AN INSTANT USA TODAY BESTSELLER! Vampires and vaqueros face off on the Texas-Mexico border in this supernatural western from the author of _The Hacienda_.

As the daughter of a rancher in 1840s Mexico, Nena knows a thing or two about monsters—her home has long been threatened by tensions with Anglo settlers from the north. But something more sinister lurks near the ranch at night, something that drains men of their blood and leaves them for dead. Something that once attacked Nena nine years ago.

Believing Nena dead, Néstor has been on the run from his grief ever since, moving from ranch to ranch working as a vaquero. But no amount of drink can dispel the night terrors of sharp teeth; no woman can erase his childhood sweetheart from his mind.

When the United States invades Mexico in 1846, the two are brought abruptly together on the road to war: Nena as a curandera, a healer striving to prove her worth to her father so that he does not marry her off to a stranger, and Néstor as a member of the auxiliary cavalry of ranchers and vaqueros. But the shock of their reunion—and Nena’s rage at Néstor for seemingly abandoning her long ago—is quickly overshadowed by the appearance of a nightmare made flesh.

> And unless Nena and Néstor work through their past and face the future together, neither will survive to see the dawn.

I love horror. It's able to feature all sorts of genres and subgenres within its pages. With Valentine's Day coming up next week, I wanted to feature a few horror books with romance as part of the main plot or a sub plot.\\
\\
**Spit Back The Bones by Teagan Olivia King**\\
\\
This haunting Debut features a woman who reluctantly returns back home after her sister goes missing. There she rekindles an old flame, along with fighting a bog monster.\\
\\
**Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Canas**\\
\\
A tale of star crossed lovers who get trapped fighting vampires in the Mexican-American War. Pretty much any of Canas' works would fit into Horror Romance. (The Hacienda and The Possession of Alba Diaz)\\
\\
**The Haar by David Sodergren**\\
\\
For all you monster romance lovers out there this one is for you. It follows an old woman who lost her husband years ago. Now the small village she's lived in whole life is being threatened by a rich man buying out the land. And in walks a fish-like, shapeshifting monster...\\
\\
**Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison**\\
\\
Werewolf horror with humor and a splash of romance! This one will have you howling.\\
\\
**Bloom by Delilah S. Dawson**\\
\\
A "meat" cute at a farmer's market turns into sapphic love...or does it...\\
\\
**A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson**\\
\\
This one follows the brides of dracula as they move past their toxic relationship with him and turn what was once jealousy into a passionate romance.\\
\\
**Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno Garcia**\\
\\
Mexcican Gothic by this author works in this category as well! Silver Nitrate involves cursed media and lifelong friends who have feelings for one another.\\
\\
**Hiding Lies by Stephanie Rose**\\
\\
This romance is TOXIC, but super addicting. It's a cat and mouse novel involving a forensic photographer and s serial killer.\\
\\
**Dead Silence by SA Barnes**\\
\\
Think Alien meets Ghost Ship with a splash of romance! A crew finds a lost intergalactic cruise ship that's been missing for two decades. They decide to board the ship and fly it back, wanting to win fame and fortune... But theres a reason the ship has been missing...\\
\\
**Into The Drowning Deep by Mira Grant**\\
\\
A found footage esq novel involving killer sirens and a dash of some sapphic romance.\\
\\
What horror book that features a bit of romance do you love? \\

[fragrances can 100% immerse me more in stories!!](https://celestial.binderybooks.com/item/67wT7thPoO3lVtfA3mNI/)

fragrances can 100% immerse me more in stories!! disney rides have got this down pat lol. and scent is also SUPER connected to memories, so if I read a book and associate a scent with it, that’s bonus cool.

(tbh i could also do this with candles/diffuser oils that i burn while reading, but maybe that’s too niche???)

[Hello My Friends,\\
\\
I've been working on so many thing but Return to Office has been kicking my butt, so I'm a bit behind on sharing!\\
\\
I'm so excited to be able to share our first WOMEN IN HORROR BOOK BINGO CARD!\\
\\
If you've been around for awhile, you are familiar with my Indigenous Book Bingo Cards (we currently have 3!) These are available in my Instagram Stories and in our Community Discord! (Join now if you haven't already!)\\
\\
I had so much difficulty limiting this to 25 books, so if you fear your favorite female author is missing, don't! There will definitely be more rounds of this game!\\
\\
I was STUNNED to see that with a total of 191 works being nominated for the Stoker Award best novel that only 26 WOMEN have been nominated since inception! (33 total as some were nominated more than once). That number is egregious. When Tananarive Due won in 2023 for The Reformatory, the last woman who won in the category was Caitlin R Kierman (who is problematic and not recommended) in .....2012!!! There have been times when every nominee in the category were men. There has NEVER been a time when every nominee was a woman.\\
\\
Women write incredible horror every year. Let's work together to help people read more women. I'll come up with some prize options and will post them in the Discord! There will be one more card coming this year, likely in December!\\
\\
Our Community Discord also hosts our Women in Horror book club. This month we are reading The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno Garcia and next month we are reading The Possession of Alba Diaz by Isabel Canes (and I've partnered with Berkeley to do a giveaway, so stay tuned!) I've also been working on some upcoming chats! If you're an author who would like to participate in chats, please reach out directly.\\
\\
If you appreciate the work that I'm doing there are three ways to support!\\
\\
1. Go Shopping From This Post. I receive a small percentage from any purchase you make on Bookshop or Amazon from this post, including books not listed.\\
\\
2. Upgrade your membership to the $5 or $12 tier. This community is striving to make change in the publishing industry. We are dedicated to publishing YA and Adult fiction by Indigenous authors and horror books written by women. Voices that need amplifying! We are currently guaranteed publishing one book per year. My goal is to be able to publish 4. My current goal is to reach 10,000 total subscribers. If you cannot afford a paid tier right now, please refer your friends join as free or paid members! And if you're reading this and not subscribed, please do so now!\\
\\
3. All paid subscribers get behind the scenes access to the publishing industry and as we only recently selected a book, this is amping up now! Paid subscribers also get early copies of the books. Additionally, $12 and $25 subscribers get their name on the collaborator page!\\
\\
\\
Thank you so much for being a member of this community!\\

[I cannot believe we're already over halfway through the year and in AUGUST! Absolutely bonkers to me, this year (especially this summer) is just flying by. These are all the books I read in July with some of my thoughts. It was definitely a slower month for me but I enjoyed most of the books I did end up reading!\\
\\
**TOP 3 READS OF THE MONTH**\\
\\
Can't Get Enough by Kennedy Ryan (5/5 stars) -\> i am a firm believer that kennedy ryan can do NO WRONG. this was absolutely phenomenal and everything i wanted in the last in the 'skyland' series. mav and hendrix connected on so many levels, physically and mentally. the way they grew together and individually was absolutely beautiful and mav was SO DOWN BAD FOR HER!! i also adored how this book handled having an aging parent with alzheimer's and the struggles that came with that. highly recommend all the books in this series!\\
\\
The Lies of Ajungo by Moses Ume Utomi (5/5 stars) -\> this was such a pleasant surprise. i was not expecting an 86 page novella to hit this hard oh my godddd. the premise was so intriguing, i loved how we followed a 13 year old boy on a quest in the forever desert in search for water to bring back to his city and save his mothers life. the companions he made along the way, the revelations he had, EVERYTHING about this hit for me. i cannot wait to read the next two in the series!\\
\\
Voidwalker by S. A. Mclean (4.5/5 stars) -\> as a monster romance lover, this hit every box i wanted it to! this was such a fun time and i was absolutely hooked from beginning to end. fi was such a badass fmc who took no shit from anyone, and antal just gives 'looks that they could kill you but is a cinnamon roll'. their dynamic was absolutely hilarious and their banter was everything! this book was such a fun ride and i loooove my bi4bi couple. highly recommend this one when it releases this month!\\
\\
**EVERYTHING ELSE**\\
\\
Out of the Woods by Hannah Bonam-Young (4.25/5 stars) -\> i absolutely ate this one up! this follows characters that you meet in 'out on a limb' which is one of my favourite romance books ever. this one also has one of my favourite underrated tropes (marriage in crisis) and it was done soooo well. i loved the couples camping retreat, it was so funny especially because both our main characters are so nature adverse lol. i loved the way they grew individually and together as a couple and were able to work through the issues they were having. \\
\\
Try Your Worst by Chatham Greenfield (3.75/5 stars) -\> this was such a cute sapphic cozy mystery! this is rivals to lovers with our two main characters who ALWAYS prank each other, but when someone else starts pranking them both and our two main characters must work together to figure everything out. the characters were so cute and i loved the representation in this as well. one of my only complaints is that i felt like the ending was a little underwhelming and wrapped up too quickly for my liking. \\
\\
Lakelore by Anna-Marie McLemore (4/5 stars) -\> i didn't know what i expected going into this, but i liked this soooo much! this book focuses so much on identity, and mental health and i felt so seen by both of these characters. the talks about therapy, ADHD, anxiety, and dyslexia were embedded with such care and it was definitely the highlight for me. i wish there was a little more depth to the fantasy aspects of the underwater world and that was incorporated more but i highly recommend this one!\\
\\
When Among Crows by Veronica Roth (3/5 stars) -\> this one was a little disappointing to me. the premise was so interesting and i really with this was a full length novel. i think the magic system and the way it worked was soooo incredible and so much more could be done if it we had more time. the relationship went too fast for my liking and i felt like it wasn't very necessary to the story. i didn't really understand their attraction to each other and i wasn't too connected to the characters but i am interested in reading book 2 when it comes out. \\
\\
Fate of the Five by Niamh Rose (4.25/5 stars) -\> this was suchhhh a great debut! this year i've been wanting to read more books by indie authors and this one was so much fun. the political intrigue, the court dynamics, and the characters were all soooo good. i loooved the potential romance set ups, especially the slow burn MM romance brewing. the YEARNING was top notch and i can't wait to see what happens in the next book! my only gripe is that i felt like there were too many pov's (there were 9) and i definitely had my favourites to read from.\\
\\
The Gryphon King by Sara Omer (3.75/5 stars) -\> okay wow this one was sooo good in so many aspects! i loved how there were monstrous pegasi, gryphons, and so many animals. i wish we got into the lore a little more and saw more of the pegasi specifically but i adored how only women rode them into battle. the romance setup is so intriguing because the sapphic yearning was sooo good but i also think it may turn polyamorous??? sooo intrigured about that! this was action packed from beginning to end with lots of history and i had a great time!\\
\\
Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas (4/5 stars) -\> don't be fooled, this definitely leans more into historical romance than horror. despite that, i had a great time with this one and i was sooo invested in the relationship! néstor and nena's relationship was so tender and i loved how you could feel the love they had for each other from beginning to end. the exploration about the United States invasion in Mexico was so brutal and i felt every emotions the characters were going through. i cannot wait to read more books from this author!\\
\\
The Lure of their Graves by Laura R. Samotin (4/5 stars) -\> This is the sequel to The Sins on their Bones and it did not disappoint! This duology has become one of my favourites to recommend because of it's intriguing / atmospheric setting, the top tier character work, and the mental health representation. I love how it focuses on a main character finding themselves again after a mentally / emotionally / physically abusive marriage. I felt so deeply for Dimitri and everything he was going through with his ex-husband, and how draining that is on your mind and your body. I loved the support system he had as well, you can tell that his friends truly cared about him and his well being. I highly recommend this series but look up trigger warning first!](https://alyssaslibrary.binderybooks.com/item/ZuDq3V6ufILrDzHHR7mj/)

**I saw Sinners last night, which is an incredible new film by Ryan Coogler that mixes elements of historical fiction and the supernatural. Since seeing that film, I’ve been thinking about a few books. So here are characters from the film as books:******!CAUTION: SPOILERS!**** ****Smoke & Stack**** **_Ring Shout_ by P. Djèlí Clark** \\
\\
You may have seen this book on many lists connected to Sinners for multiple reasons. The story of Maryse and the resistance fighters takes place in Macon, Georgia in 1922. Like Smoke and Stack in Sinners, they fight their would-be oppressors who are literal monsters. Other similarities include body horror, art as power, ancestral connection, WWI veterans, and juke joints. \\
\\
**_Murder City: The Bloody History of Chicago in the Twenties_ by Michael Lesy** \\
\\
Smoke & Stack return to The Delta after many years in Chicago where they allegedly worked for “Capone.” This triggered my memories of reading Murder City when I was studying History in grad school. This book covers a ton of murders and a chunk of them are connected to Al Capone. Knowing this history gave me an understanding of just how dark Smoke & Stacks’s time in the city probably was and why they decided to go back home. \\
\\
****Annie**** **_The Monsters We Defy_ by Leslye Penelope** \\
\\
Another historical fiction that I think ties in nicely with Sinners is The Monsters We Defy. In 1925 Washington DC, Clara Johnson has a gift that allows her to see into the spirit world. She realizes she must gather accomplices to help her save the souls and futures of her community from a menace. When I saw Annie on the screen in Sinners, this book sprung to mind. \\
\\
**_Before I Let Go_ by Kennedy Ryan** \\
\\
This one may seem odd but stick with me!! In Sinners, Annie and Smoke see each other again after he lays flowers at the grave of their infant daughter. Like Yasmen and Josiah in Before I Let Go, they rekindle a love that was wounded by loss. Their chemistry is undeniable and feels deep. \\
\\
****Mary**** **_Passing_ by Nella Larsen** \\
\\
As the title implies, this book is about Irene, a woman who passes for white occasionally so that she can enjoy the basics of humanity that white folks in New York enjoyed in the 1920s. Irene doesn’t actually wish to be white, but her childhood friend Clare is entrenched in whiteness. It has given her a false sense of security that ultimately puts the Black folks around her in danger. Mary reminded me of this story because she believed her whiteness would help her people only to be the one to bring danger their way. \\
\\
**_Vampires of El Norte_ by Isabel Cañas** \\
\\
Similar to the film, the vampires in this book act as a colonizing force. It takes place in 1840s along the Mexico-Texas border just as the Mexican-American War begins. Nena, like Annie, is a healer who fights for her community. This book also centers around a romance that began in Nena and Néstor’s youth, as their families were intertwined, until Néstor leaves, similar to Stack and Mary. \\
\\
**"Preacher Boy" aka Sammie** **_The Fire Next Time_ by James Baldwin** \\
\\
One of the essays in this book describes Baldwin’s time as a child/teen pastor and his eventual withdrawal from the Christian faith because he felt repressed by it. He talks a bit about Christianity’s “white god” and the oppression connected to him. All of which made me think of Sammie’s father telling him to chose between his faith and his passion for music. Like Baldwin, “Preacher Boy” finds freedom in his art. \\
\\
**_The Ballad of Black Tom_ by Victor LaValle** \\
\\
This book is LaValle’s take on the Black character’s perspective in Lovecraft’s "The Horror at Red Hook," published in 1927. In this paranormal Historical Fiction story, Tommy is hired for many odd jobs including one where he must deliver a mysterious book to a woman in Queens. Suspicious of the book, he takes on page out and, soon after, asked to play the guitar for a white man’s party. Like Sammie, a money-making opportunity with his beloved guitar sends Tommy to a point of no return. \\
\\
****Remmick**** **_The Wages of Whiteness_ by David R. Roediger** \\
\\
This book was another gem from my studies in grad school and immediately came to my mind as I watched Remmick try to relate with the Black folks at the Juke Joint. Roediger has a chapter called “Irish-American Workers and White Racial Formation,” which explains how these immigrants who were treated only slightly better than Black folks joined the Democrats in the 1830s in order to join in the consolidation of European-Americans into whiteness. At the time, the Democrats were pro-slavery. So despite the fact that the Irish people were fleeing similar persecution from the English, they turned away from the persecuted Black folks of the U.S. in order to gain a spot of privilege. I thought about this as I saw Remmick choose a couple of Ku Klux Klan members as his first recruits. \\
\\
**I wanted to include more characters in this round-up but it seems that I haven’t read any books about Chinese-American folks in the American South or sharecropping and convict leasing.** ****If you have any books about those topics that you’d recommend, please share them in the comments!!****](https://bookish-afrolatina.binderybooks.com/item/Enhuq4ExlgPUxvoYqjPw/)
