“Garnering justified comparisons to Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns... Etaf Rum’s debut novel is a must-read about women mustering up the bravery to follow their inner voice.” —Refinery 29
The New York Times bestseller and Read with Jenna TODAY SHOW Book Club pick telling the story of three generations of Palestinian-American women struggling to express their individual desires within the confines of their Arab culture in the wake of shocking intimate violence in their community.
“Where I come from, we’ve learned to silence ourselves. We’ve been taught that silence will save us. Where I come from, we keep these stories to ourselves. To tell them to the outside world is unheard of—dangerous, the ultimate shame.”
Palestine, 1990. Seventeen-year-old Isra prefers reading books to entertaining the suitors her father has chosen for her. Over the course of a week, the naïve and dreamy girl finds herself quickly betrothed and married, and is soon living in Brooklyn. There Isra struggles to adapt to the expectations of her oppressive mother-in-law Fareeda and strange new husband Adam, a pressure that intensifies as she begins to have children—four daughters instead of the sons Fareeda tells Isra she must bear.
Brooklyn, 2008. Eighteen-year-old Deya, Isra’s oldest daughter, must meet with potential husbands at her grandmother Fareeda’s insistence, though her only desire is to go to college. Deya can’t help but wonder if her options would have been different had her parents survived the car crash that killed them when Deya was only eight. But her grandmother is firm on the matter: the only way to secure a worthy future for Deya is through marriage to the right man.
But fate has a will of its own, and soon Deya will find herself on an unexpected path that leads her to shocking truths about her family—knowledge that will force her to question everything she thought she knew about her parents, the past, and her own future.

[Hello loves!\ \ It’s a new month and a new week which means a new journal update!\ \ What I’m in the middle of:\ \
- I am FINALLY done reading all the books for the vlog where I read booktubers’ favourite books of 2023. All I can say is that the last book was a RIDE. I’m going to film an outro for the video this week and hopefully edit and get it up for next week.\ \
- **February content planning! **I’ve got most of my videos locked down but if you have any content requests, please leave them in the comments ASAP!\ \ \ What I’m currently reading:\ \
- I’m starting A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum today, which is the February pick for my book club, the Boundless Book Club. If you’re not joining along on Fable then please do so! It really helps me out as a creator when you guys click these links and join! ++https://fable.co/club/boundless-book-club-with-jananie-k-velu-111751962292++\\ \
- I was also BLESSED by the book gods yesterday and received an advanced reader copy of Goddess of the River\\ **by Vaishnavi Patel—who if you may remember is the author of one of my favourite books ever— Kaikeyi! I’m so hyped to read this new book from her and will definitely keep you all posted on what I think of it!\ \
- Still just barely into _**Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands **_but already loving being back with our characters <3\ \ \ What’s currently giving me stress:\ \ - My health 😵💫 I have a chronic health issue that’s recently gotten worse over the winter months and I can’t tell if I’ve triggered it by something I’ve changed in my habits or if it’s just stress/seasonal depression related. Regardless, I had to take it easy a few days this week and it was frustrating not being able to get my Wednesday video up on the channel. However, I’m trying to not let it stop me and trying to look on the bright side of things!\ \ What I’m loving right now:\ \\- Desperate Housewives! **Y’all I started this show a couple weeks ago and it has a CHOKEHOLD on me. I’ve never seen it before and had always assumed it was some reality TV show based off the title, but now I’m a whole season in and absolutely addicted. It’s become my new show to watch when I need to decompress and definitely kept me company while I was ill this week.\ \ That’s all from me for today! Let me know what you’re all up to and what you’re reading <3](https://boundless.binderybooks.com/item/OMeYZye7ynYbQY7La1gc/)
open for this week's journal update!

Reading around NYC- A Bookish Guide! General Lit Vol. 1
Reading around NYC- A Bookish Guide (General Lit Part 1!)
If you are looking for some NYC based books to read- look no further! This list is vetted by my book club (@pagingthroughthecity) where we read a new book set in NYC every month and discuss them where they are set!
Check out our June events that were just posted if you are local!
Book- Just Kids by Patti Smith Where to Read- Washington Square Park Why? This memoir is a time capsule of a NYC that has quickly changed *but* Washington Square Park seems to be one pocket that seems similar to the energy of Patti Smith’s NYC.
Book- The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath Where to Read- Central Park, specifically Bethesda Fountain Area Why? Esther tries to find solace at the Boston Common after a difficult time interning in NYC. As someone who also has had mental health struggles- being out in nature has helped me.
Book- A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum Bay Ridge, Brooklyn- more specifically with pizza at Elegant Pizzeria. Why? This multigenerational story of immigration, culture and assimilation (or the lack thereof) is confined mostly to the neighborhood of Bay Ridge- a thriving community of immigrants and home to Little Palestine.
Book- Go Tell it on the Mountain by James Baldwin Where to Read- James Baldwin Park Why? Baldwin has been such an important literary figure and honoring him with a beautiful park in Harlem is just a small part of his legacy.
Book- City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert Where to Read- The rooftop at Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) Why? While the theater and block where most of the book action takes place was demolished for the Port Authority Bus Terminal. I think this *free* public rooftop is still a great place to soak up the energy of midtown Manhattan and read.
