WANTED – Bloodmaid of exceptional taste. Must have a keen proclivity for life’s finer pleasures. Girls of weak will need not apply.
A young woman is drawn into the upper echelons of a society where blood is power in this dark and enthralling Gothic novel from the author of The Year of the Witching.
Marion Shaw has been raised in the slums, where want and deprivation are all she knows. Despite longing to leave the city and its miseries, she has no real hope of escape until the day she spots a peculiar listing in the newspaper seeking a bloodmaid.
Though she knows little about the far north—where wealthy nobles live in luxury and drink the blood of those in their service—Marion applies to the position. In a matter of days, she finds herself the newest bloodmaid at the notorious House of Hunger.
There, Marion is swept into a world of dark debauchery. At the center of it all is Countess Lisavet.
The countess, who presides over this hedonistic court, is loved and feared in equal measure. She takes a special interest in Marion. Lisavet is magnetic, and Marion is eager to please her new mistress.
But when she discovers that the ancient walls of the House of Hunger hide even older secrets, Marion is thrust into a vicious game of cat and mouse. She’ll need to learn the rules of her new home—and fast—or its halls will soon become her grave.

[Hello everyone! This journal entry was supposed to go up over 2 weeks ago but alas here we are 😩\ \ Today is my birthday (yes, i am a very libra baby 😌) and I’m sitting at the crowded cafe on my day off typing frantically away so I can this entry out to you!\ \ First off, welcome to another month, another it’s-almost-the-end-of-the-year-so-i’m-freaking-out moment of the year. Today I am twenty seven years old and in some ways I feel so completely old and in other ways I feel utterly too young to be allowed to take care of myself. Thankfully, one thing that always does a good job of distracting me from staring down the doom of being one more year closer to death is that my birthday is on the beautiful cusp between summer and fall and all I want to is curl up in coziness and get ready for all the spookiness to come this season.\ \ \ \ What’s going on with me:\ \ It’s been a busy few weeks for me recently and in-between lots of personal events, the horrible state of the world, and being ill for a bit I honestly can’t believe how quickly the time has flown.\ \ Over the last few weeks I:\ \
- Finally unpacked the final things in my new apartment\
- Hosted a chill housewarming party with friends\
- Went to the eye doctor after years to find out that my eyesight has regressed badly since my laser eye surgery in 2021. I now need glasses again for seeing things far away (TV, monitor, boards/screens at work, etc), though it’s still not as bad as my pre-LASIK eyesight and my new glasses are cute enough.\
- Thrifted a BEAUTIFUL vintage Moroccan rug and some wonderful art for my library room\
- Attended a friend’s baby shower and then proceeded to read up on postpartum psychosis and came to the realization of how difficult it would actually be for me to ever handle a pregnancy with my mental illness\
- Was in charge of a full day photo & videography shoot for work\
- Listed and sold ALL FOUR of my bookshelves on Facebook Marketplace 🤭\
- HOSTED a baby shower for a family member\ \ \ \ \ \
- Planned and ran a bachelorette weekend cottage getaway for one of my childhood friends—we went to a few wineries and played board games at the cottage and overall had a wholesome time haha\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \
- Planned and HOSTED the bridal shower for the same friend the next weekend (it was Cinderella themed and absolutely adorable if I do say so myself)\
- Got a couple old cavities recleaned and refilled at the dentist 😭\
- Got my 100k subscribers YouTube Play button plaque in the mail!\ \ \ \ \ \
- Had some serious personally stressful things come up which triggered a flare up in my chronic digestive issues which basically left me stuck at home, in pain, and unable to eat properly for a couple weeks.\
- In the downtime I did make some headway on planning the redecoration of my office/library room but was definitely still deeply stressed out by Israel’s recent heinous attacks on Lebanon and have been listening to and checking the news incessantly hoping to not wake up to more death and destruction each morning. My partner is Lebanese so these past weeks have been extremely hard on him and I’m just trying to find the best way to be present for him and support him through this horrible time.\ \ \ \ \ \
- Over the past weekend, with the help of my boyfriend, I finally put up the new shelves, art, and decorations for my library room and I am in LOVE with how it turned out. [see the photos below for a sneak peek]\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \
- Thankfully I was also able to recover health-wise this past weekend and was able to go see Billie Eilish in concert in Toronto last night!\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ In the next few weeks I:\ \
- Have my birthday party to plan for next week! [it’s going to be Pride and Prejudice themed 😌]\
- Have a halloween party to plan for the end of the month and will need to figure out my DIY costume\
- Will be flying to New York in another ten days for the Bindery fall launch and will be staying with a friend to make a whole trip out of it!\ \ \ \ How I’m doing ~ mentally ~\ \ As you can tell it’s been a busy time for me [more so than usual lol] but I’m surprisingly holding up. I keep thinking back to this time last year and even years previous, and I have never been so proud of my own growth and how far I’ve come.\ \ Two years ago on my birthday I was wishing I wasn’t alive as I fell deep into my worst bipolar depressive episode to-date. Last year, I was in Paris on my own, traveling and seeing bookstores across the world and figuring out who I wanted to be for myself. This year, today, I woke up next to the love of my life, tried a Pilates class for the first time and struggled epicly with a big smile on my face, and I am now having a quiet afternoon at the cafe catching up on youtube work before a nice dinner out.\ \ I have never been so deeply happy with the small joys in life, and I have never been so grateful for the life I have and the breaths I take, which so many others around the world have been robbed of whether by mental illness or by horrible political powers that seek to wipe them out. If you’re struggling with mental illness, please know that you are in my thoughts ♥️ and if not, I hope you can keep the people of Palestine and Lebanon and Syria and Yemen in your thoughts and hearts and keep fighting against the zionist regime.\ \ \ \ What I’m working on this week:\ \
- Finishing filming my library room redecoration/tour video and editing that to go up next week\
- Filming a vlog reading Intermezzo — I’m sure you’ve seen all the hype for this book and although I’ve had a hit-or-miss experience with Sally Rooney’s books I am hoping that this one will be a new favourite!\ \ \ \ What I’m currently reading:\ \ Academy of Liars by Alexis Henderson — I am already OBSESSED with this book omg. I had an e-ARC of this but only had the chance to start it this past weekend. I really loved House of Hunger by this author which was a wonderful and sumptuous vampire book, but THIS BOOK wow. The writing style and voice in this one is a bit different and definitely more of that contemporary fantasy / thriller vibe and it’s just everything I love — a mentally ill character figuring themselves out and getting into deeper [potentially magical] trouble.\ \ What I’m watching:\ \ I recently finished watching part 1 of the new season of Emily in Paris and it was deliciously stupid and frivolous as usual so it was highly entertaining lol. I still need to find a day to watch part 2 but I’m excited for it.\ \ I’ve also been rewatching Gilmore Girls for the millionth time since fall is here and it’s just the perfect show for cozy season. I’m already on season 2 and am enjoying myself immensely. I do have to say that the first 3-4 seasons are probably my favourite because after that Rory kinda gets annoying lol.\ \ \ \ Alright, that’s all from me! Let me know how you’re all doing, what you’re reading, and what you’ve been up to these past few weeks! 🙂\ \ ](https://boundless.binderybooks.com/item/lYZbHujiEehIZoY7hDX7/)

If I were to go back and get my masters it would be in southern gothic literature. Toni Morrison was one of my favorite authors to study in college. Delving into Song of Solomon and Beloved shifted the paradigm with which I had measured the world. Southern gothic literature is eerie, haunting, brutal. It sticks with you. It’s good to read books like that sometimes. And it’s good to expand the diversity of what you read, and who you read.
Give me your favorite southern gothic books! Also, can’t forget short stories. Love me a good southern gothic short story.
And if there are any writers writing, or have southern gothic books- I’d love to hear about them. We need more.

[Hello My Friends,\ \ I've been working on so many thing but Return to Office has been kicking my butt, so I'm a bit behind on sharing!\ \ I'm so excited to be able to share our first WOMEN IN HORROR BOOK BINGO CARD!\ \ If you've been around for awhile, you are familiar with my Indigenous Book Bingo Cards (we currently have 3!) These are available in my Instagram Stories and in our Community Discord! (Join now if you haven't already!)\ \ I had so much difficulty limiting this to 25 books, so if you fear your favorite female author is missing, don't! There will definitely be more rounds of this game!\ \ I was STUNNED to see that with a total of 191 works being nominated for the Stoker Award best novel that only 26 WOMEN have been nominated since inception! (33 total as some were nominated more than once). That number is egregious. When Tananarive Due won in 2023 for The Reformatory, the last woman who won in the category was Caitlin R Kierman (who is problematic and not recommended) in .....2012!!! There have been times when every nominee in the category were men. There has NEVER been a time when every nominee was a woman.\ \ Women write incredible horror every year. Let's work together to help people read more women. I'll come up with some prize options and will post them in the Discord! There will be one more card coming this year, likely in December!\ \ Our Community Discord also hosts our Women in Horror book club. This month we are reading The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno Garcia and next month we are reading The Possession of Alba Diaz by Isabel Canes (and I've partnered with Berkeley to do a giveaway, so stay tuned!) I've also been working on some upcoming chats! If you're an author who would like to participate in chats, please reach out directly.\ \ If you appreciate the work that I'm doing there are three ways to support!\ \
- Go Shopping From This Post. I receive a small percentage from any purchase you make on Bookshop or Amazon from this post, including books not listed.\ \
- Upgrade your membership to the $5 or $12 tier. This community is striving to make change in the publishing industry. We are dedicated to publishing YA and Adult fiction by Indigenous authors and horror books written by women. Voices that need amplifying! We are currently guaranteed publishing one book per year. My goal is to be able to publish 4. My current goal is to reach 10,000 total subscribers. If you cannot afford a paid tier right now, please refer your friends join as free or paid members! And if you're reading this and not subscribed, please do so now!\ \
- All paid subscribers get behind the scenes access to the publishing industry and as we only recently selected a book, this is amping up now! Paid subscribers also get early copies of the books. Additionally, $12 and $25 subscribers get their name on the collaborator page!\ \ \ Thank you so much for being a member of this community!\ \

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil
It’s been awhile since I posted a moody setup, but if ever there was a book that deserved one ifs this one. Bury Our Bones is my everything.
V.E. Schwab has been my favorite author since 2015 and vampires have been my favorite since 2006, so those two things coming together like this had basically changed my life. This book is flawless. I wanted nothing more and nothing less than what I got.
Also, all vampire stories should be sapphic from now on. Thank youuuu.

Sapphic Reading Challenge Recommendations: Vampires
Happy Sapphic Sunday Wanderland Fam!
Today’s recs are for the vampire prompt on the Sapphic Reading Challenge. What are some of your favorite sapphic vampire romances?
If you haven’t already, please download the new template bc there were changes made after I learned that MENA is a eurocentric name for the decolonized term SWANA, which is now used in its place, and a prompt specifically for Pacific Island authors and South Asian authors were added as well as some free spaces for your favorite BIPOC sapphic books (so the template was balanced!)

Genre Fiction Books by Black American Authors (My B&N had not one single table set up)
I think a few of the booksellers at this location follow me so if you see this 👀👀👀 “accidentally” send it to your manager. 🧍♀️ There are DOZENS of tables at this store alone and not one was set up for Black History Month when I was there twice last week. We should be celebrating black voices in publishing all the time, but to not be doing so at a bare minimum of during BHM?? There’s like 4 different subgenres of romance tables but not one Black Voices table, c’mon. Anyway here’s like 30 books I quickly pulled off my own shelf, a mix of books I’ve read and loved and books on my TBR 📚 #booktok #bookrecs #tbr #barnesandnoble #fantasybooks #horrorbooks #yabooks #bookshopping #sacramento #booktoker #emmaskiesreads #books

August 2022: THRUST
The kind of book you can read 20 times and always learn something new. A wild cast of characters connected through time travel, this book is fiercely feminist and deliciously mind-boggling.
September: TOMORROW AND TOMORROW AND TOMORROW
Just a little book that no one has heard of (jokes: it won the ‘best book of the year’ pretty much everywhere). An ode to love, loss, and redemption set in the world of gaming. This book is a delight.
October: HOUSE OF HUNGER
Need a gothic horror centered around classism, blood as currency, and dangerous liaisons? Look no further.
November: SCYTHE + MY FIRST POPSICLE
Scythe: our only YA pick of the year and the start of a series that Inky club members can’t get enough of. Imagine a world without natural death, hence the need for gleanings to regulate the population. Whoa.
Our non-fiction pick: @zosiamamet curated a delightful book of essays around the power of food, including recipes and a vast array of names you’ll certainly know.
December: KINDRED
Decided to wrap the year with Octavia Butler’s classic. She braided the slave narrative with time travel and fantasy, resulting in a completely unique and gut-wrenching look at the antebellum south.
