DELUXE EDITION—the hardcover edition of The Red Winter features beautiful red sprayed edges!
A devastating love story. A bewitching twist on history. A blood-drenched hunt for purpose, power, and redemption.
In 1785, Professor Sebastian Grave receives the news he fears most: the terrible Beast of Gevaudan has returned, and the French countryside runs red in its wake. Sebastian knows the Beast. A monster-slayer with centuries of experience, he joined the hunt for the creature twenty years ago and watched it slaughter its way through a long and bloody winter. Even with the help of his indwelling demon, Sarmodel—who takes payment in living hearts—it nearly cost him his life to bring the monster down.
Now, two decades later, Sebastian has been recalled to the hunt by Antoine Avenel d’Ocerne, an estranged lover who shares a dark history with the Beast and a terrible secret with Sebastian. Drawn by both the chance to finish the Beast for good and the promise of a reconciliation with Antoine, Sebastian cannot refuse.
But Gevaudan is not as he remembers it, and Sebastian’s unfinished business is everywhere he looks. Years of misery have driven the people to desperation, and France teeters on the edge of revolution. Sebastian’s arcane activities—not to mention his demonic counterpart—have also attracted the inquisitorial eye of the French clergy. And the Beast is poised to close his jaws around them all and plunge the continent into war.
Debut author Cameron Sullivan tears the heart out of history with this darkly entertaining retelling of the hunt for the Beast of Gevaudan. Lifting the veil on the hidden world behind our own, it reimagines the story of Europe, from Imperial Rome to Saint Jehanne d’Arc, the madness of Gilles de Rais and the first flickers of the French Revolution.
“Charming, haunting, ambitious, and a great deal of fun.” —T. Kingfisher, New York Times bestselling author of A Sorceress Comes to Call
“So bloody good. The Red Winter is absolute ripper entertainment—miss it at your peril!” —Shelley Parker-Chan, bestselling author of She Who Became the Sun
“A gorgeous tangle of history and fresh-made myth, The Red Winter is my platonic ideal of a debut: the moment I was done, I went looking for Sullivan's backlog and let out an actual howl of despair upon realizing there was nothing yet. You'll eat this one up.” —Cassandra Khaw, bestselling author of Nothing But Blackened Teeth

\
THE RED WINTER by CAMERON SULLIVAN (historical fantasy)\
\
Progress: Finished\
\
I finished the Fiction Sickos Book Club April pick, huzzah! Overall this was worth the price of admission and a very impressive debut. I agree with the other Sickos that the end did feel rushed, and I had some minor issues with the pacing and lack of depth for certain elements, but I'd still put it in the 3.75 star range with a "yes" recommendation that escalates to "very much yes" for fans of Christopher Buehlman and the like.\
\
TOKYO UENO STATION by YU MIRI (contemporary literature, fiction)\
\
Progress: Finished\
\
A flat 3-star rating for me is typically something that I finished that I somewhat enjoyed and will probably never think of again. I also rate short novels/novellas on a slightly tougher scale unless they blow me away, then I'll give credit where credit is due for accomplishing so much in so little words.\
\
Anyway, this story about a ghost who is looking back on his invisible life did some things well, some others not so well, and lands at a 3.00 for me. I don't regret throwing it in the mix, and the promise of "devastation" may hit you better than it did me, but I wouldn't recommend it with my whole ass.\
\
GAMES WITHOUT RULES: THE OFTEN INTERRUPTED HISTORY OF AFGHANISTAN by TAMIM ANSARY (narrative historical nonfiction)\
\
Progress: 219/350\
\
The last chapter covers Gorbachev's attempt to copy Nixon's Vietnam exit strategy of "peace with honor", resulting in the bloodiest year of The Soviet-Afghan War with zero benefit to anybody, expect the Mujahideen who were receiving a billion dollars a year from the United States.\
\
Ansary either confuses the timeline re: the development of the Stinger or is alluding to the improved FIM-92B but I this a typical drawback of sweeping, popular history books. Either way, Stingers that cost ~$40,000 for the United States to make were regularly knocking out ~$10M helicopter gunships with crazy efficiency in the hands of the Afghans. And then yada yada yada the Soviet Union pulls out and collapses.\
\
Trying to finish this by tomorrow and, noted issues aside, it's still super solid.\
\
The rest...\
\
I'm not far enough in to comment on either but I did start two others, Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid and Dallergut Dream Department Store by Miye Lee. I was looking for shorter books to keep me going while I mostly stayed glued on reading manuscripts (more on that below).\
\
PREVIEW\
\
Once I finish my nonfiction read I believe I'm going to pick up Puerto Rico: A National History by Jorell A. Meléndez-Badillo, but that could change a dozen times between now and then. I think I'm set on fiction but if I finish what I'm working on by the weekend I'm thinking of picking up We Do Not Part by Han Kang. Kang's The Vegetarian and Human Acts are both remarkable, and while Greek Lessons didn't hit for me, I trust Kang to deliver.\
\
PUBLISHING IMPRINT NEWS\
\
I have to coordinate with the Bindery team but I do believe I've found a manuscript that I would love to acquire. Can't really say anything yet but I'm stoked as hell and will update you with more when I can. In the meantime I'll still be poking around pitches and other manuscripts, just not as aggressively as I have been for the past month.\

GAMES WITHOUT RULES: THE OFTEN INTERRUPTED HISTORY OF AFGHANISTAN by TAMIM ANSARY (narrative historical nonfiction)\
\
Progress: 127/350\
\
Only got to two chapters of this and we're now firmly in the 20th century with Amanullah attempting to transform and modernize Afghanistan. How does that work out for him? Let's find out this week, hopefully (probably not great though as Ch 14 is titled "Things Fall Apart").\
\
THE RED WINTER by CAMERON SULLIVAN (historical fantasy)\
\
Progress: 354/531\
\
Took a solid chunk out of the Fiction Sickos April selection, and aside from some minor gripes this is hitting pretty well. This is the type of horror, blended with historical fantasy, that appeals to me and would likely appeal to fans of Christopher Buehlman (especially if you love Between Two Fires and/or The Blacktongue Thief).\
\
TOKYO UENO STATION by YU MIRI (contemporary literature, fiction)\
\
Progress: 120/180\
\
This is a ghost sotry about a man who was basically invisible his entire life, including to his own family. Not mind-blowing so far but solid execution and hits some bleak notes well. I'm straight eyeball reading this and their are some parts where you pick up the conversations of nearby folk (not unlike The Spear Cuts Through Water) so I'd warn against doing this as audio only as I'm sure that would be confusing and difficult to track, but I could be wrong.\
\
PREVIEW\
\
Finishing the books I'm working on is the secondary focus, the main being continuing to read through some manuscripts submitted to our publishing imprint. There is one that I'm really enjoying and I plan on reading at least 100 pages more of that today. Hopefully it can stick the landing as it's a serious contender for a potential second acquisition. I wish I could say more but I gotta keep all that under wraps for now but stay tuned! Also I may continue on with more Berserk if I need a manga fix.\

Took down four eps of this throughout the week and I'm continually impressed by how it's able to deliver payoffs in a variety of ways. Of the recent stretch I'd say episodes 10 and 14(!) were the high points and it seems we're moving onto a new arc now. Will continue slow burning the slow burn.\
\
PEAKY BLINDERS - NETFLIX\
\
Progress: S2E5\
\
Only took down one ep of this because I prioritized author things so not much new to report here. Has anybody seen the new movie? The reviews seem solid enough but I'd appreciate some (spoiler-free) thoughts from ya if you've seen it.\

\
OTHER RANDOM STUFF\
\
Got a hand tattoo of a Fallout "mini nuke" on Friday that is still nice and angry today but the swelling is starting to subside. Thrilled with how it came out and it will look even better once it fully heals. In the pic the yellow/orange colors look a little muddied because of bruising/plasma/bleeding but that's no surprise with the beating it took. The swelling also makes the nuke head look wavy but that's all good now. Also, I would not recommend sitting 5 hours for a hand tattoo. The first few hours are tolerable but the further you get from the center the rougher it gets and it turns the last two hours into pure God-seeing hell.\
\
\
\
That unfortunately means I have to put a hold on climbing until probably Saturday, which is a shame because I started f'n around on a V5 and came crazy close on the finishing move multiple times. I will likely need a low intensity session to feel right before trying to send it again another day and I just hope it's not reset in that span because it would be my first V5.\

REVIEW\
\
A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS by GEORGE RR MARTIN (fantasy)\
\
Progress: Finished\
\
Our March Fiction Sickos Book Club pick did not disappoint! This is a rare case where I enjoyed watching the show first as it helped my brain movies for the first short story that S1 was based on. I also think the show made solid choices with what it altered or expanded upon (looking at you, Lyonel Baratheon, you minx). Will probably fall somewhere around 3.75-4 stars with the first short story being the strongest.\
\
HOW TO HOLD SOMEONE IN YOUR HEART by MIZUKU TSUJIMURA (contemporary fantasy/magical realism)\
\
#2 in “The Lost Souls Series”\
\
Progress: Finished\
\
A bit underwhelming after Lost Souls Meet Under a Full Moon and I'll stick to the opinion that it might not have been necessary. Still had some high points but there were a couple chapters that either didn't live up to the potential of their premise or were somewhat uninteresting.\
\
THE EYES OF GAZA: A DIARY OF RESILIENCE by PLESTIA ALAQAD (nonfiction memoir)\
\
Progress: Finished\
\
Phew! I'll talk more about this one soon because it's a harrowing read. The “Diary” in the subtitle isn't a metaphor or a stylistic label, it’s literal. It's a quick but powerful book taking real entries that's devoid of any flowery language and full of thought-provoking, raw sentiments.\
\
GAMES WITHOUT RULES: THE OFTEN INTERRUPTED HISTORY OF AFGHANISTAN by TAMIM ANSARY (narrative historical nonfiction)\
\
Progress: 101/350\
\
Didn't make much of a dent in this but am now transitioning into the 20th century after Abdu'Rahman "set the parameters of a struggle in Afghanistan" between forward and backward-looking elements, which had "profound consequences not just for Afghanistan itself but for attempts by foreign powers to intervene in the affairs of the country over the next century".\

Good afternoon, Sickos! Got a couple things for ya today. First up, the April polls for the Fiction and History Sickos Book Clubs are closed and we have our winners.\
\
FICTION SICKOS\
\
The Red Winter by Cameron Sullivan\
\
From my understanding, this is a dark historical fantasy and horror novel that reimagines the Beast of Gévaudan in 18th-century France. The story follows an immortal magician and monster hunter who shares his body with a heart-eating demon.\
\
Just based on the summary, this is the type of book I'd love to publish through Kist Reads so I'm excited about this one.\
\
HISTORY SICKOS\
\
All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror by Stephen Kinzer\
\
"...brings to life the 1953 CIA coup in Iran that ousted the country’s elected prime minister and features a brand new preface by the author on the folly of attacking Iran."\
\
I've read this a couple times now and included it because it's quite timely for obvious reasons. It's not a THICC BOI, it's very accessible, and it's a great introduction to why relations between the United States and Iran are the way they are in modern times.\
\
To participate in the book discussions, your membership needs to be at the Sicko or above tier and you'll need to be connected to the Sickos Discord server, which is where the forums live. Once you have Discord you can go to your Account Settings here and sync up. I'll have the forums posted on 4/1!\
\
The Importance of Pre-Orders...\
\
If you want to support the Kist Reads imprint and our amazing debut author S.V. Lockwood so we can continue to publish books in the future, one of the most important thing you can do is pre-order. Buying A Complement of Scoundrels by S.V. Lockwood before it comes out sends a major signal to bookstores that they should stock it on their shelves. It comes down to basic supply and demand, and the pre-order numbers provide book chains with an idea of what the demand will be like. This doesn't just apply to our book, but all books, so keep that in mind when it comes to authors you love in the future!\
\
Until tomorrow (3/26), Barnes & Noble is running a 25% discount for pre-orders with code: PREORDER25(available to their Premium & Rewards Members*). So if you haven't locked in your copy of A Complement of Scoundrels yet, this is the perfect opportunity to save a little dough and support the imprint and our author. Either way, your subscription fees helped get this thing off the ground to begin with so I appreciate you! And for those asking, yes, I should be able to share news about the audiobook format of this soon!\

What is Indie Next + My Current Reading Priorities
These are my current reading priorities. As a bookseller, I am always reading on a deadline and sometimes that deadline does not work out in my favor.
I love participating in the indie next program, which is a way for booksellers to highlight upcoming books they love through a nomination based system. Indie Next nominations are especially important for debut authors, as it can prove to publishers that investment in these authors and titles is “worth it”.
Participation in the program means I’m reading 2-3 months ahead of publication schedules and prioritizing this schedule makes it hard for me to work in backlist, book club, and personal reading into my schedule. I’m packing for a weekend trip to the beach and trying to balance these books with some of the TBR titles I was hoping to take with me as well.
I guess this is what happens when you make your passion your job, but it’s worth it for the ability to impact the industry for good.
