Longlisted for the 2022 Scotiabank Giller Prize. A debut novel from a rising literary star that brings the modern queer and Indigenous experience into sharp relief.

In the stark expanse of Northern Alberta, a queer Indigenous doctoral student steps away from his dissertation to write a novel, informed by a series of poignant encounters: a heart-to-heart with fellow doctoral student River over the mounting pressure placed on marginalized scholars; a meeting with Michael, a closeted man from his hometown whose vulnerability and loneliness punctuate the realities of queer life on the fringe.

Woven throughout these conversations are memories of Jack, a cousin caught in the cycle of police violence, drugs, and survival. Jack’s life parallels the narrator’s own; the possibilities of escape and imprisonment are left to chance with colonialism stacking the odds.

A Minor Chorus introduces a dazzling new literary voice whose vision and fearlessness shine much-needed light on the realities of Indigenous survival.

[Here are some Indigenous audiobooks that are currently on sale on Libro! (I think it varies by region)\ \ Audiobooks took me a looong time to get into. As someone with autism and ADHD, processing information (especially verbal) has always been a challenge. But I really wanted to find a way in, especially during burnout, when reading with my own eyeballs is too dang hard.\ \ If audiobooks are hard for you too, but you want them to work, I really recommend pairing them with something that keeps your body busy and your mind open to processing sound information. I know a lot of people craft, but for me that takes too much focus because I need to think about my art. What’s helped me is sort of mundane tasks like doing the dishes, tidying up, small chores that you can do on auto pilot. Audiobooks make those moments feel more doable and enjoyable. There has been a substantial increase in my available spoons since getting into audiobooks!!\ \ I used to avoid listening on walks because I really value being present- taking in the world around me and being in relationship with the land. But lately I’ve been going on night walks with an audiobook, and it’s been sooo nice. A different kind of presence. In the darkness of night the sounds are dull, the brightness is gone, the humans are asleep and everything is . It’s just you and a story and the light of the moon. (sometimes some little furry pals lurking about !!) I find myself walking three times farther than usual. It’s turned into a gentle way to move my body, especially on days when that feels hard. It’s my new favourite coping skill (and I’ve been needing to do a lot of coping!!!!)\ \ If you haven’t joined libro, I highly recommend it. It is superior to every other audiobook service. You get to support in the bookstores and the sales selection is always vast and you get to keep the audiobooks, even if you unsubscribe and you can bookmark different parts of them, etc!!!\ \ Feel free to join using my link so I can read more💕 https://libro.fm/referral?rf\_code=lfm992710\\ \

Audiobook love & sale selection!

\ \ The Goodby People by Gavin Lambert is a delicious and romp-y case study on 60’s Los Angeles. Blurbed as being “the best novel about post-Manson, pre-Disney LA”, I found it to be elegant and striking and surprisingly modern in tone. Really fun character studies, with just the right touch of introspection from our cool narrator. McNally Editions is publishing really interesting stuff, definitely a project to keep your eye on. For fans of: Joan Didion, Eve Babitz, and strip malls.\ \ \ \ The Seas by Samantha Hunt is set within a sleepy and seemingly permanently dreary coastal town, and follows a young unnamed narrator. She’s navigating lust, loss, addiction, and her unwavering belief that she is in fact, a mermaid. I thought this was such a beautiful and fraught exploration about coming of age that dabbled with magical realism elements in a way that felt wholly considered. For fans of: Claire Vaye Watkins, Daisy Johnson, and water signs.\ \ \ \ I still have 75 pages or so to finish of A Minor Chorus by Billy-Ray Belcourt as I’ve been savoring it, but this book is sneaking up into top ten of the year territory. There always has to be a late December contender! This piece of autofiction follows a grad student who has set out to write a novel about his Indigenous community in northern Canada. It wrestles with absurdity of higher education, queerness, and what the act of writing even means. It’s sort of breaking my heart. For fans of: Ocean Vuong, Brandon Taylor, and magic.](https://sunnysbooktruck.binderybooks.com/item/Yd5GiKHRtis3R6Vs8kQK/)
