“Entirely irresistible. Immortal Dark takes the best parts of vampire lore and brings the undying, violent enmity to full throttle. Tigest Girma pushes morally gray fantasy exactly where it needs to go, and you won’t be able to look away.”
―Chloe Gong, #1 New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights.

The Cruel Prince meets Ninth House in this dangerously romantic dark academia fantasy, where a lost heiress must infiltrate an arcane society and live with the handsome vampire she suspects killed her family and kidnapped her sister.
It began long before my time, but something has always hunted our family.
Orphaned heiress Kidan Adane grew up far from the arcane society she was born into, where human bloodlines gain power through vampire companionship. When her sister, June, disappears, Kidan is convinced a vampire stole her—the very vampire bound to their family, the cruel yet captivating Susenyos Sagad.
To find June, Kidan must infiltrate the elite Uxlay University—where students study to ensure peaceful coexistence between humans and vampires and inherit their family legacies. Kidan must survive living with Susenyos—even as he does everything he can to drive her away. It doesn’t matter that Susenyos’s wickedness speaks to Kidan’s own violent nature and tempts her to surrender to a life of darkness. She must find her sister and kill Susenyos at all costs.
When a murder mirroring June’s disappearance shakes Uxlay, Kidan sinks further into the ruthless underworld of vampires, risking her very soul. There she discovers a centuries-old threat—and June could be at the center of it. To save her sister, Kidan must bring Uxlay to its knees and either break free from the horrors of her own actions or embrace the dark entanglements of love—and the blood it requires.

It’s no secret that I love academic fantasy books, so after finding Blood Over Bright Haven I couldn’t help but revisit some of my favorites in the genre.
From magic school concepts to post-graduate research these scholarly fantasy books have the perfect #darkacademia or #lightacademia vibes.
Also, there are definitely at least 20 more books in this category, but these are some of the ones that I’ve loved enough to keep physical copies of ✨

[Look! Week two of me doing something I said I would do! Am I... better than everyone? We shall see...\ \ This Week in the Book World: \ \ Fable hosted their town hall and it was... weird. There was a lot of self-promotion, a weird section where they talked about feature requests, and then very little time spent actually addressing the reason we were all there.\ \ Long story short, they said they're removing the AI for now. However, their founder made it very clear that they will continue to invest in AI in the future. So, while I am staying on the platform for now, that is subject to change.\ \ This week's publishing news: \ \ There were some great horror deals announced this week, and even some from one of my favorite new authors:\ \
- Donyae Coles (Midnight Rooms) announced two new horror novels. The Sunken, The Adored is a historical horror novel about a freed slave and something sinister in the canals of 1700s Venice. What Kills You is a gothic novel about a Black family and the "inescapable realities of poverty".\
- Johnny Compton (The Spite House, Devils Kill Devils) announced a new short story collection called Midnight Somewhere.\
- In debut news, Ruth McKell's Honey in Her Veins is described as a "cottagecore fantasy romance set in Appalachia". This one sounds absolutely incredible and I cannot wait to leanr more!\
- And then in YA news, we had Ravenfield Hall by Leanna Renee, which was pitched as "Rebecca, but written by the Bronte Sisters" about a spirtualist, ghost ships, and robber barons. Say less.\ \ This week's new releases:\ \
- A Sea of Unspoken Things by Adrienne Young (Adult, fiction)\
- All the Water in the World by Eiren Caffall (Adult, distopian)\
- The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan (Adult, ficiton): The Three Lives of Cate Kay is an adrenaline rush of a story that doesn't compromise on sincerity. Whether she is exploring first love, queer identity, female friendship, or self-forgiveness, Fagan leaves everything on the page and delivers a novel that demands to be deeply felt by its readers.\ \ What I read this week: \ \ Immortal Dark (Finished)\ \ We all know I’m forever in my vampire era–especially after seeing Nosferatu–and this is one of the most unique vampire books I’ve ever read. Immortal Dark marries dark academia with Ethiopian-inspired vampire lore. The characters, the magic system, and Uxlay University are so well thought-out and complex. Plus, this Romantasy is true enemies-to-lovers in a way that felt substantial, but didn’t cross a line too far into bully romance.\ \ PS: I would say this one is definitely upper YA/new adult with some content that may be a bit too much for younger teens.\ \ The Sirens (Finished)\ \ I adore Emilia Hart. Her debut novel, Weyward was one of my favorite debuts of the last few years, and this one was just as wonderful. A family mystery, siren lore, women protecting women, and history all wrapped into one. I just finished this one today and haven't collected my thoughts yet, so more to come!\ \ Fagin the Thief (52%)\ \ Similar to Emilia Hart, Allison Epstein is one of my favorite authors of the last few years. If you haven't read any of her books, I suggest starting with A Tip for the Hangman, which absolutely destroyed me emotioanlly in the same way Song of Achilles did. I'm about 52% through this one and am ready to be hurt again.\ \ Elatsoe (22%)\ \ I just started this one today! It's our mostly fantasy book club pick for January (join here if you w ant), which is great, because it's a backlist pick that's been on my TBR for years. I had no idea this one had so much magic in it! I thought it was just Elatsoe, but there's vampires, fae, and all kinds of other creatures. I can't wait to get further in.\ \ What I bought/shelved \ \ This week was all about mermaids, sirens, and selkies. I posted this thread and go so many recs that I spun up an entire list of books. You can check the full list out in this post , but here are some that I was particulary drawn to:\ \
- Upon a Starlit Tide by Kell Woods (Totally forgot she had a mermaid book coming out!)\
- In the Veins of the Drowning by Kalie Cassidy\
- Called to the Deep by Desiree M. Niccoli\ \ This is a non-mermaid book, but here's another one I shelved the other day\ \
- Unhallowed Halls by Lili Wilkinson\ \ Other musings: \ \ In none book news, my husband and I started playing It Takes Two on xb0x and it's so fun!! We have been absolutely cackling over this one and our many failed attempts (i.e. deaths) at some of the puzzles and challenges. If you like couch co-op games, this is one of the best ones I've played in years!\ \ Join the Discord! It will be fun, I promise!\ \ Become a paid subscriber! [Hi friends! Two posts from me in one day? What is this madness? Is this truly a new year, new me situation? In order to keep myself accountable for posting, I'm hoping to do these weekly wrap ups where I can chat random topics in the book world, book news, and–of course–talk about what I have been reading.\ \ These will be lowkey and I hope to post them every Sunday. Keep me accountable friends! I'll also be posting prompts in the discord for you all to chime in on in the Discord. Yes, I am reviving the Discord from the grave.\ \ Now enough rambling, let's get to the meat of this thing.\ \ This week in the book world: \ \ There's no way I can write this post without talking about the Fable/Gen AI scandal, because woof. In case you missed it, popular reading/book club app Fable came under some very-deserved fire when multiple users encountered reader racist/bigoted reader summaries. This was first brought to my attention by Tiana's Lit Talk on Threads, but then several other readers began posting other screenshots. Fable initially posted this very lack luster apology where they basically said "we're a small baby and are experimenting with gen-AI, don't be mad at us pls".\ \ This is when I learned that most folks don't actually know that Fable is actually a large Silicon Valley startup owned by a literal billlionaire. I won't go into detail more on that again, but if you want to read my threads write-up, you can do so here. Readers and users continued to push back on Fable, starting in no unclear terms that they do not want AI anywhere near their reading apps and in a, frankly shocking, turn of events Fable posted another apology and announced that they are removing all AI features from the app. Score one for reader? Eh. Maybe not. We shall see.\ \ I personally have decided to wait until after their townhall happening tomorrow evening (1/6) to decide whether or not I will continue to use the app. If they lay out a plan that feels adequate and is endorsed by those directly harmed, then I have no problem continuing to use the platform with the renewed hope that maybe people actually can change?\ \ This week's new releases/publishing news: \ \ We're still in the post-holiday publishing slump, so there really wasn't anything that came out this week, nor were there any particulary exciting deal alerts. Things pick up starting next week with some insanely good weeks coming towards the end of the month.\ \ What I read this week: \ \ The Bear and the Nightingale (Finished)\ \ I finished my first read of the year and, honestly, what a wonderful way to start. This was our first Mostly Fantasy Book Club pick and I loved it. I know this is not a new take, so forgive me for being so late to the party. I will be getting book 2, but I thought the ending of this one was so satisfying that I'll probably let it sit for a bit.\ \ Immortal Dark (70%)\ \ This is my current audiobook pick and, holy shit, this is DARK. I am really, really loving it, because vampires are my favorite, but I was not expecting it to be quite as dark. It's also surprisingly steamy, which makes me curious about the decision to publish it as YA. Please don't come for me about how it's okay for YA books to have sex, because I agree with you, I just think this could have easily been packaged as an adult romantasy with college-aged characters (i.e. Alex Stern series). Because I'm not going to lie, there's been a few moments that have made me blush...\ \ Fagin the Thief (6%)\ \ I have to finish this book tonight, so I can blurb it for Indie Next, because I procrastinated big time. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers.\ \ What I bought/shelved this week: \ \ A Sweet Sting of Salt\ \ I'm sorry, but no one told me this was a sapphic retelling for the Selkie myth!!!\ \ Beyond the Aching Door\ \ This author did an excellent job with the marketing in this thread. Instantly added this one to my TBR.\ \ Other musings: \ \ If you got this far, thanks so much for reading! A few additional reminders:\ \
- Join the Discord! I know it's not super active right now, but I may be transitioning book club to there in the future.\
- Become a paid subscriber! Friends, I love chatting books on the internet, but this does take a lot of work. So, if you are in a financial state where you can spare a few $$ a month, you can help me continue to produce content and also afford to buy a coffee made by a barista.](https://notsowellread.binderybooks.com/item/XGj5n8G8vTI6ticlA928/)

[Hello Friends,\\

I just returned from a long weekend in San Diego. My bestie and I planned a **Hozier+Bookish Babe Weekend:** Hozier, Cafes and Cute Bookshops.\\

I bought so many books that I essentially spent my 2025 book budget. I will link the books I bought here. Godly Heathens and Merciless Saviors is \*\*YA Indigenous speculative fiction \*\*no one has been talking about (because they fell under Wednesday books, SMP Imprint) I am excited to finally be able to read and discuss them!\\

I am hosting a **Readathon** THIS WEEKEND! Friday-Sunday. We are old here, so we are including sleep! We will have a special chat channel set up in the Discord to chat about what we are reading when we are ready for a scroll break. You can join the discord here:\\

We are counting down to **NEW YORK**! I will be in NYC for the Bindery Books release party. I arrive 10/13 and will fly home on 10/21. Give me all your NYC recommendations below!\\
\\
I am both trying to read **100 books before the end of the year and slow down enough to do written reviews for paid subscribers, starting out with the books I've finished for Indigenous Book Bingo.** I have finished 3 books so far and I'm reading a fourth now! How many have you read so far?\\
