“The queer romance we’ve been waiting for.”—Ms. Magazine.

Seventeen-year-old Lily Hu can't remember exactly when the feeling took root—that desire to look, to move closer, to touch. Whenever it started growing, it definitely bloomed the moment she and Kathleen Miller walked under the flashing neon sign of a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club. Suddenly everything seemed possible.

But America in 1954 is not a safe place for two girls to fall in love, especially not in Chinatown. Red-Scare paranoia threatens everyone, including Chinese Americans like Lily. With deportation looming over her father—despite his hard-won citizenship—Lily and Kath risk everything to let their love see the light of day. (Cover image may vary.)

[You definitely aren’t alone, I’m also navigating the wild, winding road of self-discovery—and let me tell you, it’s not a one-and-done kind of deal. For many of us, “coming of age” happened in adolescence—awkward braces, bad haircuts, and maybe a few embarrassing crushes. But honestly? That was just the opening act. The real, adult coming of age happens when you realize that life, love, and even your own desires are way more complicated (and way more exciting) than a teen rom-com.\ \ A Second Coming of Age—Because Who Says It’s Over?\ \ If you’re anything like me, you've spent years unpacking some pretty heavy stuff—religious upbringing, conservative values, judgments about your body, your sexuality, your worth. Maybe you’re still peeling back those layers, questioning everything you once believed. That’s what I call the second coming of age. And surprise: it’s just as messy, honest, and life-changing as the first.\ \ This second round is about re discovering yourself—your desires, your boundaries, and your capacity to love and be loved. It’s about deconstructing old narratives and rebuilding a version of yourself that’s more aligned with who you really are. And let’s be real: navigating this while unlearning a lot of shame—especially around sex and intimacy—can feel like trying to do a puzzle in the dark. But here’s the thing: you’re allowed to stumble, fumble, and laugh at yourself along the way.\ \ As a therapist, I see so many clients (myself included) who are just unraveling the layers of what society, religion, or family told us about our bodies and feelings. It’s often uncomfortable, sometimes heartbreaking, but also incredibly empowering. One thing I’ve learned: exploring our sexuality and love is a profoundly human experience. It’s about curiosity, honesty, and damn, a lot of patience with ourselves.\ \ Romance Novels: Your Secret Weapon (And Yes, They’re Actually Good for You)\ \ Now, here’s a little secret I tell my clients: romancelandia is more than escapism—it's a safe space to learn about desire, consent, emotional intimacy, and even—let’s be honest—how to flirt without dying of embarrassment. Whether you’re looking for inspiration, validation, or just a good laugh, romance books can be a tool for understanding your own wants and needs.\ \ They give us permission to explore love in all its messy, imperfect glory. Plus, reading about people falling in love might just inspire you to do the same—without the heartbreak of bad dates or awkward moments (well, mostly). It’s like practice for real life, but with less risk and more happily-ever-afters.\ \ Books That Might Help You Level Up in Love and Self-Discovery\ \ Coming of Age in Youth:\ \

The Second Coming of Age: Self-Discovery, Love, and a Little Rebellion

Banned Books Club - Book 1- Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo

Banned Books Club - Book 1- Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo Last Night at the Telegraph Club has been banned in school districts in the following states: North Carolina, Florida, Utah, South Carolina, Maryland, Texas, Virginia, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Tennessee, & Alaska (2021-2024 school years) https://pen.org/book-bans/pen-america-index-of-school-book-bans-2023-2024/

According to the author Malinda Lo, BookLooks* rated Last Night at the Telegraph Club as “Not For Minors,” and claims the book “contains obscene sexual activities; sexual nudity; alternate sexualities; and derogatory term.” As someone who actually read the book, i know that none of the experiences the main character has are graphic or lewd. They just depict the life of an average teenage girl. Teens explore and it’s wild to pretend that this book would be the inspiration for that. Of course, the “alternate sexualities” they’re referring to is likely tied to the main character being a lesbian.

According to Book Riot, "across Moms For Liberty Facebook groups, as well similar “parents rights” groups across the country, a new resource has emerged heeding the call: BookLooks...It is a tool developed by Moms For Liberty being used to push their agendas even further under the guise of protecting children."

Why I Recommend This Book: I love this book for so many reasons! Malinda Lo places readers in Lily's (MC) shoes and includes timelines, footnotes, flashbacks, and an author's note in order to help readers understand the context of Lily's story. The timelines include the Chinese Exclusion Act, World War II, and McCarthyism, among other things. Lo is able to include traditional Chinese characters, as well as romanizations of Mandarin & Cantonese w/ the help of footnotes.

How to Access This Book: Queer Liberation Library @queerliblib , The Banned Book Club by DPLA @digpublib , Books Unbanned (by Brooklyn Public Library), & your public library. If you’ve been on BookTok in the last few days, I’m sure you’ve seen the several few accounts talking about how we should keep politics out of the BookTok space. I won’t give you their account names, their full arguments, because frankly they don’t deserve the time of day, but I want to be crystal fucking clear: Reading is political. It has always been political.\ \ Anti-literacy laws made it illegal for enslaved and free people of color to read or write. Between 1740 to 1867, it was illegal to even teach POC to read or write.\ \ Why? Because to read is to inform. To learn. To uplift and expand. To liberate. Literacy and education was, and still is, a threat to white heteropatriarchy.\ \ In 2023 alone, the American Library Association (ALA) tracked 4,240 unique titles of books that faced censorship attempts, a 92% increase from the year prior. This does not include what’s called “soft censorship,” where “books are purchased but placed in restricted areas, not used in library displays, or otherwise hidden or kept off limits due to fear of challenges illustrate the impact of organized censorship campaigns on students’ and readers’ freedom to read.” This is just the tip of the iceberg, because many book challenges are not even reported to the ALA.\ \ Of these 4,240 books, “titles representing the voices and lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC individuals made up 47% of those targeted in censorship attempts.”\ \ 47% PERCENT. The most challenged reportedly being the incredible memoir Gender Queer by Maia Kebab.\ \ Project 2025 holds extreme views about book bans. It is an extension of arguments we've already se en: that all LGBTQ content is pornography; that all the people who make it are pedophiles; that the teachers and librarians who allow kids access to LGBTQ books are groomers. This is where those arguments lead. First Amendment rights will not apply, meaning we will no longer have freedom of speech to protect us.\ \ According to the New York Times, researchers surveyed 1,300 U.S. library workers in 2022, who reported that they had "experienced more than 8,000 incidents that the researchers labeled traumatic, such as threats, assault or harassment. The library workers also cited other stressors that made their jobs more difficult, including conflicts with library administrators, aging buildings and the fallout over book bans."\ **Libraries are meant to be a safe space, but because of book bans and budget cuts (hello Eric Adams!) our libraries are threatened. **Brooklyn Public Library founded Books Unbanned in 2022 to support the rights of teens nationwide to read what they like, form their own opinions, and work together with peers across the nation to defend and expand the freedom to read. Student aged (13-26) U.S. residents can get digital library card full access to a number of libraries so they can read banned books no matter where they live.\ \ In publishing Sapph-Lit books, in sharing sapphic stories and celebrating queer joy and supporting LGBTQIA+ authors, we are engaging in a political act. \ \ Below are some of my favorite banned books. Which is your favorite?\ \ 01. The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison\ 02. Beloved by Toni Morrison\ 03. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky\ 04. All Boys Aren’t Blue by George Johnson\ 05. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls\ 06. Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien\ 07. Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins\ 08. They Both Die at the End by Adam Silver\ 09. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini\ 10. Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel\ 11. The 1619 Project by Nikole Hannah-Jones\ 12. Fun Home by Alison Bechdel\ 13. Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender\ 14. Critical Race Theory by Kimberle Crenshaw\ 15. Persepolis by Maryjane Satrapi\ 16. Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison\ 17. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou\ 18. Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo\ 19. Red at the Bone by Jaqueline Woodson\ 20. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Reading is Political

Duh. But especially now that I run a sapphic publishing imprint.
