See the journey

A warm and hopeful story of a lonely witch consumed by grief who discovers a whimsical cast of characters in a magical arboretum—and the healing power of found family.

Powerless witch Saika is ready to enact her sister’s final request: to plant her remains at the famed Ash Gardens. When Saika arrives at the always-stormy sanctuary, she is welcomed by its owner, an enormous knit-cardiganed mythical beast named Frank, who offers her a role as one of the estate’s caretakers.

Overcome with grief, Saika accepts, desperate to put off her final farewell to her sister. But the work requires a witch with intrinsic power, and Saika’s been disconnected from her magic since her sister’s death two years prior. Saika gets by at the sanctuary using a fragment of a fallen star to cast enchantments—while hiding the embarrassing truth about herself.

As Saika works harder in avoidance of her pain, she learns more about Frank, the decaying house at Ash Gardens, and the lives of the motley staff, including bickering twin cherubs, a mute ghost, a cantankerous elf, and an irritating half witch, among others. Over time, she rediscovers what it means to love and be wholly loved and how to allow her joy and grief to coexist. Warm and inventive, House of Frank is a stirring portrait of the ache of loss and the healing embrace of love.

The Secret Power of Literature... and spoiler alert, it's not escapism.

Escapism is lovely, but that is not what reading does for me. So I thought I would share a little bit about one of the biggest things I get out of reading.

***Trigger warnings: grief, slavery, trauma, parentlessness, broken family, racism***

Left Unread Books\ \ Michael LaBorn\ \ • Jul 1 2024

[Last week was a pretty eventful reading week for me. On top of finishing _The Berrypickers, Toxic Bloodlines _& Opaque, I also spent some time diving into several books that I haven't finished yet, including _House of Frank by Kay Synclaire, Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and Children of Anarchy and Anguish by Tomi Adeyemi. _Additionally, I also had the incredible privilege of being able to read the finished manuscript of Daughter of Danray, the third installment in the _Flowers of Prophecy _Series by Natalia Hernandez.\ \ So yeah... i've been READING this week. Lol. So let's talk about the books I finished!\ _**The Berrypickers by Amanda Peters: **_I don't know the last time a book made me cry, but the Berrypickers came ready for me. That's all I can say. This is one of the most emotional books I have ever read.\ \ Joe is the second youngest in an indigenous family who spends every summer in Novia Scotia picking grapes for a wealthy white family. Early in the book, Joe's younger sister Ruthie goes missing, with him being the last to see her. Throughout the book, we watch him struggle with the loss of his sister and the part he fears he played in losing her.\ \ In Maine, our other Main Character--Norma--grows up wrestling to cope with her parent's overprotective love and the dreams that have plagued her since she was a child. She becomes more and more certain that her family has a massive secret. One that takes nearly her entire life to uncover.\ \ This book is about loss, love, grief, family and fighting for healing. I don't want to spoil too much, but this book deals with heavy things life grief, and what it looks like to spiral in the face of it...and to find hope again on the other side of it. It was both soul-wrenching and healing in a weird way. And it balanced the concepts of grief and family so beautifully that I couldn't help but fall in love with Amanda's writing. I am a fan for life!\ _**Toxic Bloodlines by Emmanuel Ossai: **_Toxic Bloodlines is set in the small town of Seventh Heaven. Soon after several meteorites strike, a group of young people begin to experience a series of mysterious and terrifying encounters. Monsters, cultists and mysteries they can't explain. It becomes clear very quickly that this town--and their parents--have been keeping secrets that they won't part with easily. And in order to survive, these kids will have to figure out what horrible history the older generation is hiding so they can find a path to escaping it themselves.\ \ I started this book a while back and had put it down for whatever reason, but when someone suggested it for this month's book club, I picked it back up and happily gave it another shot. I found the story itself very interesting and was pretty satisfied with the story's conclusion, but this one was a little bit of a rough read for me. In general, culty horror stories don't really do it for me, and this one had some rough edges on top of the genre not being my favorite. There were a few times where the story jumped in ways I wasn't understanding, and that was pretty jarring for me. I wouldn't say the writing was bad. It was just a very layered story and didn't quite land all of the connections for me.\ _**Opaque by Calix Leigh Reign: **_Another hard read for me, but for different reasons.\ \ The book follows two young people. Adam and Cally. Adam is a senior in highschool and is struggling with his identity. He finds himself having some very inapropriate thoughts about his mother, which lead him to believe he is a monster who is unworthy of love. And as a result, he finds himself on a very dark path. Until he meets Cally, who reveals that he is actually the last known member of one of several Russian bloodlines who have been hunted for centuries because of their unique supernatural abilities. Together, the two of them must find her missing parents and join in the fight to end the secret Russian agency that has been hunting them, so that their families can finally come out of hiding and live like everyone else.\ \ The story itself was pretty interesting. The writing was good as well. But I struggled with the inclusion of his attraction for his mother. It is explained chemically in the book, and I'm not going to condemn the author for the inclusion, as she did not lean into anything abusive between the two. But it, as well as some other darker themes that served no noticeable purpose, were just not for me.\ \ As far as the writing, there are moments where the story's POV is not entirely clear, and that was a bit disorienting. But like I said above, overall, I thought the story was interesting and the writing was good. And I am curious where the story goes from here, so I will probably finish the series at some point.\ \

My Week of Reading

I finished three books in the last week: The Berrypickers by Amanda Peters, Toxic Bloodlines by Emmanual Ossai & Opaque by Calix Leigh-Reigh. Read below for my brief thoughts on each!

12 Cozy Fantasy books about Belonging & Finding your place in the world 🤎

What are some of your favourite books that centre found family and finding your place in a community?

While this is a theme that you can find in so many different type of genres/sub-genres, I feel that Cozy Fantasy is the perfect place to explore themes of being othered, not fitting in and finding a place where you do!

A quote that I love from one of the books in here (The Moonsingers by Robyn J Pritzker) that focuses on this theme says: “In fact, what she most wanted, and could never before articulate, was to find the place where she made sense and help others do the same.” and I think every single book in here helps you see how the MCs find their place in their own community and feel accepted🥺🤎

Here’s to the people who accept us just the way we are and become a part of our community just as much as we are a part of theirs 🤎🤎

17 books that make me feel seen because ...

Is there any book(s) that you feel makes you seen? 👀

Books that make me feel seen belong to a lot of categories, including those that focus on found family, cozy fantasy and retellings. A lot of the themes that tie this books together are finding a place where you belong, having our stories told with the beauty and fairness they deserve and being accepted wholly for who you are 🤎

Each of this piles carry books that are in different genres, including Cozy Fantasy, Romance, Retellings and Anthologies to name a few but I saw myself in each of them! Sometimes it was the representation like Aicha, being a Moroccan Retelling as someone who is from there or a Muslim Romance in The Mis-Arrangement of Sanaa Saeed! I also saw alot of my struggles as a disabled/CI in Its all in your Head and there’s a piece of my in all of these books🥺

And the STEM field Related books will always have a special place in my heart because of how relatable it is as someone who works in the field!

And here is a list of all the books mentioned in this post: 🍄 It’s all in your head by Sabina Nordqvist 🍄 The Mis-Arrangement of Sana Saeed by Noreen Mughees 🍄 The Between-Worlds B&B by Amy Mae Baxter 🍄 The Ex-Perimento by Maria J. Morillo 🍄 The Other Bennet Sister by Janice Hadlow 🍄 Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett 🍄 Best Hex Ever by Nadia El-Fassi 🍄 House of Frank by Kay Synclaire 🍄 Seasons of Glass and Iron by Amal-Mohtar 🍄 A Witch’s Guide to Love and Poison by Aamna Quershi 🍄 The Fortune Tellers of Rue Daru by Olesya Salnikova Gimore 🍄 The Girl with a Thousand Faces by Sunyi Dean 🍄 Aicha by Soraya Bouazzaoui 🍄 Weavingshaw by Heba Al-Wasity 🍄 One Yellow Eye by Leigh Radford 🍄 Love and Other Brain Experiments by Hannah Brohm 🍄 Next Level Love by Shameez Patel

Sapphic Speculative Fiction Expands the Imagination\ \ Many people approach queer romance through familiar frameworks. Modern settings. Recognizable social rules. Families that resemble the structures most of us grew up around. I wrote about this a week or two ago, about looking beyond contemporary romance for great sapphic stories.\ \ Those stories matter. They reflect lived experience and present-day struggles.\ \ Yet some of the most thought-provoking sapphic stories appear in places where the rules look completely different.\ \ Speculative fiction offers writers a simple but radical tool. The ability to ask what happens when the world operates under different assumptions?\ \ What happens when gender does not function the way our societies expect?\ \ What happens when colonial hierarchies collapse or never existed in the first place?\ \ What happens when family and community follow different structures?\ \ Sapphic speculative fiction thrives in these questions.\ \ What counts as speculative fiction?\ \ Speculative fiction serves as an umbrella term for stories that imagine worlds different from our own.\ \ Fantasy explores magic, mythology, and alternate societies.\ \ Science fiction looks at future technology, space exploration, and evolving social systems.\ \ Alternate history reimagines historical timelines.\ \ Dystopian and utopian fiction examine political systems taken to extreme outcomes.\ \ Magical realism blends ordinary life with elements that challenge reality.\ \ All of these genres share a common feature. They build worlds where the assumptions we treat as natural begin to shift.\ \ When those foundations move, storytelling changes.\ \ Reimagining gender systems\ \ Many speculative worlds question the rigid gender frameworks common in contemporary culture.\ \ Some settings include fluid understandings of gender. Others remove the strict gender hierarchy. Some societies organize identity through entirely different categories.\ \ When gender works differently, relationships evolve as well.\ \ Characters express attraction without the scripts that dominate many romance narratives. Partnerships develop around compatibility, trust, or shared goals rather than predetermined roles.\ \ For readers, this shift opens new ways of thinking about identity and connection.\ \ Challenging colonial power structures\ \ Speculative fiction often explores empire, conquest, and resistance.\ \ Many worlds center characters fighting against oppressive systems or rebuilding communities after political collapse. Some stories draw inspiration from Indigenous traditions or non-Western perspectives to imagine societies structured around different values.\ \ Within these settings, sapphic characters frequently appear as leaders, rebels, scholars, or explorers. Their relationships unfold inside larger struggles over power, survival, and cultural memory.\ \ Love does not exist in isolation. It grows alongside questions about justice, resistance, and the future of entire communities.\ \ Rethinking family and community\ \ Another striking feature of speculative fiction involves how stories approach family.\ \ The nuclear family model rarely stands as the only option. Characters often live within chosen families, cooperative communities, traveling crews, or political alliances.\ \ Romantic relationships exist inside these broader networks of care.\ \ Two people falling in love may also share responsibilities to their crew, their village, or their resistance movement. Partnership becomes part of a wider web of loyalty and support.\ \ For many readers, this structure feels both imaginative and deeply familiar.\ \ Common tropes in sapphic speculative fiction\ \ Speculative fiction combines romance with adventure and conflict. Certain narrative patterns recur.\ \ A princess guarded by a loyal warrior or knight who begins to question her duty.\ \ Rival soldiers from opposing factions are forced to work together.\ \ A scholar and a fighter navigating a dangerous quest.\ \ Political enemies are forming uneasy alliances during a rebellion.\ \ Explorers encounter unfamiliar worlds and build trust through survival.\ \ These tropes create tension, intimacy, and emotional growth while the larger story unfolds.\ \ Why these stories expand the imagination\ \ Speculative fiction does more than entertain. It shifts perspective.\ \ When readers step into worlds built on different assumptions, the systems shaping their own lives become visible. Gender roles, political hierarchies, and family structures reveal themselves as historical constructs rather than permanent truths.\ \ Sapphic speculative fiction takes this imaginative shift even further.\ \ Queer women appear not as side characters but as central figures in the story of the world itself. They lead revolutions. Build communities. Explore unknown territories. Fall in love while reshaping the societies around them.\ \ These stories ask readers to imagine something larger than representation.\ \ They ask us to imagine entirely different ways people live together.\ \ An invitation to explore\ \ If you have not spent time with sapphic speculative fiction, consider this an invitation.\ \ Explore fantasy worlds where magic reshapes power.\ \ Read science fiction that questions identity in future societies.\ \ Look for stories where love grows alongside resistance, exploration, and discovery.\ \ These books stretch the imagination in ways that linger long after the final page.\ \ I am especially interested in reading more sapphic speculative fiction this year.\ \ Which books expanded your worldview?\ \ Which stories stayed with you long after you finished them?\ \ Here is a list of books I've read and books on my TBR!\ \ \ \ Join for free or login

[I kept wandering the city, checking my google maps for nearby bookstores. I came upon McNally Jackson.\ \ About McNally Jackson \ \

McNally Jackson Books is an independent bookstore in New York City owned and operated since 2004 by Sarah McNally. The company operates five stores across the city in Soho, Rockefeller Center, Seaport, Downtown Brooklyn, and Williamsburg, as well as three stationery stores called Goods for the Study.\ \ The first thing I saw was the huge wall of books. The lighting and bookcases made for an impressive first impression.\ \ \ \ I didn’t realize just how big the store was. I can’t remember which location I was at, but when I thought there weren’t anymore books, I found another corner.\ \ \ \ I liked how they did shelf talkers.\ \ \ \ An excellent choice of book to recommend, even if it will shred your heart to pieces.\ \ \ \ Parable of the Sower is another must read.\ \ \ \ I left with House of Frank, one of the first Bindery Books releases!\ \ \ \ When I’m in NYC another time, I’d like to visit more of the McNally locations.\ \

[#Pitchfest is a seasonal event hosted by @bindery_books for authors without literary agents to submit their unpublished materials to tastemakers for consideration. Submissions to select Bindery tastemakers (including ME) are open April 9th-11th. Links to submit go live on April 9th. More details can be found here —> https://binderybooks.com/pitchfest/ I am hoping to find our next Boundless Press title through this Pitchfest so I can't wait to see your pitches!! Boundless Press (Jananie K. Velu aka @thisstoryaintover) is currently seeking unconventional adult literary fiction that leans into messy, unreliable BIPOC protagonists, or speculative fiction that is heavily centered on real-world issues, particularly from Black, South Asian, or Arab voices. Resonant themes: generational trauma, mental health/mental illness, queer POC experiences, colonization, class privilege, and found family. We are NOT seeking high fantasies. romantasies, or traditional HEA romances at this time (though that doesn’t mean we won’t in the future!). \ \ 🚨Note that Pitchfest is not a contest, but an open submissions window. Tastemakers may or may not choose to move ahead with one of the submissions from this opportunity.\ \ The following Bindery titles were all discovered through prior Pitchfest events: House of Frank by Kay Synclaire, Crueler Mercies by Maren Chase, Of Monsters and Mainframes by Barbara Truelove, To Bargain With Mortals by R. A. Basu, and Recipes for an Unexpected Afterlife by Deston J. Munden. Make sure to check out the wishlists of the other tastemaker imprints as well!\ \

[I’m so thrilled to announce the exciting news that today is the official launch of my new publishing imprint, Kist Reads!\ \ \ \ Kist Reads is hosted by Bindery, which is the platform you’re on right now that houses the Sickos community. If you don’t know what an imprint is, think of it like this: Penguin Random House is a publisher and their various imprints publish certain types of books. Penguin Classics, for example, is one of their imprints. This is one of the most exciting projects I’ve undertaken as a content creator. When I first joined Bindery, launching my own imprint was a major goal, and thanks to the incredible support of our Sickos community, it’s now a reality.\ \ Along with the existing benefits, subscribers will now become part of the publishing journey! You’ll get an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the entire process—from manuscript to marketing, from cover design to launch. You can even get your name in the book!\ \ By subscribing, you’re not just supporting me; you’re helping to publish a book by an up-and-coming author. A healthy portion of every subscription is being set aside for the Kist Reads imprint to provide a talented author with all the resources they need to bring their book to life and make it a success.\ \ I have not chosen a book yet but that process will begin soon. If you’re an agented author with a manuscript that fits the bill, you can SUBMIT HERE ! If you’re an indie author, follow Bindery on their various social platforms and keep an eye out because they regularly host “Pitch Fests” for this purpose.\ \ Here’s what I’m looking for in our first book:\ \

Loves, my reading this week was all over the place... \ \ I made a dent in The Poppy War and another in House of Frank. I enjoy both — though for entirely different reasons, as you might imagine. \ \ Additionally, I finished Halfling by S.E. Wendel, which had its charming moments along with its steamy ones and is a significant improvement from my previous venture into orc-ish romantasy ( Bound to the Orc Ranger by Krista Luna was simply not to my taste at all). \ \ Did I also get just a little sidetracked by Forged in Blood (and subsequently Promised in Blood) by Sadie Kincaid? Yes, I did. I'm very unsure why I bothered with either because even if it was intended to scratch a reverse-harem-vampire-academia sort of an itch, I can't say it necessarily... did. Blame my sick need for resolution and a meager wish that a series has the potential to improve. \ \ On that note, remember my mention a few days ago that I rarely offer one-star ratings but that Cloak of the Vampire was among them? Well, folks. It has a second book, Blood of the Gods by Sapir A. Englard. I sampled it and DNF-ed at 10%, which should tell you all you need to know. \ \ Now, on to happier topics! \ \ Grappling with dissertation proposal research led me right into the arms of Masquerade by O.O. Sangoyomi, Destroyer of Light by Jennifer Marie Brissett, and Girl, Goddess, Queen by Bea Fitzgerald, all of which I plan to sink my teeth into within the next few weeks. Any guesses as to what my research might entail...? \ \ I also think we're honing in on the perfect time for a Legendborn and Bloodmarked reread in advance of Tracy Deonn's Oathbound release on March 4th. \ \ Anyone else have an ambitious TBR to wrap up February?
