In the first book of a visionary fantasy trilogy with its roots in the mythology of Africa and Arabia that “sings of rebellion, love, and the courage it takes to stand up to tyranny” (Samantha Shannon, author of The Priory of the Orange Tree), three women band together against a cruel empire that divides people by blood.

“A game-changing new voice in epic fantasy . . . There are no Chosen Ones here, only bad choices and blood.” —Tasha Suri, author of The Jasmine Throne.

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Oprah Daily, Autostraddle.

Red is the blood of the elite, of magic, of control. Blue is the blood of the poor, of workers, of the resistance. Clear is the blood of the slaves, of the crushed, of the invisible.

Sylah dreams of days growing up in the resistance, being told she would spark a revolution that would free the empire from the red-blooded ruling classes’ tyranny. That spark was extinguished the day she watched her family murdered before her eyes.

Anoor has been told she’s nothing, no one, a disappointment, by the only person who matters: her mother, the most powerful ruler in the empire. But when Sylah and Anoor meet, a fire burns between them that could consume the kingdom—and their hearts.

Hassa moves through the world unseen by upper classes, so she knows what it means to be invisible. But invisibility has its uses: It can hide the most dangerous of secrets, secrets that can reignite a revolution. And when she joins forces with Sylah and Anoor, together these grains of sand will become a storm.

As the empire begins a set of trials of combat and skill designed to find its new leaders, the stage is set for blood to flow, power to shift, and cities to burn.

Hi Party People and Disco Dancers!\ \ I’m getting back into the swing of fantasy books after a long stint enjoying romance and sci fi. This got me thinking about some of my favourites, and what’s different these days from the books I used to read. One major difference is that I have access to more books with Arabian influence, something I rarely saw on shelves growing up. I was raised on stories like Arabian Nights, Sinbad the Sailor and Ali Baba, but I didn’t see these influences in modern fantasy books (in the UK) until recently.\ \ Here are some books that blend folklore and Arabian influences into fantasy:\ \ From Whole Cloth by Sonia Sulaiman\ \ \ \ I loved this queer, asexual retelling of the Palestinian folktale ‘The Story That Begins and Ends with Lies’. A Prince is told he has to marry, but he only wants to spend his time with a woman who tells stories made up of inly lies. When he meets a woman who seems to be his fated match, they must both discover what they really want, and a way to live in their truth (and lies).\ \ The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chackraborty\ \ \ \ A 40+ year old mother with bad knees gets the band back together for one last adventure, sailing the high seas and encountering pirates, sorcerers and mythical creatures.\ \ This gave me all those wonderous feelings I got from stories like Sinbad as a kid. It’s so fun, it features a queer side character, and so many twists, turns and richly described bustling cities, islands and magical creatures. One of my favourite reads of 2023.\ \ The Ending Fire trilogy by Saara el-Arifi\ \ \ \ Saara el-Arifi is now one of my favourite authors. The first book, The Final Strife, absolutely blew me away. It’s inspired by Arabian and Ghanaian mythology, about a brutal world where the colour of your blood determines your status, and three women of different blood types who seek to bring down the oppressive regime.\ \ It’s fast paced, richly described, and incredibly gripping. And queer!\ \ All the best,\ \ Disco x\ \ Join for free or login

Trigger warnings for discussions of addiction and withdrawal.\ \ Hi there Disco Dancers,\ \ As it’s Disability Pride Month, I’ve been reflecting on conditions that don’t get a huge amount of rep. While addiction isn’t necessarily a disability, it did pop into my mind. I’m 5 years sober and clean, and I love it when I come across books that represent this experience well.\ \ Here are 3 of my faves:\ \ The Final Strife by Saara el-Arifi.\ \ \ \ In this African and Arabian-inspired fantasy, a queer woman from a downtrodden class has trained her whole life to overthrow the ruling, oppressive regime. When the plan sets in motion, however, she finds all is not as she’d been led to believe.\ \ The FMC in this series has an addiction to a kind of seed, and goes through periods of withdrawal and suffers a lot because of it. It was a hard read occasionally, but I felt it was treated sensitively, and she is never magically cured. Even when she is weaned off the drug, she has to put work in to maintain her health. It’s a great aspect to a well rounded character.\ \ Evocation by ST Gibson\ \ \ \ This is a polyamorous occult romance between a sorcerer, a medium and a witch. The medium is a wealthy man in his mid-twenties, a sober alcoholic, who reconnects with his ex-boyfriend, the sorcerer, who knew him when he was drinking. Occasionally they have flashbacks to those times, and we see how it put a strain on their relationship, and the love and support that they show each other through all of it.\ \ I felt it was a good depiction of how sobriety doesn’t magically make the past go away, and how people can grow and heal together.\ \ A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall\ \ \ \ In this historical romance, a trans woman reconnects with her ex best friend who knew her when she presented as a man, and now believes she died in battle. Her best friend is now wounded, depressed, grieving, and struggling with a laudanum addiction.\ \ I’ll admit, this book did take me a while to get into because I thought the initial set up was unfair to the best friend, but I absolutely loved it by the end. And the intersection of addiction, pain management and depression was represented well.\ \ Much love, take care,\ \ Disco x\ \ Upgrade for $5 or login

Intersectional Representation in Books

Do you remember the last book you read that featured multiply marginalized characters?

We talk a lot about prioritizing diversity in the books we read, but intersectional identities are far too often left out of the conversation. I have spoken to far too many authors who have had publishers or agents push back because their character can’t be a person of color AND queer AND disabled (or any other marginalized identity—Jewish/muslim/plus sized, you get the drill). That would just be TOO MUCH for one character.

As if that’s not the actual lived experience of these authors and so many real people.

I wanted to come on here and recommend some books that I love (or in the case of If We Survive This—a book I am highly anticipating) that feature characters of 3+ marginalizations (I specifically went with disabled, BIPOC, & LGBTQ+ for this post), because the more we read and support these books, the more we show publishing that these stories matter.

Hi there party people and disco dancers!\ \ May is almost over, so I wanted to get my Mental Health Awareness recs in before we start focusing on Pride.\ \ I wanted to highlight some books that have really stuck with me in recent years, as great rep for various mental health issues.\ \ Depression :\ \ The Saint of Heartbreak by Morgan Dante\ \ \ \ This is one of the best books I’ve read so far this year! Judas is sent to hell after betraying Jesus and is taken in by Lucifer. As Judas suffers from centuries of guilt and shame, the two slowly fall for each other. It’s tender, gorgeous and gut-wrenching, and I thought the depression was written honestly and beautifully.\ \ Anxiety:\ \ A Little Luck by JA Collignon\ \ \ \ In this sapphic cosy fantasy, a bard with anxiety falls for a retired thief as they plan a village festival together. I particularly loved the fact that the bard’s siblings also suffered from anxiety, and there was a lot of understanding and support.\ \ Addiction:\ \ The Final Strife by Saara el-Arifi\ \ \ \ This is book 1 in an incredible queer fantasy series inspired by African and Arabian mythology, set in a world where the colour of your blood determines your status. The MC has a drug addiction, and struggles throughout the series. I like that there was no magical cure, but the addiction storyline also didn’t get too overly dark. It was treated sensitively and added a lot to the character.\ \ Grief\ \ Where the Rhythm Takes You by Sarah Dass\ \ \ \ This is a wonderful YA Persuasion retelling set in Tobago. A teenage girl mourning the loss of her mother is working in her family resort when her ex comes to stay. The grief isn’t a central theme, but there are some beautiful and very real moments where it crops up almost out of nowhere. There’s also a connection between music and memory that felt very true and tender. \ \ PTSD\ \ Into the Light by Mark Oshiro\ \ \ \ A homeless, drifting queer Latino teenage boy tries to survive on the road, running from his experiences in a scary cult. This is a really emotional book that focuses on the MCs hopes, dreams and ever-constant fears. While the PTSD is not named, there is a mystery that unfolds regarding his past experiences at the cult, and his response to those memories throughout the book are intense, honest and very well written.\ \ OCD\ \ Phantasma by Kaylie Smith\ \ \ \ This is a dark romantasy that I absolutely adored, about a medium with a dark force inside her, who follows her sister into a mysterious demon-filled mansion to take part in deadly magical games. The dark force is a representation of OCD, which the author has. This was my first time reading a fantasy version of this condition and it gave me an insight into how intense and debilitating it can be.\ \ If you have your own fave recs, please do drop them in the comments!\ \ Much love,\ \ Disco\ \ Join for free or login
