> “Absolutely charming... a flawless balance of humor, heat, sweetness, and depth, and I loved every page.” – Helen Hoang, USA Today bestselling author of _The Bride Test_

A witty, hilarious romantic comedy about a woman who’s tired of being “boring” and recruits her mysterious, sexy neighbor to help her experience new things—perfect for fans of Sally Thorne, Jasmine Guillory, and Helen Hoang!

Chloe Brown is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almost—but not quite—dying, she’s come up with seven directives to help her “Get a Life”, and she’s already completed the first: finally moving out of her glamorous family’s mansion. The next items?

Enjoy a drunken night out.

Ride a motorcycle.

Go camping.

Have meaningless but thoroughly enjoyable sex.

Travel the world with nothing but hand luggage.

And... do something bad.

But it’s not easy being bad, even when you’ve written step-by-step guidelines on how to do it correctly. What Chloe needs is a teacher, and she knows just the man for the job.

Redford ‘Red’ Morgan is a handyman with tattoos, a motorcycle, and more sex appeal than ten-thousand Hollywood heartthrobs. He’s also an artist who paints at night and hides his work in the light of day, which Chloe knows because she spies on him occasionally. Just the teeniest, tiniest bit.

But when she enlists Red in her mission to rebel, she learns things about him that no spy session could teach her. Like why he clearly resents Chloe’s wealthy background. And why he never shows his art to anyone. And what really lies beneath his rough exterior…

How Similar Is Our Taste in Books?
+10 points if you’ve read it
+5 points if it’s on your TBR
500 possible points (including Finding Gene Kelly 😉)

This is DEFINITELY a non-exhaustive list—there were so many I had to cut out because I didn’t want it to be 500 slides long. But I feel like this is a decent grasp of my tastes?

I’ve absolutely been loving this trend and I had to participate, even if I’m a little bit late to the game (as usual lol)

As a survivor of intimate partner violence, I love to read romance novels about survivors finding love and safety as they recover from abuse. While their lives are not defined by past trauma, their trauma does inform how they experience intimacy, trust and pleasure. Romance novels that show compassion for survivors and depict them as heroes and heroines taking charge of their lives do important work to de-stigmatize conversations about domestic violence. Through storytelling, they put a human face on the psychological process of recovery and healing, as well as what toxic and dangerous relationships can look like.\\
\\
Romance genre conventions promise readers that no matter the dark subject matter explored — and no matter the pain the characters endure — everything will be okay. These books send a powerful message that no one deserves to be abused, and that survivors of abuse deserve happy endings with respectful, empathetic, and swoon-worthy partners.\\
\\
****_No Ordinary Love_ by Myah Ariel**** \\
\\
Pop superstar Ella Simone is in the middle of a contentious legal battle with her unfaithful and emotionally abusive husband. The last thing she needs is bad press, but after a wardrobe malfunction at an awards show, she and baseball player Miles Westbrook make headlines with their scorching chemistry. This a beautiful celebrity romance about the many forms abuse can take, and learning to open yourself up to love again after having your trust broken.\\
\\
I had the opportunity to interview Myah Ariel about the book on my podcast, Rebel Ever After. She said, “When you're in a relationship, you might think, ‘I'm not being hit, I'm not being pushed, so this isn’t abuse.’ But I think it's important to realize that abuse has levels, it has shades, it has colors, and it comes in many of them. Just because you've not been bruised or battered does not mean that you haven't been abused.”\\
\[Content warning: Ella's abuser is a character on-page and litigation abuse is continuous.\]\\
\\
****_Love and Other Conspiracies_ by Mallory Marlowe**** \\
\\
Hallie Barrett is still reeling from her breakup with an abusive coworker at a Buzzfeed-like media company when she's tasked with producing a viral new web series. She teams up with cryptid expert Hayden Hargrove to host a show about the unexplained, and sparks fly as they investigate the Moth Man, Area 51 and other classic conspiracy theories. But will their show perform better than her narcissistic ex's?\\
\\
Mallory Marlowe and I talked about abusive workplaces and where she found inspiration for Hallie's growth on Rebel Ever After. She said, "I wanted to take those feelings that I had on my own journey of rediscovering my worth and rediscovering that I was smart, that I was valuable, that I should have been a valued team member. I'm a valued person. You don't realize how deep it gets into your psyche until you're taking a step back and starting to heal. I wanted to channel a lot of that pain that I felt into healing for Hallie."\\
\[Content warning: Hallie's abuser is a character on-page and continues to emotionally abuse her at work and online.\]\\
\\
****_Pas de Don't_ by Chloe Angyal**** \\
\\
Ballet dancer Heather Hayes is at the peak of her career when she learns her fiancé Jack has been cheating on her with another woman in the company. To get away from him, she moves across the world to dance with the Australian National Ballet. The ANB has a strict no-dating policy for its dancers, but her tour guide Marcus is hard to resist... and the perfect foil for her ex. Chloe Angyal writes with compassion about the slow, insidious nature of emotional abuse and how patriarchal institutions protect abusers.\\
\\
****_A Delicate Seduction_ by Regina Kammer**** \\
\\
Percival Wood, the Marquess of Norrington, reunites with his old friend Bertram Atherley, the Viscount Ravensburgh, for a Grand Tour of Europe after the death of his controlling partner. This lovely queer historical romance focuses on Percival as he finds joy and understanding now that he is free from abuse, while he still navigates the lingering effects of trauma.\\
\\
****_The Duchess Takes a Husband_ by Harper St. George**** \\
\\
After the death of her abusive husband, Camille, the Duchess of Hereford, wants to experience sexual pleasure and reclaim her sense of self. She turns to Jacob Thorne, the illegitimate son of an earl and a co-owner of an infamous private club. Jacob is the perfect partner for a recovering survivor: he is patient, generous, and wildly sexy. This Gilded Age historical romance is one of my personal favorites.\\
\\
On Rebel Ever After, Harper St. George shared her experience writing the book with me. She said, "It wasn't a book I was looking forward to writing for emotional reasons, but I knew I needed to write her story. It was sort of healing to write it. I'm glad that it landed so well. When I go to reader events, people will come up to me and tell me that that book really meant a lot to them on their own healing journey. It's great to get feedback that it landed, because that's what I want my books to do. They can get awards or star reviews or whatever, but for me, what really hits me and resonates with me is when people tell me, 'Oh, that really helped me at a time when I needed it.'"\\
\\
****_Get a Life, Chloe Brown_ by Talia Hibbert**** \\
\\
In this wildly popular contemporary rom-com, Chloe Brown is in a rut due to living with a chronic illness. She creates a list of adventures to have and recruits handyman Redford ‘Red’ Morgan to help her break out of her shell. Meanwhile, Red is slowly healing from a past relationship with an abusive ex-girlfriend. The two learn to meet each other's needs even as they butt heads. It's a sweet pleasure to watch them open up to new experiences and love.\\
\\
****_But How Are You, Really_ by Ella Dawson**** \\
\\
BONUS! My own romance novel is about a survivor of emotional abuse who thinks she's healed from her traumatic relationship in college... only to come face to face with the past at her college reunion. I worked hard to represent PTSD and how abuse makes survivors skittish about asking for help and trusting new partners.\\
\\
****If you or someone you know is experiencing intimate partner violence, you are not alone. The National Domestic Violence Hotline can anonymously offer you support and resources** **here** **.**** \\
\\
Please know that no one deserves to be abused, whether that abuse is emotional, financial, physical or digital. You can read my essays about abuse and trauma recovery here.](https://rebeleverafter.binderybooks.com/item/jlREMtpUes0Qq1IAoXT2/)

[In a world obsessed with narrow beauty standards fueled by media, advertising, and social platforms, it can be hard to see and love your body for what it truly is. It feels like all the books that go viral on BookTok and Bookstagram feature some 26 year old size 2, zero body fat, with huge boobs and a round ass. She’s ridiculously bendy and has the ideal beauty standards popular in western societies, aka the beauty standard of white supremacy. \\
\\
But here’s the truth: body diversity is beautiful, and every single body deserves love and acceptance. The journey toward body positivity starts within—by practicing self-love and embracing your unique shape and size.\\
\\
Our bodies come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and abilities. There’s no one “ideal” look—only the incredible variety of human bodies. Society often promotes a limited idea of beauty, but the reality is that every body has worth. Whether you have a small frame, luscious curves, scars from life, or are navigating disability, your body is an essential part of your identity.\\
\\
Celebrating this diversity is key to building a more inclusive world—and to your own self-acceptance.\\
\\
Many of us carry internalized societal messages that promote shame, making it hard to love ourselves. Book covers often show ‘perfect’ bodies that are unrealistic and unrepresentative, if I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard authors complaining that they can’t find plus size stock images. Comparing yourself to these images can lead to feelings of inadequacy. Past criticisms, whether from peers or family, also contribute to negative body image.\\
\\
In a world obsessed with narrow beauty standards—think tiny waists, zero body fat, and boobs so big they have their own zip codes—it’s honestly exhausting. Seriously, if I had a dollar for every BookTok or Bookstagram viral book featuring some 26-year-old size 2 with a six-pack, a round butt, and bendy flexibility that’s borderline superhero stuff, I’d be buying islands by now. It’s like the “perfect” bookish body is a white, Western, societal fantasy that’s basically a cookie cutter nobody actually looks like.\\
\\
But here’s the real deal: body diversity is _so much_ more beautiful than any airbrushed Instagram filter or viral TikTok star. Every single body on this planet deserves love—whether you’re rocking some stretch marks, an apron belly, scars from life’s adventures, or navigating disability. Your body is part of your story and who you are, and it’s time we stop pretending there’s just one “ideal.”\\
\\
Celebrating all kinds of bodies isn’t just some ‘nice’ thing to do—it’s essential for building a world where everyone feels seen and accepted. We’ve all internalized some level of society’s nonsense, and it’s easy to look at those glossy book covers or scroll through Instagram and start thinking, “Ugh, why do I look like this, and why isn’t that image more ‘normal’?” If I had a nickel for every time I heard an author complain about the difficulty of finding realistic, plus-size book covers, I’d probably be sipping margaritas on a yacht somewhere, on the island I already bought with all those dollars. Comparing yourself to those impossible standards? Yeah, I see you—been there, done that, bought the emotional distress T-shirt.\\
\\
The first step is recognizing these barriers and challenging them consciously.\\
\\
****Practical Ways to Embrace Your Body**** \\
\\
1. **Practice Daily Affirmations**\\
\\
Start each day by telling yourself something positive. Focus on your body’s strengths, like “I am grateful for my legs that carry me,” or “My smile is beautiful.”\\
\\
2. **Limit Harmful Media**\\
\\
Follow body-positive influencers and accounts that showcase beautiful diversity in appearance and lifestyle. Unfollow or mute content that triggers negative feelings.\\
\\
3. **Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Good**\\
\\
Clothing is a form of self-expression. Select outfits that reflect your style and boost your confidence—comfort over conformity.\\
\\
4. **Celebrate Movement and Health**\\
\\
Engage in activities you love—dancing, swimming, hiking—not as a way to change your body but to honor what it can do.\\
\\
\\
If you struggle with deep-seated shame or trauma related to body image please make sure you are talking about this with your therapist, but also, consider these approaches:\\
\\
Cultivating Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Challenge negative self-talk by asking, “Would I say this to a friend?” Focus on your strengths and accomplishments. Remember, the goal isn’t perfection—it's self-acceptance. Recognize that every small step counts. If you’re learning to love your body, celebrate the victories, no matter how tiny they seem.\\
\\
The power of community and support looks like surrounding yourself with people who uplift and support body diversity. Join online or local body-positive communities, share your journey, and listen to others' stories. Supporting each other creates an environment where everyone feels valued.\\
\\
Challenging societal standards can look like using your voice to advocate for representation of all body types in media, fashion, and advertising. Small acts—like complimenting someone’s style or speaking out against unrealistic beauty ideals—can create ripples of change.\\
\\
Don’t think I forgot to add the Romancelandia lens here, these novels are more than escapism—they can be tools for body validation. Reading stories with diverse MCs who love and desire themselves creates a sense of possibility and acceptance for your own body. Seeing characters with different body types celebrated for their confidence and sensuality helps solidify the idea that all bodies are worthy of love and pleasure.\\
\\
I remember the first book I read with a plus size heroine, and the first book I read that had spicy times with a plus size FMC. I was like…skrrrrr…wait, people actually have sex in plus size bodies. Granted I was young and had been conditioned to believe that my body was undesirable, repulsive even. But the more I read books with fat FMCs, the more I unlearned that, you know what, fat girls fuck. \\
\\
**So my non-exhaustive list of books I LOVE that have plus size FMCs**\\
\\
Like all of Olivia Dade’s books, let’s just get that straight right now.\\
\\
The Brown Sisters Trilogy and The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert\\
\\
Whirlwind by Kayla Grosse (for fans of Twister)\\
\\

\\

\\
For Her Consideration by Amy Spalding\\
\\
- Today, look in the mirror and find one thing you love about your body. Say it aloud or write it down. \\
\\
- Follow at least one body-positive influencer or account on social media. \\
\\
- Try a new activity that makes you feel joy and gratitude for your body—dancing, stretching, or simply taking a walk. \\
\\
- Read a romance novel featuring diverse body types. Notice how the characters love themselves and others—including their bodies.\\
\\
\\
Embracing all body types is a journey, and it’s different for everyone. Be patient and gentle with yourself—self-love isn’t a destination, but an ongoing process. Start with small acts each day: look in the mirror and find one thing you love about your body, or replace a negative thought with a positive one.\\
\\
**Remember, your body is your home—cherish it, celebrate it, and let it be a source of pride.**\\
\\
Your worth isn’t measured by how well you conform to society’s standards. It’s rooted in who you are—beautiful, whole, and enough.\\

[You definitely aren’t alone, I’m also navigating the wild, winding road of self-discovery—and let me tell you, it’s not a one-and-done kind of deal. For many of us, “coming of age” happened in adolescence—awkward braces, bad haircuts, and maybe a few embarrassing crushes. But honestly? That was just the opening act. The real, _adult_ coming of age happens when you realize that life, love, and even your own desires are way more complicated (and way more exciting) than a teen rom-com.\\
\\
**A Second Coming of Age—Because Who Says It’s Over?**\\
\\
If you’re anything like me, you've spent years unpacking some pretty heavy stuff—religious upbringing, conservative values, judgments about your body, your sexuality, your worth. Maybe you’re still peeling back those layers, questioning everything you once believed. That’s what I call the _second_ coming of age. And surprise: it’s just as messy, honest, and life-changing as the first.\\
\\
This second round is about _re_ discovering yourself—your desires, your boundaries, and your capacity to love and be loved. It’s about deconstructing old narratives and rebuilding a version of yourself that’s more aligned with who you _really_ are. And let’s be real: navigating this while unlearning a lot of shame—especially around sex and intimacy—can feel like trying to do a puzzle in the dark. But here’s the thing: you’re allowed to stumble, fumble, and laugh at yourself along the way.\\
\\
As a therapist, I see so many clients (myself included) who are just unraveling the layers of what society, religion, or family told us about our bodies and feelings. It’s often uncomfortable, sometimes heartbreaking, but also incredibly empowering. One thing I’ve learned: exploring our sexuality and love is a profoundly human experience. It’s about curiosity, honesty, and damn, a lot of patience with ourselves.\\
\\
**Romance Novels: Your Secret Weapon (And Yes, They’re Actually Good for You)**\\
\\
Now, here’s a little secret I tell my clients: romancelandia is _more_ than escapism—it's a safe space to learn about desire, consent, emotional intimacy, and even—let’s be honest—how to flirt without dying of embarrassment. Whether you’re looking for inspiration, validation, or just a good laugh, romance books can be a tool for understanding your own wants and needs.\\
\\
They give us permission to explore love in all its messy, imperfect glory. Plus, reading about people falling in love might just inspire you to do the same—without the heartbreak of bad dates or awkward moments (well, mostly). It’s like practice for real life, but with less risk and more happily-ever-afters.\\
\\
Books That Might Help You Level Up in Love and Self-Discovery\\
\\
Coming of Age in Youth:\\
\\
- "Last Night at the Telegraph Club" by Malinda Lo is a coming-of-age storythat explores themes of self-discovery, first love, and navigating identity during a time of social and political upheaval in 1950s America. \\
\\
- "The Build-a-Boyfriend Project," by Mason Deaver, is a coming-of-age story that explores themes of self-discovery, ambition, and love within the queer community, particularly focusing on the experience of a trans man. \\
\\
\\
Coming of Age in Adulthood\\
\\
- _"The Kiss Quotient"_ by Helen Hoang—A story about a woman figuring out what intimacy really means on her own terms. \\
\\
- _"Get a Life, Chloe Brown"_ by Talia Hibbert—A witty, heartfelt story about self-love and finding joy in your own skin and your relationships. \\
\\
- “Bad for Boss” by Talia Hibbert–\\
\\
- “Club Shadowlands” by Cherise Sinclair–A women stumbles on a sex club after her car gets stranded and her eyes are opened to a whole new world. Honestly this is probably my favorite BDSM series.\\
\\
- “The Awakening of Ivy Leavold” by Sierra Simone - a historical BDSM with a governess who finds herself in the context of BDSM\\
\\
- “ _See You Yesterday”_ by Rachel Lynn Solomon–The story explores themes of self-discovery, second chances, and the complexities of relationships, all while navigating the challenges of college life and a unique romantic entanglement with the boy also trapped in the loop\\
\\
- “Whenever You’re Ready” by Rachel Runya Katz–Estranged childhood friends-to-lovers, a road trip, siblings, grief and healing, a dual timeline. \\
\\
- “There’s Something About Mira” by Sonali Dev–from growing up in an immigrant community to conforming to her parents' expectations to finally finding her own happiness.\\
\\
- _"The Rosie Project"_ by Graeme Simsion—Quirky and sweet, about embracing imperfections and authentic connections.\\
\\
\\
**Why This Matters—and Why It’s Still Tough**\\
\\
Deconstructing from religious fundamentalism or conservative backgrounds adds an extra layer of complexity. It’s like trying to redesign your entire interior while living in the house. There’s guilt, confusion, fear, and moments of triumph and clarity—all rolled into one. Taking the time to _really_ explore what love, sex, and self-worth mean outside of those old narratives isn’t just important; it’s revolutionary.\\
\\
You’re re-writing your story—one that reflects the person you’re becoming, not the person those old beliefs tried to define for you. And let me tell you from experience: that’s hard work, messy work, but also the most vital work you can do.\\
\\
You Are Allowed to Re-Discover Yourself\\
\\
So, if you’re in the thick of your second coming of age, remember: You’re not alone. It’s okay to stumble, to question everything, and to take your time. Rebuilding your understanding of love, intimacy, and your own worth is a brave act—one that deserves patience and compassion. Embrace the mess, celebrate your progress, and trust that every step you take is a powerful step toward a more authentic, liberated you. Your story isn’t over; it’s just evolving. And honestly? That’s where the magic happens.\\

How Similar Is Our Taste in Books?
+10 points if you’ve read it
+5 points if it’s on your TBR
500 possible points (including Finding Gene Kelly 😉)

I’ve absolutely been loving this trend and I had to participate, even if I’m a little bit late to the game (as usual lol)

[romance books by black authors for you!](https://allshades.binderybooks.com/item/xNDmZnEvWrTsbx3rQBWD/)

didn’t title this “black romance recs” because
black romance = romance b/w 2 black characters written by a black author

✅ before i let go by kennedy ryan
❌ mile high by liz tomforde

however any book written by a black author with at least one black main character is a part of the black experience and should be celebrated! that includes interracial and multicultural romances 🫶🏾

celebrating romance by black authors with black characters ALL YEAR LONG!!!
