From a PEN/Bellwether Prizewinner, a "beautifully convincing slice of history" novel about the Black Panther Party, perfect for fans of The Love Songs of W. E. B. Dubois (Barbara Kingsolver).

Nettie Boileau joins the Black Panthers’ Free Health Clinics in Oakland in 1968 and is soon swept up in an all-consuming love affair with Melvin Mosley, a defense captain of the Black Panther Party. When Nettie and Melvin head to Chicago to help launch the Illinois chapter of the Panthers, they find themselves targets of J. Edgar Hoover’s famous covert campaigns against civil rights leaders.

As she learns more about the inner workings of the Panthers, Nettie discovers that fighting for social justice may not always mean equal justice for women. Fabienne Josaphat’s Kingdom of No Tomorrow is a timely story of self-determination and revolution amid injustice.

We NEED to talk about the Hot Girls Read situation

As someone with a master’s in postcolonial literature, I can confirm that this is some colonizer 💩

I usually watch book drama from afar but this is one that truly baffles me. Some of my favorite takes so far have come from @tomesandtextiles @fromthemixedupdesk and @mrs.yang_reads but just know I’m engaging with every picture, video, and think piece that crosses my feed. And yes, she’s blocked

Happy Haitian Flag Day 🇭🇹

Happy Haitian Flag Day 🇭🇹

If you’re Haitian and understand Creole, you know that the lyrics to this song are pretty sad but that doesn’t keep us from dancing as close as possible when this comes on at the fèt 👀

Haitian Flag Day also marks the start of our annual tradition: @the_haitian_readathon with my wonderful fellow Haitian cohosts @bestiebethsy, @chptrshakedown, @bookin.good, @bookishgirlmagic, @mer.ce.des_g

This year we’re reading Devil of the Deep by @falenciatheestoryteller and I can’t wait to talk about it with all of you on June 1st (the start of Caribbean Heritage Month) 🇭🇹

Poll:\ \ What would you like to read for August? \ \ Hey y'all!\ \ We're a little more than halfway through July but if you're like me, you're probably just starting Kingdom of No Tomorrow now to keep it fresh for our upcoming discussion. We'll have a discussion on Discord on July 31st in a voice and text channel dedicated to it, so make sure to join the Discord if you haven't yet: https://discord.gg/HXRPwWmmpF\ \ If you're more hesistant toward discord (I know what it's like having to download ANOTHER app) there will also be a post here on Bindery where you can share your thoughts in the comments at any point. \ \ August is back to school season across the U.S. so if you're a student, educator (like me), parent, or otherwise involved in some way, this tends to be a super busy time of year. As a result, I've chosen shorter books that are easy to get through for our August book club choices.\ \ Check out the tagged books for full descriptions.\ \ Please vote by next Friday the 22nd to make sure it's counted.\ \ XoXo - Rae

Hey y'all!\ \ After tallying the votes, July's book club pick was chosen and it will be Kingdom of No Tomorrow by Fabienne Josaphat! Fabienne was born in Haiti and moved to the U. S. as a teenager. Kingdom of No Tomorrow is her second novel, a historical fiction about a Haitian woman who migrates to the U. S. during the Duvalier dictatorship of the 1960s and ends up joining the Black Panthers in California.\ \ Fun fact: I actually know Fabienne personally (the South Florida Haitian community is super connected) so I'll ask her if she's open to questions from book club members. \ \ I'm so excited to read this along with you all and I'm working on getting a Discord set up for us to chat about it. My copy is still in the mail so once it comes in, I'll put out an optional reading pace guide. \ \ XoXo - Rae
