With lush illustrations and buoyant prose, Venessa Vida Kelley blends historical fantasy with epic romance at the turn of the 20th century in this unforgettable New York fairytale of queer identity and found family.

“Venessa gives life to the most unexpected things. I have a strong, strong feeling that this is the start of something special.” —TJ Klune, New York Times Bestselling author of The House in the Cerulean Sea.

Benigno “Benny” Caldera knows an orphaned Boricua blacksmith in 1910s New York City can’t call himself an artist. But the ironwork tank he creates for famed Coney Island playground, Luna Park, astounds everyone, especially the eccentric side-show proprietor who commissioned it. Benny’s work earns him an invitation to join the show’s eclectic crew of performers—his first welcome in the city—and share in their astonishing secret: the tank Benny built is a cage for their newest exhibit, a living, breathing, in-the-flesh merman stolen from the banks of the East River under a gleaming full moon.

The merman is more than a mythic marvel, though. Benny comes to know Río as a clever philosopher, an observant traveler, and a kindred spirit more beautiful and compassionate than any human he’s ever met. Despite their different worlds, what begins as a friendship of necessity deepens to love, leading Benny’s heart into uncharted waters where he can no longer ignore the agonizing truth of Río’s captivity—and his own.

A cage is no place for a merman to survive. Though releasing Río means betraying his new family, bankrupting their home, and losing his soulmate forever, Benny must look within for the courage to do what’s right, and find a love strong enough to free them both.

When the Tides Held the Moon is a beautifully illustrated novel with artwork throughout by Venessa Vida Kelley, known for her stunning romance and fantasy art. This novel includes two different full-color endpapers for front and back, fully-designed chapter headers, and 27 pieces of detailed illustrations throughout, using beautiful two-color, aqua blue and black inks.

\ \ I'm finally ready to share my pics for my 2025 bookish awards! These are some of the books I was most entertained by last year and I hope y'all will give them a try.\ \ The award for "Book I Couldn't Put Down" goes to You Should Have Been Nicer To My Mom by Vincent Tirado!\ \ \ \ The drama was delicious and I felt so seen by the storytelling. For those who have read my previous reviews, this probably isn't surprising to you!\ \ ......\ \ The award for "Book I'm Still Thinking About" goes to A Tropical Rebel Gets the Duke by Adriana Herrera! \ \ \ \ Some folks may be surprised by the fact that I chose a Romance novel for this award, but IYKYK. This Historical Romance uses the context surrounding our MC's stories in such a powerful way that you might have to sit with yourself for a little while when you finish reading it.\ \ ......\ \ I've got a three-way tie for the "Spiciest Romances" of 2025:\ \ I Accidentally Hooked Up With A Vampire by Jessica Cage, Blood & Brujas by Mikayla D. Hornedo, and All Superheroes Need Photo Ops by Elizabeth Stephens. \ \ \ \ This was a hard decision to make and I almost threw in I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I'm Trapped in a Rom-Com by Kimberly Lemming for good measure. These novels had me speechless (many times)!! If you haven't read anything by these authors (and Kimberly Lemming), I suggest you add their backlogs, babes.\ \ .......\ \ My indecision plagued me for my "Most Fun To Read" books of 2025, too. I ultimately went with A Man for Mrs. Claus by Rebekah Weatherspoon, A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna, and The Princess and The P.I. by Nikki Payne.\ \ \ \ These authors had me kicking my feet, giggling, and getting butterflies all story long! They gave me mystery, yearning, and safe spaces.\ \ .........\ \ Despite that, I have to say that my choice for "Coziest Novel" of the year goes to Only Lovers in the Building by Nadine Gonzalez.\ \ \ \ I'm a sucker for found family, but add in the location, the romance, and the beautiful writing and I'm sold. This Afro-Latina represented us so well!\ \ ......\ \ Last but definitely not least, my award for "Most Surprising Stories" of 2025 goes to:\ \ Blood Slaves by Markus Redmond, When The Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida Kelley, Lucha of the Forgotten Spring by Tehlor Kay Mejia, and Beasts of Carnaval by Rosália Rodrigo.\ \ \ \ These were the stories I didn't know I wanted! They were original, vivid, and kept me hooked. They may not be everyone's cup of tea but they hit just right for me.\ \ ..........\ \ Thank you to all of the authors who worked so hard to write these books and get them out in the world. They've brought readers (and librarians) like me outlets to rage, feel safe, and find ourselves. \ \ October was a busy month for me, but the four books I WAS able to read an listen to were all excellent.\ \ Rather than going in the order I read these books, I would like to highlight Local Heavens before continuing chronologically.\ \ Local Heavens, by K.M Fajardo- 4.5 Stars\ \ Local Heavens was one of the audio books I was able to select during the month of October through Libro's Audio Listening Copy (ALC) program, where I am able to select up to 10 select audiobooks each month. The premise of a cyberpunk take on The Great Gatsby interested me, and I was not disappointed. Also worth mentioning is that Local Heavens is one of Bindery's recently published books, through the Inky Phoenix Imprint!\ \ Local Heavens was a slightly slow start, but it drew me in quickly after the set up. Anyone who has read The Great Gatsby will have some familiarity with the overall story, going in to this novel, but Fajardo takes the time to set up the world and time that Local Heavens is set in. 2075 to be specific. The novel captures, if not improves the readers understanding and perception of the yearning between characters, class division and frustration of working class people, and emphasizes and writes what were queer undertones in the original, into a fully realized beautiful and tragic queer romance. Elements of the tiptoeing and tension that are seen in Pride and Prejudice between Darcy and Elizabeth also are frequently called to my mind, between multiple characters, but especially in regards to Jordan Baker and Jay Gatsby.\ \ I'd highly recommend reading Local Heavens. I came away feeling I understood The Great Gatsby itself better. Seeing the class divides and the corporate imperialism and power is easier to grasp in a futuristic setting than the that of the original set in the era of Prohibition. I'll be thinking of this book for a while.\ \ Assassin's Apprentice, by Robin Hobb- 5 Stars\ \ I have been hungry for a series like The Farseer Trilogy for a while. Hobb creates a world that moves slowly, though I never felt bored. Everything, every scene, every conversation, serves a purpose, even the seemingly mundane ones. I appreciate being able to sit with the characters and getting to watch the world expand organically at a pace that does not feel rushed, an issue that seems to be prevalent in much of modern fantasy today. The royal family politics, backstabbing (though not quite as harshly portrayed as GoT, thank god) court intrigue, and magic systems are all interesting and I've already started Royal Assassin.\ \ A Steeping of Blood, by Hafsah Faizal- 4 Stars\ \ This is the second book of The Blood and Tea Duology. There were so many things about this book that I really loved; the vampires OF COURSE, the continued themes of found/made family, especially a crime family. The yearning is excellent, the friendships are key foundations to the plot, fighting colonialism and imperialism. The book had me all the way to the end. I'm going to make some allusions to the end of the book and try to ensure that its not spoiled if you do read this series. Consider yourself forewarned, reader. I understand the final choice by the author and why it was made, but I can't say I like it or agree with it.\ \ When the Tides Held the Moon, by Vanessa Vida Kelley- 4 Stars\ \ This was a lovely historic Romantasy novel, following a young metalsmith from Puerto Rico who emigrated to New York, and later finds himself working at a "freakshow" on Coney Island in the early 1900's, after helping to unknowingly capture and imprison a merman. This novel shines a light on the experiences of immigrants, and people who are and have been "othered "in society. The found family, and romance were very moving and I could not stop listening to this audiobook. The romance between Benny and Rio could have felt like a prisoner/savior situation (in a bad way) but Vanessa wrote in a way that you can truly see that Benny was almost as much of a prisoner as Rio is, and he is determined to free Rio, even though he is terribly afraid. Both of losing him, and of the consequences from the perpetrators of Rio's capture. This was a delightful romantasy novel, and the cover art is incredible.\ \ I am super happy with all of my reads of this month and would recommend all of them.](https://the-alchemist-society.binderybooks.com/item/4vYAsSmqVsC0vlan7JNw/)

\ \ Hi everyone,\ \ It's been a while since I mentioned what I've been reading and August has been one hell of a reading month. I'm currently in the middle of a few books; When the Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida Kelley, which is our bookclub pick for this month. THIS IS SO GOOD. I've been taking my time reading it over the last week or so because I don't want it to end. This takes place in the early 1900s in NYC and is The Greatest Showman meets The Shape of Water. \ \ \ \ I'm also reading a an advanced reading copy of The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow that comes out later this year. Last year she came out with a short story called The Six Deaths of the Saints and it was so good I read it TWICE IN ONE WEEK. The Everlasting is a novel inspired by that story and it is giving me the same energy that had me obsessed. \ \ \ \ During a trip to NYC, I stopped in The Strand Bookstore and finally got my hands on The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. (my local bookstores need to do a better job of diversifying their shelves but thats a post for another day) I really appreciated this one! While some things seemed a bit predictable the overall story and writing was great and I'm looking forward to catching up on her backlist and what she's got in store for us next.\ \ \ \ This month I also reread The Will of the Many by James Islington to prepare for The Strength of the Few. I started TSOTF shortly after and could not put it down, I can't wait until November so we can properly chat about it but it was absolutely insane. Look out for my spoiler free thoughts coming soon.\ \ \ \ And I've also been in my romance bag that last month or so. I caught up on all of Emily Henry's books and started by Ali Hazelwood journey and they both had me squealing and kicking my feet, their books are so fun. I was super surprised by the depth in Henry's books as well, and am looking forward to exploring more of Hazelwood's.\ \ \ \ \ \ But I think the standout book for me this month has to be James by Percival Everett, I finished this book in ONE SITTING and understand why he deserved the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize. This Hucklberry Finn retelling is STELLAR and flips Twain's tale on its head to provide a raw depiction of what slaves like James had to endure, and what they held back. I read it in tandem with audio and it really brought the story to life, highly recommend. \ \ \ \ I'm hoping to finish a few more books in this last week of the month, and I'll be sure to keep you all posted. Look out for updates on the September bookclub pick in the discord, and an article about Fall Releases written by me coming next month in Readin' Magazine.](https://writtenreveries.binderybooks.com/item/3OaBgE956dZvAn6xF3uY/)

Hi there Disco Dancers,\ \ Here are some Hispanic romances to help you see out the summer, and one for autumn!\ \ You Had Me at Hola by Alexis Daria\ \ \ \ I loved this contemporary romance about two Latine telenovela stars trying to resist temptation and their attraction to one another. She’s a rising star recovering from a public break up, determined to be a leading lady with no drama. He’s Puerto Rican star with anxiety and a very private life that he keeps closely guarded.\ \ The tension was sizzling, the romance adorable, and I was grinning my face off by the end!\ \ When the Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida Kelley\ \ \ \ Historical fantasy merman romance has my whole heart. When an asthmatic Puerto Rican blacksmith unwittingly helps a carnival capture a merman, he joins the troupe to try and free him, falling in love as he does. I did get a bit frustrated by the MC’s hesitation, the plot to actually free the merman took a while, but it had me overflowing with emotion by the end. I also loved that the merman’s POV chapters were written in a different, beautiful, lyrical style.\ \ Castle of the Cursed by Romina Garber\ \ \ \ This is a fun, very YA haunted house story about a 17 year old girl who witnesses the mysterious death of a whole subway carriage of people, including her parents, and is then invited to stay in a Spanish castle by an aunt she never knew she had. Turns out, the castle is creepy, the whole town worships it, and there’s a handsome vampire trapped in there with her.\ \ This has some flaws – the plot takes place over 3 weeks, which is way too fast, and some of the incessant on-page Spanish to English translating gets a bit frustrating. Some people have criticised the insta-love between the FMC and the vampire, but that didn’t bother me. What teenager doesn’t fall in love with a hot vampire immediately? It’s tradition!\ \ With love,\ \ Disco x \ \ Upgrade for $5 or login

Happy Pride Month party people and disco dancers!\ \ I’m having an amazing reading month so far, I’ve read 2 new favourites and my current read is shaping up to be top 10 of this year too. Here’s what I’ve been reading:\ \ Seven Recipes for Revolution by Ryan Rose\ \ \ \ This is a queer anti-establishment fantasy about a young butcher who becomes a rebel figurehead in an unequal world full of food-based magic.\ \ It’s action packed, brutal and emotional, and I stayed up way too late finishing it! The food descriptions are incredible and made me so hungry (even though I don’t eat meat). It’s book 1 in a series but I felt satisfied at the end, you could totally stop there. I have rave review on TikTok. This is out in July.\ \ A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna\ \ \ \ The Very Secret Society for Irregular Witches is one of my absolute favourite books, and this follow up is, I think, even better.\ \ It follows an Indian-Icelandic innkeeper witch who’s lost her magic, who lives with a hectic, brilliant found family in Lancashire with her disabled Indian great-aunt, a zombie chicken, her magical Icelandic cousin, a chivalrous knight, and a hilarious Black gardener/goat enthusiast. If that’s not enough, then a quiet, handsome Scottish magical scholar and his autistic little sister come to stay.\ \ This book felt like a tender, understanding hug, I loved it. Out in July!\ \ Current reads\ \ \ \ Right now I’m loving When the Tides Held the Moon by Vanessa Vida Kelly, an mm merman romance based in 1910s New York. The human MMC is a Puerto Rican asthmatic blacksmith, and there’s a beautiful found family (you can tell it’s my favourite trope) of carnival performers. It’s also illustrated and stunning! Out now.\ \ I’ve also started a sapphic horror, Feast While You Can by Mikaella Clements and Onjuli Datta. I’m only a few pages in but the writing is already luscious and creepy, I can’t wait to see where it goes.\ \ \ \ On my radar\ \ I just got the proof for Human Rites by Juno Dawson! This is book 3 in the Her Majesty’s Royal Coven series, and I feel so grateful to get it. I’ll be reading it ASAP.\ \ \ \ Do share what you’re reading in the comments and on the Discord!\ \ Be excellent to each other,\ \ Love,\ \ Disco\ \ Join for free or login

A stunning novel that swept me away with its breathtaking prose, unforgettable characters, and deeply moving exploration of love, identity, and belonging.
