This horrifying retelling of the Pied Piper fairytale set in present-day Chicago is an edge of your seat, chills up the spine, thrill ride.

When Detective Lauren Medina sees the calling card at a murder scene in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, she knows the Pied Piper has returned.

When another teenager is brutally murdered at the same lagoon where her sister’s body was found floating years before, she is certain that the Pied Piper is not just back, he’s looking for payment he’s owed from her.

Lauren’s torn between protecting the city she has sworn to keep safe, and keeping a promise she made long ago with her sister’s murderer. She may have to ruin her life by exposing her secrets and lies to stop the Pied Piper before he collects.

[Hello My Friends,\ \ I've been working on so many thing but Return to Office has been kicking my butt, so I'm a bit behind on sharing!\ \ I'm so excited to be able to share our first WOMEN IN HORROR BOOK BINGO CARD!\ \ If you've been around for awhile, you are familiar with my Indigenous Book Bingo Cards (we currently have 3!) These are available in my Instagram Stories and in our Community Discord! (Join now if you haven't already!)\ \ I had so much difficulty limiting this to 25 books, so if you fear your favorite female author is missing, don't! There will definitely be more rounds of this game!\ \ I was STUNNED to see that with a total of 191 works being nominated for the Stoker Award best novel that only 26 WOMEN have been nominated since inception! (33 total as some were nominated more than once). That number is egregious. When Tananarive Due won in 2023 for The Reformatory, the last woman who won in the category was Caitlin R Kierman (who is problematic and not recommended) in .....2012!!! There have been times when every nominee in the category were men. There has NEVER been a time when every nominee was a woman.\ \ Women write incredible horror every year. Let's work together to help people read more women. I'll come up with some prize options and will post them in the Discord! There will be one more card coming this year, likely in December!\ \ Our Community Discord also hosts our Women in Horror book club. This month we are reading The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno Garcia and next month we are reading The Possession of Alba Diaz by Isabel Canes (and I've partnered with Berkeley to do a giveaway, so stay tuned!) I've also been working on some upcoming chats! If you're an author who would like to participate in chats, please reach out directly.\ \ If you appreciate the work that I'm doing there are three ways to support!\ \

  1. Go Shopping From This Post. I receive a small percentage from any purchase you make on Bookshop or Amazon from this post, including books not listed.\ \
  2. Upgrade your membership to the $5 or $12 tier. This community is striving to make change in the publishing industry. We are dedicated to publishing YA and Adult fiction by Indigenous authors and horror books written by women. Voices that need amplifying! We are currently guaranteed publishing one book per year. My goal is to be able to publish 4. My current goal is to reach 10,000 total subscribers. If you cannot afford a paid tier right now, please refer your friends join as free or paid members! And if you're reading this and not subscribed, please do so now!\ \
  3. All paid subscribers get behind the scenes access to the publishing industry and as we only recently selected a book, this is amping up now! Paid subscribers also get early copies of the books. Additionally, $12 and $25 subscribers get their name on the collaborator page!\ \ \ Thank you so much for being a member of this community!\ \

Happy Tuesday,\ \ Today’s post will be brief because I’m currently back home and recovering from my trip to Dallas for the Hay Festival Forum this past weekend. I feel like my brain chemistry was altered this weekend in a way that will shift all my work moving forward. I haven't gathered all my thoughts and I'm so exhausted right now, but you'll be getting a full wrap-up soon!\ \ As a reminder, giveaways for November’s book club selection, Salt Bones by Jennifer Givhan, are up exclusively for Libritos and Lectores members here, but you can also enter here (this giveaway is for ALL subscribers), as well on Tik Tok and Instagram for a total of 12 books I am giving away. All winners will be announced later today, so make sure to get your entries in soon!\ \ And I must apologize that time constraints kept me from creating this post before I left last week for Libritos and Lectores members. In addition, due to my tardiness and lack of time, not all books will have descriptions this week. We'll be back to normal programming later this week.\ \ So without further ado, let’s start off with the book of the week!\ \ \ \ Poppy State: A Labyrinth of Plants and a Story of Beginnings by Miriam Gurba (Audiobook) I can not tell you how excited I am for a book about California nature and flora written by one of my favorite and most searing voices of US Latine literature. This is possibly one of my most anticipated books of fall and possibly all of 2025 for me!\ \ PICTURE BOOK \ \ Frida Kahlo y Su Corona de Flores by Nydia Armedia-Sanchez and illustrated by Loris Lora\ \ LITERARY FICTION \ \ \ \ This Is The Only Kingdom by Jaquira Diaz (Audiobook) Mother and daughter wrestling with a murder set against the backdrop of a barrio in Puerto Rico\ \ \ \ Where the North Ends by Hugo Moreno\ \ IN TRANSLATION \ \ An Infinite Sadness by Antonio Xerxenesky and translated by Daniel Hahn\ \ \ \ Carne De Dios by Homero Aridjis and translated by Chloe Garcia Roberts\ \ YOUNG ADULT FANTASY \ \ \ \ Fall of the Fireflies by Guadalupe Garcia McCall (Audiobooks) First in the Seasons of Sisterhood trilogy a Mythology reimagining of Sophocles Antigone--available in both English and Spanish\ \ HORROR REISSUES \ \ \ \ The Shoemaker's Magician by Cynthia Pelayo (Audiobook)\ \ \ \ Children of Chicago by Cynthia Pelayo Adult Horror (Audiobook)\ \ ROMANCE \ \ Play You For It by Samantha Saldivar (Audiobook) In this sapphic romance, Journalist Caroline Beck believes that snagging an interview with Jordan D’Amato, the first female head coach of a Division 1 men’s basketball team, is the key to her big break. But what begins as a professional relationship soon transforms into chemistry that neither can resist, even as it puts their jobs at risk.\ \ NONFICTION \ \ \ \ Taco by Ignacio M. Sanchez Prado (Audiobook) You will never eat a taco the same way again--a deep dive into this food staple and its origins.\ \ xoxo,\ \ Carmen\ \ Join for free or login
