The Godfather meets The Magicians in the sweeping adult debut from #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu. Perfect for fans of V.E. Schwab, Red City is a dark and deadly contemporary fantasy of magical warfare, star-crossed ambition, and the pursuit of perfection at any cost, set in a glittering alternate Los Angeles.

Alchemy is the hidden art of transformation. An exclusive power wielded by crime syndicates that market it to the world’s elites in the form of sand, a drug that enhances those who take it into a more perfect version of themselves: more beautiful, more charismatic, simply more.

Among the gleaming skyscrapers and rolling foothills of Angel City, alchemy is controlled by two rival syndicates. For years, Grand Central and Lumines have been balanced on a razor’s edge between polite negotiation and outright violence. But when two childhood friends step into that delicate equation, the city—and the paths of their lives—will be irrevocably transformed.

The daughter of a poor single mother, Sam would do anything to claw her way into the ranks of Grand Central in search of a better life. Plucked away from his family as a boy to become a Lumines apprentice, Ari is one of the syndicates' brightest rising stars. Once, they might have loved each other. But as the two alchemists face off across opposite sides of an ever-escalating conflict, ambition becomes power, loyalty becomes lies, and no transformation may be perfect enough for them both to survive the coming war.

I’ve heard wonderful things about Red City, a new fantasy romance and the first book in an incomplete series. We can also choose to continue on with The Dandelion Dynasty series together. Full disclosure—I’ve already read Wall of Storms and I LOVED IT. It’s better than Grace of Kings and very action packed.\ \ Happy voting everyone!! Poll:\ \ Did this convince you to read it?\ \ Red City. \ \ Wow, I have seen so many mixed reviews on this on this book but I was completely blown away. \ \ First off, third person is fantastic in this story. We follow two characters who are childhood friends but are unknowingly in opposite syndicates in the illusive sand industry. The magic system is really cool, Alchemy, allows people to be able to transform any matter into different materials but uses a fragment of their soul. The applications are really cool and numerous and I really enjoyed this. The storytelling was very vivid in my head and could really visualize it. \ \ The world reminds me of Jady City or a godfather style story and I ATE IT UP. \ \ The third person style really works for me here where the story is elevated and it made me love the characters even more. The romance and yearning in this book was so good! I would not consider this a romantasy cause I don't feel the whole point of the plot was the romance.\ \ It had high stakes, cool magic, steamy romance, and characters to love. \ \ I CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK TWO. \ \ This book is being slept on and is CRIMINALLY underhyped. GO READ IT. \ \ This is officially on Alysha's hype team must read. \ \ If you use the link on this to buy the book, I do get commision just fyi!

Red City!! Must read. (Spoiler Free)

Hello everyone! Real quickly before we get into what I read this past week, my TikTok account was hacked! I know they Have been going live to try to sell (ugly) jewelry and making posts about it. I’m not sure if they are DMing people but please do not purchase anything or click on any links. I am working on getting it back but TikTok has been radio silent so I’m not sure when I’ll get it back but I’m doing everything I can!!\ \ Okay now onto what I read so far in October.\ \ I did finish our two book club picks: Wild Revernece by Rebecca Ross for our fantasy pick and Theme Music by T. Marie Vandelly for our horror pick. I do have discussion pages open on my discord to discuss further about these! \ \ Wild Reverence 4.25 ⭐️\ \ Theme Music 3 ⭐️ \ \ More in depth thoughts at the end of the month to let others finish up \ \ I did also read Do You Remember by Freida McFadden 3⭐️ this was a nice quick palette cleanser book. It’s very simple and surface level, a great pick for beginners \ \ I’m currently reading an ARC of Red City by Marie Liu in 50 pages in and I’m already hooked! I’ve seen a lot of mutuals give this 5 ⭐️ so I am very excited to see where it goes!! The synopsis is giving me Jade city vibes 😁
