A poetic memoir as intricately woven as a dreamcatcher about overcoming the pain of generational trauma with the power of traditional healing.

In her deeply affecting memoir, Soft as Bones, Chyana Marie Sage shares the pain of growing up with her father: a crack dealer who went to prison for molesting her older sister. She details the shame and guilt she carried for years after her family’s trauma as she went from one dysfunctional relationship to another, from one illegal drug to another.

In revisiting her family’s history and weaving in the perspectives of her mother and sisters, Chyana examines the legacy of generational abuse, which began with her father’s father, who was forcibly removed from his family by the residential schools and Sixties Scoops programs. Yet hers is also a story of hope, as it was the traditions of her people that saved her life.

In candid, incisive, and delicate prose, Chyana braids personal narrative with Cree stories and ceremonies, all as a means of healing one small piece of the mosaic that makes up the dark past of colonialism shared by Indigenous people throughout Turtle Island.

2026 is the year of the brain and that means that we are reading more non-fiction!\ \ You know that I love a challenge, so I created this one on Storygraph!\ \ The challenge is to read a total of 6 non fiction books written by Indigenous authors. If you've already read a book, you need to reread it in 2026 for it to count. \ \ I've added just a few Indigenous non-fiction to this post for you to check out and many more on the challenge page itself. \ \ If you plan on buying any, please shop from the attached books below. I earn a small commission for each book you purchase (whether I listed it or not!)

Ann Coulter strikes again. "We Didn't Kill Enough Indians"\ \ I'm never surprised by what comes out of that troll's mouth and I'm also never surprised by her racist followers chiming in with support. \ \ This genocidal rhetoric, though not new, is dangerous and it is important for us to denounce hate speech. \ \ It is also important to remember that Indigenous people are STILL HERE and we are still telling our stories.\ \ Support Indigenous artists, authors, creatives. \ \ I've included 10 upcoming books (or very recently released) written by Indigenous authors in this post. Check them out! Don't just add them to your TBR and never get to them, consider ordering them today!\ \ As I've mentioned previously, Pre-Orders are so important, especially for marginalized folks. High pre-order numbers can make the difference in whether or not a store like Barnes and Noble is going to stock the book (and more than one copy!)
