From V. E. Schwab, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: a new genre-defying novel about immortality and hunger.

This is a story about hunger.

1532. Santo Domingo de la Calzada. A young girl grows up wild and wily—her beauty is only outmatched by her dreams of escape. But María knows she can only ever be a prize, or a pawn, in the games played by men. When an alluring stranger offers an alternate path, María makes a desperate choice. She vows to have no regrets.

This is a story about love.

1827. London. A young woman lives an idyllic but cloistered life on her family’s estate, until a moment of forbidden intimacy sees her shipped off to London. Charlotte’s tender heart and seemingly impossible wishes are swept away by an invitation from a beautiful widow—but the price of freedom is higher than she could have imagined.

This is a story about rage.

2019. Boston. College was supposed to be her chance to be someone new. That’s why Alice moved halfway across the world, leaving her old life behind. But after an out-of-character one-night stand leaves her questioning her past, her present, and her future, Alice throws herself into the hunt for answers . . . and revenge.

This is a story about life—how it ends, and how it starts.

[This post is not, strictly speaking, fully book related. But I hope you'll stick with me, because this is an important topic that is really important to me. And I will recommend some books.\ \ ***Trigger warning: This post will discuss SA and domestic violence***\ \ A recent CNN report exposed an online network of men discussing how to drug women and commit SA, the targets often being their partners. The website that was most implicated had over 62 million views, and a majority of views were coming from IP addresses in the US.\ \ And while this may be written off by some as an isolated issue, in the online book world, we see women, people of color, and marginalized groups treated poorly every day. I see women in the book world having to deal with male commenters accusing them of "showing off their bodies for views," while at the same time sending them suggestive material in their DMs. Every time someone tries to post a video suggesting more diverse sci fi and fantasy authors, they are met with backlash, and the inevitable "I don't care who writes the books I read." The pushback to representation and fair treatment is often, quite frankly, staggering. All the while, women are criticized for reading "smut." Women who write fantasy stories with any romance get labeled as romantasy authors, while their male counterparts are just fantasy authors. We shame women for reading sexual material, but don't bat an eye to the sexual goings on traditional fantasy because "it's gritty and realistic for the era."\ \ I'm a dad to teenage boys. I have a wife, sisters, nieces and nephews. My boys and I talk a lot about making other people feel safe around us, treating everyone equally and with respect, and avoiding the pitfalls of the modern hoax of "masculinity." In an era where influencers are trying to convince boys to looksmax, heightmax, or take testosterone supplements in their teens (please don't do that), our young men are more and more being exposed to patriarchal, overly macho, chauvinistic ideas of what being a man means.\ \ I'm someone who believes in facts, and data. So here are some facts (according to Take Back the Night):\ \

I'm in the middle of reading Bury our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab for our book club (join our Discord to participate!) and I can't help but notice the similarities it has with her previous novel, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. \ \ I read Addie last year (or rather, listened to it) and ultimately ended up really liking it. It took me several months to get through it, not because it wasn't great, but because her writing doesn't lend itself to speedy consumption. Her prose is detailed, romantic, and it pays to spend time with it. I struggle with audiobooks as it is (ADHD brain be damned), so trying to listen to the book while I was playing basketball or doing chores was a bit of a losing battle at times. Towards the end of the book where the stakes start to feel a little more urgent, and Addie is really coming to terms with the life that she's found for herself, I couldn't put it down. 5/5 from me, and it immediately made me curious about her other work. \ \ If you don't know, Addie LaRue is about a young woman in France in the 1700's who makes a deal with the devil for ultimate freedom, allowing her to escape her bethrotal to a man she doesn't even know. In true faustian bargain fashion, she is granted immortality, but the monkey paw curls and she finds that none of her family remember who she is, nor will anyone else for the rest of her life. Tragic stuff! \ \ The novel sprawls across the centuries between her first encounter with the devil and present day, where she happens to find someone who does remember her, and eventually falls into a relationship with them. I won't say much more than that, but my point is that Schwab uses that framework to illustrate the longing and psychological turmoil that one goes through when you live for hundreds of years. Her writing is beautiful, and if you're the sappy romantic type like me, I think you'll get a lot of out of the book. \ \ Fast foward to today and I am in the middle of reading Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil. Bury Our Bones deals with three lesbian vampires, living their lives across three separate times and places: 1530s Spain, 1827 London, and 2019 Boston. Much like Addie, vampires keep on keeping on into eternity barring any major setbacks. About 120 pages in to Bury Our Bones, it has become clear to me that Schwab has a real fascination with eternity. To be real, don't we all?\ \ As a human being, I hope that by the time I reach my end, the number of seconds allotted to me will feel like the exact right amount. I think we all fear that we won't have enough, and maybe it'll never be enough, but the prospect of immortality brings its own set of anxieties. What do I do will all my loved ones disappear? Who do I relate to when I'm the only one with this predicament? How do I navigate this life without being studied like a science experiment? \ \ So far, Bury Our Bones has been another banger of a book, and I very much appreciate the sapphic world that it lives in. If I may recommend another book about immortality, I highly encourage you to seek out The Past Through Tomorrow by Robert A. Heinlein, specifically the story Methuselah's Children. The Past Through Tomorrow exists as an imagined future history, charting out the social and technological future of humanity from the early 1900's to hundreds of years in the future. Heinlein wrote these stories across many decades, and his grand vision for the future of humanity is a marvel to behold in its entirety. You may have to endure some elements of his writing that haven't aged well, but if you're a sci-fi nerd, I can't recommend the collection highly enough. \ \ Methuselah's Children follows a man named Lazarus Long, who if you are paying close attention, exists throughout the breadth of the stories from the very beginning. The oldest man on earth lives through earth's trials and tribulations for hundreds of years, and eventually sets his sights on the stars. It's one of my favorite short stories ever, in one of my favorite short story collections ever. Well worth your time, and thanks to my grandfather for lending it to me several years ago. \ \ Anyway, enough rambling for me today. What are you reading? What are you listening to? What are you watching? Here's some good stuff. \ \ Have a wonderful day!\ \ Shawn

Sapphic Speculative Fiction Expands the Imagination\ \ Many people approach queer romance through familiar frameworks. Modern settings. Recognizable social rules. Families that resemble the structures most of us grew up around. I wrote about this a week or two ago, about looking beyond contemporary romance for great sapphic stories.\ \ Those stories matter. They reflect lived experience and present-day struggles.\ \ Yet some of the most thought-provoking sapphic stories appear in places where the rules look completely different.\ \ Speculative fiction offers writers a simple but radical tool. The ability to ask what happens when the world operates under different assumptions?\ \ What happens when gender does not function the way our societies expect?\ \ What happens when colonial hierarchies collapse or never existed in the first place?\ \ What happens when family and community follow different structures?\ \ Sapphic speculative fiction thrives in these questions.\ \ What counts as speculative fiction?\ \ Speculative fiction serves as an umbrella term for stories that imagine worlds different from our own.\ \ Fantasy explores magic, mythology, and alternate societies.\ \ Science fiction looks at future technology, space exploration, and evolving social systems.\ \ Alternate history reimagines historical timelines.\ \ Dystopian and utopian fiction examine political systems taken to extreme outcomes.\ \ Magical realism blends ordinary life with elements that challenge reality.\ \ All of these genres share a common feature. They build worlds where the assumptions we treat as natural begin to shift.\ \ When those foundations move, storytelling changes.\ \ Reimagining gender systems\ \ Many speculative worlds question the rigid gender frameworks common in contemporary culture.\ \ Some settings include fluid understandings of gender. Others remove the strict gender hierarchy. Some societies organize identity through entirely different categories.\ \ When gender works differently, relationships evolve as well.\ \ Characters express attraction without the scripts that dominate many romance narratives. Partnerships develop around compatibility, trust, or shared goals rather than predetermined roles.\ \ For readers, this shift opens new ways of thinking about identity and connection.\ \ Challenging colonial power structures\ \ Speculative fiction often explores empire, conquest, and resistance.\ \ Many worlds center characters fighting against oppressive systems or rebuilding communities after political collapse. Some stories draw inspiration from Indigenous traditions or non-Western perspectives to imagine societies structured around different values.\ \ Within these settings, sapphic characters frequently appear as leaders, rebels, scholars, or explorers. Their relationships unfold inside larger struggles over power, survival, and cultural memory.\ \ Love does not exist in isolation. It grows alongside questions about justice, resistance, and the future of entire communities.\ \ Rethinking family and community\ \ Another striking feature of speculative fiction involves how stories approach family.\ \ The nuclear family model rarely stands as the only option. Characters often live within chosen families, cooperative communities, traveling crews, or political alliances.\ \ Romantic relationships exist inside these broader networks of care.\ \ Two people falling in love may also share responsibilities to their crew, their village, or their resistance movement. Partnership becomes part of a wider web of loyalty and support.\ \ For many readers, this structure feels both imaginative and deeply familiar.\ \ Common tropes in sapphic speculative fiction\ \ Speculative fiction combines romance with adventure and conflict. Certain narrative patterns recur.\ \ A princess guarded by a loyal warrior or knight who begins to question her duty.\ \ Rival soldiers from opposing factions are forced to work together.\ \ A scholar and a fighter navigating a dangerous quest.\ \ Political enemies are forming uneasy alliances during a rebellion.\ \ Explorers encounter unfamiliar worlds and build trust through survival.\ \ These tropes create tension, intimacy, and emotional growth while the larger story unfolds.\ \ Why these stories expand the imagination\ \ Speculative fiction does more than entertain. It shifts perspective.\ \ When readers step into worlds built on different assumptions, the systems shaping their own lives become visible. Gender roles, political hierarchies, and family structures reveal themselves as historical constructs rather than permanent truths.\ \ Sapphic speculative fiction takes this imaginative shift even further.\ \ Queer women appear not as side characters but as central figures in the story of the world itself. They lead revolutions. Build communities. Explore unknown territories. Fall in love while reshaping the societies around them.\ \ These stories ask readers to imagine something larger than representation.\ \ They ask us to imagine entirely different ways people live together.\ \ An invitation to explore\ \ If you have not spent time with sapphic speculative fiction, consider this an invitation.\ \ Explore fantasy worlds where magic reshapes power.\ \ Read science fiction that questions identity in future societies.\ \ Look for stories where love grows alongside resistance, exploration, and discovery.\ \ These books stretch the imagination in ways that linger long after the final page.\ \ I am especially interested in reading more sapphic speculative fiction this year.\ \ Which books expanded your worldview?\ \ Which stories stayed with you long after you finished them?\ \ Here is a list of books I've read and books on my TBR!\ \ \ \ Join for free or login

My Favorite Reads of 2025 🪩

I read so many books for my thesis and for work in 2025, and many of them made my list of favorite reads for the year. I also read a ton of fiction, continuing my horror streak from last year and deep-diving into new-to-me authors.

Here’s to another year of book club meetings, listening to audiobooks on my commute to therapy, and staying up way too late reading comics in bed. 💛📚

Poll:\ \ How many books did you read in November?\ \ Q: How are you spending your first day of December? \ \ Happy December, my darlings! I've had a lazy day trying to recover from the holiday (and of course doing about a million dishes). Howdy lil freakies! \ \ Here's my roll-up of everything I read this month. Full spoilers and deep dive reviews can be found on my YouTube channel, but you guys get to see what I read behind the scenes!\ \ Below is a roll-up of books with unprofessional summaries and reasoning for the rating.\ \ An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks ⭐/5 \ \ A woman in her 20s crashes a local university's psychology study. The professor running the study is sketchy af, and the book follows the dynamic between these two. I feel like everyone's motives were weird/nonsensical. There was no real reason for any of it, and it ended on such an oddly hollow note.\ \ Never Lie by Freida McFadden ⭐⭐/5 \ \ Okay, genuinely, I'm becoming a certified fan (derogatory) of Freida. The writing sucks, the plots are nonsensical but it's genuinely so entertaining. I don't get tired of these weird weird books lol. This one was about a woman and her boyfriend who get trapped in a snowstorm. Trapped where, you ask? In a famous psychologsit's house... who went missing a few months ago. And from the jump, everyone is acting sketchy and lying to eachother.\ \ The Guest List by Lucy Foley ⭐⭐⭐/5 \ \ This one will be my first December upload on the channel! There's a wedding being held on a creepy island. The book follows the POV of various guests and talks about their relationships and how they got to this point in their lives. Everything seems like rich people messy problems, until someone comes across a dead body. The premise was awesome. Only critique was that it was a sloooooow build and in general the pacing was a little off. Other issues are spoilers, so watch the video if you want more.\ \ We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer ⭐⭐⭐/5 \ \ Eve and her girlfriend buy a house to flip. One day Eve is there alone and this off-putting family knocks on the door, says that they used to live there and would love to take a look around. AND SHE LETS THEM INSIDE. Someone on Goodreads said this book was r/NoSleep coded, and I couldn't say it better. It was interesting, and then we went off the rails in a way that felt like a Jordan Peele movie, but without the right set up.\ \ Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman ⭐⭐/5 \ \ Speaking of Jordan Peele... 8 year old girl tells us about her daddy, mommy and other mommy. My stomach dropped reading the description and there were a few other moments in the book that gave me that feeling, however, they were over shadowed by repetitiveness and just odd narrative choice. It's from an 8 year old, but she talked/thought like she was much younger and then her parents talked to her like she was an adult. And also the tension of WHAT other mommy is and what she looks like is immediately ruined and she wasn't scary anymore, just a weird creepy vibes rommate instead of a monster under the bed. Ya know? I don't think monsters should be described directly or in detail, that almost always kills the vibe.\ \ When the Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 \ \ Little boy's dad turns into a wolf monster when he gets mad. One day he runs from home and runs into a woman. She takes him in and tries to protect him. It's an absolute batshit ride from there. SUCH a unique premise, fast paced, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I really enjoyed this one. The ending was a little meh, but great otherwise.\ \ Bury Our Bones in Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab ⭐⭐/5 \ \ Getting away from thriller and horror genre binge, I read this fantasy/historical fiction/toxic saphhic vampire book. That premise? Wild. Love. Sign me up. The execution? ahhhhhhh. The ending pissed me off enough to go down an entire star. But, it was a multiple timeline story that eventually interconnects and boy howdy do I eat that up lmao. The timeline, premise and general vibes really carried this book. The characters felt shallow, the pacing wasn't the best and that ending made get up and go for a walk because I was so mad and made me feel like I wasted my time.\ \ Other News \ \ I'll be doing a 2025 Q&A video in a few weeks. If there's anything you've ever wanted to know, ask me here!\ \ For full spoilers and long-form deep dives of other books I read this month, check out my YouTube channel!\ \ In November, I reviewed:\ \ Animal Farm by George Orwell ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5\ \ Hooked by Emily McIntire ⭐⭐/5\ \ Housemaid series by Freida McFadden ⭐/5\ \ Butcher and Blackbird by Brynne Weaver ⭐⭐⭐/5\ \ None of This is True by Lisa Jewell ⭐⭐/5
