Some places don’t let the past stay buried.
Woods Bay is one of them.
Woods Bay is a quiet Washington town known for the kind of beauty that makes it easy to forget what came before.
Jenna Willcot rarely leaves home, her world narrowed by years of severe anxiety. When she discovers that her partner, who tragically died in a car accident, secretly booked her a stay at a horror-themed rental cabin in Woods Bay, she can’t bring herself to cancel it. The trip feels like a final gift. A last push forward.
Twenty-five years ago, eleven people were killed on the very land where Jenna’s cabin now stands. The truth was never fully uncovered, and Woods Bay moved on the way small towns do: quietly.
Jenna’s arrival coincides with the discovery of a new body just outside town. Then another. As fear spreads and old secrets resurface, Jenna teams up with locals Erica and Steve to survive what’s unfolding and uncover what still lingers in Woods Bay.

This week was mostly Small Town Slasher release prep as the release date is a little over a week away!\
\
The preorder stickers arrived, and I love them. There is something very satisfying about finally having a physical piece of the preorder campaign after spending so much time staring at files, listings, graphics, captions, and deadlines. If you have not preordered yet, there is still time.\
\
I also finished editing the stories for Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night: A Yuletide Horror Anthology, which is a huge step forward. It is a little strange to be working on a summer slasher release and winter horror at the same time, but I love all horror so much. \
\
We had a really fun book club this week too, which was nice. Not every book-related thing has to be a deadline, an email, a preorder reminder, or me trying to understand TikTok against my will. Sometimes it can just be people talking about books, which is still one of my favorite things AND next week I have two podcast appearances and you know that panel I mentioned that I'm on with STEPHEN GRAHAM JONES! Busy week!\
\
I also watched some movies and listened to the new Charli xcx album. Behind the scenes, I am still working on release prep, website updates, social media, future events, and all the little tasks that somehow keep multiplying. I am excited for Small Town Slasher to be out in the world, but I am also very aware that release weeks are a lot, especially when there are already more books waiting behind it.\
\
So this week was stickers, Yuletide edits, book club, movies, Charli xcx, and the ongoing countdown to Small Town Slasher.\
\
Very normal. Very calm. Definitely not nerve-wracking at all.\

I have mostly been relying on B uffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, Owl House, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and my usual late 1990s and early 2000s comfort rewatches while I work. Oh and I watched the first episode of the Lizzie McGuire show\
\
For movies I watched the Tobey Maguire Spidermans and now I'm onto my rewatch of the Andrew Garfield ones. Also I watched Saltburn (it was...a lot but I loved it), \

That is all for this week. What is something that brought you joy this past week?\

The night before my first in-person author event, I tried to stay as busy as possible. I worked, watched distracting shows, and made graphics for social media. Basically, anything that might keep me from thinking too hard about what I had agreed to do.\
\
I took the muscle relaxer that usually helps me sleep, but I still tossed and turned. I felt like Owen Wilson in Armageddon when he says he is 98 percent excited and 2 percent scared, or maybe 2 percent excited and 98 percent scared. That was me. I knew both feelings were in there somewhere, but I could not have told you which one was winning.\
\
Since I am nocturnal, I woke up around noon the next day. I was more nauseous than usual and immediately started trying to get everything ready: my outfit, makeup, nausea medication, books, pens, markers, and bookmarks. I checked everything more than once because my brain had apparently decided this was the moment to stop trusting itself.\
\
My partner and I finally left for the bookstore. The drive was about forty minutes, so I put on a Charli xcx playlist and sang the entire way there. Singing is one of the best ways I have found to calm my nervous system, and I was going to need all the help I could get.\
\
When we arrived, it felt like there was a bowling ball sitting in my stomach. I was already dragging, so I walked around the bookstore for a while and acquired an iced latte, which was probably not the most logical treatment for anxiety and nausea, but it felt necessary.\
\
Then it was almost time for me to be introduced.\
\
I waited backstage and peeked out at the audience. There were about ten people, and a few of them were cradling my book in their arms.\
\
My book.\
\
That part still does not feel real.\
\
I had prepared several sections to read and practiced them ahead of time, but I had not actually timed any of it. We had promoted the event as a reading, signing, and Q&A, so I assumed people would have questions and that the conversation would fill the rest of the hour.\
\
I came out, said hello, and told everyone I would begin with a reading.\
\
For the first few minutes, I shakily read the opening paragraphs of Hiding Lies. I had somehow forgotten exactly how dark the beginning was, so I might reconsider starting with that section in the future.\
\
As I sat there reading, terrified and sick to my stomach, one thought became very clear:\
\
I never wanted to do another event again.\
\
I finished the first section and tried asking if anyone had questions.\
\
No one answered.\
\
I read another passage, this time from Adam’s point of view. I had not prepared anything to say about it, but I started explaining what I had been thinking while writing the scene. That broke the silence a little, but when I looked at the time, it was only 7:20.\
\
I had no idea what I was supposed to do next.\
\
I asked again if anyone had questions.\
\
Crickets.\
\
Then my partner, bless his heart, called out, “Why don’t you talk about how you wrote it?”\
\
Something immediately changed.\
\
I began telling everyone about the life of Hiding Lies, how the story had developed, and everything that had gone into making the book. As I spoke, I saw people smiling and nodding. My nerves started to fall away.\
\
Questions came. Then comments. Then more questions.\
\
What followed was forty-five minutes of an intimate, incredible conversation with readers.\
\
People told me that my book had made them feel seen and understood. One woman in particular shared that she had experienced feelings similar to the ones I had while writing it. It was incredibly brave of her to say that in a room full of people.\
\
I have never experienced a connection like that before.\
\
I definitely want to experience it again.\
\
By the end of the night, I had gone from thinking I would never do another event to immediately understanding why authors keep doing them, even when they are difficult, exhausting, expensive, and terrifying.\
\
I am going to keep trying to arrange events, beginning here in the Pacific Northwest, where I live. I would also love to do one larger event or small tour each year. My health and finances will always have to be a major part of those decisions, and I have to be realistic about what I can manage.\
\
But I am so grateful that I was finally able to give Hiding Lies the event it deserved.\
\
I got to talk openly about what the book means to me. I got to hear what it meant to readers. I got to nerd out about Small Town Slasher, slashers, horror, and writing with people who genuinely wanted to be there.\
\
For the first twenty minutes, I thought the night was confirming every fear I had.\
\
Instead, it became one of the most meaningful experiences I have had as an author.\

This week has mostly been about the fact that Small Town Slasher releases in just over two weeks, which is both exciting and nervewrecking. I hope more preorders come in. \
\
I received another incredible blurb for the book:\
\
“Fast-paced and blood-soaked, this entertaining thrill ride is a must read for slasher fans.”\
\
—Justine Pucella Winans, award-winning author of How to Survive a Slasher\
\
I am incredibly grateful that authors I admire have taken the time to read and support this strange, bloody little book. Every time another person understands what I was trying to do with Small Town Slasher, it makes the long and often ridiculous publishing process feel a little more worthwhile.\
\
A lot of this week was spent preparing for release. I worked on promotional graphics, captions, website updates, event pitches, and all the other pieces involved in ensuring that people are aware of a book's existence when it's released. It's really challenging wearing all of the hats. Thursday is 100 days until Halloween AND the one month anniversary of Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night: Another Halloween Horror Anthology. If you haven't purchase your copy today and please leave a review once you read it. <3\
\
I made some significant changes to my author website, including updates to the homepage, book pages, events section, and contact page. My website has needed attention for a while, but it is difficult to stop working on the books long enough to work on the place where I am supposed to tell people about the books. It is finally doing a much better job of showing who I am, what I write, and what is coming next.\
\
I also started making a more serious attempt at TikTok.\
\
Video content does not come naturally to me, and I am still trying to understand how people find an audio, immediately know what to do with it, film something, edit it, add text, and post it. I did manage to post my first trend-based Small Town Slasher video, though, and I am working on more content for the release.\
\
I Wish I Was a Vampire has been with beta readers and my editor. The beta reading window ended Friday, which means the next stage is my editor and I sorting through the feedback and beginning the final editing process.\
\
The book releases September 15, so there is not much time between finishing Small Town Slasher release work and moving directly into final preparations for my middle grade debut.\
\
I continued reaching out to bookstores and other venues about future events.I would love to do more in-person appearances, but the financial and accessibility side has to make sense. Excitement does not pay for transportation, lodging, or the recovery time that often follows an event.\
\
I have also been exploring programming that goes beyond a standard reading and signing, including conversations about slashers, horror films, nostalgia, disability in horror, and the way movies influence my writing. I want events to feel like something people are genuinely excited to attend, not simply an author sitting behind a table hoping someone stops.\
\
I am preparing for my TBRCon panel, “Problems with the Final Girl Trope.” I am especially interested in discussing final girls who move beyond the narrow version of the trope we have seen so many times, including disabled characters and stories that allow more than one woman to survive.\
\
I also made sure to ask for the panel questions in advance. Virtual events may remove the travel, but that does not mean they are automatically accessible or easy. Knowing what I will be asked gives me time to organize my thoughts and helps me participate without spending the entire panel fighting through anxiety.\
\
Because it is Disability Pride Month, I wrote about what it means to be a disabled author. Disability affects how I write, travel, attend events, meet readers, and run Death by TBR Books. It is also woven into the stories I tell.\
\
I am proud of what I have accomplished, but I do not want to pretend that I accomplish it in the same way or at the same pace as someone who is not dealing with the same limitations. Even virtual events can be challenging. Even good days can require recovery afterward. Both things can be true: I can love this work, and it can be incredibly difficult for me to do it.\
\
When I look at the individual days from this week, it can feel like I spent most of them answering emails, changing website text, fighting with captions, or moving the same tasks from one list to another.\
\
But Small Town Slasher is nearly here.\
\
I Wish I Was a Vampire is moving through beta reading and editing.\
\
My website is substantially better.\
\
I am learning an entirely new platform, preparing for a major panel, pitching events, running a bookstore and press, and continuing to make plans for books that will not be published until next year. My youngest, Sidney, has been keeping me company while I write and edit and work on social media.\

This week was my first in-person author event at Village Books. I was incredibly anxious leading up to it, but it turned out to be such a wonderful night. People came to hear me talk about Hiding Lies and Small Town Slasher, asked thoughtful questions, bought books, and reminded me why I keep doing this even when the behind-the-scenes parts feel impossible sometimes.\
\
Village Books was so welcoming, and it still feels surreal that such a beautiful local bookstore hosted me. I’ve already reached out about possibly returning for an event after Small Town Slasher releases, even if it happens a few months later.\
\
I finished up my round of edits for I Wish I Was a Vampire and now it's with beta readers and my editor is also working on it. Small Town Slasher releases August 4, which is now only a few weeks away. I’ve finished final formatting, the acknowledgments, and an Author’s Note. I also spent an unreasonable amount of time fighting with Amazon over an ISBN trapped inside a draft listing. This is the kind of publishing work nobody sees, but it can eat an entire day while making you question every decision that led you there.\
\
There has been a lot of outreach happening behind the scenes too. I’ve been contacting bookstores throughout Washington and Oregon, pitching future author events andlooking into horror film and book programming. There have also been screener requests and attempts to get on the right PR lists.\
\
Events are challenging for me because I’m disabled and never know exactly how I will feel when the date arrives. That uncertainty is always there, even when I’m excited about an opportunity. The Village Books event gave me a little more confidence that I can find ways to make these things work without pretending they are easy.\
\
I also was invited to a TBRCon 2026 panel, “Problems with the Final Girl Trope.” I’ll get to talk about final girls who move beyond the usual stereotype, including disabled characters and stories that make room for more than one final girl. I’ve wanted to be part of TBRCon for a long time, so I’m very happy to be on this panel. I can't wait to share who I'm on the panel with. OMG! https://fanfiaddict.com/tbrcon2026/ It's free!\
\
The first Death by TBR Books novella open call is now up. I’m looking for horror novellas that use journal entries, documents, or other forms of mixed media as part of the story. The summer slasher submission call for the fourth Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night anthology is still open too.\
\
Work continues on the Yuletide horror anthology. The cover is looking incredible so far, but two invited contributors who had committed to the project had to withdraw. I’m disappointed, but there isn’t anything I can do except adjust and keep moving forward.\
\
I write these updates for everyone following along, but I also write them because my gremlins have a way of looking at a week like this and insisting I didn’t accomplish enough.\
\
That is obviously not true.\
\
I held my first in-person author event. I worked on two upcoming books while running a bookstore and press. I handled outreach, publishing problems, client work, submission calls, and all the smaller tasks that never make it into an announcement.\

It’s been another full week over here, and by full I mean I keep opening one project and somehow finding five more hiding underneath it.\
\
This week has been a lot of I Wish I Was a Vampire. I’ve been deep in edits for my middle grade Halloween horror book, and it still feels a little unreal that this is my middle grade debut. It’s spooky, funny, emotional, and very much for the kid who wanted to be scary instead of cute.\
\
Autumn Parker is eleven, obsessed with horror, and very tired of everyone trying to make her into something softer and sweeter than she feels. There are plastic vampire teeth, school costume problems, late 90s Halloween energy, trick-or-treating, and a girl who has to figure out what it means to be seen as herself. Here's the first line:\
\
Autumn Parker came downstairs wearing purple pajama pants, a black cape, an oversized t-shirt that fell to her knees with a pop star she loved on it, and her favorite vampire chompers.\
\
The schedule for this book is also starting to feel very real. I’m finishing my own edits, then it goes to my first reader, then beta readers. After that I’ll be working through beta feedback, and getting it ready for distribution. The release date is September 15th.\
\
I’ve also been working on Small Town Slasher, which releases August 4th. IN ONE MONTH! I will be finishing up formatting in the next few days. Small Town Slasher has had a long, weird road. I pulled it from NetGalley, tore it apart, rebuilt it, and learned a lot from the process. Mostly that I will be outlining from now.\
\
I’ve also been working on more outreach behind the scenes. School emails, bookstore emails, author visit possibilities, screener requests, PR box attempts, and event ideas but it's all challenging being disabled. I never know how I'm going to feel on the date of an event.\
\
I’m still working on the Yuletide Horror anthology too with some good and bad news. The cover is incredible so far but I'm a little bummed still because two of the people invited that committed had to back out. It's frustrating but I can't do anything about it.\
\
The next Death by TBR Books open call for a novella is coming later today! AND the summer slasher anthology submission call for the fourth Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night anthology is still open. \
\
These updates are for you but also for me and remind me that I am doing a lot and should be proud even though imposter syndrome and past influences impede that sometimes.\

It’s been another long, weird, exciting week over here, which seems to be the theme of my entire life at this point.\
\
Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night: Another Halloween Horror Anthology is officially out now, and I’m still in that strange post release fog where I’m excited, exhausted, grateful, and also wondering why my brain thinks we should immediately move on to the next thirteen things. A very normal and healthy system, clearly.\
\
Thank you so much to everyone who preordered, ordered, shared, posted, reviewed, or said anything kind about the anthology. Small press releases are a lot of work, and every single bit of support really does matter. I know I say that all the time, but it’s true. Books do not magically find readers. They need people screaming about them in the woods, or, more realistically, posting them online and leaving reviews.\
\
If you’ve read Twisted Tales 2 already, reviews are incredibly helpful. Even one sentence helps the book reach more readers, especially on places like Goodreads, Amazon, and StoryGraph.\
\
This week I’ve also been deep in I Wish I Was a Vampire, my upcoming middle grade Halloween horror book. This is my middle grade debut, which feels surreal in a different way than my adult horror books. It’s spooky and funny and full of plastic chompers, school costume drama, late 90s Halloween energy, and a girl who really does not want to be cute when she could be scary instead.\
\
I’m also sharing a sneak peek at the cover here first. 🖤\
\
\
\
I’m so excited about this cover because it feels exactly like the kind of book younger me would have grabbed immediately. Autumn Parker only wants one thing for Halloween: to be scary instead of cute. Unfortunately, once the vampire teeth come out, pretending starts to feel a little too real. I've spent 30+ hours and counting on the cover!\
\
This book has been really freeing to write, but also more emotional than I expected. Autumn is not me, haha just kidding, most of me is in there. I even base the school on the cover and layout in the book like my own elementary school. The kid who wanted to be understood. The kid who felt too weird, too much, too intense, too different. The kid who would have loved a spooky book that said one good best friend, one person who really sees you, can be enough.\
\
I’m also getting ready for Small Town Slasher, which releases August 4th. Woods Bay is my cursed little town full of slashers, local legends, old secrets, and supernatural problems no one should be solving after dark. Naturally, Jenna is going to try anyway. I'm doing my last round of edits.\
\
I also have my Village Books event coming up on July 9th at 6pm in Bellingham, so I’m trying to prepare for that. Nervous but excited.\
\
Behind the scenes, I’m still working on the Yuletide Horror anthology too. It is very weird to be editing holiday horror while it’s hot outside, but honestly, terrible weather, forced cheer, family tension, and people pretending everything is fine is always in season.\
\
The next Death by TBR Books open call for a novella is coming this summer, along with the summer slasher anthology open call for the 4th (4th?!) of Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night. I’m very excited and already a little scared of my inbox.\

I finished up the cover wrap and formatting for Small Town Slasher. I know some people read it and may never give this one a chance if they didn't like the first one but I'm glad it's now a novella AND part of a new series, Woods Bay. I didn't plan on the title being similar to a new show I hadn't heard about but oh well that might help! I'll be sending away for one copy to line edit the whole book one more time. I just announced the next anthology theme SLASHERS and it's great to see so many people excited about it! \
\
I've been attending StokerCon virtually since Thursday and have learned a lot and I'm grateful to have the opportunity to attend online. It still has a long way to go to be better for the virtual attendees but I'm grateful I can attend. It's my third year and I put time aside to attend virtually. I'm exhausted and will definitely have a whole separate post sharing what I've learned, a review and reflection of it if you will. \

I have recently started rewatching a lot of my favorite shows. For some I had started the series but never finished it. I thought I had seen all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer but I definitely hadn't. I watch some new shows but watching Buffy, The X-Files, Twin Peaks, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Daria, and more are keeping me sane right now. Nostalgic posters along with DVDs and VHS tapes are helping too. So here are 31 thoughts I had while rewatching season 1 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This show definitely is and will continue to influence my Woods Bay series including Small Town Slasher.\
\
01. The first pilot is better than the one they went with. It matches the film the show is based on way more.\
\
02. I will never skip this intro. It's still gold.\
\
03. I wish we had The Bronze in my town.\
\
04. I had the sunglasses Buffy has in The Harvest episode.\
\
05. Ahhh early Buffy and Angel moments.\
\
06. So that's where I got the idea of the high ponytail with a few loose strands in front of my face.\
\
07. Adorkable Willow and her computer.\
\
08. Love combining cheerleading with the first witch we meet on the show.\
\
09. I want Giles' car.\
\
10. Ahhh 1997 fashion. /chefskiss\
\
11. I love the idea of putting a spirit into a trophy. So cool!\
\
12. The library shots are done so well.\
\
13. Cheerleader on fire!\
\
14. Totally thought of Joe from You when I saw the cage in the library.\
\
15. It's such a great twist that the mother was the one evil not the cheerleader.\
\
16. Preying mantis sexy teacher.\
\
17. Ewwww the sandwich scene totally reminded me of the similar scene in The Girl Who Cried Monster by R.L. Stine.\
\
18. Even during my rewatch I was shocked by The Master.\
\
19. Xander acting like a hyena is awesome. It also makes me want to go to the zoo.\
\
20. One of the actresses from the Angel episode is in Dexter.\
\
21. The chemistry between Buffy and Angel. Oh my.\
\
22. The Willow and robot episode was just okay but fun cheesy.\
\
23. A dummy and the organs it wants to harvest.\
\
24. Worst nightmares coming true. That's terrifying. \
\
25. Hey it's the girl from The Faculty.\
\
26. Loved the dress she wore in the finale.\
\
27. Even though you know Buffy is going to be okay it's still horrible to watch her die.\
\
28. A short first season but still excellent.\
\
29. I feel bad that I totally forgot about Ms. Carpenter I love her.\
\
30. I think the white dress and leather jacket is a nod to the final showdown in the film.\
\
31. Not one skip of the intro or outro. EGH so good!!\

I’m so excited to share this here with you first.\
\
Our next Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night anthology theme is officially…\
\
🔪 SLASHERS. 🔪\
\
I’ll be announcing it soon on social media and in the monthly newsletter, but you get to know before everyone else because I love giving this little haunted corner the first peek.\
\
This collection will be all about slashers in every form. Classic masked killers, small-town massacres, camp carnage, final girls, revenge stories, suburban bloodshed, 90s and 2000s throwback vibes, weird slashers, psychological slashers, and stories that take the trope and carve something completely new into it.\
\
So I want to know:\
\
What kind of slashers do you love most?\
\
Are you into the masked killer stalking a sleepy town? The revenge slasher? The summer camp bloodbath? The final girl who refuses to stay in her assigned role? The killer with a creepy gimmick? The kind of slasher that feels fun until it suddenly feels very, very scary?\
\
Is there a specific trope, setting, or type of slasher you’d love to see in this collection?\
\
One of the things I really love about having this space is that paid members get to give feedback I actually take into consideration during the submission and selection process. I want this anthology to feel scary, fun, sharp, and bloody in all the best ways, so your thoughts genuinely help shape what I’ll be looking for.\
\
Also, a quick reminder that our second anthology releases in a little over a month! If you preorder, you’ll also receive the preorder exclusive sticker.\

This week has been a productive one, and it's really exciting to see the progress I've made on Death by TBR Books Press. The updated version of Small Town Slasher has been formatted. I will do one more pass on it before the publication date, but ePubs are now being sent out! One benefit of the FIRST VICTIM TIER (or higher) is digital ARCs! So if you sign up for it, you can receive an eARC of both Small Town Slasher and Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night: Another Halloween Horror Anthology. If you are already a member, just message or email me and I'll send it over.\
\
If you haven't heard, the third Twisted Tales is Yuletide Horror, and after making some changes and receiving more support, I was able to move the release date back to THIS November. That means the next anthology will have an open call, most likely this summer. I'll be sending out a separate email over the next few weeks asking FIRST VICTIM TIER (and higher) what subject they would be excited to see as an anthology. One of the perks of being part of a paid tier is being involved in publishing decisions. Vampires? Werewolves? Witches? Liminal Spaces? Slashers? There are so many options and ideas I have and I don't want to release one in an area that has already had an anthology recently.\
\
In between doing all of that I did find time to read and watch things.\

I recently finished a new draft of Small Town Slasher, which is now a novella. I’ve had some personal and medical challenges lately, but I’m hanging in there. 🖤\
\
Today I’m celebrating the first Wiccan Sabbat of 2026: Imbolc, the midpoint between winter and spring. And tonight we also have the Full Snow Moon.\
\
Imbolc honors the return of the light, creativity, new beginnings, and that quiet anticipation of growth. I’ve been seeing so many wonderful ideas online that I thought I’d share what I’ve been doing to prepare, and what I’m doing today.\
\
If you want more details on any of these, just comment the number and I’ll happily share more.\
\
IMBOLC \
\
01. Prepared my altar (see photo below)\
\
02. Full Snow Moon ritual\
\
03. Baked a cheesecake\
\
04. Winter workshop ritual\
\
05. Tarot spread: Imbolc Candle\
\
06. Tarot spread: Healing / Protection / Self-Care for Seeking Sanctuary\

07. Tarot spread: Full Snow Moon\
\
08. Fire release ritual\
\
09. Open window ritual\
\
10. Purification ritual\
\
11. Warm Milk Wishes ritual\
\
\
Since Imbolc and the Full Snow Moon are both about renewal, protection, and what we’re carrying forward, I’m also spending time with tarot today.\
\
I’m doing a few spreads for myself — and I’m opening a limited number of paid tarot readings for anyone who wants one while I’m in this energy.\
\
These are written readings delivered via email.\
\
Choose your reading: \
\
🕯️ Imbolc Spread (3 cards) – $15\
\
This focuses on what is beginning to awaken, what energy wants to grow stronger, and what is becoming clear.\
\
🛡️ February Sanctuary Reading (Healing/Protection/Self-Care) (9 cards) – $40\
\
For grounding and nervous system care: what you need, what you’re carrying, what supports you right now, and what to protect.\
\
🌕 Full Snow Moon Release (4 cards) – $25\
\
What to release, what’s being revealed, what’s shifting, and what comes next.\
\
How to claim one: \
\
Comment TAROT + which reading you want, or send me a DM with your question.\
\
I’ll confirm availability + send payment info.\
\
Spots are limited so I can keep these intentional and not overwhelm myself.\
\
(As always: tarot is for reflection and support — not medical/legal/financial advice.)\
\
🕯️🌕🖤 Good journey.\

Hi everyone and welcome to the first author interview featured on my Bindery!\
\
Happy Halloween!\
\
I had a fantastic time talking with Stephanie. She's been a friend of mine for a long time and I knew she would be the best VICTIM--I mean candidate for my first interview.\
\
Before I dive into our interview, I just wanted to highlight a few things about Stephanie!\
\
She's the proud owner of an online indie bookstore that you've probably seen me rave about time and time again-- DeathByTBRBooks.com . I do a huge amount of my book shopping on there.\
\
\
\
She's also a published author! Hiding Lies was her debut book. A fast-paced cat and mouse horror/thriller following a forensic photographer and the serial killer she's hunting. Her next novel Small Town Slasher debuts in March of '26! Her press Death By TBR Press released a fun Halloween Horror Anthology: Twisted Tales To Tell In The Night that she edited along with William Sterling. She also has a huge year coming up in 2026, which we will talk about in our interview!\
\
\
\
Now, let's dive into this FANGtastic interview!\
\
Use this first question as an introduction! Tell us your name and a little bit about yourself, your bookstore, etc...\
\
Here's my bio. :)\
\
Stephanie Rose is a disabled, neurodivergent, and queer horror writer and editor who finds comfort in the dark corners of storytelling. She is the author of Hiding Lies, Small Town Slasher, and Plastic Fangs: Essays, and serves as editor of the Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night anthology series. A lifelong Halloween devotee and unapologetic house goblin, she thrives on horror, true crime, and the delicious unease of the macabre. Music, especially dance and karaoke, keeps her heart beating just long enough to write another story. She lives in Washington with her partner and four cats.\
\
2026 looks like a huge year for you and your publishing company with Small Town Slasher, Twisted Tales To Tell In The Night (part 2), and Plastic Fangs. Not to mention you just announced Road Kill Revolution with TruBorn Press! Which book are you most excited to release?\
\
It really has been and I really can't believe all of this has happened. Last year at this time I was a debut author and expanding Death by TBR Books into a press as well as it being an indie bookshop for almost seven years is wild. I refuse to pick favorites. \
\
\
\
What I will say is that Small Town Slasher is the novel I've completed the longest ago so that makes it exciting to me because it feels the most tangible. I don't have a cover yet for TT2 and I haven't finished Roadkill Revolution Tour. \
\
What was your favorite short story from the Twisted Tales To Tell in the Night Halloween Horror Anthology? Mine was the Elvira inspired one Morgana Macabre's Halloween Special by Wendy Dalrymple.\
\
I loved the nostalgia of her story. Again I can't pick a favorite. I will say that I've had the most fun reading Booger Sugar by Clay McLeod Chapman aloud to my friends and family and my cats and Best Friends Forever b y Renee Thomasin has stayed with me the longest. Again though I love all of them for different reasons but if you threatened to take away Halloweens I'd say BFF is my favorite.\
\
Do you have a writing process? Any tips for any aspiring writers?\
\
I'm still figuring it out. I wrote Hiding Lies eight years ago and Small Town Slasher not even a year ago. Now that I write every day I'd say it depends on the project. I randomly outline some of the book and other times I write out scenes I definitely want in the book as I think of them. When I was writing STS I read and watched so many slashers because I wanted my writing to be cinematic. \
\
What or Who has been your biggest inspiration?\
\
Surviving my trauma. It wasn't one writer or person that inspired me. I was having a really rough time when I first moved to the PNW and no, not due to the rain. I actually have reverse seasonal affective disorder. It was all of the people and I felt like I couldn't breathe. I suffer from a number of disabilities and agoraphobia, social phobia, anxiety, and CPTSD are a few of them. I wanted to write a novel as a bucket list item. I submitted it to a lot of agents and after the rejections reached the 100s I pursued my second Master's Degree in Information and Library Sciences. After the election I was getting bad again and I channeled all of my intrusive thoughts and rage into murdering a lot of people on the page. It was then I realized I had to write to live. \
\
What can you tell us about Roadkill Revolution Tour?\
\
It's about a trio of pop icons combine a setlist of their club classics for an electrifying U.S. tour that doubles as an underground resistance dismantling a fascist regime one hard hitting mayhem filled performance at a time, think KPop Demonhunters meets Manhunt. There are three Easter eggs in the previous sentence to identify the three singers influenced the fictional characters in the book. I'm writing it now. A lot of the book is current and past research on the current administration and working in real events that have happened. I'm no Atwood but I'd like to hope this story will give people an idea of how bad things are and how bad they can or will get by the time this book is released.\
\
Are you working on any other projects at the moment?\
\
I'm currently doing my final round of edits on Small Town Slasher, editing and formatting TT2 and will be going through submissions for T wisted Tales to Tell in the Night: A Yuletide Horror Anthology by the end of December. After that it's getting back to a few projects. I have a lot of ideas but will also be working on essays for my first essay collection at that time. I have no idea which project I will pick back up or start fresh with in January. Also, working on a few flash fiction stories for one of my Patreon Vampire Tier.\
\
What is your favorite scary movie? What's a horror movie that scared you the most? Your go to Halloween movie?\
\
Scream or more like the Scream franchise will always be my favorite. When I first watched it I was babysitting home alone. By the end of the movie I had checked the locks of the doors and windows and had a butcher knife next to me. The horror movie that scared me the most was The Blair Witch Project because when I went to go see it I was part of the advanced screening group that didn't know all of the footage was filmed not found. More recently I'd say the film Civil War because we're living in it now and it's terrifying. My go to Halloween movie is probably a double feature of Halloween H20 and Hubie Halloween. I can't choose even two without also stating that I watch a Halloween film or themed episode every day of October. \
\
Do you have any fun Halloween traditions?\
\
I watch something Halloween themed every day of October. On the actual day I usually have mac and cheese or pizza and go trick-or-treating. I go for about an hour and then head home. I watch the Bob's Burgers "Full Bars" episode and either Halloween, Halloween H20, or Halloween Kills, and do a Samhain ritual.\
\
What is your favorite horror book? Scariest?\
\
SOME of my favorites are Maeve Fly by CJ Leede, So Thirsty by Rachel Harrison, Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw, and Victorian Psycho by Virginia Feito. SOME of the scariest are Rest Stop by Nat Cassidy (gave me one of my only jump scares from a book), House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski (after I read it I refused to own it for a few years), and Come Closer by Sara Gran.\
\
Any Halloween-themed books you want to recommend to our readers?\
\
Well obviously I have to recommend Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night: A Halloween Horror Anthology AND the next installment Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night: Another Halloween Horror Anthology. The Halloween Store by Ronald Kelly, The Haunted Mask by R.L. Stine, and We Bleed Orange and Black by Jeff C. Carter. \
\
Favorite Halloween song?\
\
Here's my Tidal playlist: https://tidal.com/playlist/0d5a5fa2-b946-43ae-80a5-fcb31df3196e \
\
And ending on an unlucky thirteen, what is your favorite Halloween candy?\
\
Unlucky? You mean my favorite number. ;) It really is my favorite. I am mostly doing "top" instead of "favorite" in general because it's too damn hard to choose. I'd say Snickers Peanut Butter, Almond Joy, and Butterfinger.\
\
Again I want to thank Stephanie for agreeing to do this interview!\
