Synopsis

An exquisitely moving story about grief, love and family, from the global phenomenon Sally Rooney.

Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common. Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke.

Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman emerging from her own turbulent past, and their lives become rapidly and intensely intertwined.

For two grieving brothers and the people they love, this is a new interlude—a period of desire, despair and possibility—a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.

What I’m Currently Reading

Academy of Liars by Alexis Henderson
I am already OBSESSED with this book omg. I had an e-ARC of this but only had the chance to start it this past weekend. I really loved House of Hunger by this author, which was a wonderful and sumptuous vampire book, but THIS BOOK wow. The writing style and voice in this one is a bit different and definitely more of that contemporary fantasy / thriller vibe and it’s just everything I love — a mentally ill character figuring themselves out and getting into deeper (potentially magical) trouble.

What I’m Watching
I recently finished watching part 1 of the new season of Emily in Paris and it was deliciously stupid and frivolous as usual so it was highly entertaining lol. I still need to find a day to watch part 2 but I’m excited for it.

I’ve also been rewatching Gilmore Girls for the millionth time since fall is here and it’s just the perfect show for cozy season. I'm already on season 2 and enjoying myself immensely.
