An R&B singer and a corporate executive find love that hits the right notes in this romance by Kristina Forest, USA Today bestselling author of The Partner Plot.

Iris Greene used to be a woman with a plan. But all of that changed after she met the love of her life at twenty-five, got pregnant and married…and then became a widow and a single mother all in a little over two years. Now, after years of hustling, Iris is the director of partnerships at a beauty company and raising sweet six-year-old Calla by herself. Despite her busy life, she still can’t help but feel lonely. She just needs to catch her breath—and one night, at her sister’s wedding, when she steps outside to do just that, she sees a certain singer who takes her breath away.

By all accounts, pop R&B singer Angel Hughes has it made. He’s a successful musician and has just scored a brand ambassador deal with an emerging beauty company. But he’s still not fulfilled; he’s not producing songs he’s passionate about, and there’s a gaping hole in his love life. When he visits the Save Face Beauty office to kickstart his campaign, he’s delighted to see Iris, his stylist’s sister—the beautiful woman he’s secretly had a crush on for years.

Despite their obvious attraction to each other, they must stay professional throughout the campaign tour—a goal that doesn’t quite pan out. But when it becomes clear their lives aren’t in sync, can they fall back in step to the same rhythm and beat?

“Kristina Forest’s Green Sisters series blends swoonworthy romantic moments with a healthy dose of sisterly bonding and a dash of glitz and glamor. Each book is a well-rounded treat.” —Alexis Daria, bestselling author of You Had Me at Hola

[Poll:\ \ Do you like to write?\ \ I’ve been a writer since before I could string together sentences. I’d heard good things about Romancing The Craft, so when I found out a day long workshop was happening near me, I hopped on it. An amazing caliber of authors filled the various panels of the day and it seemed like a great opportunity to connect with fellow writers.\ \ What is Romancing The Craft? \ \

Romancing the Craft is a one-day conference aimed toward marginalized unpublished and published romance authors which offers them programing to develop their craft, to learn from masters of the genre, and advance their careers through valuable networking opportunities with peers and other industry professionals.\ \ On May 3, I drove to the Rutgers Academic Building in New Jersey. The event started with an opening keynote between Mia Sosa and Sarah Younger. They told the story of how they came to the industry and how they became an author/agent duo. From there, Adriana Herrera and Sarah MacLean gave a masterclass about writing a romance novel. I love hearing authors speak about the way they approach stories. After that, there was a panel that spoke about the future of romance.\ \ \ \ I can’t say enough good things about this day-long workshop. When signing up, attendees had a two sections of workshops that had two choices. I went to the Writing A Character They’ll Root For with Alisha Rai and Refreshing the Classics: Romantic Retellings with Nikki Payne. People have been retelling stories for hundreds if not thousands of years, so hearing how Niki Payne broke down her method helped me brainstorm future stories on my very long roster of things I’d like to write.\ \ \ \ Romancing the Craft was a fantastic way to hear about craft and connect with authors and writers. If you are a marginalized writer and are about to attend a workshop I highly recommend it.\ \

February Mini Book Reviews: Part 3 ~ Black Romance

February Mini Book Reviews: Part 3 Y'all know I had to indulge in some romance in February, so I dove into the Greene Sister Series by Kristina Forest!

The Neighbor Favor is a slow-burn, sweet book w/depth! I love that Nick is a travel writer at the start of the story because it was cool to have a character who loves getting to know people around the world. I felt for him but definitely related to Lily as an ambivert book lover. Lily & Nick had an immediate connection which flowed into a lot of pining. A lot of the book was pining so if you love that, this is for you. I love that the author didn’t end this story with romance. She makes sure to bring Lily and Nick resolutions in their own lives, too.

The Partner Plot Just when I thought I knew what was gonna happen next, Kristina Forest swerved! I love that for us. Violet & Xavier are cute & annoying together. I love that the story starts w/their High School romance because it really gives us a chance to see just how much they’ve matured in their 20s. This book also adds more beyond the romance aspect through the couple’s experience back in their hometown. Their community and friends are a bigger part of their lives than they were in the first book. I really enjoyed this story & the audiobook narrators did a fantastic job.

The Love Lyric This might be my favorite book of the series! Iris is a classic eldest daughter; She’s always fixing things, putting on a brave face, & sacrificing her needs for others. I related with her a lot & I’m sure many of y’all will, too. I’ll admit, I was a bit skeptical of Angel in book 2 but when I started reading his perspective in this book, I felt like he was a genuinely good & sweet guy. Since he’s a musician in the public eye, they have a few similarities with Violet & Xavier’s story. I felt protective of Iris, especially since she’s a mom of a young girl, but the author gave her a beautiful arc!

Bookish AfroLatina's February Reading Wrap-Up

It's time for my February Reading Wrap-Up!

As I explained in my January Reading Wrap-Up, I'm going to be sharing book reviews in individual or group posts throughout the month so they each get the spotlight they deserve.

I read 9 books in February, which was surprising to me because I was going through A LOT (and still am, tbh). I read all of these as audiobooks but ended up going back & forth between the audio & print editions for a couple of them.

Here is what I read:

🎭 Bemused by Farrah Rochon ✊🏾 Freedom is a Constant Struggle by Angela Y. Davis 🏃🏿 James by Percival Everett 💍 The Broposal by Sonora Reyes 🌄 The Color of a Lie by Kim Johnson ✍🏾 The Neighbor Favor by Kristina Forest 👠 The Partner Plot by Kristina Forest 🎤 The Love Lyric by Kristina Forest 🌌 The Scourge Between the Stars by Ness Brown

As always, please read the content warnings for each of these books on Storygraph!!

What did you read in February?

Poll:\ \ Our first Fable Read\ \ Hello my dearies and froomies! I hope the holiday season is treating you well! I know I have been a busy Bri bee for the past week and a half doing nothing but prepping for the holidays and writing my book. (I am PSYCHED at how it's turning out!!!!!).\ \ Today is my birthday, woot woot, and my gift to myself is, of course, a new book! It was my pre-order of A Sky of Emerald stars so, that was going to be my gift anyway!!! As I am turning 31, I am about 2 years shy of becoming old enough to adventure in Hobbit years, and so, I shall turn to the journey within the pages of the books! This brings me right to the poll that I will be posting here for our official first book group read of 2025! EEEE, I am excited! If you aren't in the fable book group, worry not, I have it linked on my page but it is also here: https://fable.co/club/bris-book-nook-with-brilefae-208916072142?invite=be4bccb1-3f57-4574-bf60-10c2c7f93ec8\ \ Book plans for today, potentially and hopefully starting a few arcs that I recieved. My poor Netgalley score is judging me and I am just covering my ears... la la la. But I was able to get The Love Lyric by Kristina Forest and I am REALLY excited to start that!\ \ I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, a lovely rest of the holidays, and I cannot wait to read with you!!!!
