORGET TO RATE IT IN THE APP STORE! As of the time of writing this, Bindery is the #50 app in the app store, but I'm pretty sure our powerful community can get it to #1!\ \ Now that all the announcements are out of the way, we can get to next week's releases. I'm going to be honest with you, I'm not sure which book to pick as the book of the week, so I've created our first poll: tell me which book should be my book of the week. I'll be recording my New Book Tuesday post on Sunday!\ \ LITERARY FICTION \ \ \ \ And I'll Take Your Eyes Out by A. M.
