High school is rough for a gay teen brujo going through his first breakup. And Alejandro's supernatural ability to see the past with the use of his tarot cards makes it so the past is all he ever really focuses on.
Alejandro would like to pour his passion into piano to prepare for the upcoming winter recital, but bizarre supernatural forces seem out to get him. When a time-traveling demon arrives with a mission to stop the upcoming high school winter recital from taking place, Alejandro must focus on the future to slay the demon, save the recital, and maybe get a second chance at love.

“The Brujos of Borderland High” by Gume Laurel III: Review
“The Brujos of Borderland High” by Gume Laurel III is an absolute delight from start to finish. As a grump myself, I found Alejandro incredibly relatable, and his ability to see the past through tarot cards added a unique layer to his character. The contemporary world seamlessly blended with a magical realm where beings like Alejandro are the norm, making the setting both familiar and fantastically original. Zander, with his sunny disposition, provided the perfect counterbalance to Alejandro’s grumpiness, and their dynamic was heartwarming and sweet. The mystery of the time-traveling demon and its mission to sabotage the high school winter recital added a thrilling layer of tension that kept me hooked, eager to unravel the supernatural forces at play.
What truly stood out to me was how fun and engaging this book was. The verse format felt modern and fresh, perfectly complementing the story and making it accessible for teens who might not typically enjoy reading. The pacing was excellent, and despite the third act’s resolution being a bit too easy, it fit well with the overall narrative and the story it aimed to tell. Alejandro’s journey from being stuck in the past to focusing on the future, slaying demons, saving the recital, and finding a second chance at love was captivating. I devoured the book in one sitting, thoroughly enjoying the magical adventure and the charming relationship between Alejandro and Zander. “The Brujos of Borderland High” is a must-read for anyone looking for a fun, unique, and heartwarming queer YA novel.
