When a demonic presence awakens deep in a Mexican silver mine, the young woman it seizes must turn to the one man she shouldn’t trust… from bestselling author Isabel Cañas.

In 1765, plague sweeps through Zacatecas. Alba flees with her wealthy merchant parents and fiancé, Carlos, to his family’s isolated mine for refuge. But safety proves fleeting as other dangers soon bare their teeth: Alba begins suffering from strange hallucinations, sleepwalking, and violent convulsions. She senses something cold lurking beneath her skin. Something angry. Something wrong.

Elías, haunted by a troubled past, came to the New World to make his fortune and escape his family’s legacy of greed. Alba, as his cousin’s betrothed, is none of his business. Which is of course why he can’t help but notice her every time she enters a room or the growing tension between them… and why he notices her deteriorate when the demon’s thirst for blood grows stronger.

In the fight for her life, Alba and Elías become entangled with the occult, the Church, long-kept secrets, and one another… not knowing that one of these things will spell their doom.

Welcome back to another Author Interview! Today I am joined by Haley Newlin, author of T _ake Your Turn Teddy, Not Another Sarah Halls ,_ and _The Film You Are About To See._\\
\\
\\
\\
**1\. I always use this first question as an introduction. Tell us as much or as little about yourself as you would like!**\\
\\
> I grew up on the theatrical terror of William Castle's gimmicks and Vincent Price films — both of which have heavily influenced my work. I have published three novels, including _Take Your Turn, Teddy_, and my latest release, _The Film You Are About To See_ which was featured on the 2025 Bram Stoker Reading List. I have written several short stories, including "The Butcher on Blue Jay Way," featured in Kandisha Press's _SLASH-HER: An Anthology of Women in Horror_, and a story in Nick Roberts’s forthcoming _Haunted Minds: Tales of Possession_ anthology. \\
> \\
> I am the managing editor for Cemetery Dance Magazine. When I’m not writing, I’m watching black-and-white horror films or reading horror books. I live in Indiana with my boyfriend and three dogs.\\
\\
**2\. I just saw the amazing news that you are the new Managing Editor for Cemetery Dance Magazine. That is so exciting. Care to tell us a little about what all that will entail?**\\
\\
> Thank you! I’m really excited about this new role. I’ve written for Cemetery Dance Magazine for about five years, mostly book reviews and author interviews. The managing editor curates this content, edits it, and publishes it. \\
> \\
> I’m excited to work on the next print magazine release.\\
\\
**3\. You currently have three books out. Do you have a favorite that you have written? Was there one that was harder to write than the others? One you have more of a personal connection to?**\\
\\
> _The Film You Are About To See_ is definitely my favorite. When I treat myself to some me time, I’m always watching an old horror flick like _The Tingler_(1959), _House On Haunted Hill_(1959), or _Cat People_(1942). \\
> \\
> I’ve always really loved Vincent Price and William Castle and have dreamed of seeing one of their films at the drive-in, my favorite place to watch horror movies. Then, I got to thinking about if I could host my own dusk til dawn night at the drive-in, what kind of movies would I show? How could I bring William Castle’s theatrical gimmicks to the drive-in setting? And the result -- _The Film You Are About To See_. \\
> \\
> I still can’t believe I got to write a book like _The Film You Are About To See_. It was just a blast. And the best part has been readers going and watching some of the films included on the marquee. I love nothing more than a tag on Instagram and someone shares that they read _The Film You Are About To See_ and are watching _Shock_ (1946), Vincent Price’s first starring role, or _The Tingler_, for the very first time. \\
> \\
> _Take Your Turn, Teddy_ was the most difficult book to write, and maybe that’s because it is the most personal. \\
> \\
> For a while, I said that _Take Your Turn, Teddy_ broke my brain. This story came together about a young boy who lives in an abusive home situation, and when he and his mother flee to a house in Indiana, he befriends a dark entity. \\
> \\
> In my childhood and teen years, most days just felt like survival. I didn’t feel that there was a lot of consistency in my life aside from abandonment, disappointment, and isolation. This is the type of narrative the shadow feeds to Teddy. He comes to believe the bad is his only constant. \\
> \\
> So, basically, I’d written some personal elements into what this road looks like for Teddy. Which, eventually, was cathartic. At first, it was grueling. Like pulling teeth. I’d leave the writing desk just feeling gutted and utterly exposed. But for some reason, I pushed through and kept writing. \\
> \\
> I’m glad I did.\\
\\
**4\. Are you working on any new projects at the moment?**\\
\\
> Too many! I am a firm believer in working on one project at a time. I want all of my creativity and ideas to channel into one project. But, my current project calendar has me working on a screenplay and two short stories, simultaneously, so it’s been an adjustment for sure. \\
> \\
> I begin drafting my next novel in June. I won’t say too much but it sort of feels like a sister novel to _Take Your Turn, Teddy_. It’s bleak and set in rural Indiana during the 1940s.\\
\\
**5\. I know you are a HUGE Vincent Price fan. What are your top three Vincent Price movies?**\\
\\
> I never get tired of answering questions like this! \\
> \\
> I really prefer Vincent Price’s films prior to the 1960s, but there is one exception and it’s first on my list. \\
> \\
> 1. _Diary of a Madman_ (1963) \\
> \\
> 2. _The Tingler_ (1959) \\
> \\
> 3. _House of Wax_(1953)\\
\\
**6\. Do you have any writing rituals or routines that help you get in the writing zone?**\\
\\
> I like to start each writing session by listing out a few things I’m most excited about within the project. Maybe it’s the setting, like 1959 at a dusk til dawn Spooktacular, hosted by the local drive-in (as in _The Film You Are About To See_), or a new piece of research I stumbled upon. Sometimes just being reminded of the passion and taking a moment to reconnect to it, makes a blank page less intimidating.\\
\\
**7\. What have been your top 2026 horror book releases?**\\
\\
> I can’t stop recommending _The Curse of Hester Gardens_ by Tamika Thompson and _I’ll Watch Your Baby_ by Neena Viel. \\
> \\
> _The Curse of Hester Gardens_ should be studied on college campuses. It’s a story about poverty, gun violence, familial bonds, curses and ghosts. It’s an unshakable and incredibly emotional read. \\
> \\
> _I’ll Watch Your Baby_ by Neena Viel (May 26, 2026) is inspired by Linda Taylor, known as the original Welfare Queen, who Ronald Reagan caricatured as the ultimate cheat of the system and by extension, the American people. I recommend going into this somewhat blind. The supernatural element and secondary POV come together so powerfully. \\
> \\
> It’s about generational and historical trauma, oppression, and the power of friendship. \\
> \\
> It’s quite visceral, terrifying, and unforgettable.\\
\\
**8\. Some of your favorite backlist titles?**\\
\\
> My favorite read of 2025 was Tananarive Due’s _The Reformatory_. I think everyone should read this book. It’s just brilliant. I’m actually currently reading a book recommended to fans of _The Reformatory_, called _Burn Down Master’s House_ by Clay Cane. It will absolutely make it on my list of top reads of the year. I can’t put it down. \\
> \\
> I also really enjoyed _The Possession of Alba Diaz_ by Isabel Canas. It has one of the most memorable endings I’ve ever read. I wanted to leap from my seat and yell “GOOD FOR HER!” \\
> \\
> A favorite nonfiction read that I can’t recommend enough is _Scream With Me_: _Horror Films and the Rise of American Feminism_ by Eleanor Johnson. It totally changed how I see adaptations of horror books like _The Shining_ and _The Exorcist._\\
\\
**9\. Being an indie author yourself, who are some of your favorite indie horror authors/books?**\\
\\
> I love the _Paisley Mott_ series by Kalvin Ellis, _Squirming All The Way Up_ by Joey Powell, _The Long Low Whistle_ by Laurel Hightower (my scariest read of 2025), and you can’t go wrong with anything from Viggy Parr Hampton, Spencer Hamilton, Briana Morgan, or RJ Joseph.\\
\\
**10\. What horror movies have you been watching lately/are on your radar?**\\
\\
> After reading _Your Favorite Scary Movie:_ by Ashley Cullins, I am looking forward to seeing _Scream 7_ once it hits streaming. I had no idea that the original screenwriter, Kevin Williamson, directed it. He’s been through so much with this franchise and the woes of Hollywood, that I was really excited to hear that he’s back. He always wanted _Scream_ to have a queer director, he said he just never would’ve thought that it would be himself. \\
> \\
> I’m rewatching the whole franchise. I’m currently on the second film, which I’m realizing is a lot better than people give it credit for.\\

I love horror. It's able to feature all sorts of genres and subgenres within its pages. With Valentine's Day coming up next week, I wanted to feature a few horror books with romance as part of the main plot or a sub plot.\\
\\
**Spit Back The Bones by Teagan Olivia King**\\
\\
This haunting Debut features a woman who reluctantly returns back home after her sister goes missing. There she rekindles an old flame, along with fighting a bog monster.\\
\\
**Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Canas**\\
\\
A tale of star crossed lovers who get trapped fighting vampires in the Mexican-American War. Pretty much any of Canas' works would fit into Horror Romance. (The Hacienda and The Possession of Alba Diaz)\\
\\
**The Haar by David Sodergren**\\
\\
For all you monster romance lovers out there this one is for you. It follows an old woman who lost her husband years ago. Now the small village she's lived in whole life is being threatened by a rich man buying out the land. And in walks a fish-like, shapeshifting monster...\\
\\
**Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison**\\
\\
Werewolf horror with humor and a splash of romance! This one will have you howling.\\
\\
**Bloom by Delilah S. Dawson**\\
\\
A "meat" cute at a farmer's market turns into sapphic love...or does it...\\
\\
**A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson**\\
\\
This one follows the brides of dracula as they move past their toxic relationship with him and turn what was once jealousy into a passionate romance.\\
\\
**Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno Garcia**\\
\\
Mexcican Gothic by this author works in this category as well! Silver Nitrate involves cursed media and lifelong friends who have feelings for one another.\\
\\
**Hiding Lies by Stephanie Rose**\\
\\
This romance is TOXIC, but super addicting. It's a cat and mouse novel involving a forensic photographer and s serial killer.\\
\\
**Dead Silence by SA Barnes**\\
\\
Think Alien meets Ghost Ship with a splash of romance! A crew finds a lost intergalactic cruise ship that's been missing for two decades. They decide to board the ship and fly it back, wanting to win fame and fortune... But theres a reason the ship has been missing...\\
\\
**Into The Drowning Deep by Mira Grant**\\
\\
A found footage esq novel involving killer sirens and a dash of some sapphic romance.\\
\\
What horror book that features a bit of romance do you love? \\

**Isabel Cañas brought the heat with _The Possession of Alba Díaz!_** As a young woman from a wealthy family living in 1765 Zacatecas, Alba yearns to gain control of her own life. Just as she sees a way forward through her engagement to her best friend, a plague forces both of their families to flee to his family’s isolated mine for refuge. This place rouses something strange within Alba. Something that Elías, her fiancé’s troubled cousin, can see.\\
\\
Once again, **Cañas brings us an Historical Horror Romance w/ feminist & anti-colonial themes.** This time, I was extra excited about the diverse cast. Throughout this story, we see the Indigenous peoples of Zacatecas, Criollos, & a character who’s mother was a Moor (Muslim peoples of Northern Africa).\\
\\
I loved listening to this book on audio! The tension was fantastic, as was the entire book. I felt like I was immersed in the storyline which made me want more, even when it ended well. **Y’all need to read this!!!**](https://bookish-afrolatina.binderybooks.com/item/zlM2SuM71pesGPI00WD5/)

[it’s time to talk about all the books i read in august! i read a total of 12 books and so many of them were amazing so let’s get into it:\\
\\
**TOP THREE READS:**\\
\\
Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah (5⭐️) -\> this is one of my new ALL TIME favourite books ever. i think this book is so important to read (especially now) because of the themes surrounding oppression, resistance, protests, and the state of the world as a whole. this is one of the best dystopian books i’ve read and this will stick with me for a long time (probably forever).\\
\\
My Friends by Fredrick Backman (5⭐️) -\> WOW. this book put me through all the emotions and i haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since i finsihed. the way fredrick backman created such a layered story with discussions surrounding life, death, mental illness, and friendships was absolutely spectacular. this was funny, heartwarming, and absolutely devastating all at the same time. highly recommend this one!\\
\\
Promise Me Sunshine by Cara Bastone (5⭐️)-\> one of my new alllll time favourite romance books! sometimes with romance i have a hard time not getting bored throughout if nothings happening lol BUT THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE ROMANCE!! the tension, the yearning, the ACTUAL SLOW BURN friends to lovers??? absolutely ate this up. the exploration surrounding grief and loss was spectacular. definitely a new fav!\\
\\
**EVERYTHING ELSE:**\\
\\
An Academy for Liars by Alexis Henderson (3.75⭐️)-\> this was my first book by this author and definitely not my last! this was the perfect dark academia, spooky, creepy read that i was looking for and i adored those aspects of the book! the only issues i had with this was the pacing (sometimes sooooo many things happened and sometimes nothing happened) and the romance. i didn’t feel connected to the characters enough to care about it but overall i enjoyed myself!\\
\\
Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar (4.5⭐️) -\> i don’t read a lot of literary fiction but this book was absolutely spectacular! i felt so deeply for cyrus and his story, and i was hooked from the first page. i can see why this book is so loved in the book community, it was so beautiful and definitely one i’ll be thinking about for a long time.\\
\\
Between Broomsticks & Beating Wings by Marissa Serrao (4.25⭐️) -\> this is an indie sapphic fantasy book that absolutely delivered! in this book we follow a human witch and a valkyrie where they strike a deal and have to venture into the underworld together. i thought the romance was so sweet and i loved the two characters individually and together. my favourite character was definitely the ghost cat tho :)\\
\\
The Possession of Alba Díaz by Isabel Cañas (4.5⭐️) -\> after reading the vampires of el norte, i knew i had to read this one and i loved it even more! this one was definitely more focused on the horror aspects than the romance but i thought both were so well done. the yearning was impeccable and i was so scared throughout most of the book lol. loooved this one sm!\\
\\
Blood Moon by Brittany S. Lewis (3.75⭐️) -\> this was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and i had a fun time with this one! this one felt so nostalgic and it very much reminded me of twilight lol. i thought the plot was so interesting (even though it was a little predictable) but i wasn’t invested in the romance that much. hopefully book 2 is even better!\\
\\
An Unlikely Coven by A. M. Kvita (4.5⭐️) -\> this debut cozy fantasy was SO ADORABLE! this is one of my new favourite cozy fantasy books with such an adorable cast of characters! joan was such an intriguing character to read from and i loved her little found family that she found <3 i HIGHLY recommend you get this one when it comes out in October!\\
\\
Artificial Wisdom by Thomas R Weaver (3⭐️) -\> unfortunately this was my least favourite book of the month. this is a scifi thriller that started off so strong but the farther i got into it, the less i started caring about the characters. i felt that this was very predictable and i wasn’t connected to anyone in this book. i was sad this didn’t work for me but you may enjoy it more than i did!\\
\\
I, Medusa by Ayana Gray (4.5⭐️) -\> one of THE BEST medusa retellings i’ve ever read! the writing was absolutely phenomenal, and i felt so much for medusa as a character. it was so interesting to see how she went from maiden, to mistress, to monster, and finally to myth. this was so hard hitting and I can’t recommend this one enough! definitely buy it when it comes out in October :)\\
\\
Climate of Chaos by Cassandra Newbould (3.25⭐️) -> i’m so sad i didn’t like this one more. this is a YA dystopian that follows a disabled protagonist (AMAZING!!) where she will do anything to get her sister back. i loved the representation in this, but i thought the plot was lacking. i also was not a huge fan of the romance lol because its lowkey second chance (ish?) but the mmc was not justifying cutting off the mmc. unfortunately this didn’t work for me :/](https://alyssaslibrary.binderybooks.com/item/WJ7hqtUKdV11F8Lht3FB/)

\\
Like most Virgos, I celebrate my birthday all season, so you'll have to excuse my mention of it eleventy billion times, but MY BIRTHDAY IS NEXT WEDNESDAY!\\
\\
In case you missed it, I am **giving away** a special edition box set of The Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemisin. You can enter here and you have until the end of the month to enter. (US only)\\
\\
Our **Women in Horror book club** is reading _The Possession of Alba Diaz_ by Isabel Cañas in September and I am **giving away** 5 copies. The winner will be selected Tuesday at 430pm PST. You can enter here. (US and Canada). \\
\\
Our **Good Day to Read Indigenous book club** is reading Legendary Frybread Drive-in: Intertribal Stories in September. \\
\\
Both bookclubs are held in Discord. If you aren't connected yet, you can connect through this page. \\
\\
The community **Discord i** s a great place to connect with other readers who enjoy reading diversely (even if you don't have time to participate in the bookclubs! There is literally a channel for everything (including HOT BOOK GOSSIP lol). If you are a paid member, you have access to a private paid member channel where we talk about all things publishing and you get to participate in some of the publishing decisions. Truly cool! \\
\\
Speaking of paid members, people keep asking **how best to support Boozhoo Books**. Well, it's my birthday month, what a perfect time for you to **upgrade**! Why upgrade? A portion of your monthly fee goes into the production of the books. Yes, this means that the more paid subscribers I have, the more books we will be able to publish. We are currently approved to publish one book per year. My goal is to be able to publish four books per year. (2 women in horror, 2 books by Indigenous authors would be the ideal breakdown, but is very much dependent on the manuscripts submitted both directly and by agents). I also use a good portion of subscriber money to ship giveaways that are not held in conjunction with publishers. (the NK Jemisin in shipping directly from me, for example).\\
\\
$5 subscribers will get ebook copies of all of our published books. \\
\\
$12 and $25 will get physical copies and their names on the contributor page. (How freaking cool is that!) \\
\\
If you can commit to subscribing for the entire year for $5 a month, it would be at the price of buying two hard cover books! \\
\\
**Other Ways To Support**\\
\\
**Shop My Pango!**I've still got 115 books listed and I'm trying to make money to pay for my October NY trip. If you didn't hear the news, I was accepted as a Content Creator for New York Comic Con! (While I get into the con for free, I'm still paying for travel expenses!) and luckily celebrating the releases of the new Bindery Books the same week! (It's a holiday week, so I will be shipping Weds August 27 (my birthday. yes, I'm going to the post office on my birthday LOL) and then not again until Weds, September 3. I've got a lot of great stuff listed and am adding new books every day!\\
\\
**Use the books tagged in one of my Bindery posts when you go book shopping online!** Anytime you click on one of the books attached to these posts and go shopping, I earn a small percentage, even if you don't buy any of the books I listed. (And if you buy from bookshop dot org, you are also supporting Black Walnut Books, an Indigenous owned bookstore!) \\
\\
**Share This Community!** If you're just not spending money right now, the easiest way to help is spread the word about this community and encourage your friends to join FOR FREE! I have a free follower goal of 10,000 and it is a BIG goal that I won't be able to reach without you. If you have friends that read diverse books, please encourage them to join!\\
\\
**Upcoming Events**\\

[Happy Tuesday, mis internet amigxs!\\
\\
We have a few announcements before we get to this week's releases!\\
\\
Our book club chat with Venessa Vida Kelley is up on YouTube! We chatted for over an hour last week and then they chatted a little more with book club privately after the recording ended. It was a fantastic evening. This is a private link, exlusive for Bindery subscribers only!\\
\\
I haven't heard from Raquel Vazquez Gilliland nor Isabel Canas regarding author chats for September and October book club author chats, but I'm not losing hope!\\
\\
HOWEVER, this post is the early launch for a GIVEAWAY of our September book club selection, Lightning In Her Hands by Raquel Vazquez Guilliland! I am giving away one copy of the book exclusively to a lucky Libritos or Lectores subscriber! All you have to do is like and comment ⚡and you'll be entered to win a copy of the book! Sorry, this giveaway is for US subscribers only! I'll pick the winner on Friday, August 22nd and will email you at the email address you followed me on Bindery to confirm address details and you'll have 24 hours to reply to claim your book. Good luck! You'll also have another chance to enter on Tuesday with the New Latinx Book Tuesday post AND I'll be announcing social media giveaways as well, so LOTS of chances for free books!\\
\\
If you're a Libritos or Lectores member, you have an exclusive giveaway for the book HERE!\\
\\
Next up, we have book club discussion with THE Silvia Moreno-Garcia! We'll be chatting The Bewitching and I'm so excited and nervous! I'll be posting the Zoom registration link this week.\\
\\
A NOTE ON FORMAT! I didn't realize until someone pointed out to me that including book links were redundant when I add the books as Books Mentioned at the bottom of the post, so, moving forward, I'll only feature audiobook links through LibroFM (their romance sale ends August 20th!) and book purchase links for any I can't add through Books Mentioned. I appreciate you all working through all the kinks as I learn and understand Bindery.\\
\\
AND FINALLY! Due to technical difficulties (when I worked in IT, we called it user error), a few August 12th releases weren't included in last week's newsletter. I have added them to this one for you and noted their release date.\\
\\
I didn't mean for the introduction this week to be SO LONG, so let's get started with the BOOK OF THE WEEK...\\
\\
\\
\\
The Possession of Alba Diaz by Isabel Canas (Audiobook) The setting: haunted mines in Mexico. Another sweeping historical horror romance as only Isabel could write it that's just right for spooky season AND our October book club selection! [Happy Saturday, mis internet amigxs!\\
\\
I'm thrilled to be back celebrating Latine releases this week. I mentioned it on Threads earlier today, but while publishing may be pumping out more Latinx books ahead of Latinx Heritage Month, I'm not expecting much promotion from them to celebrate the Heritage Month itself. Several authors and publishing friends have chimed in to agree that they're seeing less support this year as well. As the trend away from diversity continues in publishing, particularly in sales and marketing, I feel the work of putting out this weekly newsletter increases. I appreciate you all being here and supporting the work I am doing. It's not always easy, but knowing you all have my back is incredibly affirming.\\
\\
In light of these changes, I'm noticing, I'm considering something and wanted to run it past you...In the past, I've discussed expanding my work to YouTube at some point in the future, and I do have several drafts that I'm working on editing when I have time, but I think I may switch to a podcast format instead where I interview Latinx authors and luminaries. I have a poll up on Discord if you'd like to vote and add to the discussion going on. The poll will be up until tomorrow! I welcome and encourage your feedback!\\
\\
Speaking of author interviews, our chat with Venessa Vida Kelley is up on YouTube! We chatted for over an hour earlier this week and then they chatted a little more with book club privately after the recording ended.\\

[Poll:\\
\\
Are any of these on your TBR?\\
\\
Hi nerds,\\
\\
Last night we held our second installment of the Sunny's Salon—a monthly addition to our event programming that is like a book club with no assigned reading. We kicked off the night by doing a 15 minute reading sprint with some lofi music playing in the background and then went into a larger discussion centered around or Last, Now, and Next. It was so fun hearing about what people were reading or had on their radar (weirdly three people wanted to read Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh next) and seeing where reading taste overlapped and differed. Below you will find 50 (!) book recommendations gathered from the Yuma community.\\
