“Her best work yet... about fame and family, culture and change, the power of story, the writer’s life... and robots. This one has it all.” — George R.R. Martin
In this exhilarating tale by New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor, a disabled Nigerian American woman pens a wildly successful Sci-Fi novel, but as her fame rises, she loses control of the narrative—a surprisingly cutting, yet heartfelt drama about art and love, identity and connection, and, ultimately, what makes us human. This is a story unlike anything you’ve read before.
The future of storytelling is here. Disabled, disinclined to marry, and more interested in writing than a lucrative career in medicine or law, Zelu has always felt like the outcast of her large Nigerian family. Then her life is upended when, in the middle of her sister’s lavish Caribbean wedding, she’s unceremoniously fired from her university job and, to add insult to injury, her novel is rejected by yet another publisher. With her career and dreams crushed in one fell swoop, she decides to write something just for herself. What comes out is nothing like the quiet, literary novels that have so far peppered her unremarkable career. It’s a far-future epic where androids and AI wage war in the grown-over ruins of human civilization. She calls it Rusted Robots.
When Zelu finds the courage to share her strange novel, she does not realize she is about to embark on a life-altering journey—one that will catapult her into literary stardom, but also perhaps obliterate everything her book was meant to be. From Chicago to Lagos to the far reaches of space, Zelu’s novel will change the future not only for humanity, but for the robots who come next.
A book-within-a-book that blends the line between writing and being written, Death of the Author is a masterpiece of metafiction that manages to combine the razor-sharp commentary of Yellowface with the heartfelt humanity of Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Surprisingly funny, deeply poignant, and endlessly discussable, this is at once the tale of a woman on the margins risking everything to be heard and a testament to the power of storytelling to shape the world as we know it.

Some books I’ve read in the last couple years that I rated 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 stars!
It was SO hard to narrow down the 5 stars because there were sooooo many incredible books I wanted to include but I kept it to six—just know that it pained me greatly to do so.

Let's talk books, crochets, and hobbies!
How was your Q2?
I’ve finally gotten out of my reading slump and it’s been wonderful being able to enjoy books again. I’ve been in a crochet frenzy lately and that’s been so much fun. I don’t have any pictures but I’ve also been taking Spanish classes again and going to language exchange meet ups to practice 😁
@booknetfest was definitely one of the biggest highlights of these last three months and I’m counting down the days till next year 🫶🏾
The World Cup has taken up so much of my summer and these Panini stickers may cause my financial ruin if I can’t get an exchange going soon 🥲

[Now that I'm doing weekly reading roundups on Mondays, it doesn't really make sense to do a fave of the week on Fridays. I don't know exactly what I'm gonna do yet (I KNOW it doesn't have to be the same every week. But my brain does not! It likes routines!), but today I've got my June wrap up and a look forward at some books I hope to pick up in July. (Books marked with a * were gifted to me and books marked with a ^ I was paid to read.)\ \ For June reads, it's no surprise that all my faves (starred) were books I read for Pride Reading Bingo. Queer books forever!\ \ \ \ THE QUARTER QUEEN^\ \ WHY ARE PEOPLE INTO THAT?\ \ LONDON FALLING*\ \ ⭐️ SEVEN DEVILS\ \ ESCALA'S WISH^\ \ ⭐️ THE MAIDENHEADS*\ \ DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL (reread)\ \ ⭐️ SEASONS OF GLASS AND IRON*\ \ DIVERGENT (reread)\ \ POOL HOUSE*\ \ LOVE IS AN EX-COUNTRY\ \ RAISING ARTEMIS^\ \ THE FOREST ON THE EDGE OF TIME*\ \ ⭐ ONE OF THE BOYS*\ \ DEATH OF THE AUTHOR*\ \ ⭐ SHAPES OF LOVE*\ \
- *\ \ Here's what's on deck for July. (Ish...you know how that mood reading life goes.)\ \ \ \ MOSS'D IN SPACE* - This is the July Found Family Book Club pick!\ \ CHAOS* - This space romance series is a fave of mine and I've been saving this latest installment for when I needed a treat.\ \ MAKE ME BETTER* - Gailey is a fave author and normally I would have gobbled this up by now but for some reason I thought it was a fall release and therefore I didn't prioritize the ARC. Whoops!\ \ BLACK SALT QUEEN* - I've been meaning to read this fantasy about royalty, romance, and betrayal for awhile and the sequel recently came out so I better get to it!\ \ I LOVE YOU DON'T DIE* - I'd intended to read this for Pride Bingo and didn't get there. I adored Song's debut CHLORINE and am looking forward to more of that.\ \ THIS PRINCESS KILLS MONSTERS* - Another Pride Bingo fail. I've been very into cozy, comedic fantasy lately so I'm ready to wrap myself up in this one.\ \ OUT OF STEP, INTO YOU* - The last of my Pride Bingo intendeds. I thought Burch's debut YA novel a few years ago was seriously underrated, so watch out for me yelling about this one soon.\ \ Books I'm carrying over from June: My current reads are Love In A F-cked Up World by Dean Spade and Coldwire* by Chloe Gong.\ \ Other miscellaneous July reads: I run an in-person book club that reads spicy books and I our July pick is The Pairing by Casey McQuiston, which will be a reread for me. I also read the first chapter of Murder In The Dressing Room* by Holly Star yesterday. There will be other audiobooks because I can't commute without them, but I haven't picked any yet.\ \ Is that a packed enough TBR for you or what!\ \ Join for free or login](https://caseythereader.binderybooks.com/item/RjgobKuiwId4ySBsPVwi/)

\ \ Week 6: 2-8th of February\ \ I will give you the warning now! BEWARE OF TYPOS! I'm a reader who reads a lot but still can't spell properly.\ \ \ \ This week’s reading has been pretty solid I would like to say! I started of the week by finishing my first book of the month which was:\ \ "Death of the author" by Nnedi Okorafor.\ \ You know when you finish a book and you feel certain emotions about the book buthave no words to describe it. That was me when I finished...\ \ I just remember finishing the book, feeling very happy that I had read it and in a way I felt enlightened and that my horizon was expanded!\ \ The book explored three different genres at the same time which was wild! We got a literary fiction section, sci-fi-dystopian section and interview memoir style sections.\ \ What enlightened me was reading about Nigerian-American experiences, reading the POV of a paraplegic character and peoples relationship with technology and it’s development.\ \ I am finishing this week by starting my second book of this month which is\ \ “The everlasting” by Alix E. Harrow\ \ \ \ OOOFFF, THIS BOOK!! It’s truly something else. I’m only 100 pages in , and this just screams NEXT LEVEL ROMANTASY. The writing is really whimsical and descriptive!\ \ I’m immersive reading this one with the audiobook, AND THE AUDOBOOK IS PERFECTION!!! \ \ PSSST! There will be a reading vlog of my “The Everlasting” journey! So Stay Tuned!\ \ Alright, that’s all I have for now....My dinner has gotten cold... I thought I could write this and eat at the same time, but nope! Can’t multitask at all XD\ \ Stay AWESOME! XOXO](https://littrillyliterature.binderybooks.com/item/Dl1FtvHb6HFNbpxoIQ6f/)

\ \ Whenever I'm feeling hopeless, I try to to find something to look forward to like a get together with my friends or a new book. Since my friends and I haven't been able to hangout consistently for a bit, I've been leaning more into purchasing books from bookshops like SteamyLit and websites like Bookshop.org and Thriftbooks. I also won a giveaway! Here are the books I got recently:\ \ Be a Revolution: How Everyday People Are Fighting Oppression and Changing the World—and How You Can, Too by Ijeoma Oluo \ \ This title is self-explanatory. My hope is that this will give me strength. Oluo is also great writer and storyteller! I enjoyed her other books So You Want To Talk About Race and Mediocre, so I'm sure I'll love this one.\ \ Star Child: A Biographical Constellation of Octavia Estelle Butler by Ibi Zoboi \ \ As a lover of all things Octavia E. Butler, this purchase was a no-brainer! Ibi Zoboi weaves poetry, short essays, and primary sources in this small package. I'll likely be reading this book before the end of March.\ \ I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I'm Trapped in a Rom-Com by Kimberly Lemming \ \ I have read and love just about every book by Kimberly Lemming! In fact, I read the arc for this once back in January and have been singing its praises ever since. When I finally had a little cash to spend, I knew I wanted my own copy of this hilariously ridiculous and hot story.\ \ We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance by Kellie Carter Jackson \ \ Last month, I attended a Black History event where Kellie spoke about her book and historical heroes which spurred me to purchase her book. As with Oluo's book, I'm hoping this will give me strength and maybe help me work through my own anxieties about our time.\ \ Destiny's Embrace by Beverly Jenkins \ \ Whenever I'm looking for Black joy, I find Beverly Jenkins's books especially suited to my needs. As I Black Latina, I'm often seen as "resilient" and "strong," which can get tiring when all I want is to be given grace and comfort. So here's to self-care!\ \ Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor \ \ I've been hearing a lot of great things about this book! Okorafor's website describes it as "a book-within-a-book that blends the line between writing and being written, Death of the Author is a masterpiece of metafiction." All of that sounds intriguing as hell to me!\ \ Blood & Brujas by Mikayla D. Hornedo \ \ My girl, Carla (@carla_is_reading) has been raving about this book and when I saw the special edition pop up on SteamyLit's website, I was sold. From what I've learned, this is a sapphic fantasy packed with brujas (of course), vampires, and intrigue. Yes, please!\ \ We Belong: an All-Black/All-Queer Sci-fi/Fantasy Comics Anthology edited by William O. Tyler and Viktor T. Kerney \ \ Once again, I was influenced! Fareeha of @fairlyoddfareeha recommended this book on her YouTube shorts dedicated to Black Queer Comics and I knew I had to check it out. Follow her on Bindery here: https://fairlyqueer.binderybooks.com/about/\\ \ Purchase here: https://stackeddeckpress.com/product/we-belong-the-all-black-all-lgbtq-sci-fi-and-fantasy-comics-anthology/\\ \ Black Apocalypse: Afrofuturism at The End of the World by Tavia Nyong'o \ \ I'll be honest, I don't fully remember how I stumbled upon this book. The title grabbed my attention and so did this description: " Juxtaposing the world-building of afrofuturism and the world-negating of afropessimism to show how both movements have offered us critical resources of hope." Since I've been struggling with pushing myself out of the pessimism that's been sticking to me since last fall, I feel like this might bring me out.\ \ Las Leonas Series by Adriana Herrera \ \ I won this gorgeous set of books in a giveaway and I'm in love. Adriana is one of my favorite authors of all time and this series solidified that for me. It's wonderful to have the full set of the new covers since my copies of the first two books don't match. She also sent me the original art for each of the covers, which was so damn sweet of her!!\ \ I'm extremely grateful to have been able to purchase and/or receive these books. I feel a sense of pride having them and know that they will all bring me wisdom.\ \ Join for free or login](https://bookish-afrolatina.binderybooks.com/item/v3vfaU9H7SymEs0CuQm3/)

[Shit got weird this week... like really weird.\ \ This Week in the Book World: \ \ RIP Booktok. I was hoping you and I would get to know one another a bit better this year, but looks like fate had different ideas for us. Seriously though, the last 24 hours have been a propaganda fueled nightmare and I would like to wake up.\ \ Neil Gaiman. What is that quote about living long enough to see your heros become villains? Well that one hit real hard this week. I read half of the Vulture article, immediately wanted to throw up, and then mourned for several days. Please, please take care of yourself if you decide to read this article.\ **Onyx Storm. **I'm going to say it. Some of y'all need to chill the f*ck out. It's literally a book. If you go into a target and swap the dust jacket on a book, that's theft. If you're digging through boxes that are unopened on the floor and causing a headache for underpaid retail workers, you're the asshole. If you're complaining about how a small business (who probably got their books on Friday) can't compete with one of the largest supply chains in the world, you're buying local for a pat on the back, not because you actually want to support local. I know someone is going to be a jerk to me this week about their book and I am going to lose it.\ \ Also, low key am glad that B&N finally got fined for breaking the rules, which they've been doing for YEARS.\ \ Also, also, people started preordering this book in like March, so watch me cackling at these videos of people crying about how they can't get a deluxe edition now. Like, friends... really?\ \ This week's publishing news: \ \ So many great gothic books announced this week! Here are some favs:\ \
- Necrogenesis by Ashia Monet's which is a dark academia gothic fantasy about a true crime fan who "resurrects a victim of a massacre to uncover what claimed the lives of six necromancy students at a secluded manor in the '70s"\
- Bloody Mother by Kim Bohyun (translated by Archana Madhavan) about a mother-turned-vampire "fated to a lifetime of man-killing time-travel to avenge her daughter's brutal death"\
- A Practical Guide to Dating a Demon by Hannah Reynolds's which was pitched as a " YA cozy romantasy" where a magic academy student tells suitors by telling she's engaged to a demon "only to return home and find a demon waiting for her, insisting she honor the engagement"\
- Two books from Kawai Strong Washburn's (Sharks in the Time of Saviors)–The Names of the New World, a literary ecothriller in 4 acts; and The Horizon Thief, a "Polynesian retelling of Lord of the Flies"\
- The Halls of the Dead by S.M. Hallow, described as "a queer, gothic romance set in Victorian London, in which a woman who has dedicated her life to protecting the necromantic secrets held in sentient grimoires bound with human skin" resurrects her murdered partner\ \ This week's new releases:\ \
- Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao (Adult, fantasy)\
- Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor (Adult, sci-fi)\
- The In-Between Bookstore by Edward Underhill (Adult, fiction)\ \ What I read this week: \ \ Elatsoe (78%)\ \ This has been such a fun middle-grade/teen read. I'm almost finished with the audiobook and I have LOVED the asexaual representation in this one. This one is fully focused on family and friendship, which has been so refreshing. I can't wait to finish it.\ \ Fagin the Thief (62%)\ \ I had to pause on this one this week to read my Underbrush fantasy book club pick–The Will of the Many.\ \ The Will of the Many (31%)\ \ Not going to lie, I was super intimidated by this one, but was up for the challenge when we chose it as our book club pick. I am thrilled to say that this one is actually super easy to get into. I started this one on a 7:30am flight and was almost immediately invested, which is saying a lot because I am NOT a morning person. I need to get to the halfway point of this one before meeting tomorrow, so excuse me while I read this for the rest of the evening.\ \ What I bought/shelved \ \ I've already posted two posts about new books in my collections, so I won't bore you with those again. If you're interested you can see my Indianapolis book haul here and my extremely exciting publisher book mail here.\ \ Other musings: \ \ Honestly, I'm tired. Like really tired. So, I don't really have any other thoughts. I'm sending all of you all so much love as we head into tomorrow. It's going to be an emotional rollercoaster, but we will get through it.\ \ See you on the other side. Take care of yourselves.](https://notsowellread.binderybooks.com/item/LrnHi4hmhZo6hZ3XVBb2/)
