See the journey

It's 2012, and post-revolution Egypt is sparking with political energy—but Hannah and Zain are numb.

The flight from New York to Cairo is long—longer still for two siblings on a journey to bury their mother. When they discover their father's unforgivable betrayal, what's left of their family crumbles.

Hannah gives up her spot at Columbia Law to remain in Egypt, where she navigates romantic entanglements and a new culture. Back in America, Zain's self-destructive behavior begins to catch up with him, leaving him to wonder whether he's any different from his father.

When the siblings reunite in Cairo months later, Zain is nearing rock bottom, and Hannah finds herself in the middle of the Arab Spring uprising. Together they confront shared secrets and reconcile their conservative upbringing with their new beliefs as adults. Will they heal together, or has the loss of their only bridge—their mother—set them permanently adrift?

A tender reflection on the effects of grief and loss, this deeply felt novel explores how siblings come together to mend a fractured family and, in the process, find themselves.

See? I TOLD the Discord lovelies that I would use the "By Appointment Only" for the things I posted just for us on Bindery — and I'm hoping there are a few of you seeing this on the newly launched app! Shout out to Sam/@freezingalyce for the excellent naming suggestion. \ \ (Also, if you're not in my Discord, do come hang. We share pics of pets and gossip about book events gone wrong, among other things. Invitation link here.) \ \ Anywho, I have a bit of an unhauling going on, and quite a few avenues by which to offload my stash. The usual method of "cart everything down to Riverby's and accept store credit" is lovely and all, but I'd sooner offer them to you marvelous folk. \ \ Advanced Reader Copies \ \ SO! First things first, the ARCs are FREE. The seal on the front says "not for sale," and I aim to honor such directives. I have extra ARC copies of the following THREE Bindery titles. \ \ "Of Monsters and Mainframes" by Barbara Truelove\ \ "Black Salt Queen" by Samantha Bansil\ \ "Dust Settles North" by Deena ElGenaidi\ \ All of the above are excellent, and I truly do recommend them. It's simply that I have no need/use for multiple copies of the same book. I am a collector, but once I have a favorite edition and/or more than one promotional copy, what purpose have I for extras?? Help me keep my office reasonably tidy. \ \ Should you have ANY interest at all in any of those three, please make your preference known in the comments below! These will be on a first come, first served basis, and I will ship them to you ASAP. (To that end, please keep a sharp eye on an email from me asking for your mailing address!) \ \ Pango Sale \ \ Secondly, Pango Books is having a too-good-to-pass-up promotion in which they are offering $5 off any order of $15+ now through Friday, October 3rd at 11:59 pm PT.\ \ To celebrate this, I am adding all the non-ARC books I need to unhaul on Pango (here I am!) and discounting them all! \ \ Paperbacks will all be $4, and hardcovers will all be $7.\ \ My paperback selection includes: \ \ "The Stolen Book of Evelyn Aubrey" by Serena Burdick\ \ "Daisy Jones & the Six" by Taylor Jenkins Reid \ \ "Head Over Heels" by Hannah Orenstein \ \ "My Year of Rest and Relaxation" by Ottessa Moshfegh \ \ "The Companion" by E.E. Ottoman \ \ While my hardcover titles include: \ \ "The Ministry of Time" by Kaliane Bradley \ \ "The Knockout Queen" by Rufi Thorpe\ \ "Give the Dark My Love" by Beth Revis \ \ "Malibu Rising" by Taylor Jenkins Reid \ \ "The Vanishing Half" by Brit Bennett\ \ All of the above are in "excellent" or "like new" condition, and I am an avid bookmark user. Not a dog-eared page to be found. \ \ I will keep all of these live on Pango through the end of the weekend (Sunday, October 5th), but the platform's promotion ends on Friday. Snap up your wishlist as quick as you can! Any copies I do NOT sell by the end of Sunday will go to Riverby's, then my sister-in-law, then various Little Free Libraries around my area. \ \ Finally, thank you all SO MUCH for your exceptional support as Bindery continues to grow. The app launch this morning was awfully exciting for all of us. (Our poor developers... upon meeting them in person in June, the first words out of my mouth were, "SO A MOBILE APP, UMMMM??") I cannot convey to you how important it is to the Bindery crew, to all of my fellow Tastemakers, and to me that y'all are this awesome. \ \ Cheers, babes. \ \ Join for free or login

[Poll:\ \ Do you read multiple genre or are you a one genre person?\ \

"A feeling of not belonging deepened within her."\ \ \ \ GENRE: Lit Fic\ \ Would I recommend to others?: Yes, I highly recommend this book to gain a perspective into being an Arab, growing up somewhere that isnt your home and understanding what it means to be from two different cultures and never fitting in.\ \ Review: \ \ There's something to be said about being from somewhere but not living there, not fully identifying with what it means to be from there. As an Arab that is mixed and grew up in another Arabic country that wasnt my own, the way Hannah saw this and identified things that were different in Egypt based on what she knew and her perception from her parents\ \ I dont read a lot of Lit Fic anymore but having read this book recently and as an Arab that was living in a country with Arab Spring, it was surreal to read it. The book has an Egyptian-American MCs and this is different than my own situation but I was able to relate to the identity crisis in the book SO much. The way it touches on grief as well, the last words hanging and never getting to change that just reminded me of my own grief journey too\ \ Growing up feeling very much like I never fit in anywhere because I was always too much of this and too little of that everywhere! I'd recommend reading it to understand more about what being an Arab is, how living somewhere that isnt your country just makes you feel misplaced, gives you this feeling of never fitting in anywhere. And the sad thing? Somehow, everyone knows you dont fit in well, or at least that is how it comes off\ \ "He told them to be careful and gave Zain specific directions on what to tell the driver. Their uncle gave them his cell phone. they were adults, but the family treated them like children - teenagers who couldn't fend for themselves - and it waws easy to just accept it."\ \ Oh and the way one of the MCs says that her mom mentions how she "could never live here again" (as in living in Egypt again after moving to America), who hasnt heard this from their own parents after they have migrated to another country?\ \ Dust Settles North touches on so many topics that are important, and one of them is comparing how politically different Egypt and America are, comparing the police actions and the stark different yet how similar they are at the end of the day.\ \ I quite enjoyed Dust Settles North and I did want more but don't we all end stories wanting more from it? I did understand it had to come to an end, but I did wish we could see a bit more of what does happen to Hannah and Zain in the end, tie some of the things around a bit more. I will be reading more of Deena's work in the future and I cannot wait to explore more Arab perspective in fiction!\ \ Thank you to Bindery, Netgalley and Boundless Press for this eArc in exchange for my honest review.](https://cozysabie.binderybooks.com/item/LOMwx29LqUY4rDymCQUD/)
