#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of _The Martian_, a lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster in this “propulsive” (Entertainment Weekly), cinematic thriller full of suspense, humor, and fascinating science—in development as a major motion picture starring Ryan Gosling.

HUGO AWARD FINALIST • ONE OF THE YEAR’S BEST BOOKS: Bill Gates, GatesNotes, New York Public Library, Parade, Newsweek, Polygon, Shelf Awareness, She Reads, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal •

> “An epic story of redemption, discovery and cool speculative sci-fi.”—USA Today.

> “If you loved _The Martian_, you’ll go crazy for Weir’s latest.”—The Washington Post.

**Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.** Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species. And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone. Or does he?

**An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver, _Project Hail Mary_ is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival _The Martian_—while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.**

[Hi friends! Time to start wrapping up the 117 days that was January (at least parts of it felt that way!) and plan for February.\\
\\
First, let's talk Book Club:\\
\\
- For our Book Club read of Lies of Locke Lamora, we are going to have a wrap up discussion this Saturday, January 31 at 8 PM EST (New York City time) on Discord. If you are interested, swing on by. Pop in, pop out, whatever. I can also see about recording it for anyone who misses it, but can't guarantee that at this point given this will be my first attempt at setting one of these up on Discord, and would need to make sure participants are cool with that.\\
\\
- For the February read of Project Hail Mary, discussion channels are all set up on the Discord server, so head on over once you get reading! We had some amazing discussion for LoLL, and the format seemed to work really well. Remember if you want to order any of our book club books, you can click them on one of my bookshelves here on Bindery and order through Amazon or Bookshop, or you can check out my bookshop.org affiliate page (link on the main page here). \\
\\
\\
Next, let's talk Monthly Challenges:\\
\\
- For our January "Find the Time" challenge, we've done our time audits, came up with a plan to read more, picked a book, and now we're implementing our plan. I'll be putting a post up in Discord for folks to chat about issues or how it went!\\
\\
- If you want to be eligible for the monthly $25 bookshop.org gift card prize for January, you need to comment on this post or the Discord post with your overall impressions from your time audit, what you read in January, and what your plan was to incorporate more reading in your life!\\
\\
- For February, the challenge is "read every day." I'm going to run that in StoryGrapgh. It does not matter how much you read or listen, as long as you log a minute of listening or a page of reading each day, that counts! I am going to run it out of StoryGrapgh, and you can sign up here! As with the January challenge, participants will be entered for a random drawing for a $25 bookshop.org gift card at the end of the month. All the details will be on the page through the link. \\

Discord will be set up with chapter channels and spoiler alerts so you can talk details to your heart's content, and we will have an optional video call at the end of each month for anyone that wants to chat. \\
\\

[One of my favorite things about science fiction is how broad the genre really is.\\
\\
Some books are essentially space operas with incredible adventures and unforgettable characters. Others use futuristic settings to explore philosophy or politics. Some barely explain how anything works at all.\\
\\
And then there's hard sci-fi.\\
\\
This is the part of science fiction that looks at the laws of physics and says, "Okay...but what if we actually followed them?"\\
\\
Hard sci-fi doesn't ask you to suspend disbelief quite as much. Instead, it invites you to believe that everything you're reading could happen if humanity had just a little more time, a little better engineering, or one more scientific breakthrough.\\
\\
That's what makes the genre so fascinating.\\
\\
**🚀 What Is Hard Sci-Fi?** \\
\\
Hard sci-fi is science fiction that's grounded in real science. Physics, astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering: these are the foundation the entire plot is built on.\\
\\
That doesn't mean every prediction ends up being correct. Science evolves all the time. What matters is that the author is trying to build a story that plays by the rules of the universe as we currently understand them.\\
\\
Instead of asking readers to simply accept impossible technology, hard sci-fi asks: _"If this were possible...how would it actually work?"_\\
\\
**🔬 Why Readers Love It** \\
\\
Hard sci-fi scratches a very specific itch. It's for readers who love solving puzzles alongside the characters and who get excited when an author explains orbital mechanics, genetics, artificial intelligence, or quantum physics without talking down to them.\\
\\
The science isn't there to slow the story down. The science _is_ the story.\\
\\
Some of the most satisfying moments in hard sci-fi happen when a seemingly impossible problem is solved not through magic or luck, but through logic, creativity, and a deep understanding of how the universe works.\\
\\
There's something incredibly rewarding about watching intelligence become the hero.\\
\\
**🌌 Wonder Without Magic** \\
\\
One misconception about hard sci-fi is that it's cold or emotionless. The opposite is often true.\\
\\
Many of these novels create a profound sense of wonder because the universe itself is already astonishing.\\
\\
- The scale of space.\\
\\
- The fragility of human life.\\
\\
- The complexity of evolution.\\
\\
- The mathematics hidden inside nature.\\
\\
\\
Hard sci-fi reminds us that reality is already pretty incredible. Sometimes you don't need to invent impossible worlds; the real one is fascinating enough.\\
\\
**🛰️ Why It Feels Different** \\
\\
Most science fiction begins with a fantastic idea and asks readers to go along for the ride.\\
\\
Hard sci-fi starts with reality:\\
\\
- Every challenge has constraints.\\
\\
- Fuel matters.\\
\\
- Distance matters.\\
\\
- Gravity matters.\\
\\
- Time matters.\\
\\
- Communication delays matter.\\
\\
\\
Those limitations create a different kind of tension because there isn't always a convenient piece of technology waiting to save everyone.\\
\\
The characters have to think their way out. That's one reason engineers, scientists, and readers who love problem-solving are often drawn to the genre.\\
\\
**📖 If You Usually Read Other Genres...** \\
\\
One of the biggest myths about hard sci-fi is that you need a science degree to enjoy it.\\
\\
You don't; there are plenty of fantastic entry points depending on what you already love reading.\\
\\
****🚀 Space Opera Readers**** \\
\\
Start with: _Project Hail Mary_ by Andy Weir\\
\\
If you love stories set in space but want a little more scientific realism, this is one of the best bridges into hard sci-fi. It balances accessible science with humor, heart, and one of my favorite friendships in modern science fiction.\\
\\
****👽 First Contact Readers**** \\
\\
Start with **:** _Rendezvous with Rama_ by Arthur C. Clarke\\
\\
Instead of focusing on alien conflict, Clarke builds suspense through exploration and discovery. The mystery comes from trying to understand something truly unknown.\\
\\
****🌍 Climate Fiction Readers**** \\
\\
Start with **:** _The Ministry for the Future_ by Kim Stanley Robinson\\
\\
This is less about space travel and more about the future of Earth. Robinson combines climate science, politics, economics, and technology to imagine one possible path forward.\\
\\
****🔍 Thriller Readers**** \\
\\
Start with: _The Martian_ by Andy Weir\\
\\
The tension in this novel is all about surviving Mars using nothing but science, engineering, and stubborn determination.\\
\\
 **📚 Beginner Pick** \\
\\
**Project Hail Mary** by Andy Weir\\
\\
This is the book I recommend to almost everyone who's curious about hard sci-fi.\\
\\
Why it works:\\
\\
- approachable scientific explanations\\
\\
- unforgettable characters\\
\\
- constant problem-solving\\
\\
- balances big ideas with humor and heart\\
\\
\\
It proves that scientifically accurate doesn't have to mean difficult.\\
\\
 **📚 Advanced Pick** \\
\\
**Dragon's Egg** by Robert L. Forward\\
\\
If you want to experience what hard sci-fi can do at its most ambitious, this is a fantastic next step.\\
\\
Why it works:\\
\\
- one of the most imaginative uses of real physics I've ever encountered\\
\\
- explores life evolving under extreme conditions\\
\\
- rewards readers who love big scientific ideas\\
\\
- constantly challenges the way we think about intelligence and civilization\\
\\
\\
This is the kind of book that changes the way you look at the universe.\\
\\
**🌙 Final Thoughts** \\
\\
I think hard sci-fi reminds us that reality is often stranger than fiction.\\
\\
The universe already contains black holes, neutron stars, quantum mechanics, evolutionary miracles, and galaxies so large our brains struggle to comprehend them.\\
\\
Hard sci-fi simply asks what happens if we stop treating those ideas like background information and let them become the adventure.\\
\\
If you've always been curious about science fiction but worried it would feel too technical, I'd encourage you to start with one of the beginner-friendly books.](https://judgingbythecover.binderybooks.com/item/LNPYpzNcHnF2f4CmujCn/)

[Hello Cozy Family!\\
\\
It's been a long time since I thought about creating an official top 10 ranking, so I figured I would give it a shot. It was much harder than I expected!! And I'm currently reading a book that I know will be high in my top 10 after finishing, but the idea of removing any of the mentioned books below from the ranking physically hurts aha.\\
\\
I might have to start doing re-rankings every other month if my reading keeps being as top tier as it has been so far this year! A brilliant struggle to have!\\
\\
**What would be in your top 10 list? Please do share all the incredible books that could very well uproot all of our rankings!**\\
\\
Without further ado, here is my (current) official top 10 books:\\
\\
01. For Whom the Belle Tolls\\
    \\
02. A Court of Silver Flames\\
    \\
03. Judgement Road\\
    \\
04. House of Earth and Blood\\
    \\
05. Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands\\
    \\
06. Project Hail Mary\\
    \\
07. On the Same Page\\
    \\
08. Heir of Fire\\
    \\
09. The Phoenix Keeper\\
    \\
10. The Unmaking of June Farrow\\
    \\
\\
Honourable mentions (because I couldn't just list 10 when these were so close to making the cut):\\
\\
- The Atlas Six\\
\\
- Broken Bonds\\
\\
- A Discovery of Witches\\
\\
- Heroes of Olympus\\
\\
- Uprooted\\
\\
- Wisteria\\
\\
\\
The book I'm currently reading that I KNOW will disrupt my current top 10 is Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid! Just wow! But as I haven't finished it yet, it feels wrong to add it to my official ranking just yet.\\
\\
The same goes for The Women by Kristin Hannah, which I always tell everyone is one of my favourite books of all time, and yet I haven't technically finished it... It was destroying me too much and I had to pause due to personal circumstances at the time. That was 2 years ago lol. I do plan to finish it, and I know it will then rule over my top 10 list, but until I'm ready to be emotionally destroyed by the ending, I'm putting it off. I want to finish it this year though, so it should be in my ranking by the end of 2026, fingers crossed!](https://charlottescozycorner.binderybooks.com/item/GJMRFwtnzbI0a7a4McgN/)

[Heya! The March polls are up for the History/Fiction Sickos Book Clubs, you can go vote on them in the appropriate **Discord channels** (scroll down a bit and you'll see #fiction-vote and #history-vote). The polls stay open for 72 hours and were posted late last night so you've got some time to coerce and bribe fellow members to sway to the vote in your favorite.\\
\\
Not seeing the channels?! Make sure you've linked your **Bindery subscription** to Discord via the Account Settings page. Also, those channels unlock at the Sicko plus paid tiers, so if you're a "Follower", you'll need to upgrade to get the goods. Along with the book club forums you also get access to a load of other channels for various genres, book recommendation requests, movies/TV, and a bunch more. We've also set up buddy read forums for our Russian literature reads, Discworld, Malazan, Red Rising, John Gwynne, Robin Hobb, The Hunger Games, 11.22.63 and A Complement of Scoundrels!\\
\\
As for the options, these are the 8 books across the 2 clubs that we're voting on.\\
\\
**FICTION SICKOS**\\
\\
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir\\
\\
Human Acts by Han Kang\\
\\
Book Lovers by Emily Henry\\
\\
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George RR Martin\\
\\
**HISTORY SICKOS**\\
\\
A Rome of One’s Own by Emma Southon\\
\\
The End is Always Near by Dan Carlin\\
\\
Africa is Not a Country by Dipo Faloyin\\
\\
Destiny Disrupted by Tamim Ansary\\
\\
**TikTok Exlpainer Video**\\
\\
**Instragram Explainer Video**\\
\\
I've already read all of these, with the exception of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, so they've all got my seal of approval. The reason for this is we are on the hunt for the second manuscript edition for our publishing imprint to acquire. Last year the process was crazy quick as **A Complement of Scoundrels by S.V. Lockwood** jumped out to me right away during Bindery's Pitch Fest, where unagented authors can submit their novels for consideration. I'm hoping to have the same luck this year, but I need to make sure I've got the mental space for it if it takes a bit longer. All of your support goes towards making this possible as a big chunk of the subscription revenue goes into making an offer and hiring the editing team, artist and so on and so forth, so thank you for making all of this happen!\\
\\
I will still be participating in the book club discussions though, especially the History Sickos since all four of those books I've highlighted to hell and back so I've got plenty to share.\\
\\
Last thing to note is I've got another book giveaway happening in the next couple weeks so keep an eye out for that. Alright, enough babbling, get to voting!\\

[Hello and happy new year,\\
\\
I hope you’re all doing well! This isn’t a long post but I was too excited not to make this. \\
\\
\\
\\
Bindery has a new feature where you can request a specific title and it comes straight to me with a cute little postcard. I had no idea this feature came out (i was very much on vacation and not looking at my email for most of December, keep an eye out for my next newsletter for more there) or I would have already answered them. If you sent in a request, the recs are below !\\
\\
As a former bookseller, I genuinely miss recommending randomly specific titles and it’s quite fun racking my brain for book knowledge, especially great when we find the right one. This is a beta feature so I’m not sure yet the best way to answer these. I can either do it as a post here on Bindery, or on ig stories, let me know which way you prefer!\\
\\
Now onto the recs:\\
\\
The first request was from Ezra who asked for: **a banger that is also a book club crowd pleaser.**\\
\\
\\
\\
A social media account was not tagged so hopefully you see this one. I have a scifi and fantasy recommendation:\\
\\
_Project Hail Mary: A Novel by Andy Weir_\\
\\
This one is going to be adapted later this year and from everything I hear it’s a very good pick for a book club. It follows Ryland Grace, the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish. While I haven’t personally read this, my sister’s book club (that heavily reads scifi and fantasy) said this one was a great pick! \\
\\
_A Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez:_\\
\\
My pick is definitely this standalone fantasy which follows Jun, a guard that is full of regret of his past decisions, and Keema, an outcast that is fighting for identity and self-value. The pair end up aiding and abetting the escape of a god that has been locked under a palace for centuries and used for her abilities and magic by her own family. The ruling family consists of an emperor and his three murderous sons who have used the god’s abilities to rule with cruelty for centuries and bleed the land of resources as they oppress their citizenry. Jun and Keema end up on an adventure with this god that changes the course of power in the land and those who wield it. It’s written with such stunning prose and imagery, the descriptions alone are enough to make this a great discussion book. This was my favorite read of 2024 and genuinely the most talked about book that my club and I chose to read. There is so much action and heart packed into it, I think it definitely fits the criteria. \\
\\
The second request was from Kaith. ig: (@kaithisms)\\
\\
\\
\\
First of all, thank you for watching! I have quite a few recs I hope one of these stand out. I would be remiss not to mention the one that inspired the video to begin with which was of course:\\
\\
_Everything for Everyone: An Oral History of the New York Commune, 2052–2072_\\
\\
This is one of the most unique scifi books I’ve read, as it imagines a word beyond the apocalyptic style, dystopian narrative we have been fed for decades. Written from the perspective of two activists that come from labor organizing, activist work, and trans rights organizing we are getting the perspective of two powerful voices in M.E. O’Brien and Eman Abdelhadi. The novel is done in an oral history style as the title suggests, interviewing young and old people who all belong to different communes across the post-capitalist version of the U.S. This book offers a glimpse into a possibility after violence. A future that has gone through war and famine and the breaking down of systems, and asks, okay so what do we build up from the rubble? What skills can we offer each other tangibly? How do we see our relationships, our living structures, and our society as a whole and where do we need improvement? All of that and more is explored in this book and in my opinion, it feels like a novel that is in direct conversation with us, people experiencing the mid 2020s and all the horrors that have gotten us to this point. Can we imagine a future that doesn’t constantly beget violence? Are there sustainable systems we can start building the framework for now? What kind of life do we want and what are willing to do to get it? I can not recommend this book enough. It remains one of my favorite scifi novels I’ve ever read. \\
\\
_Love After the End: An Anthology of Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Speculative Fiction by Joshua Whitehead_\\
\\
This anthology collection showcases a number of new 2SQ (2 spirit and queer indigenous) writers that each come up with their own utopian narratives that detail the strength of indigiqueer stories through their plight in the maw of settler colonialism’s histories. It has been at the top of my tbr for a while, I definitely think this collection will hold a few gems. \\
\\
_Thyme Travelers edited by Sonia Sulaiman_\\
\\
This anthology is completely unique, coming from the perspective of Palestinian diaspora writers and artists that image a future beyond occupation and the devastating effects of imperialism and zionism. Each story in this collection explores different aspects of the future from analyzing the effects of what dehumanization does over the years, to using robotics to imagine uses for disabled Palestinians, to exploring gender identity and queerness. I highly recommend it to everyone interested in post colonialism as a subject and as a broad topic of study. \\
\\
I hope these were fun (I had a great time putting them together) and you found something new to read. If you have any more requests, please send them in! \\

**_Paladin’s Grace_ by T. Kingfisher**\\
\\
Genre: Fantasy Romance\\
\\
Blurb: _Stephen's god died on the longest day of the year._ Three years later, Stephen is a broken paladin, living only for the chance to be useful before he dies. But all that changes when he encounters a fugitive named Grace in an alley and witnesses an assassination attempt gone wrong. Now the pair must navigate a web of treachery, beset on all sides by spies and poisoners, while a cryptic killer stalks one step behind. Paladin’s Grace is saga of murder, magic, and love on the far side of despair.\\
\\
**_Katabasis_ by R.F. Kuang**\\
\\
Genre: Dark Academia/Fantasy\\
\\
Blurb: _Two graduate students must set aside their rivalry and journey to Hell to save their professor’s soul, perhaps at the cost of their own._ Alice Law has only ever had one goal: to become one of the brightest minds in the field of Magick. She has sacrificed everything to make that a reality—her pride, her health, her love life, and most definitely her sanity. All to work with Professor Jacob Grimes at Cambridge, the greatest magician in the world—that is, until he dies in a magical accident that could possibly be her fault. Grimes is now in Hell, and she’s going in after him. Because his recommendation could hold her very future in his now incorporeal hands, and even death is not going to stop the pursuit of her dreams. Nor will the fact that her rival, Peter Murdoch, has come to the same conclusion.\\
\\
**_Project Hail Mary_ by Andy Weir**\\
\\
Genre: Science Fiction\\
\\
Blurb: _A lone astronaut. An impossible mission. An ally he never imagined._ Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. Or does he?\\

[I can’t believe another month has come and gone - time is really flying! Here are my thoughts on the 9 books I read in July:\\
\\
****My Top 3 of the Month**** \\
\\
⭐ 4.50 - Project Hail Mary (Andy Weir)\\
\\
_Project Hail Mary_ was the perfect blend of humor, warmth, and science about a man who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of why or how he got there. I was tearing up during the final chapters and really did not expect this book to make me feel so warm and fuzzy inside. This story of hope, humanity, and unlikely friendship was an absolute delight, and the dialogue truly brings it to life. I highly recommend the audiobook - it's a fantastic experience, complete with different voices and sound effects!\\
\\
⭐ 4.50 - Paladin’s Grace (T. Kingfisher)\\
\\
I have been looking for a good medieval romantasy, and _Paladin’s Grace_ by T. Kingfisher was everything I wanted it to be. It follows a broken paladin and a fugitive perfumer who find hope, love, and comfort in each other, and UGH my heart was so happy by the end of the story. Was it somewhat predictable? Yes, but I still enjoyed every minute of this book and cannot wait to read the rest of the series!\\
\\
⭐ 4.00 - To Clutch A Razor (Veronica Roth)\\
\\
_When Among Crows_ was one of my surprise hits of last year, and I was so excited when I heard that Veronica Roth had written a sequel. I’ve always been drawn to stories about redemption, and Roth’s ability to explore that theme while blending rich Slavic folklore with modern urban fantasy in both _When Among Crows_ and _To Clutch A Razor_ was so fascinating to me. I didn’t love this sequel quite as much as the first book, but I thought it was a well-paced and immersive novella overall.\\
\\
\\
\\
⭐ 4.00 - The Maid and the Crocodile (Jordan Ifueko)\\
\\
_The Maid and the Crocodile_ is an African-inspired romantic standalone fantasy about a girl who accidentally binds herself to a powerful god known only as the Crocodile. I thought this was a very solid standalone fantasy overall with great disability rep, and loved the blend of African lore with the fairytale-like quality of the story (closest fairytale comp I can think of is Beauty and the Beast!). \\
\\
⭐ 3.75 - The Last Tiger (Julia Riew and Brad Riew)\\
\\
_The Last Tiger_ was an enjoyable read, and I especially appreciated how it drew inspiration from the authors’ grandparents’ stories during one of the darkest chapters in Korean history. Given that the writing style felt more middle grade than traditional YA, I’d recommend it to younger readers who are just getting into fantasy or anyone looking for a quick and accessible read. That said, it may not meet the expectations of more seasoned fantasy readers seeking a complex, upper YA Asian fantasy.\\
\\
⭐3.75 - The White Book (Han Kang)\\
\\
_Human Acts_ by Han Kang has been one of my favorite reads of 2025 so far, so I was eager to explore more of her work. _The White Book_ offers a meditative reflection on grief through the prism of the color white, but it didn’t quite land with the emotional weight I was hoping for. Still, I’m glad I picked it up because Han Kang’s writing was beautiful as always.\\
\\
⭐ 3.50 - Birth of a Dynasty (Chinaza Bado)\\
\\
_Birth of a Dynasty_ had a spectacular start - the first chapter gripped me immediately, and I was so eager to see how all the political machinations would play out. However, the story soon started to drag, and I found myself struggling to stay invested in the plot. For a debut, it had some good things going for it (writing that flowed, interesting premise, etc.), but overall, this one wasn't quite the political fantasy I hoped it would be. \\
\\
⭐3.50 - Embrace the Serpent (Sunya Mara)\\
\\
Sunya Mara makes some of the coolest videos out there (her editing skills are top tier and her book promo videos seriously feel like magic), so I went into this one really hoping to love it, but unfortunately the story didn’t leave a lasting impression. That said, I think fans of YA fantasy might still find a lot to enjoy here. If a synopsis involving a young jeweler’s apprentice caught in a perilous bargain with the mysterious Serpent King in a marriage of convenience piques your interest, I’d still suggest checking it out!\\
\\
⭐3.00 - Tokyo Ueno Station (Yu Miri)\\
\\
The synopsis of _Tokyo Ueno Station_ reminded me of the final scene of Miyazaki’s _Grave of the Fireflies_ (one of the most heartbreaking and unforgettable films EVER) so I was eager to dive in. Unfortunately, the story wandered a bit too much for my taste, and I struggled to feel emotionally connected to the characters.\\
\\
I know I haven’t been very active on this Bindery page lately (been taking some time to sort through a few things in my personal life) but I’m hoping to post more regularly soon. I’m also planning to launch a Bindery book club focused on fantasy, dark academia and sci-fi by Asian authors, with the goal of getting it up and running by Q4 at the latest. Stay tuned, and hope you are all enjoying your summers! :) \\
