From the international bestselling author of You Had Me at Hola and A Lot Like Adiós comes a steamy love story of a divorced schoolteacher who discovers that her perfect no-strings fling is anything but…

No strings

After Ava Rodriguez’s now-ex-husband declares he wants to “follow his dreams”—which no longer include her—she’s left questioning everything she thought she wanted. So when a handsome hotelier flirts with her, Ava vows to stop overthinking and embrace the opportunity for an epic one-night-stand complete with a penthouse suite, rooftop pool, and buckets of champagne.

No feelings

Roman Vasquez’s sole focus is the empire he built from the ground up. He lives and dies by his schedule, but the gorgeous stranger grimacing into her cocktail glass inspires him to change his plans for the evening. At first, it’s easy for Roman to agree to Ava’s rules: no strings, no feelings. But one night isn’t enough, and the more they meet, the more he wants.

No falling in love

Roman is the perfect fling, until Ava sees him at her cousin’s engagement party—as the groom’s best man, no less! Suddenly, maintaining her boundaries becomes a lot more complicated as she tries to hide the truth of their relationship from her family. However, Roman isn’t content being her dirty little secret, and he doesn’t just want more, he wants everything. With her future uncertain and her family pressuring her from all sides, Ava will have to decide if love is worth the risk—again.

This emotional rollercoaster ride of a novel will have you laughing and crying and believing in happily-ever-afters!

Day 4 LHM Challenge: A Latine book that features family drama Along Came Amor by Alexis Daria \ \ The story begins with an English teacher named Ava Rodriguez whose divorce was just finalized a year after her ex abruptly left her. She gets this news while at a teaching conference and decides to celebrate “New Ava” with a drink from the bar. This version of her is much more daring so when a hot guy named Roman sits down beside her and seems to be flirting, Ava is down for a casual fling. The problem is, one night isn’t enough.\ \ The two bump into each other again at her cousin’s engagement party (he’s the best man!) and the chemistry is undeniable but Ava feels like she needs to hide it from her judgy Puerto Rican family. She’s always felt the pressure to be perfect and it builds up more with her role as maid of honor. Roman is the only person she feels she can be messy with so she doesn’t want to ruin anything by telling her family and friends (not even the Primas of Power).\ \ To add to that drama, many of the people in Ava’s family believe that she is to blame for her divorce. They always have something to say, whether they’re talking to her or gossiping about her with each other, but if she confronts them about it they will say that she’s too sensitive and they were just joking around.\ \ I read & reviewed this book in May and I still feel like it describes my maternal family’s dynamics incredibly well! I’m sure there are many Latinas who would agree that our men get away with a lot because our families place most of the responsibilities on the girls and women. “What did you do to make him leave you?” It’s a harm that is perpetuated by everyone, especially the mothers, grandmothers, and aunts. That internalized misogyny is intense and I was so relieved to see the author depict the truth of it in her book.\ \ I can’t recommend it enough!

\ \ If you've been wondering where I've been, my usual response is: reading, working, worrying, writing, gaming, and probably watching tv. This time, there's a twist: I went to a Pride festival for the very first time. You might even say it was "Baby's First Pride!" I had a great time and felt super affirmed in that space so I will be going to one more Pride event this weekend to acquire more good vibes.\ \ \ \ Of course, I've also been reading books on my tbr (physical & virtual). Aren't y'all proud?! Earlier this month, inspiration struck and I finally finished a chapter of the murder mystery book I'm working on where the Abuela solves crimes. I plotted out 25 chapters and also fleshed out the characters more, which felt amazing!\ \ \ \ Despite all of this, my mind has still been on Palestine and the rest of the train wreck that has been playing out in US news like the ICE raids, offenses against libraries, protests, and more. If you are able, please donate to this campaign: https://gofund.me/aefe13af\\ \ \ \ Speaking of train wrecks, I've also been watching Love Island USA because sometimes you need to escape into someone else's drama for a minute. Invasion and Apothecary Diaries have also been great distractions.\ \ \ \ My favorite updates have been these awesome ARCs and Pre-Orders that arrived over the past few weeks. I pre-ordered were:\ \

My May Reading Wrap-Up is overdue!

My May Reading Wrap-Up is overdue! I read 10 books last month & here are my thoughts:

Destiny’s Captive by Beverly Jenkins I was fascinated by the last book in the Destiny series! Years after he was Shanghaied* off the coast of California, he is the captain of his own ship (named for his mother Alanza). As a pirate working to liberate Cuba, Pilar chooses the Alanza as her crew’s next target. I had never really learned about these experiences before, so it was awesome that one of my favorite authors introduced it to me in this book. Their chemistry is hot, of course, but the characters and their backstories are what kept me locked in. *Being Shanghaied meant that a person was put aboard a ship by force often with the help of liquor or a drug to work as sailors.

Love and Sportsball by Meka James This is a sweet & spicy romance inspired by the Black American classic, Love and Basketball. I enjoyed the chemistry the leads had w/ each other & the emphasis on clear communication. It was a fun book but the pacing dragged a bit. Folks who enjoy basketball & sapphic romances would love this one, I think!

School for Extraterrestrial Girls #2: Girls In Flight by Jeremy Whitley & Illustrated by Jamie Noguchi The School for Extraterrestrial Girls series is such a fun read for sci-fi fans who like imaging different alien races. Girls in Flight is the second graphic novel and it transports us to the School for Extraterrestrial Boys with Tara, Misako, Summer, and Kat, since their school was compromised in book 1. I love that there are multiple POVs and that we get to know each of the main characters much more. The illustrations are also fantastic! If you love queer sci-fi and graphic novels, definitely give this series a go.

Zeal by Morgan Jerkins At its core, this is a multi-generation story about love. Ardelia & Oliver get engaged in 2019 but struggle to hold onto one another as the stress of wedding planning AND Oliver's work at the hospital becomes overwhelming as the pandemic explodes in the US... Book Review: Along Came Amor by Alexis Daria

Along Came Amor (Primas of Power #3) by Alexis Daria is here!! Check out my review to see if this is the right book for you.

I’ve never read a book that described my maternal family’s dynamics so well! The judgmental matriarch, gossiping, misogyny, loyalty, controlling behavior over decision-making, “playful teasing,” the expectations, and pressure to be perfect. I even saw a tía (Titi Val) similar to mine (Tati aka Batata) who acts as the trusted barrier between her niece & their family’s judgments.

It’s hard to escape the feelings of shame and loneliness that stems from this inter-generational trauma because of how normalized it is! Like Ava, I spent a lot of my life doing what my family told me was best, but when I really got to know myself outside of our home and held my own, they didn’t respond well.

Despite all of this, we still love each other. It’s just complicated! Thank you, @alexisdaria for capturing this experience authentically!

Ava and Roman’s love story is complicated and deep but it is also sexy as hell!! Their personalities compliment each other well and sometimes their issues mirror the others. I.e. Their tendency to give more of themselves to others regardless of their own needs.

So if you want to read a book with fantastic family drama, a perfectionist who gets messy, & a workaholic who wants to pamper his loved ones, you need to get your hands on this book!

Thank you @harperaudio for a copy of this audiobook in return for an honest review!
