Epic fantasy featuring warrior priestesses and fickle gods at war, for readers of Brian Staveley's Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne.

Hessa is an Eangi: a warrior priestess of the Goddess of War, with the power to turn an enemy's bones to dust with a scream. Banished for disobeying her goddess's command to murder a traveller, she prays for forgiveness alone on a mountainside. While she is gone, raiders raze her village and obliterate the Eangi priesthood.

Grieving and alone, Hessa—the last Eangi—must find the traveller and atone for her weakness and secure her place with her loved ones in the High Halls. As clans from the north and legionaries from the south tear through her homeland, slaughtering everyone in their path, Hessa strives to win back her goddess’ favour.

Beset by zealot soldiers, deceitful gods, and newly-awakened demons at every turn, Hessa burns her path towards redemption and revenge. But her journey reveals a harrowing truth: the gods are dying and the High Halls of the afterlife are fading. Soon Hessa's trust in her goddess weakens with every unheeded prayer.

Thrust into a battle between the gods of the Old World and the New, Hessa realizes there is far more on the line than securing a life beyond her own death. Bigger, older powers slumber beneath the surface of her world. And they're about to wake up.

Wow, hi, did y’all know I’m really bad with dates? (If you’ve been in book club for a while, I’m sure the answer to that is yes)

**What. A. Week. **\ \ I mean, is there even anything else to talk about? Certainly not in my life, at least. Launching Skies Press really has taken over all of my days and I can’t believe that was just on Tuesday. It feels like it was five minutes ago and weeks ago.\ \ \ \ We launched an imprint this week, I’m looking into my first manuscript, I’m finalizing show art for the podcast and reaching out to guest hosts - though I have not plucked up the courage to reach out to my list of authors I want to interview; one step at a time - I’m putting together a little Skies Press FAQ, it’s been a busy week! I’m also going to have a Skies Press Day One video up on Bindery soon (tomorrow, ideally)\ \ But if you’re on my socials, you’ve been hearing about that all week, so here’s what else I’ve been doing…which is really just here’s what I’ve been reading\ \ \ \ We’re still in TBR Jar June so at the end of last week I picked Book #6, **A Natural History of Dragons **by Marie Brennan. And thanks to eagle-eyed commenters who know my 2024 Priority List better than I do, this is the third book from that list that I’ve pulled from the jar!\ \ This book ended up being, for me, exactly what I wanted Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries to be. Historical, largely realistic with one prominent fantasy edition, academic, it was great! I had heard that there weren’t actually a ton of dragons in this book, despite the title, and that’s correct but in an expected way. It’s first and foremost a memoir of Lady Trent’s life, to which dragons were important but somewhat incidental, especially here in the beginning. If you like the regency england vibes + dragons this is worth a try; and if you want something similar but with more dragons check out His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik.\ \ \ \ Pick #7 was The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi and this is why I love the TBR Jar. Last Tale was one of my most anticipated reads of last year and yet it’s been sitting on my shelf unread for 16 months because I could just never find the right time. The right time was never going to happen! I needed the push to finally pick it up and this was everything I wanted it to be. Quintessential gothic literature; toxicly codependent relationships; a sense of unreality that permeates every scene and keeps you guessing what’s real; delicious prose; this book was immaculate. I read it in one sitting because I just couldn’t put it down.\ \ \ \ Pick #8 was another quick read, Midnight Mass by Sierra Simone. This is the companion novella to Priest which follows that book but takes place between it and book 2, Sinner. Romance erotica novella, I thought I knew what I was in for, but Sierra Simone loves to surprise. I really, really enjoy her writing and this series in particular is really emotionally deep - I didn’t expect Priest to be a book that handles questions of faith and community and expectation and grief as deeply as it does when I picked it up - and I was pleasantly surprised to see that continue here. Yes of course it’s got a high smut factor packed into so few pages, but it’s also a very realistic look at how things might progress for our couple after their book and how being settled into a relationship with someone you love isn’t going to magically fix things or keep it easy. I will say, given that it is an erotica novella I do think it should have some content warnings because I wasn’t expecting just how heavy it got, so if you’re looking into this one please be aware of grief and allusions to a past suicide and miscarriage are present in this book.\ \ \ \ Pick #9 was **The Bone Season **by Samantha Shannon which, again, I’ve been waiting to get to for the LONGEST! You may know how much I love Priory of the Orange Tree and A Day of Fallen Night, so I of course wanted to dive into her other series when I read those, but decided to wait when I heard she was revising the first book and read that when it came out. Then it came out and I just never got around to it. Well, I finally did.\ \ I will say, it took me some time to find my legs with this one. The world in TBS has a lot of moving parts and it’s a LOT of information shotgunned at you in the beginning with not a lot of finesse, but once I got past maybe the first third of the book and settled into the story and the characters I was HOOKED. The ending???? I’m not going to say much about the book specifically because I will say it’s not what I was expecting/thought it was going to be and watching it unfold into something unexpected is an experience I hope everyone gets to have. This feels like a series that’s really going to kick into gear in the sequels and I’m excited to continue.\ \ \ \ And finally I just pulled the final TBR Jar June pick, #10, Hall of Smoke by HM Long. Looks like it’s going to be HM Long month because I’m also about to reread Dark Water Daughter to then go right into Black Tide Son (which is currently sitting on my shelf right now! ahhh!). That’s what I’ll be reading during out Community Reading Night tonight on Discord and hopefully I’ll see you all there!\ \ \ \ \ \ So, that’s my week. Imprint launch and lots of reading. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to every single person who is reading this, who is supporting this venture, and who is here for the ride. We’ve got a lot of exciting things coming down the pipeline and I can’t wait to show you.\ \ \ \ Emma\ \ \ \ Upgrade for $5 or login
