Tracy Deonn’s #1 New York Times bestselling _Legendborn_ Cycle continues in the sensational third book about a dazzling contemporary fantasy world that blends Southern Black Girl Magic with secret societies and the legend of King Arthur!

Severed from the Legendborn. Oathbound to a monster. Bree Matthews is alone. She exiled herself from the Legendborn Order, cut her ancestral connections, and turned away from the friends who can’t understand the impossible cost of her powers. This is the only way to keep herself—and those she loves—safe. But Bree’s decision has come with a terrible price: an unbreakable bargain with the Shadow King himself, a shapeshifter who can move between humanity, the demon underworld, and the Legendborn secret society.

In exchange for training to wield her unprecedented abilities, Bree has put her future in the Shadow King’s hands—and unwittingly bound herself to do his bidding as his new protégé. Meanwhile, the other Scions must face war with their Round Table fractured, leaderless, and missing its Kingsmage, as Selwyn has also disappeared.

When Nick is detained by the Order’s Merlins, he invokes an ancient law that requires the High Council of Regents to convene at the Northern Keep and grant him an audience. No one knows what he will demand of them…or what secrets he has kept hidden from the Table.

As a string of mysterious kidnappings escalates and Merlins are found dead, it becomes clear that no matter how hard Bree runs from who she is, the past will always find her.

It has been bit! Things are finally slowing down with school ending (Cue HSM 2) and I've been taking things slowly. When a chapter comes to a close, it's so easy to be wrapped up in keeping busy as well as mourning the routine, that you kinda forget to be a human.\\

[In a world in which we’ve seen boycotts and outrage towards almost every major corporation, it’s always fascinated me that Barnes & Noble has been seemingly left untouched. Sure, the occasional online grumble will work its way through Threads or TikTok or Instagram or whatever, yet the only time I can remember an actual mobilization was against their in-house Starbucks-owned cafes.\\
\\
It’s shocked me the number of people I meet who have given up shopping at Amazon and Target, but still love B&N. Whenever I ask, they can never quite articulate why they give B&N a pass. It’s usually a combination of nostalgia or convenience or selection or exclusive offerings.\\
\\
And when it comes to “bad” corporations, Barnes & Noble really isn’t at the top of that list. They disclosed no lobbying in the 2024 election. Their CEO, James Daunt, isn’t a borderline-insane human being. Some, not me, might even argue that he’s had an overtly positive impact on the bookselling and publishing industry for decades.\\
\\
Yet, when we look at B&N’s actual policies and, more importantly, their impact, there’s nothing of substance. They have no public-facing statement on DEI or on book banning–they did join Penguin in opposition of Texas HB900 in 2023, but have been eerily quiet ever since–and while they claim to donate to “pre-K-12 schools and not-for-profit arts, literacy, humane and community service organizations”, they don’t appear to actively advocate for any cause.\\
\\
Nearly every interaction they have with any sort of cultural or political movement comes with capitalistic intent. Their website and socials boast about ‘Pride Month Reads’ and ‘Books to Read on Juneteenth’, a performance only brought out when it’s trendy or when it benefits their image. Yet, when it comes to actually supporting marginalized authors, they fail to show up.\\
\\
Take Danica Nava, a romance author and member of the Chickasaw Nation, for example. Her first book The Truth According to Ember was the first traditionally published romance by an Indigenous author. It received rave reviews from readers, was a USA Today bestseller, and a Goodreads Choice Nominee. In May, Nava posted on threads that her newest book Love is a War Song (7/22) had not recieved any retailer placements, meaning no big-box stores had placed a chain-wide order–this includes B&N.\\
\\
While she went on to confirm that a few B&N employees had reached out letting her know that they had ordered a few copies with their discretionary store budgets, there is no widespread guarantee that the book will be available or prominently promoted on release day.\\
\\
Nava wrote, “ _Stores have and will continue to prioritize white romance, especially in (the cowboy) genre that has contributed to the erasure of my people and perpetuated harmful stereotypes for decades. My fun, hilarious romcom isn’t the right cowboy._”\\
\\
Pair this with the release of Oathbound (Legendborn 3) by Tracy Deonn, which was somehow still overshadowed by Onyx Storm in stores, despite being released almost 2 months later. Readers complained that stores were severely understocked, had no promotional materials or displays, and claimed that staff were almost completely uninformed about the highly-anticipated release.\\
\\
Additionally, just this week Publisher’s Weekly published an article about the challenges Indie Publishers have faced since Daunt took over the chain. They state that his decisions to remove “‘boring’ and ‘tedious’ books” from Barnes & Noble’s shelves disproportionately affected them vs. big 5 publishing houses. One publisher even commented that Amazon ordered 25x as many copies of a recent hardcover release than B&N’s NYC-based buyers.\\
\\
_“Nearly every one of the dozen well-established independent publishing leaders interviewed by PW said that their business with B&N has dropped significantly since Daunt took over. Some indies said that the bookseller is no longer even their second-largest account”._\\
\\
And this lack of impact and support extends past authors and publishers and into the communities in which their stores operate. They’re a favorite amongst larger publishers for event stops, often beating out smaller local indies in the event request process, due to their market leverage. Yet, these events are riddled with inconsistencies in their planning, marketing, and overall experiences.\\
\\
Even their beloved Onyx Storm suffered from B&N’s lack of community-centricity. Many attendees of their January midnight releases complained publicly about the chain’s lack of planning, saying that they were left to wander around the store for 2 hours without food, drinks, or promised activities. B&N’s booksellers stated that corporate offices gave them no direction on these events and left them to plan and execute entirely on their own.\\
\\
More recently, S.A. Cosby visited B&N’s Cumberland, GA location on his King of Ashes tour. According to attendees, this event sold well over 100 tickets, but crammed attendees into a small space with only 12-13 chairs, provided no microphone to Cosby, and did not bring in a conversation partner. The latter point alone is a gross misstep in planning, especially from the perspective of an indie bookstore owner who is paying for the travel expenses for moderators and venue rentals for 4 debut author events happening at our store over the next 3 months. Details like this aren’t just nice-to-haves, they’re requirements for engaging and meaningful reader-author interactions.\\
\\
James Daunt has made it clear that he plans on running B&N with an emphasis on profitability and sales, which is not unlike any Fortune500 CEO, so why do readers keep turning to them with expectations beyond the transactional? Why does the industry consider them a third space or a champion for readers and authors?\\
\\
Are they just a study in staying quiet and flying under the radar? Or are we just unwilling to view their complacency as harm?\\
\\
So, sure, continue to kill time in their stores or even buy books from them if you want, but don’t expect more from them than you expect from Amazon, Walmart, or Target. Stop giving them opportunities you don’t give libraries, non-profits, and community-run bookstores, and, more importantly, start holding them accountable for the ones they do get.](https://notsowellread.binderybooks.com/item/XKCHSTPzRCMoXrBR7nm5/)

It's time for my March Reading Wrap-Up! I read 5 books in March, mostly in a hybrid format (audio & print).\\
\\
**_The Grimkes: The Legacy of Slavery in an American Family_ by Kerri K. Greenidge** \\
\\
Unlike many other books on the Grimkes, this one depicts the family members, white & Black, as nuanced people who simultaneously fought for abolition while upholding white supremacist culture. The story of the Grimkes is one of enslavement, violence, anti-Blackness, abolition, women’s suffrage, colonialism, colorism, racism, queerness, homophobia, classism, & generational trauma. Check out my full review here: Instagram\\
\\
**_Bloodmarked_ by Tracy Deonn** \\
\\
Deonn did an amazing job at showing how Bree's "strength" & "resilience" became detrimental to her as a Black girl. We feel the pressure to persevere because just about every system is working against us & our ancestors worked so hard that we are afraid to seem as though we don't appreciate their struggles. I'm not sure that white folks & other BIPOC realize how much pressure there is for Black women & girls to be "excellent" or risk being nothing at all. Full review here.\\
\\
**_Oathbound_ by Tracy Deonn** \\
\\
This book is undoubtedly one of the best books I’ve read in my life. Throughout this series, Deonn explores the ways that white supremacy tries to suppress Black folks' power when they can't use us or profit off of us. I don’t want to share too much & spoil the book for anyone so if you want my full review, check it out here: Book Review: Oathbound by Tracy Deonn\\
\\
**_The Gatekeeper’s Staff (TJ Young & The Orishas, \#1)_ by Antoine Bandele** \\
\\
This is a heartwarming yet action-packed YA Fantasy championing late-bloomers. I love the themes of teamwork, honesty, connecting w/ nature, & dedication throughout the book. It was also amazing to have a story that follows someone who is Nigerian-American at a magic school w/ no basis in the usual Western deities. The cast features folks from across the African diaspora! It’s a great series, so far.\\
\\
**_Where the Library Hides_ by Isabel Ibañez** \\
\\
I really wanted to like this book. Growing up, I was obsessed w/ Ancient Egypt so when I read the 1st book in this duology, I paid no mind to Ines’s naïveté. After all, this is a YA book & Ines was a bit pampered growing up. What frustrated me was the fact that she never seemed to learn from her mistakes. The story had a steady pace & the concept of this duology was intriguing but I found the execution lacking in depth & consistency.\\

Thoughts on a StoryGraph buddy read? \\
\\
This one is JUST for the Sipping Society folk (hi, loves).\\
\\
I'll be very straightforward—I am not much of a book club girlie because, mood reader that I am, I can't be told to read something... it has to speak to me. I can tell _myself_ what to do, but nobody else gets to pick for me, you know? So starting my own book club hasn't been on my to-do list, but thoughts in that direction have been floated my way by others recently, and I'd like to take a pulse here.\\
\\
Can we start with a group buddy read on StoryGraph, and see how things go? _That_, I would definitely have an easier time getting on board with, and since I _really_ want to read _Oathbound_ once the Trans Rights Readathon wraps up, could we start there? April 1st? Pretty please?\\
\\
I realize that this assumes folks have already read _Legendborn_ and _Bloodmarked_, so I recognize this may kick off with a smaller crew. (Possibly better for me not to get mega overwhelmed, if I'm honest.)\\

[**This week in the book world:** \\
\\
This week was all about Sunrise on the Reaping! It's been so fun seeing everyone diving back into the world of my all-time-favorite series. I'm only about 1/3 of the way through, but I know from everyone's stories that this is going to emotionally destroy me. I am ready. \\
\\
I had my own personal drama with this title–specifically a certain publisher not having us sign the needed embargo paperwork, which delayed our shipment by 3 days–but overall this release seemed to go a lot more smoothly than THAT one in January. I will say, I am forever jealous of the folks who got to attend the Waterstones Midnight Release. That looked AMAZING and even my indie-loving heart isn't afraid to admit it.\\
\\
**This Week's Publishing News:** \\
\\
- Sarah Beth Durst announced a new teen book this week! It's called The Faraway Inn about a teen girl who goes to work at her aunt's secretly-magical B&B after a breakup.\\
\\
- New horror novel called The House Where Nothing Hurts, "pitched as Bunny meets Marlena and for fans of Yellowjackets, about a high school volleyball team that discovers a haunted house where none of their actions seem to have lasting physical consequences"\\
\\
- Lindsay King-Miller, author of The Z Word, is teaming up with Rachel Feder for a dystopian retelling of The Picture of Dorian Gray called Dorian/Gray, pitched as a retelling of The Picture of Dorian Gray "where the rich are assigned poor scapegoats who experience all the negative consequences of their actions through quantum entanglement"\\
\\
\\
**This Week's New Releases:** \\
\\
Much slower week than last week, but still some good ones:\\
\\
- Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones\\
\\
- Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins\\
\\
- Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green\\
\\
- The Hymn to Dionysus by Natasha Pulley\\
\\
- The Haunting of Room 904 by Erika T. Wurth\\
\\
- The Prince Without Sorrow (Obsidian Throne, #1) by Maithree Wijesekara\\
\\
- The Third Rule of Time Travel by Philip Fracassi\\
\\
\\
**What I Read This Week:** \\
\\
**Oathbound (Finished)**\\
\\
UGGGHHH!!! When's the next one???? I just want my babies to be happy together, okay? Also, in other news, I saw in publisher's weekly that Legendborn sold only 2000 copies in its first week, but Oathbound sold 20k+ in its first week and I'm just so happy!!\\
\\
**Soulgazer (Finished)**\\
\\
This book captured my entire heart in a matter of pages. Not only is it an incredible pirate fantasy, it's got an incredibly tender romance that will be beloved by both historical and fantasy romance readers. I cannot wait for the next novel and will be thinking of Faolan and Saoirse nearly every day until then. 10/10, perfect romantasy. Y'all make sure to preorder this one and show author Maggie some love.\\
\\
**Kill Creatures (Finished)**\\
\\
Kill Creatures is the exact reason why I love teen thrillers. Impossible-to-put-down from the very first page with a twist that will leave readers of all ages reeling, Kill Creatures is the a sun-soaked-fever-dream thriller that's perfect for summer reading. This one comes out 6/3/25!\\
\\
**Blood Over Bright Haven (50%)**\\
\\
I am loving this book, which is very likely due to the incredible audiobook narrator. We called the twist pretty early on, but that hasn't kept me from enjoying it. I need to finish this one tonight before book club tomorrow, so I'll keep y'all updated on my progress.\\
\\
**Dance of Lies (28%)**\\
\\
Ooooh, I can tell that this one is going to be a slow burn and I am buckled in and ready.\\
\\
**What I bought/shelved:** \\
\\
Bought:\\
\\
- Till Death by Kellan McDaniel\\
\\
- Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins\\
\\
- I Am the Swarm by Hayley Chewins\\
\\
\\
Shelved:\\
\\
- Between Ink and Shadows by Melissa Wright\\
\\
\\
**Other Musings:** \\
\\
Don't forget the Trans Rights Read-a-thon is happening now till 3/31! I am hoping to read The Duke Steals Hearts & Other Body Parts and Till Death during this time!! I also wrote a little blog post with some of ours booksellers' favorite books by trans and nonbinary authors. [Hi Friends, \\
\\
Hope your weekend is off to a great start. I only have one goal for this weekend: FINISH OATHBOUND. \\
\\
I haven't even started my bookclub reads this month and we have got one week left! It's gonna be a close call. \\
\\
The THEY BLOOM AT NIGHT winners have been notified by email. Stay tuned for upcoming giveaways!\\
\\
As you know, each month I send one $5 subscriber a handwritten note with book recommendations and a $12/$25 subscriber a custom book box curated by ME! Those emails went out this morning! (4 emails, I'm behind!)\\
\\
Next week I am going on my VERY FIRST, VERY SPECIAL, trip! I'm heading out to Beverly Hills and even though I'm the poorest, I am going to try to spend my time like a celebrity, which means drinking a $20 Hailey Bieber smoothie and hope that it gives me perfect skin immediately and eating a $20 large strawberry! Please check out my used but very like new used books on mango. (By which I mean Pango but I'm too lazy to change the text). If none of those strike your fancy, shopping books on my bookshelf here helps as well! \\
\\
Which celebrity do you want me to run into the most? I'm thinking Pedro Pascal!](https://boozhoo.binderybooks.com/item/DCccIRUaxRf2h451UcIh/)

[PHEW! The proposal for my Master's thesis is officially submitted — everyone please do me a big favor and cross all your fingers and toes that the feedback is nothing but positive... I beg you. \\
\\
In addition to being one step closer to finishing grad school, it also means I get a bit of a break until thesis research kicks off in earnest in May! (Don't worry. That, too, will involve lots and LOTS of reading.) Until then, I get to make a massive dent in my endless TBR and finally catch up with you lovely folks here! \\
\\
**So here is what's in the works.**\\
\\
**OATHBOUND** \\
\\
I am halfway through my Lengendborn reread (yes, I need to reread in order to feel fully immersed — it isn't that I've forgotten major elements; it's that it feels better to me!), and my aim is to be DONE with all three books by the time the Trans Rights Readathon kicks off on March 21st. Speaking of which... \\
\\
**TRANS RIGHTS READATHON** \\
\\
For anyone who may not know, this is a ten day lead-up to **Trans Rights Visibility Day on March 31st** that encourages readers to focus on books written by and/or featuring characters who are trans, nonbinary, 2Spirit, and gender-nonconforming. (And if you haven't already devoured _The Wicked Bargain_ by Gabe Cole Novoa, this is a _great_ time to do that.) \\
\\
More details can be found on their website: https://transrightsreadathon.carrd.co/ I'll also post here later this week with what I plan to read during those ten days! \\
\\
Methinks I'll need to whittle the list down a bit, but _Prince of Sorrows_ and _Dragonfall_ are definitely up there. \\
\\
**FUN LOCAL THINGS** \\
\\
There are two (TWO!!) new independent bookshops opening in my area within the next few weeks, and I am _elated_. I've slid into the DMs of both shop owners and had the loveliest of coffee dates with one. \\
\\
**The Book Market** is an adorable little book truck that will launch at Laudenbach Brewing on March 22nd from 4:00pm to 6:30pm. \\
\\
**NOVEL** is sharing space with a new plant shop (!!!) on William Street in Fredericksburg. Their grand opening is planned for Friday, April 4th at 3:00pm. \\
\\
If you happen to be in the area or even passing through at some point in the future, _please_ come support a couple of women-owned small businesses. Downtown Fredericksburg couldn't be more charming (just you wait until the farmer's market kicks back up again), and you will not be in want of great local business to patronize for eating, shopping, and other frivolities. \\
\\
**GIVEAWAYS** \\
\\
**Paid subscribers** (hi, lovelies!) are already automatically entered for March's box (it's _so_ good). The winner will be announced on **Saturday, March 29th**, and the goodies will be shipped that day! (I'll contact the winner privately for details.) \\
\\
Additionally, I would love to spread some joy in the form of a few reading journals I was _delighted_ to find recently and some sticker packs from my favorite local stationary shop! I'll be putting together **FOUR** of these to send out no later than **Wednesday, April 9th**. \\
\\
This one is for ALL subscribers (paid and free), and it's open to all NEW folks who subscribe within the next few weeks. If you have anyone in mind who would love a shiny new journal and some adorable stickers, spread the word! If you refer any new subscriber directly, **let me know in the comments here**, and you'll get an extra entry! \\
\\
And that is officially the longest newsletter I've done so far on Bindery. Thank you all for letting me yap a bit, and thank you _extra_ for your loving support! \\

[**Weekly Wrap Up – 3.10-3.16** **This week in the book world:** \\
\\
Oooooohhhh I am SO excited to talk about ARCs this week. There has been SO much that happened and I have been stewing on this all week.\\
\\
Okay, so first, this thread started a very intense debate about whether or not it's okay to put ARCs in Little Free Libraries. The general consensus from readers is, yes, absolutely. What else are we supposed to do with them? Hoard them until death? Throw them away?\\
\\
Authors, however, did NOT agree. The major criticism was that they would be upset that an unfinished copy was "in circulation". I'm sorry, but one reader potentially finding an unfinished copy from the small number of LFLs visited by book reviewers does not qualify as "in circulation". On top of that, ARCs are clearly labeled as unfinished copies is many places, and while people are dumb, they're not that dumb.\\
\\
Now, the one thing we all seem to agree with is that you should NOT sell your ARCs for $100+ on sketchy resale accounts (like this woman), but I am absolutely loving the trend of publisher's using this as a marketing material. Please don't do this, also, please don't buy ARCs for $100+ just to read things a few months early. The stakes are NOT that high.\\
\\
**This Week's Publishing News:** \\
\\
There honestly wasn't anything exciting that I saw... I'm just as disappointed as you are.\\
\\
**This Week's New Releases:** \\
\\
Much slower week than last week, but still some good ones:\\
\\
- Stag Dance by Torrey Peters (Adult, literary)\\
\\
- Vanya and the Wild Hunt by Sangu Mandanna (Middle grade, fantasy\\
\\
- Rose of Jericho by Alex Grecian (Adult, horror)\\
\\
- What Wakes the Bells by Elle Tesch (YA, fantasy)\\
\\
- Go Luck Yourself by Sara Raasch (Adult, romance)\\
\\
\\
**What I Read This Week:** \\
\\
**One for my Enemy (Finished)**\\
\\
This wasn't my favorite Olivie Blake, but it was still really, really good. I do think it started off a bit stronger than it ended, but it was still gorgeous and some of the quotes killed me. She definitely did "Romeo and Juliet" in a way more unique way than others and it also incorporated some other Shakespeare easter eggs that had my inner Shakespeare nerd smiling. Also, if you have never read Olivie Blake and want to get into her works, I think this is an excellent place to start. Her prose and the way she structures her stories is so unique. This one is a great introduction to her style, while feeling more accessible for readers.\\
\\
**Oathbound (70%)**\\
\\
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE THINGS ARE GETTING SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!\\
\\
**Soulgazer (66%)**\\
\\
Wow wow wow. I started this yesterday at the end of my shift at the bookstore–things were SLOW–and I read over half of it last night. This is EXACTLY what I want in a romantasy. Plus, it's pirates, which you know is a soft-spot for me. Obsessed and I cannot wait to finish.\\
\\
**Kill Creatures (44%)**\\
\\
New Rory Power! This one has been a fun brain break. I don't like adult thrillers, but I love teen thrillers. This one is super short, so I plan on finishing it tonight. I'll update you all when I finish it. \\
\\
**Brother Bronte (DNF)**\\
\\
I just couldn't do it anymore. I hated Part 1. Really loved Part 2. Then Part 3 picked up and skipped right over all the actual plot. Honestly, I got so mad about that I gave up. I felt like the blurb sold me Scary Movie and then the book gave me Scream.\\
\\
**What I bought/shelved:** \\
\\
No purchases this week, but I did set two aside to buy next time I'm at the bookstore:\\
\\
- The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar\\
\\
- Greenteeth by Molly O'Neill](https://notsowellread.binderybooks.com/item/YVHQj0VpoOOmOCOy76zr/)
