Hi All, \ \ This month, any purchase from my Bindery (through Bookshop . org ) supports Quiet Quail Books, an Indigenous bookstore in Southern California.\ \ Quiet Quail Books \ \ Quiet Quail Books is a California Indigenous-owned bookseller located in San Bernardino, CA. Quiet Quail Books curates book lists and book sales of various Indigenous authored books and diverse books across all genres. Our goal is to get as many quality Indigenous authored books into people's hands and communities. We are a digital online store, do pop-up bookstores in person on a monthly basis, and have a bookstore hybrid office in San Bernardino, CA. Every book you purchase from our list helps us towards funding our supplies for our pop-up schedule. [I hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend.\ \ I've been in spending time in the coastal redwoods, relaxing and planning for next year. \ \ I wanted to drop a quick note to let you all know that one of the things I am thankful for this year is all of you! because without you none of this would be possible!\ \ Together, we have seen how traditional publishing has let writers from marginalized groups down, and this year we have seen, in many ways, how publishing in community could be the perfect response.\ \ This year, books from Bindery imprints have made best sellers lists, made (multiple) book boxes (including Aardvark!), made the Good Reads choice awards! And we are just beginning! It's a win-win for authors who decide to work with Bindery- all of the perks of traditional publishing and not having to worry about influencer support. \ \ I will admit that this entire experience hasn't all been easy. I thought I was going to open up to Indigenous authors and have so many submissions, I wouldn't know how to narrow it down! But it's been a challenge! And I've been doing a lot of work, that will continue into next year, to help make sure Indigenous writers know about this incredible opportunity. \ \ The decision to open up the imprint to women writing horror was a natural one. Women have always been the heart of horror. It's time to center them.\ \ I believe that reading is resistance. And I believe that our publishing in community is resistance. I believe that traditional publishing sleeps on the best stories, the most needed stories. I believe that together we are opening up spaces for more perspectives, more stories- better stories, stories with depth, history, humor, rage and (GASP) originality. \ \ I am so excited for the future of this imprint. Here is what is upcoming: \ \ The cover for our first book What Feeds Below, by Tatiana Schlote Bonne, please add on Goodreads here, is almost done, which means I can almost share it with all of you. Paid subscribers get a first look (they've already seen many of the sketches) and $12 subscribers are going to get their names on the Thank You page of the book!). I believe we will be up on Netgalley by January at the latest (hopefully sooner!)\ \ And there's more news. But I can't share it yet. It is very hard being the biggest gossip on the planet and having the most secrets that can't be shared. :)\ \ What's Happening In The Community\ \

None Of This Would Be Possible Without You

Today is a great day for reflection. \ \ How many books by Indigenous authors have you read this year? \ \ How many books by Indigenous authors have you bought this year? \ \ I'm going to include some books that I recommend adding to your shelves today! Buy one (or a few) that sound the most interesting to you. \ \ Instead of shopping for the best Black Friday sale, commit to supporting the work we do at this imprint for a year for $5 a month(That's the cost of two hardcover books per year). \ \ Forget hollow land acknowledgments and show support for the people. We are still here.\ \ Have a great holiday. How you show up matters.

[Hello Friends!\ \ Happy First Day of Native American Heritage Month!\ \ I want to thank you all so much for being part of this community and supporting the work that we do to support Indigenous authors!\ \ I wanted to share some updates from the publishing world with you all! The purpose of our community is to uplift, promote and publish Indigenous authors. We have and continue to be very successful in doing those first two things.\ \ I have been open to submissions from North American Indigenous authors for a little over a year and I thought I would have many more submissions than I have received.\ \ That's not to say that I've had ZERO submissions. I have had some submissions that were just not the right fit. As you know, I have to move forward with a project that 1. I feel passionate about 2. I believe I can sell. \ \ We have made a total of 3 offers over the last year and all have declined for higher advances (the sole area that Bindery cannot compete). On the backend, we have met with authors, publishing professionals, community members to help reach Indigenous authors and spread the word about Boozhoo Books, and this incredible opportunity (which we will continue to do). \ \ I s this still an Indigenous imprint? Yes. I am Indigenous. Supporting this imprint supports the work that I do to uplift and promote Indigenous authors and one day, hopefully, publish Indigenous authors. \ \ Last year, I opened my submissions to women writing horror. In order for this imprint to grow and flourish, we need to publish books. It felt natural for me to include women writing horror, another group of voices that deserve space, deserve to be heard. I have read some books that I truly can't get out of my mind and can't wait to share with you. \ \ Our first book, What Feeds Below, by Tatiana Schlote Bonne, comes out October 6, 2026! Our second book, TBA, will come out Spring 2027. We are not sure if Boozhoo will have a book Fall 2027, but there are some things that can be done to improve those chances. Here's how you can help (I cannot do this, without your help and support)\ \

  1. Upgrade your membership. I need to increase paid membership by about 100 (which is less than 10% of this community). If you won't miss $5 or $12 a month, this is for you. The reason paid subscribers are so important is because a percentage of the subscription fee goes into the production of the book. The rest is put back into the community in some way (shipping fees for giveaways, etc) or affords me an iced coffee. \ \ \ Upgrading to $5 a month for one year is the cost of two hardcover books. (I know.) $5 subscribers get e-arcs of all of the books Boozhoo publishes. \ \ Upgrading to $12 or $25 a month gets your name in the book and PHYSICAL ARCS of all the books Boozhoo publishes.\ \ All paid members get access to a private Discord channel, get early publishing updates (like seeing all the drafts of the cover, the back copy, etc), and get to participate in community decisions\ \ 2. Pre-order the book, What Feeds Below, in the first month it goes on sale (preferably from a trackable place like bookshop.org) The pre-orders have to come in early (the first month or two) from a place that is trackable in order for me to be guaranteed a book for Fall 2027. \ \ Our community goal for 2026 is continue to grow, continue to uplift and support Indigenous and other marginalized authors and to continue to spread the word about the opportunity to publish with Boozhoo Books. \ \ Other ways to support this month:\ \
  2. buy books from Indigenous authors (and use my link below) I get a commission for every book you buy after clicking my link to Bookshop (even if I didn't list it)\ \
  3. buy some books from my Pango shop. I have about 100 books to sell and once they sell I want to list 100 more. I have got to get rid of these books and clear up space. Kind of a weird request but please order 1 book or 3 and more. I have single packages and bigger sized boxes (that I don't want to use for 2 books) I will include a book bingo card in each order until I run out of them.\ \
  4. repost my social media posts! Tag me in your book reviews so I can boost them! \ \ \ \ I am so grateful with how so many of you have showed up to support in the past year and I can't wait to see how this community and imprint grows. Getting approved for a second book is just the short term goal. \ \ \ \ Check out the books below and have a great weekend!](https://boozhoo.binderybooks.com/item/dQeDUS5Dz9L7ocRndOeI/)

Happy Birthday to me! Here is how to celebrate! \ \ I will be notifying the winner of The Possession of Alba Diaz this morning so check your spam folders (hopefully this email doesn't go there as well, LOL) \ \ Reminder, you still have until September 1 to enter to win a special edition box set of The Broken Earth Trilogy enter here\ \ Shop My Pango I've still got over 100 books listed. My next shipping date is next Wednesday!\ \ Buy yourself some books from my Bookshop! I've added some of my recommendations to this post, but even if you buy books I didn't mention, I will get a small percentage! \ \ Lastly, did you know the cost of an annual paid subscription of $5 a month is roughly equal to the price of two hardcover books (wow. this economy!) More paid subscribers mean we get to publish more books! \ \ I'm going out of town for Labor Day Weekend and I hope to read 3 Books! What book should be #1 on my list? Drop your recs below!

Ann Coulter strikes again. "We Didn't Kill Enough Indians"\ \ I'm never surprised by what comes out of that troll's mouth and I'm also never surprised by her racist followers chiming in with support. \ \ This genocidal rhetoric, though not new, is dangerous and it is important for us to denounce hate speech. \ \ It is also important to remember that Indigenous people are STILL HERE and we are still telling our stories.\ \ Support Indigenous artists, authors, creatives. \ \ I've included 10 upcoming books (or very recently released) written by Indigenous authors in this post. Check them out! Don't just add them to your TBR and never get to them, consider ordering them today!\ \ As I've mentioned previously, Pre-Orders are so important, especially for marginalized folks. High pre-order numbers can make the difference in whether or not a store like Barnes and Noble is going to stock the book (and more than one copy!)

May has been quite the interesting month in publishing, has it not? \ \ First, Conduit Books, a new imprint focused solely on Men's Tales! was announced. Because there is a lack of representation in publishing and this is it, clearly. \ \ Then, a young Australian Rugby player (think Steve Irwin meets Benson Boone), who was a former Australian Bachelor reality star debuted on Booktok to talk about fantasy books. Something unique happens on Booktok whenever a man that doesn't look like a shoe joins. A certain demographic of lonely housewife goes feral. You would think these women had never seen a man in their lives. The comments that they leave demonstrate a complete lack of respect, for anyone, but they show up and they show out IN DROVES. He amassed 100,000 followers in under three days. \ \ (I have been on booktok for a couple of years. Fighting the algorithm on a daily basis). \ \ Thunder Down Under partnered with Fable to run a book club and just yesterday that he signed a 2 book deal with Atria. That's right. He signed a 2 book deal. A fantasy series. He hasn't started writing it. \ \ It is hard not to lose all motivation when BIPOC authors and BIPOC creators do not get a fraction of this kind of attention. \ \ Many of us here at Bindery are working because we genuinely believe that we can change publishing and make an impact. (We are not aiming to change the Big 5. We are aiming to challenge them). \ \ I want to reconfirm my dedication and let you know the goals of this imprint and things that you can do today that can make a difference. \ \ Boozhoo Books is currently open to submissions from women writing horror and Indigenous authors writing YA and Adult fiction. \ \ The current Bindery model supports imprints publishing 1-2 books per year. Because I have a lot of passion and I believe in going big or going home, I'm aiming to publish 4 books per year (Ideally, a 2/2 split) How do we get there? The easy answer is paid subscribers. Paid subscriptions help fund the books. If you can afford an upgrade to any level, please help if you can. If you cannot afford to upgrade, please continue to share on social media. \ \ My goal for the year is to reach 5,000 free Bindery subscribers, with an addition 10% paid (500) (Total, 5500 subscribers). \ \ That is a big goal, but I am passionate about what Bindery is doing and I think if you're following me here that you are, too! \ \ Are you a creator or author with a newsletter or Substack? Consider asking your subscribers to join our community for free!\ \ Our community reads books by diverse authors all year long. It's not enough to read the books. We should be reviewing them (on Goodreads or Storygraph) and sharing them on social media. Look how quickly the white ladies mobilized and were able to get a non-writer a book deal? If we work together, we can help author's with talent reach more readers. \ \ I talked about this last week but I want to emphasize it again: Marginalized authors depend on pre-sales! Pre-sales send a message to publishers that readers want more of these stories. If you haven't pre-ordered the books I've added to this post, please consider pre-ordering today!\ \ Cry, Voidbringer by Elaine Ho, the first book published under Michael Laborn's Bindery Imprint\ \ Love is a War Song by Danica Nava, Indigenous cowboy romance\ \ August Lane by Regina Black, Black small town romance about the visibility of Black women's voices in Country music\ \ Legendary Frybread Drive-in: Intertribal Stories: Indigenous YA anthology with interconnected stories of Native pride\ \ Beyond the Glittering World: An Anthology of Indigenous Feminisms and Futurisms , celebrating a rising generation of Native American storytellers\ \ Want to feel more connected to the community? Join the community Discord, participate in Book Clubs and Buddy Reads. \ \ Weekly Event: Tomorrow, Tuesday 5PM PST/8PM EST. Join us on Zoom for Monthly Wrap Up Yap where we all recommend books we've read this month! Hope to see you there.
