A powerful reimagining of the story of Ganga, goddess of the river, and her doomed mortal son, from Vaishnavi Patel, author of the instant New York Times bestseller Kaikeyi.
A mother and a son. A goddess and a prince. A curse and an oath. A river whose course will change the fate of the world.
Ganga, joyful goddess of the river, serves as caretaker to the mischievous godlings who roam her banks. But when their antics incur the wrath of a powerful sage, Ganga is cursed to become mortal, bound to her human form until she fulfills the obligations of the curse.
Though she knows nothing of mortal life, Ganga weds King Shantanu and becomes a queen, determined to regain her freedom no matter the cost. But in a cruel turn of fate, just as she is freed of her binding, she is forced to leave her infant son behind.
Her son, prince Devavrata, unwittingly carries the legacy of Ganga’s curse. And when he makes an oath that he will never claim his father’s throne, he sets in motion a chain of events that will end in a terrible and tragic war.
As the years unfold, Ganga and Devavrata are drawn together again and again, each confluence another step on a path that has been written in the stars, in this deeply moving and masterful tale of duty, destiny, and the unwavering bond between mother and son.

[Hello loves! I hope you’re having a wonderful start to your week! We had a long weekend here in Canada so I’m just getting back into things today.\ \ \ \ What’s going on with me:\ \ So I’ve finally admitted to myself that I have too many things going on and need to let something go. In this case it’s cooking!\ \ I have been saying that I’ll do more meal prep for months but each week comes and I’m still struggling to find food to eat or am forgetting to buy groceries on time.\ \ Solution? I’m going to try a meal plan service that makes pre-made meals and ships them to me at the start of each week. Let me know if any of you have tried this before! I’m a little wary but will report back on what I think.\ \ \ \ How I’m doing ~ mentally ~\ \ I had a really rough few days mentally because I missed a dose of my bipolar medication on Wednesday night. You would think that a single dose wouldn’t make much difference but alas the mood swings and depression came through in full force. Although I had taken the day off on Thursday & Friday so that I could do some YouTube work, I ended up being a pile of sadness instead which was not fun lol.\ \ I’m doing better now but this whole affair just reminded me of how every day is a battle when you have a mental illness.\ \ \ \ What I’m working on this week:\ \ I recently bought a new camera that I’d been eyeing for awhile and I’ve been testing it out for the past week. Although I filmed my Asian Heritage Month book recs video with it, I’m still deciding whether I want to refilm it with different settings. Regardless, stay tuned for a new look in my videos!\ \ Upcoming videos:\ \
- My favourite books by Asian authors (recommendation video for Asian Heritage Month / AAPI month)\
- Mood read with me | a realistic reading week with me\
- Queer/LGBTQIAP+ book recs\
- A Special Announcement 👀\ \ \ \ What I’m currently reading:\ \
- Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami — I cannot express how much I love this book already. It taps into so many feelings I have around being a woman, having a womb, and being expected to structure my life around getting married and having kids. Highly recommend checking it out!\
- Goddess of the River by Vaishnavi Patel — I’m a third into this one with the audiobook and am loving it! It really feels like an old tale being told to me and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the story goes.\ \ \ \ What I’m watching:\ \ I think the missed dose and bad mental health had a factor into this but I’m only 2 episodes into Bridgerton season 3 🙈Yes, I know—seems odd for me since I really love the series but I honestly couldn’t bring myself to watch while I was suffering mentally.\ \ Hopefully I can get the chance to finish the next two episodes soon! If you’ve watched the new season let me know what you thought of it!\ \ ](https://boundless.binderybooks.com/item/CX5hagUKMDN8TDPEixZU/)

[Hello loves!\ \ It’s a new month and a new week which means a new journal update!\ \ What I’m in the middle of:\ \
- I am FINALLY done reading all the books for the vlog where I read booktubers’ favourite books of 2023. All I can say is that the last book was a RIDE. I’m going to film an outro for the video this week and hopefully edit and get it up for next week.\ \
- **February content planning! **I’ve got most of my videos locked down but if you have any content requests, please leave them in the comments ASAP!\ \ \ What I’m currently reading:\ \
- I’m starting A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum today, which is the February pick for my book club, the Boundless Book Club. If you’re not joining along on Fable then please do so! It really helps me out as a creator when you guys click these links and join! ++https://fable.co/club/boundless-book-club-with-jananie-k-velu-111751962292++\\ \
- I was also BLESSED by the book gods yesterday and received an advanced reader copy of Goddess of the River\\ **by Vaishnavi Patel—who if you may remember is the author of one of my favourite books ever— Kaikeyi! I’m so hyped to read this new book from her and will definitely keep you all posted on what I think of it!\ \
- Still just barely into _**Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands **_but already loving being back with our characters <3\ \ \ What’s currently giving me stress:\ \ - My health 😵💫 I have a chronic health issue that’s recently gotten worse over the winter months and I can’t tell if I’ve triggered it by something I’ve changed in my habits or if it’s just stress/seasonal depression related. Regardless, I had to take it easy a few days this week and it was frustrating not being able to get my Wednesday video up on the channel. However, I’m trying to not let it stop me and trying to look on the bright side of things!\ \ What I’m loving right now:\ \\- Desperate Housewives! **Y’all I started this show a couple weeks ago and it has a CHOKEHOLD on me. I’ve never seen it before and had always assumed it was some reality TV show based off the title, but now I’m a whole season in and absolutely addicted. It’s become my new show to watch when I need to decompress and definitely kept me company while I was ill this week.\ \ That’s all from me for today! Let me know what you’re all up to and what you’re reading <3](https://boundless.binderybooks.com/item/OMeYZye7ynYbQY7La1gc/)
