Demons clash with inheritance claims as secrets unfold and violence is unleashed over twelve harrowing hours trapped in a house with the worst thing imaginable: family.

When Papi Ramon, the patriarch of the wealthy Abreu family dies, he gives the family one last message in the will: “One of you is el bacà, the demon that I made a deal with. Get rid of them or you will be damned.” Xiomara, the uncontested favorite of Papi Ramon (and therefore the least liked in the family), watches as everyone dismisses this as the joke of a senile old man and demands the lawyer obtain the previous will Papi wrote.

While the lawyer drives back to his office, a storm breaks out, forcing the entire family—Xiomara’s aunts and uncles and cousins—to remain in the house. And the words of Papi’s will hangs over their heads even heavier than the rain clouds.

Over the course of the night, scandal after scandal is revealed to the public about the family. Suddenly a tense few hours of surviving her family turns into a vicious night of recrimination, violence, accusations…and murder.

Xiomara is faced with an impossible task: uproot a demon and somehow kill it or excise the ghosts that linger within her own family.

And the clock is ticking...

[Happy Tuesday, mis internet amigxs!\ \ I hope everyone had a relaxing Decoration, i.e., Memorial Day and that those that had a 3 day weekend truly enjoyed the additional time off.\ \ Before I begin with book club reminders, I have seen the violent footage form Delaney Hall yesterday (tw: police violence), that lead to friends being attacked an a US Senator, Andy Kim, being pepper sprayed for trying to provide oversight of the facility. I feel like I have run out of words to describe the horrors I see everyday in this country, but I will continue to witness and help where I can. Currently, I am trying to find mutual aid to donate to for protestors. I've reached out to friends who were there this weekend and am waiting to hear back from them. If you know of any, please feel free to comment them below so that I can share and amplify.\ \ AUTHOR CHAT \ \ Our author chat with Natalia Hernandez is coming up on Monday, June 1st at 8 PM EST. The private Zoom link to attend is here. The conversation will be recorded for those who miss it. If you are joining, PLEASE REMEMBER TO TURN OFF YOUR CAMERA AND MICROPHONE.\ \ There is still time to read the book! I read it in 2 sittings this weekend. It is a quick and fun cozy romp that I highly recommend. It's on Kindle Unlimited for those with subscriptions.\ \ JUNE BOOK CLUB \ \ I can't believe June is right around the corner. Our fiction read is And I'll Take Out Your Eyes by A. M. Sosa, a debut following a queer Chicano’s cannon-shot into adulthood amidst familial turmoil and the suffocating violence of Stockton, California in the early 2000s.\ \ We're also still reading our May nonfiction pick through the end of June, Accordion Eulogies, a memoir of music, migration and Mexcio that is also a micro-history of the accordion.\ \ July book club polls for both fiction and nonfiction will be up this week!\ \ As we look out for the rest of the year of book club:\ \

Here are some March 10th new book releases on my radar (and should be on yours!). First, the ones I've had a chance to read:\ \ Strange Girls by Sarvat Hasin 4.75/5 stars\ \ Put this on your TBR if you enjoy messy lesbian lit fic with complex characters. This one is high in yearning.\ \ The Complex by Karan Mahajan 4.5/5 stars\ \ Put this on your TBR if you enjoy family drama and political intrigue (in this one, they're one and the same). We know from the start that a tragedy happens...but then go back to the beginning to explain why.\ \ Whidbey by T Kira Madden 4.5/5 stars\ \ Put this on your TBR if you appreciate discussions around who gets to tell a victim's story and the tendency of white women to speak over women of color. This has dark subject matter, but handles it thoughtfully.\ \ Centroeuropa by Sarvat Hasin 3.5/5 stars\ \ Put this on your TBR if you enjoy queer translated fiction with magical realism elements.\ \ And the three I'm still waiting to get my hands on:\ \ All the World Can Hold by Jung Yun\ \ Why it interests me: it brings together people from different backgrounds to explore intriguing themes of needs and wants, regrets, and personal drama. \ \ The Fox and the Devil by Kiersten White\ \ Why it interests me: these words from the blurb: sapphic, vampire hunter, gothic.\ \ You Should Have Been Nicer to my Mom by Vincent Tirado\ \ Why it interests me: a gothic horror book centering an inheritance and a creepy house.

\ \ I'm finally ready to share my pics for my 2025 bookish awards! These are some of the books I was most entertained by last year and I hope y'all will give them a try.\ \ The award for "Book I Couldn't Put Down" goes to You Should Have Been Nicer To My Mom by Vincent Tirado!\ \ \ \ The drama was delicious and I felt so seen by the storytelling. For those who have read my previous reviews, this probably isn't surprising to you!\ \ ......\ \ The award for "Book I'm Still Thinking About" goes to A Tropical Rebel Gets the Duke by Adriana Herrera! \ \ \ \ Some folks may be surprised by the fact that I chose a Romance novel for this award, but IYKYK. This Historical Romance uses the context surrounding our MC's stories in such a powerful way that you might have to sit with yourself for a little while when you finish reading it.\ \ ......\ \ I've got a three-way tie for the "Spiciest Romances" of 2025:\ \ I Accidentally Hooked Up With A Vampire by Jessica Cage, Blood & Brujas by Mikayla D. Hornedo, and All Superheroes Need Photo Ops by Elizabeth Stephens. \ \ \ \ This was a hard decision to make and I almost threw in I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I'm Trapped in a Rom-Com by Kimberly Lemming for good measure. These novels had me speechless (many times)!! If you haven't read anything by these authors (and Kimberly Lemming), I suggest you add their backlogs, babes.\ \ .......\ \ My indecision plagued me for my "Most Fun To Read" books of 2025, too. I ultimately went with A Man for Mrs. Claus by Rebekah Weatherspoon, A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna, and The Princess and The P.I. by Nikki Payne.\ \ \ \ These authors had me kicking my feet, giggling, and getting butterflies all story long! They gave me mystery, yearning, and safe spaces.\ \ .........\ \ Despite that, I have to say that my choice for "Coziest Novel" of the year goes to Only Lovers in the Building by Nadine Gonzalez.\ \ \ \ I'm a sucker for found family, but add in the location, the romance, and the beautiful writing and I'm sold. This Afro-Latina represented us so well!\ \ ......\ \ Last but definitely not least, my award for "Most Surprising Stories" of 2025 goes to:\ \ Blood Slaves by Markus Redmond, When The Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida Kelley, Lucha of the Forgotten Spring by Tehlor Kay Mejia, and Beasts of Carnaval by Rosália Rodrigo.\ \ \ \ These were the stories I didn't know I wanted! They were original, vivid, and kept me hooked. They may not be everyone's cup of tea but they hit just right for me.\ \ ..........\ \ Thank you to all of the authors who worked so hard to write these books and get them out in the world. They've brought readers (and librarians) like me outlets to rage, feel safe, and find ourselves. Keep doing what you're doing because it matters!](https://bookish-afrolatina.binderybooks.com/item/LrOsz1CACPDfE6bhjcc3/)

It’s day 10 of the#LHMBookstaChallenge** and I’m sharing an upcoming release with y’all that I think matches the prompt “¿Que bochinche?” perfectly.** Thank you to the author Vincent Tirado for sending me an advanced reader's copy of their brand new book, You Should Have Been Nicer To My Mom in exchange for an honest review. \ \ This novel encapsulates so much of what it means to be a part of a family that will tear each other apart rather than admit to any wrongdoing. Tirado was very intentional in the way that they depicted this wealthy Dominican-American family.\ \ We enter this story from Xiomara's point-of view. She's heading to her grandfather Papi Ramon's house for the reading of his will by herself because her mother passed away and she wants to shield her father from just how terrible the Abreu family can be. Aside from Xiomara, the family now consists of two uncles, two aunts, and three cousins, all of whom are in attendance. To her surprise, her estranged childhood friend is also there, having spent the years after her mother passed away taking care of Papi Ramon just like her mom before her.\ \ The lawyer reveals that Papi Ramon's will only consists of a message warning his family that a demon is among them and that they must destroy it within the following 12 hours or be damned. The only person who takes this threat seriously is Xiomara.\ \ There were so many times I felt seen in this book because Tirado captured the essence of the types of people who seem to be a part of almost every Dominican family! We've got...\ \ • a couple of hypocritical, misogynist, and self-important Christians\ \ • a vain serial romantic\ \ • a jealous gossip\ \ • a lame duck who seems a bit off\ \ • a status-obsessed playboy\ \ • an aloof yet insecure cousin\ \ • and the one who means well\ \ I really appreciate Tirado for calling out anti-Haitian prejudice amongst Dominicans, as well. We come from the same island and yet Dominicans and fellow Dominican-Americans blame so much on Haitians. This book was a powerful push to look at ourselves in the mirror, see the way hatred tears us all apart, and do better.\ \ I recommend You Should Have Been Nicer To My Mom to anyone who loves gothic horrors, is interested in social commentary, and/or feels pulled to it after reading this review!\ \ This book is set to be released in March 2026.
