“Sutanto brilliantly infuses comedy and culture into the unpredictable rom-com/murder mystery mashup as Meddy navigates familial duty, possible arrest and a groomzilla. I laughed out loud and you will too.” —USA Today (four-star review).
“A hilarious, heartfelt romp of a novel about—what else?—accidental murder and the bond of family. This book had me laughing aloud within its first five pages… Utterly clever, deeply funny, and altogether charming, this book is sure to be one of the best of the year!” —Emily Henry, New York Times bestselling author of Beach Read.
One of NPR's Best Books of 2021! One of PopSugar’s "42 Books Everyone Will Be Talking About in 2021"!
What happens when you mix 1 (accidental) murder with 2 thousand wedding guests, and then toss in a possible curse on 3 generations of an immigrant Chinese-Indonesian family? You get 4 meddling Asian aunties coming to the rescue!
When Meddelin Chan ends up accidentally killing her blind date, her meddlesome mother calls for her even more meddlesome aunties to help get rid of the body. Unfortunately, a dead body proves to be a lot more challenging to dispose of than one might anticipate, especially when it is inadvertently shipped in a cake cooler to the over-the-top billionaire wedding Meddy, her Ma, and aunties are working at an island resort on the California coastline.
It's the biggest job yet for the family wedding business—“Don't leave your big day to chance, leave it to the Chans!”—and nothing, not even an unsavory corpse, will get in the way of her auntie's perfect buttercream flowers.
But things go from inconvenient to downright torturous when Meddy's great college love—and biggest heartbreak—makes a surprise appearance amid the wedding chaos. Is it possible to escape murder charges, charm her ex back into her life, and pull off a stunning wedding all in one weekend?

[Hello loves! I’m writing to you from aboard a Trenitalia train from Rome to Florence in Italy. I’m currently on vacation for two weeks and unfortunately struggled to find the time to write a post before I left home last week, but thankfully, trains are perfect for journaling :)\ \ \ \ What’s going on with me:\ \ As I said, I’m currently in Italy on vacation!! My partner and I have been in Rome since Sunday and we attended a friend’s destination wedding there on Tuesday. There were a few pre- and post-wedding events so it definitely ate up a few days in our itinerary but I honestly didn’t mind since each event (+ the wedding) was incredibly fun and I just loved hanging with everyone there. I definitely bruised my feet from all the dancing in heels but it was 100% worth it ;)\ \ With our last two days in Rome after the wedding we went on a couple of tours — one for the Vatican museum, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica, and then another for the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and Roman Forum. The Colosseum tour was definitely a favourite for me because I studied Latin and classical civilizations for 4 years in high school so it definitely brought back memories. However, both tours were equally well executed, well explained, and had great local tour guides who were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. If you’re planning on visiting Italy at any point I highly recommend using the tour company we used — Walks of Italy (Colosseum tour , Vatican tour).\ \ Next up on our itinerary is Florence for a couple days to see the city, Statue of David (in the Uffizi Gallery), and the famous Duomo. We’ve already bought our museum tickets and have a tour booked so I feel really chill going into everything — thank god for planner-Jananie from a month ago lol because otherwise I’d be stressed.\ \ After Florence we’ll be heading to Sicily and renting a car to drive around the island and see the small towns and beautiful beaches. We went with renting a car vs. taking trains because a lot of the beaches are very hard to get to via public transportation and I honestly don’t mind road-trip driving. I am a little anxious however after seeing the chaotic driving in Rome but for the most part I won’t be driving within any of the cities/towns — I’ll just be driving to get us from one to another.\ \ \ \ How I’m doing ~ mentally ~\ \ I’m doing okay! Travelling is definitely stressful at times, especially when you’re traveling with someone new and when you’re tiring yourself out each day with a packed schedule. The insane heat and humidity in Rome over the past few days has definitely not helped with my moods either as I’ve been regularly exhausted by the heat, dehydrated, and for the most part hangry in the mornings. I’ve had to carry around a fan with me in my pocket everywhere we go because the heat just feels incredibly suffocating.\ \ Anyways, I’m hoping Florence will be a bit cooler so we can enjoy ourselves better and now that the wedding is over I feel like I can relax a bit more as well (and will also be less hungover everyday lol). I’m definitely most excited for the beaches in Sicily as I feel that it’ll be a bit calmer so we’ll see.\ \ All in all, trying to take deep breaths when things don’t go quite as planned and trying to remember that this is just a vacation and only meant to be fun :)\ \ \ \ What I’m working on this week:\ \ So while I did pre-film a couple of videos before leaving for Italy, I did not get the chance to edit them before I left. I even brought my laptop with me to try and edit on the plane but it was deeply uncomfortable and I was just so exhausted because we were on a red eye flight. One video is a queer/LGBTQIAP+ book recs video and the other is “short books you can read in a day each”. I’m hoping I can find the time to at least edit the queer book recs video before pride month is over but we’ll have to see!\ \ Aside from that I’m very happy to say that I had a quick meeting over zoom yesterday evening with the Bindery team, Girl Friday Productions, and the author of our inaugural Boundless Press title, Deena Elgenaidi, to discuss the initial concepts for the cover of DUST SETTLES NORTH!! 🎉 Charlotte Strickland (head designer for Bindery) shared three different concepts for the book’s cover and took us through her ideas and composition. Deena and I were pretty much on the same page thankfully and while we were on the call we provided our thoughts on all three concepts and then provided more specific feedback on the concept we preferred. I personally found the concepts to be a little too soft and did not feel like an adult fiction novel cover (they looked younger, almost YA to me). Charlotte will be getting back to us with a few revised versions of the preferred concepts (different title treatments, colourways, and textures) and then we’ll either do another call or review over email.\ \ Needless to say I am SO excited that we’re at this point in the journey, reviewing covers — everything feels so surreal and I’m just so grateful for it all. Once I’m back from vacation I will film a whole video on the covers process to share with you all and hopefully before then I can also share with you the revised versions of the preferred concept. More to come!!!\ \ \ \ What I’m currently reading:\ \
- Ghosts by Dolly Alderton— oh my god I can’t describe to you how HOOKED I am on this book. I started it on a whim over a lunch break a couple days before vacation and since then I’ve been itching to read more whenever I’ve had a spare moment over the trip. I don’t particularly think this book is incredibly special or original but I do think that the author has done an excellent job of describing exactly how it feels to be a single straight/hetero person in your late twenties/early thirties dating in the age of dating apps and people who ghost. It delves into the disconnect in experiences between the single vs. married/parent friends and the differing life stages and lifestyles which put a strain on long term friendships. The book has basically summarized so many of my personal feelings about these topics from the past year or so and I’m just savouring every last word.\
- Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto — I started the audiobook for this one before I left on vacation and am absolutely loving it. Haven’t had the chance to listen further than about 20% but I definitely plan to get to it soon since it’s already so funny and charming.\ \ \ \ What I’m watching:\ \ Not watching anything at the moment but my partner and I did binge watch season 1 and 2 of a show called_** Lady Parts**_ before we left on vacation. The show is a bit of a dramedy and follows several different women in London who form a punk band called Lady Parts. All the main characters are Muslim and they are all Arab, Black, or South Asian, which is honestly so refreshing coming from a western show where BIPOC characters are usually just supporting characters. The London setting is charming and every character is well fleshed out and endearing. We actually get to see them sing and perform a few of the fictional band’s songs as well and each track is a banger I must say haha. Highly highly recommend — the episodes are only 20-30 mins so it’s definitely a quick and fun watch!\ \ \ \ Alright, that’s all from me for now, hopefully I can find a moment later in the trip to update you all but if not, I hope you can forgive the reduced content this month because I’ll have a LOT more when I’m back :)](https://boundless.binderybooks.com/item/UdBCtSKQvrHFt7UMLiAj/)

How Similar Is Our Taste in Books?
How Similar Is Our Taste in Books? +10 points if you’ve read it +5 points if it’s on your TBR 500 possible points (including Finding Gene Kelly 😉)
This is DEFINITELY a non-exhaustive list—there were so many I had to cut out because I didn’t want it to be 500 slides long. But I feel like this is a decent grasp of my tastes?
I’ve absolutely been loving this trend and I had to participate, even if I’m a little bit late to the game (as usual lol)
