“No one wants to talk about fish sex.”
“No one wants to talk about fish sex.” 😂
Just a sample of the wild twists and turns we experience in our Inky Phoenix book club Zooms! This conversation came from our THE SALT GROWS HEAVY Zoom inspired by a hilarious (and genius) observation from my friend @melissaalbertauthor.

Inky Phoenix Zoom Conversation: THE SALT GROWS HEAVY
Inky Phoenix members discuss Cassandra Khaw's novella THE SALT GROWS HEAVY.
Note: Cassandra had to cancel last minute because they didn’t feel well, so it’s just the club chatting! And y’all, we go off the rails in the best way. I’m just gonna say fish sex. You’re gonna have to tune in to find out.

Our October pick: THE SALT GROWS HEAVY by Cassandra Khaw💀
This novella packs a punch: a cannibalistic mermaid, crumbling kingdoms, beautiful prose. Cassandra Khaw is a master of the genre and you’re about to find out why!

Current literary obsession: mermaids, sirens, and selkies.
Not sure why, but I’ve recently become obsessed with stories about women and the sea. I’ve read a few books on these topics in the past, but have been really enjoying diving into some of the newer ones that have come out over the past few years. I’m about 60% of the way through Emilia Hart’s newest (out 4.1.25) and it’s definitely scratching that itch. I cannot put it down.
Have you read any books about these myths? What were your favorites?

face your fears with chilling trans* horror books
💀 one of my favorite things about horror? it can be incredibly empowering. these books have FANGS and CLAWS, but also leave you with some amazingly cathartic righteous rage & something real to chew on.
i’d love to invite you to join me for the second annual trans rights readathon. march 22-29! we’ll read trans* books and fundraise for trans* organizations. i’m fundraising for the Transgender Law Center.

Books with Netflix's Damsel Vibes
Love it or hate it, the vibes in Netflix’s adaptation of Damsel were immaculate. Here’s some other books full of revenge-fueled anti-heroines and dark fairytale vibes.
The Fireborne Blade and Someone You Can Build A Nest In will be published later this spring, but I love them both too much to not include.
What are your favorite anti-fairytales?
