From World Fantasy Award-winning author Tasha Suri comes The Isle in the Silver Sea, a heart-shattering standalone romantasy of sapphic longing, medieval folklore and a love that spans the centuries.
In an England fuelled by stories, the knight and the witch are fated to fall in love and doom each other over and over, the same tale retold over hundreds of lifetimes. Simran is a witch of the woods. Vina is a knight of the Queen’s court.
When the two women begin to fall for each other, how can they surrender to their desires, when to give in is to destroy each other? As they seek a way to break the cycle, a mysterious assassin begins targeting tales like theirs.
To survive, the two will need to write a story stronger than the one that fate has given to them. But what tale is stronger than The Knight and the Witch?

Isle in the Silver Sea reads as both a love letter to storytelling and a clear warning about its dangers. The tension between those two truths gives the novel its emotional depth and its political urgency, especially within a sociopolitical moment shaped by propaganda and misinformation, where stories flatten people into symbols and demand obedience rather than truth.\
\
Through a folkloric structure built on stories within stories, Tasha Suri examines how narratives preserve worlds while also trapping those forced to live inside them, revealing how easily repetition hardens into destiny and how often survival requires questioning the version of the story everyone else insists on telling.\
\
The novel follows Simran, the Witch, and Vina, the Knight, the latest reincarnations of an ancient tale known as The Knight and the Witch, a story the Isle depends on for survival, a story meant to be reenacted across lifetimes, a story whose ending demands love followed by mutual death for the supposed good of the land. Both women understand their roles with painful clarity. They know the shape of their future before their story even begins. They know devotion leads to destruction. They know resistance has never worked before.\
\
Yet this time, something fractures. Other incarnates begin dying early, something once thought impossible, and the rules that once felt immutable begin to show seams. As Simran and Vina work together to unravel what has been woven into the Isle itself, the book transforms from mythic tragedy into a meditation on agency, inheritance, and refusal, asking whether preservation without consent deserves to survive at all.\
\
One of the novel’s greatest strengths lies in its worldbuilding, which resists excess while achieving depth. The Isle, a magical and unsettling reimagining of an Arthurian England, feels alive rather than decorative. Magic, witches, fae, monarchs, and knights exist not as spectacle but as consequences of a system sustained through repetition and belief. The land breathes. The land remembers. The land demands performance. Colonialism and racism exist beneath the Isle’s polished myths, acknowledged not as background detail but as structural forces shaping who belongs and who remains “other,” even across lifetimes. The Isle does not feel neutral. It feels invested. It feels hungry.\
\
The characters move through this world with a reverence that feels intentional. No one exists for convenience. No one feels disposable. Every choice carries weight, and when characters leave the narrative or change shape within it, the outcome feels earned rather than imposed. Vina, disciplined and bone deep in her sense of duty, begins as distant and fatalistic. Yet, her vulnerability emerges through family wounds, emotional disconnection, and an almost resigned acceptance of annihilation as purpose. Simran, sharp, protective, and shaped by unkindness, burns with defiance and love in equal measure, carrying both fury and care in every decision she makes. Their dynamic balances yearning with grief, attraction with dread, desire with the knowledge of what desire costs.\
\
The romance refuses cynicism. Love in this book is treated as sacred, whether romantic, platonic, familial, or found, and every expression of it carries tenderness and risk. The yearning between Simran and Vina feels vast and consuming, shaped as much by fate as by longing, and their connection highlights how love becomes both refuge and rebellion within systems built to control. Found family, cultural memory, and reconnection to place weave through the narrative, offering grounding even when biological or historical ties remain complicated or painful. Within a genre where sapphic relationships often absorb harm for narrative effect, this book insists on devotion, care, and mutual recognition as worthy and necessary.\
\
At its core, the novel interrogates narrative authority. The Isle survives by enforcing stories. People survive by obeying them. Identity becomes performance. History becomes script. Those born into incarnations inherit meaning before choice. This framework mirrors lived trauma, where stories assigned by family systems, institutions, and culture shape identity long before consent enters the room. The book understands how repetition trains belief, how silence reinforces harm, and how questioning the story threatens collapse.\
\
This theme resonates deeply with therapeutic work. Clients often arrive carrying stories forged under fear, shame, survival, or control. Those stories feel immovable because they were learned when safety depended on belief—therapy challenges narrative ownership. Therapy asks who wrote the first version. Therapy slows the pace enough for revision. In that space, people rewrite. They rebuild. They reclaim. They move from symbol back into personhood.\
\
Isle in the Silver Sea embodies this process through its structure. It refuses a single authoritative version of events. It honours multiplicity. It treats context as essential rather than optional. It shows how healing restores complexity rather than simplicity, how truth expands once silence loosens its grip.\
\
The novel also interrogates assimilation and preservation, revealing how desperate adherence to tradition risks stagnation and collapse. By reworking foundational British myths, the story exposes the fragile line between honouring history and suffocating beneath it, mainly when survival depends on perfect reenactment rather than growth.\
\
Beautiful and sharp, inevitable yet surprising, this book lingers because it understands something essential. Stories shape worlds. Stories shape people. Stories preserve and destroy. The power lies not in abandoning narrative, but in reclaiming authorship, and in choosing who gets to speak, who gets to live, and who finally gets to decide how the story ends.\

I owe you a post, more like I owe you a lot of posts. If you can't tell, November kind of passed me by in a whirlwind and I need to do a better job of figuring out how to stay on top of things because I feel like I have forgotten about y'all more than once. I actually came on her to say that I am working my way through ten before the end, which is more like 20 before the end because I'm a mood reader and I also read fast so I have a stack of like 35 books and I'm hoping at least 10 of them will work for me.\
\
So far I have finished Warrior Princess Assassin by Brigid Kemmerer (4 stars), All Superheroes Need Photo Ops by Elizabeth Stephens (5 stars), Savage Blooms by St. Gibson (5 stars), Say a Little Prayer by Jenna Voris (5 stars), and Son of the Morning by Akwaeke Emezi (4 stars). I NRN'd (not right now) Arcana Academy by Elise Kova. I'm currently reading Isle in the Silver Sea by Tasha Suri. This is my first Tasha Suri book and five chapters in and I can tell I will need to be reading her backlist.\
\
My thoughts so far: WPA was my first Kemmerer book and I liked her writing style, I was hooked and kept turning pages because I wanted to know what happened. I don't know if I would love her YA stuff as much because I really enjoyed the forbidden aspect of this MMF romance and the secrecy. I can't wait of book 2. Elizabeth Stephens wrote her FREAKNASTIEST book yet, and in her patreon she said blame it on her pregnancy hormones, but Darius said crawl and I almost got on my own damn knees. I think I've never given St. Gibson less than a perfect 5 star and this was no different. It gave me all the vibes of Thornchapel, my fave Sierra Simone series but damn it left us on quite a cliffy. Also super gay, we love. Say a Little Prayer was my book club pick this month and for all the religious trauma girlies, this one is going to be for you. It's YA and the FMC really is very teenagery. Also the titles of the chapters, honestly the writing style in general was so funny! Let but not least, this was Emezi's spiciest book yet, and it's an MFM that evolves into and MMF and I love that for us. I was hoping to have the same deconstruction vibes I got when I read The Fall That Saved Us, which is one of my favorite books of all time, but it just didn't hit as good, I think there could have been more explored in terms of Galilee's identity, I still loved it, I just wanted more, hence the 4 stars.\
\
As far as Arcana Academy, I was bored. But I'm going to give it another try later because I really enjoyed the other books by Kova I've read.\
\
Also we raised approximately $7,500 for foodbanks across the US during our Read to Feed auction and read-a-thon. If you participated, thank you so much! I am working on a more realistic posting schedule and more tuned on content for next year. I hope you all stick with me.

[Hello friends, and welcome back to my weekly newsletter! I had a new five-star read this week that I absolutely loved! And in honor of daylight savings and the sun now setting at 4:30 pm, I thought I would recommend some books where "darkness" is part of the magic system.\
\
- *\
\
Reading Updates Audiobook | DNF: What the River Knows \
\
DNFed at: 41%\
\
Thoughts: There were parts of this story that interested me. I really liked the setting and I was intrigued by the mystery, magic, and banter between Inez and Whit. Unfortunately, the main character was so insufferable that I couldn't enjoy the story and had to stop reading. The audiobook narrator definitely made it worse, but I would have struggled regardless.\
\
Paperback | Currently Reading: To Bargain with Mortals \
\
Progress: 61%\
\
Thoughts: I'm really enjoying To Bargain with Mortals! I really love the way this book is challenging Poppy's character and forcing her to confront her bias and privalege. I am excited (and STRESSED) to see how the characters face the impossible tasks in their future.\
\
Ebook (ARC) | Finished: The Fake Divination Offense \
\
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐\
\
Release Date: May 19, 2026\
\
Thoughts: Apparently I only read my ARCs really early or really late lol. Bramble blessed me with very early access to The Fake Divination Offense, the follow-up to An Entanglement of Rival Wizards. This was exactly what I wanted it to be: a fun, sweet, sexy fantasy rom-com. I really love the way that Sara Raasch balances spicy romance plots with emotional character arcs and relationships. I do feel like the story started to feel a little bit too over the top towards the end. The severity and scale of the plot along with the realtionship dynamic became a bit hard to take seriously. I do prefer the first installment simply because the relationship dynamic and setup interested me more in The Entanglement of Rival Wizards. But I would eagerly pick up even more romance stories set in this world, and I am excited to read more from Sara Raasch. \
\
Audiobook + Ebook | Finished: The White Octopus Hotel \
\
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐\
\
Thoughts: I absolutely loved The White Octopus Hotel. I was immediately captivated by this time-bending spiral of a story. The White Octopus Hotel is a quiet, almost melancholy, story about grief, love, hope, and healing. It is about forgiving yourself and finding a hand in the dark. There is a subtle sense of surrealism and magic woven throughout this story that keeps you guessing. I loved uncovering each new layer of the story. It always felt like there was something dark lurking in the background of the hotel, lending the story a slightly gothic feel. Bell really captures the haunting nature of grief and guilt. There is a quiet emotional weight to the character relationships in this story. I loved how raw and real Max and Eve's relationship felt and the unflinching way they handled each other's darkest truths. I cannot recommend this enough to fans of The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden.\
\
- *\
\
Future Reading Plans \
\
This past reading week was filled with a lot of unexpected reads so my future reading plans remain very similar to last week including: The Everlasting, The Sacred Space Between, and Kill The Beast.\
\
\
\
One new addition to my immediate TBR is my most recent Illumicrate book: The Isle in the Silver Sea. I admit I'm not as confident that this will be a win for me, but my friends have been giving this glowing reviews so I remain optimistic.\
\
I also have Ancillary Justice and City of Dragons in my library on Libby as possible audiobook reads. Not sure if either of these will make for good audiobook reads but I need to focus on my physical TBR in these last two months.\
\
- *\
\
Book Recommendations \
\
As promised I bring you dark/shadow magic recommendations! Light and dark as some of my favorite themes to explore in fantasy books and I love seeing the unique ways they are incorporated into worlds and magic systems.\
\
\
\
Dark Rise: I am not so patiently waiting for news of the third book in this series. In this historical fantasy world the ancient magic has long been lost after the destructive war between the Dark and the Light. Our main character Will discovers that he may actually be deeply connected to this magical world and he has an important role to play in the oncoming battle against the Dark. I love a story about the manifestation of darkness and light and the way that history can be retold and warped. This book also plays with reincarnation and fate. The character relationships are so emotional and the sequel is even better!\
\
\
\
Book of Night: The second book in this duology recently came out so I found myself rereading the first book to prepare for the sequel's release. Book of Night follows ex-con artist and thief Charlie who is trying (not that hard) to live a normal life. One night she finds herself forced into a deal with the man who haunts her nightmares. He wants her to track down his missing book of shadow magic. In this urban fantasy world certain people have the ability to manipulate their shadows, using these "quickened" shadows to performs magical feats. But there is always the deadly risk of a shadow absorbing too much from their host and gaining sentience as a blight. Though the world building is a tad undeverdeloped, I found myself so invested in these characters and the romance subplot.\
\
\
\
The Serpent and the Wolf: Though I haven't talked about this book much, The Serpent and the Wolf is a romantic fantasy that I really enjoyed! Vaasa is forced into an arranged marriage and tasked by her brother to use her marriage to infiltrate the rival kingdom. Vaasa chooses to take her fate into her own hands and escapes on her wedding night. But her new husband, Reid, tracks her down and makes a deal with her, one that could change the fate of both kingdoms. One of the things I loved most about this book was the emotional story of healing and the way that Vaasa's relationship with her shadowy magic represented her trauma and her journey of recovery.\
\

If you have any specific book recommendations that you've been looking for let me know and I'd be happy to include them in the next newsletter. See you next week with more reading updates and book recommendations.\
