The darkness isn’t empty. It’s hungry.

I've been covering for a colleague in my day job, and likely will be for sometime and I also am going through a major life event which I'm not quite ready to discuss publicly yet, but I'm doing what I can when I can, so I hope you'll remain patient with me. Can you believe that What Feeds Below releases in October? I think because of the level of excitement around the book, it feels like release date is next week! I haven't had a lot of time to reflect on Bookcon because my day job has been so intense, but the response to What Feeds Below was incredible to see. We brought 50 arcs to give away. An hour before drop time there was over 100 people in line. I stayed around and handed out probably 100 bookmarks and 150-200 art cards. It was so incredible to see so many people excited for what I know is going to make a lot of people's top 10 lists!\ \ We already have 300 ratings on Goodreads! I feel like that number is high for a book not coming out for several months (and no giveaways have been hosted YET (stay tuned). And the reviews have been overwhelmingly position (4.65 average!) \ \ Last week Tatiana shared on Instagram her story about a Big 5 publisher rejecting What Feeds Below ON HER BIRTHDAY because they didn't know what to do with it. \ \ Their loss (and the other publishers who rejected WFB) is definitely our gain! \ \ And if there is one thing that I believe is that indie publishing, especially Bindery books, can rival the BIG 5 in reach and success and I would love to do everything in our power to help Tatiana hit a best seller list. \ \ The immediate goal for us is to hit 1,000 preorders. (Thank GOD I leave the discord channels up for months, because I am the problem now, lol) I should have May's channels up this weekend. \ \ I am also covering for coworker who's going to be out for 3 months, on deadline for an essay due in June, the Stanford Pow Wow is approaching, Florence and The Machine is in 2 weeks! and I'm hitting the road on Memorial Day weekend. You could say IM BOOKED AND BUSY!\ \ While I may be participating less in bookclubs this month, my goal is to run Reading Sprints at least twice a week in the Discord! (TONIGHT 4pm PST/7pm EST) \ \ When I was in NYC, I wanted to treat myself for all of my recent accomplishments. AND I DID. And the day after.... MY MACBOOK AIR crashed. Lmao. LIFE. I'm going to be listing a TON of special editions (probably everything except the horror) to Pango and a lot of other books to Pango to help me pay for a new laptop. I can't write this essay without a laptop. I had the worst reading month in February that I've had in a long time. Anyone else? \ \ I only managed to read 5 books!\ \ What Feeds Below by Tatiana Schlote-Bonne (reread, ebook, arc) I knew that the arc was going to go up on NETGALLEY, GO REQUEST NOW! so I wanted to reread so I could experience the all the fun and horror with all of you. (Yes, I will very likely reread in October before release!)\ \ The book was so much fun to read a second time, picking up on all of the little details I missed. What a crazy, bonkers, imaginitive world. I just love this book so much and I can't wait to read it again. And I can't wait for it to be turned into a horror movie franchise. Who said I can't predict the future?\ \ Speaking of buzz, I finished Buzzard (ebook, arc) by Inez Ray, this is the third book coming out from Michael Laborn's imprint Left Unread. This is a dystopian tale following the last midwife, who is in prison for giving abortions. This is an uncomfortable read that pays off in all the ways you want it to. Incredible storytelling. Current. Gut wrenching. This absolutely should be made into a television series. Add it to your TBRs, right NOW!\ \ Lost Girls of Hollow Lake (audiobook) by Rebekah Faubion this is a solid Yellowjackets comp. Fans of the show will enjoy this. I had a good time with this one. I really wanted more of the island. The relationship with the dog really saved this one for me. \ \ The Trees (audiobook) by Percival Everett was an unexpected read. I saw this on a bunch of horror book recommendations list and while there may or may not be something supernatural going on, I'd say this book leans more literary. Despite the miscategorization, this was a phenomenal read. It follows two detectives in Mississippi investigating some brutal murders in a very racist town. Historical, beautiful, brutal. A must read. If it's on your TBR, move it up immediately. \ \ When Devils Sing(audiobook)by Xan Kaur, YA southern gothic, diverse. A rich town that preys on poor people like their survival depends on it. A deal made with demons. Multi-pov that really works. Moody, atmospheric, thoroughly enjoyable. \ \ Overall, while I didn't read much, I did enjoy what I was able to read. One of my immediate goals was to get 1,000 adds on Goodreads and because of you, in just over two weeks we are at 927! That is so incredible! You may have heard me say it before, but supporting indie and marginalized authors on Goodreads is so important! Adding books to your Want to Read shelf helps these books get noticed, gets them on media lists, gets book box attention and signals to publishers that the book is going to do well. This can help author's land future contracts. I know many of my supporters have migrated to author platforms, but if you want to support marginalized author's, I strongly urge you to consider using both. • The Last Witch by CJ Cookie, holy crap! My first book by CJ Cooke and I'm hooked. I need to read all of their books right now! 15th century Innsbruck, women accused of witchcraft, historical horror at its finest!\ \ \ Current reads:\ \
• This is Not A Test by Courtney Summers, a Bindery spring release! and Women in Horror Book Club February pick (and yes Courtney will be joining us for a bookclub meeting!) I'm reading the audio as a Libro ALC and this is a zombie book full of feelings! You're going to have them! Wow!\ \

[I hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend.\ \ I've been in spending time in the coastal redwoods, relaxing and planning for next year. \ \ I wanted to drop a quick note to let you all know that one of the things I am thankful for this year is all of you! because without you none of this would be possible!\ \ Together, we have seen how traditional publishing has let writers from marginalized groups down, and this year we have seen, in many ways, how publishing in community could be the perfect response.\ \ This year, books from Bindery imprints have made best sellers lists, made (multiple) book boxes (including Aardvark!), made the Good Reads choice awards! And we are just beginning! It's a win-win for authors who decide to work with Bindery- all of the perks of traditional publishing and not having to worry about influencer support. \ \ I will admit that this entire experience hasn't all been easy. I thought I was going to open up to Indigenous authors and have so many submissions, I wouldn't know how to narrow it down! But it's been a challenge! And I've been doing a lot of work, that will continue into next year, to help make sure Indigenous writers know about this incredible opportunity. \ \ The decision to open up the imprint to women writing horror was a natural one. Women have always been the heart of horror. It's time to center them.\ \ I believe that reading is resistance. And I believe that our publishing in community is resistance. I believe that traditional publishing sleeps on the best stories, the most needed stories. I believe that together we are opening up spaces for more perspectives, more stories- better stories, stories with depth, history, humor, rage and (GASP) originality. \ \ I am so excited for the future of this imprint. [Hello Friends,\ \ Happy Sunday! Today I went for a walk (2 days in a row!) after a month of inactivity due to illness, laziness and winterness. I called Michael and said GUESS WHY IM GOING FOR A WALK! And he said, TO UNBIG YOUR BACK? And I said YES, BUT FOR A VERY SPECIFIC REASON..... you see, during the winter months I clean, I organize and I want to move around my bookshelves, which got me thinking, I'd like to buy a nice reading chair! And I found many Ikea chairs I liked, but before investing, I had to check out the specs (As a BIG BACK!) and most of them said they can hold up to 242 lbs. That seems like a very precise number. Like they did the math and 242.5 lbs was gonna break that summabitch, so I'd like to get down to 230 lbs and as a reward buy a cute reading chair. UNBIG MY BACK is now in progress.\ \ \ \ Which brings me to my next topic: 75 BOOKED. I created a channel in our community Discord if anyone wants to participate! This is a trend, a version of 75 Hard for bookies, started by @emilypaigebooks and the rules are as follows:\ \

• Complete two 45 minute reading sessions daily (one of them NOT being in bed)\ \
• Finish a water bottle during each session. (STAY HYDRATED)\ \
• Log all reading in a physical journal\ \
• NO PURCHASING BOOKS- all books must be owned, bought second hand or checked out from the library.\ \ \ I am started 75 booked this coming Weds! I can guarantee you that this book is going to be on Best Cover Lists (and Best Horror Lists) of 2026!

I have 13-14 really great premises that I'm interested in right now, and I'm discussing them here and over on the Paid Subscriber chat in Discord. \ \ As a reminder! Paid subscribers get all of our publishing news first. Here are some things I've shared recently:\ \

1. What Feeds Below: first draft cover, back copy of the book, second draft cover walkthrough\ \
2. Pitchfest pitches that I'm interested in and how I go about prioritizing what I read. It's also a great way for me to get feedback on the books YOU would love to see come from this imprint. \ \ \ The book I choose now will be publishing in Spring 2027. As of right now, I am only approved to publish one book per year. There are two things that could happen to increase my chances of getting a Fall 2027 book: \ \
3. Increase my paid subscribers by 100 people.\ \ \ Paid subscriptions are split 3 ways:\ \ a. goes into the production of the books we publish under this imprint\ \ b. goes back into the community. Whenever I host a giveaway where I am doing the shipping, It is $5 for media mail. \ \ c. goes to buy me an iced latte (literally lol)\ \ $5 members get e copies of the book\ \ $12 + $25 members get their names in the book on the thank you page! (and get physical copies of the book). \ \ One of our community members shamed me this morning while showing what the Bindery books signature page looks like, while showing off a final copy of Cry Voidbringer. Michael's thank you pages are like 3 pages long! We still have time to get there and for me to not be crying in the closet. (PS, Michael deserves it and go pre order Cry Voidbringer RIGHT NOW. The book comes out next week) \ \
4. I believe pre-orders for What Feeds Below will start in January (don't quote me). If I can get 1,000 preorders month one, I think I would have a solid argument for getting a second book. Mind you, no one has done this as of yet. That would mean every single person in this community commits to pre-ordering the book when it first goes on sale. \ \ \ Why does this matter?\ \ Our mission has always been to amplify voices fighting to be heard. I opened up my imprint to include Women in Horror because I was not getting many Indigenous submissions. I have continued to work behind the scenes building community and getting the news of my imprint out to authors and will continue to do so.\ \ In order to meet that goal, my imprint has to exist and be profitable. Since the beginning of my platform, I have always been a vocal supporter of women writing horror. And recently learning that out of 191 authors nominated for a Bram Stoker award, only 26 women have been nominated, I've been incredibly motivated to help open doors where I can. \ \ I would love to be able to publish 1 Indigenous book and 1 horror book per year. (and as we grow, eventually 4-6 books per year with a 50/50 split whenever possible). \ \ I have received TOO MANY good manuscripts to only publish one book. At Shelves and the City, I asked influencers to give me an Indigenous book they would recommend! [Hello Friends, \ \ I hope you are all having a fabulous weekend full of books! As you know, Bindery recently closed out another Pitchfest and I wanted to provide everyone an update. \ \ We have been searching for our first acquisition for the last 6 months! Each Pitchfest we hold brings in numerous submissions, with a VERY small percentage of Indigenous folks. We have also had few agent submissions. We did make two offers to previously traditionally published authors, but they chose to go in a different direction. We are still searching for the right book. \ \ What you may not know is that I have been doing a lot of work on the backend, meeting with community members, contacting writing programs, doing whatever it takes to get the word out about our imprint and this publishing opportunity. This work will continue and is just part of the process for this imprint. \ \ If you've been following me for a long time, you know that I read EVERYTHING, from poetry and non-fiction, to fantasy, to literary fiction to horror and romance. Over the last couple of years, I have been known for two things: highlighting Indigenous books and emphasizing the importance of Women in Horror (and maybe challenging the men in horror, a little.) I run two book clubs (Good Day to Read Indigenous (STEPHEN GRAHAM JONES IS JOINING OUR MEETING THIS MONTH AND IM STILL SHOOKETH) and Women in Horror) on Discord, you can join those here.\ \ After much deliberation and another unsuccessful Pitchfest, I have made the decision to expand Boozhoo Books to include horror books written by women. I want to be clear that my desire and goal is unwavering. I want to publish Indigenous books! And I hope that the promotional work I continue to do will bring in more submissions. I also fully intend to grow this platform and work on garnering more paid subscribers to be able to sustain both Indigenous books and Women in Horror long-term. (Hopefully including INDIGENOUS WOMEN IN HORROR). My long term goal is to be able to release 4 titles per year. I hope you are able to see and understand this vision. How hard is it to find an Indigenous Book? Pretty hard, it turns out.\ \ Hello, friends! It has been some time since I have given a publishing update and I wanted to fill you in on all of the HAPPENINGS!\ \ Submissions are rolling in. Some of these are agented and some are direct.\ \ The bulk of the unagented submissions have been from NON INDIGENOUS authors, which as you can imagine, has been frustrating.\ \ I have read a few submissions from Indigenous authors and while I enjoyed them, didn’t feel like they were quite ready or a fit.\ \ If you are in my Discord, (be sure to join the Discord from the Bindery page, so you have access to the publishing channel for paid members only) you may have remembered that I updated that I received a submission from an author who has already published.  This is an eco-horror book about a community versus a logging company that involves a very angry forest. I read the book in one weekend. We scheduled a call with the author and agent and this past Friday had a conversation about the book. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that ECO HORROR IS MY JAM and I think that with a few dev. edits this book would be incredible and you all would love it.\ \ We are going to reach out to the agent to see if the author is enthused about non-traditional, but Indigenous woman led publishing, or if they are going to continue to shop the story. WILL KEEP YOU POSTED.\ \ We are also expecting another submission from an already published author. This author typically writes fiction but has a non-fiction book written: essays focused on grief. I love essay collections and we need more Indigenous non-fiction, so this book could be a great fit as well.\ \ I will keep you posted on these as more information becomes available.\ \ While agents seem enthused about our imprint, I still have a strong desire to make sure this opportunity reaches as many Indigenous authors as possible, particularly those who haven’t yet been able to acquire an agent.  To make sure our imprint is on people’s radars, we’ve started to meet with community members, who have been very gracious to give us their time and guidance.\ \ We are quickly approaching the cutoff for a Spring 2026 release and while I’m still hopeful, I know that the right book will present itself at the right time. I am laying the groundwork now for Boozhoo Books to be sustainable and successful imprint in the future. Now more than ever, it is critical to center Indigenous perspectives. Happy Valentine's Day, friends!\ \ Valentine's Day has always been a day to celebrate love and life. This Valentine's Day feels heavy.\ \ It has already been an incredibly difficult year and we are only just beginning. In order to survive the next four years, we cannot live in a state of perpetual fear and dread. We have to make joy for ourselves and loved ones. \ \ Today, I am going to give you two simple ways to fight back against the Trump administration. \ \ I want us to center love. Today, I want you to consider Indigenous love and how often you see Indigenous love represented in media. As you know, the first traditionally published Indigenous rom-com came out last year. Currently, it is the only Indigenous romance on shelves at bookstores. Imagine walking into a bookstore to buy a book in the genre you prefer, written by an author who shares your background and life experiences, and you had only one option. \ \ What if I want an enemies to lovers? A friends to lovers? A rom-com or historical romance? Too bad. You get what you get. We need to change this. And it's going to take work to get there. \ \ Every person deserves to see themselves represented on bookshelves. \ \ Here's what you can do today:\ \ Step One: Support Indigenous authors in publishing TODAY. Danica Nava, the author of The Truth According to Ember, the first traditionally published rom-com, has another book coming out this year! Love is a War Song is a love story about a pop star and a cowboy who couldn't be more different. I want you to pre-order this book today. You can do so by clicking the link below. If you cannot afford to pre-order today, request the book from your library. \ \ Step Two: Upgrade your membership today. Help support the work that I do. Hello Friends and happy first day of Native American Heritage month! I could not think of a better day to share the great news that Boozhoo Books is now a publishing imprint! We are currently searching for our first book to publish!\ \ I will have more to say in the coming days, but I decided to celebrate this success the only way I know how: ON THE NORTH COAST.\ \ We are currently looking for the following types of books by Native authors: horror, romance, mystery/thriller, fantasy/sci fi. Open to Adult and YA.\ \ Agents can submit now here .\ \ Unagented authors will be invited to submit during Pitchfest (expected to happen some time in December. Stay Tuned!)\ \ Bindery members might notice that there are new paid tiers (and also new perks per tier) As a reminder, in the Bindery model, all paid subscribers will get early updates and are invited to participate in the publishing process.\ \ Buddy Reads members will also get early E arcs of the books.\ \ Enemies to Lovers and **TBR Smashers **will get physical copies AND a Thank You IN THE BOOK.\ \ When you upgrade, be sure to go back and connect your Discord through the Bindery page so that you have access to the PAID MEMBER channels.
