[Now that I'm doing weekly reading roundups on Mondays, it doesn't really make sense to do a fave of the week on Fridays. I don't know exactly what I'm gonna do yet (I KNOW it doesn't have to be the same every week. But my brain does not! It likes routines!), but today I've got my June wrap up and a look forward at some books I hope to pick up in July. (Books marked with a \* were gifted to me and books marked with a ^ I was paid to read.)\\
\\
For June reads, it's no surprise that all my faves (starred) were books I read for Pride Reading Bingo. Queer books forever!\\
\\
\\
\\
THE QUARTER QUEEN^\\
\\
WHY ARE PEOPLE INTO THAT?\\
\\
LONDON FALLING\*\\
\\
⭐️ SEVEN DEVILS\\
\\
ESCALA'S WISH^\\
\\
⭐️ THE MAIDENHEADS\*\\
\\
DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL (reread)\\
\\
⭐️ SEASONS OF GLASS AND IRON\*\\
\\
DIVERGENT (reread)\\
\\
POOL HOUSE\*\\
\\
LOVE IS AN EX-COUNTRY\\
\\
RAISING ARTEMIS^\\
\\
THE FOREST ON THE EDGE OF TIME\*\\
\\
⭐ ONE OF THE BOYS\*\\
\\
DEATH OF THE AUTHOR\*\\
\\
⭐ SHAPES OF LOVE\*\\
\\
* * *\\
\\
Here's what's on deck for July. (Ish...you know how that mood reading life goes.)\\
\\
\\
\\
**MOSS'D IN SPACE\* - This is the July Found Family Book Club pick!**\\
\\
CHAOS\* - This space romance series is a fave of mine and I've been saving this latest installment for when I needed a treat.\\
\\
MAKE ME BETTER\* - Gailey is a fave author and normally I would have gobbled this up by now but for some reason I thought it was a fall release and therefore I didn't prioritize the ARC. Whoops!\\
\\
BLACK SALT QUEEN\* - I've been meaning to read this fantasy about royalty, romance, and betrayal for awhile and the sequel recently came out so I better get to it!\\
\\
I LOVE YOU DON'T DIE\* - I'd intended to read this for Pride Bingo and didn't get there. I adored Song's debut CHLORINE and am looking forward to more of that.\\
\\
THIS PRINCESS KILLS MONSTERS\* - Another Pride Bingo fail. I've been very into cozy, comedic fantasy lately so I'm ready to wrap myself up in this one.\\
\\
OUT OF STEP, INTO YOU\* - The last of my Pride Bingo intendeds. I thought Burch's debut YA novel a few years ago was seriously underrated, so watch out for me yelling about this one soon.\\
\\
**Books I'm carrying over from June:** My current reads are Love In A F-cked Up World by Dean Spade and Coldwire\* by Chloe Gong.\\
\\
**Other miscellaneous July reads:** I run an in-person book club that reads spicy books and I our July pick is The Pairing by Casey McQuiston, which will be a reread for me. I also read the first chapter of Murder In The Dressing Room\* by Holly Star yesterday. There will be other audiobooks because I can't commute without them, but I haven't picked any yet.\\
\\
Is that a packed enough TBR for you or what!\\

[Happy Friday, and happy Juneteenth! I hope you will consider donating to a Black-led cause or organization near you today, especially if you're a white person with the day off work. \\
\\
My favorite read this week was **Seasons of Glass and Iron** by Amal El-Mohtar. I know this is quite a shock considering I have literally tattooed This Is How You Lose The Time War onto my body, lol. \\
\\
This book is a short story collection, which I often have a hard time with because I want more time in each story's world. But El-Mohtar is so good at spinning up perfect, tiny little universes in just a few paragraphs. Sure, I wanted some of these to go on longer, but that's just me being greedy.\\
\\
I think what draws me to her writing is how ethereal it is. The descriptions of the settings are so gorgeous, and even when the action doesn't make Earth-bound logical sense, I'm willing to follow it. That's probably actually why I'm willing to follow it, actually, because I often have no idea where things are going to go.\\
\\
El-Mohtar does bring the real world into some of the stories. There are a few that focus on queer and/or Arab experiences that weave the magic into the heartbreak.\\
\\
I just love her so much. I hope you'll pick this book up, even if short stories aren't usually your jam.\\

\\
My non-bo0kish fave this week is that I went to my cousin's wedding last weekend. It was held up in the mountains and we stayed in a lakeside cabin, and then we danced our butts off at the reception. I just love weddings so much, especially when it's some of my favorite people getting married. I made my spouse take a zillion photos with me because we never get dressed up anymore, so please enjoy, haha.\\

[17 books that make me feel seen because ...](https://cozysabie.binderybooks.com/item/CeBMhdOI2yZN3SRFZ1cC/)

Is there any book(s) that you feel makes you seen? 👀

Books that make me feel seen belong to a lot of categories, including those that focus on found family, cozy fantasy and retellings. A lot of the themes that tie this books together are finding a place where you belong, having our stories told with the beauty and fairness they deserve and being accepted wholly for who you are 🤎

Each of this piles carry books that are in different genres, including Cozy Fantasy, Romance, Retellings and Anthologies to name a few but I saw myself in each of them! Sometimes it was the representation like Aicha, being a Moroccan Retelling as someone who is from there or a Muslim Romance in The Mis-Arrangement of Sanaa Saeed! I also saw alot of my struggles as a disabled/CI in Its all in your Head and there’s a piece of my in all of these books🥺

And the STEM field Related books will always have a special place in my heart because of how relatable it is as someone who works in the field!

[Seasons of Glass and Iron: An Anthology focusing on Identity, who we are and where is home](https://cozysabie.binderybooks.com/item/R0eztLViV2I6J3xskwUY/)

Do you enjoy short stories and anthologies? 🤎

I do have to admit that I havent read many anthologies and this year, I’ve made it a goal to explore some so when I heard Amal El-Mohtar is publishing one I knew I had to get my hands on it and it did not disappoint!

There are a variations of short stories and poems in here and my favourite two are A Hollow Play and The Truth about Owls

A Hollow Play addresses Identity and who we are. It talks about what we consider home and whether some parts of us are stronger in some places as opposed to others. Do we then choose the place where we can be the parts we enjoy and love the most? Does this change over time?

The Truth about Owls dives into so many themes, with a focus on belonging and how language fits into that. I loved the fact that we get to see our narrator in this story use three languages and thought it was beautifully displayed. It reminded me so much of a quote from Weavingshaw and a quote Heba Al-Wasity (author of Weavingshaw) wrote that I linked to the short story here!

I cant wait to read more by Amal El-Mohtar as I’ve read The River has Root last year but I’ve still got This is how you lose the Time War!👀

Thank you to @quercusbooks for the Finished Copy in exchange for my honest opinion!

This is a new series where I attempt to find as many new Tuesday releases as I can in the science fiction categories, which include speculative fiction, dystopian, time travel, robots/AI, steampunk, postapocalptic, LitRPG, ya sci-fi, LGBTQ sci-fi, afrofuturism, sci-fi horror, alien romance, and anything else I feel could be your gateway drug into the genre.\\
\\
**In Time With You by Kristin Dwyer** (St. Martin's Press) - Time travel romance. A girl's first love drowns, and she wakes up a year before and tries to stop it from happening while falling for his best friend. Is it really sci-fi? IDK that time travel speculative fiction is technically sci-fi, but if you're a romance girlie and this is how I get you to jump into sci-fi? Call me a gateway drug pusher. Get in the spaceship bitch.\\
\\
**Celestian Lights by Cecile Pin** (MacMillan) - An astronaut born the day Challenger fell out of the sky gets tapped by an "enterprising" billionaire (we are already suspicious, but go on...) to lead a mission to Europa, and spends the whole journey retreating into his past - relationships lost, becoming a husband and father, the usual spiral. Literary sci-fi, less hard science more human condition, which is either your thing or it isn't. Cecile Pin's previous book _Wandering Souls_ was Women's Prize longlisted and reportedly destroyed people emotionally, so if you enjoy a book that makes you question every choice you've ever made while also being in space, this one's for you.\\
\\
**Children of Strife by Adrian Tchaikovsky** (Orbit) - Book 4 in Children of Time. Spiders in space, a mantis shrimp captain, humans trying to figure out what happened to a lost colony. If you haven't started this series and you love diverse found-family crews doing impossible things...well me either but if you have will you please tell me if it's worth starting a hugely thicc series?\\
\\
**Seasons of Glass and Iron: Stories by Amal El-Mohtar** (Macmillan) - Short story collection from the co-author of _This Is How You Lose the Time War._ Described as "fairy tales with teeth." I was obsessed with TIHYLTTW and El-Mohtar's other work hasn't been for me but has won many awards, so I still continuously give it a chance.\\
\\
**Deep Black by Miles Cameron** (Simon & Schuster) - Book 2 in the Arcana Imperii space opera series - being re-released with a new cover in paperback. Black MC, autistic-coded love interest, nonbinary secondary character, queernorm setting. But the author is a white Canadian dude. His name is Christian Cameron but his Sci-fi pen name is Miles Cameron. He is on Bluesky as @phokion.bsky.social so do your own research. Described as perfect for fans of Tchaikovsky and The Expanse. I've read neither...should I? Let me know.\\
\\
**Trace Elements by Jo Walton & Ada Palmer** (Macmillan) Two award winning sci-fi authors have a conversation about modern SFF, how it's written and how it's read. So this is sort of a nonfic sci-fi subgenre. "Subjects covered include...the implicit contract between author and reader, the ways SF and fantasy disguise themselves as one another, what SF&F can learn from outside influences ranging from Shakespeare to Diderot to anime, the role of complicity in reading, the need to expand our “sphere of empathy”, and finally the need for optimism, the importance of rejecting “purity” culture, and the fact that the human story for centuries to come will be composed of hard work." This sounds like everything I stand for so I will probably read this even though a book about books is way outside my wheelhouse.\\
\\
I want you to notice that instead of putting the Imprint publisher, I'm listing them under their Big 5. Why? I want to continuously drive the point home that it's a damn _monopoly_ and the only way to fight it is to support indie presses and authors. So here is my shameless plug:\\
\\
_If you liked this and want more of whatever THIS is — unhinged book analysis, barely contained rage at the state of the world, and occasional Tamsyn Muir references that I will never apologize for — consider subscribing for $5/month. Every cent goes to people who actually need it, because I have a day job and a cause, not a brand deal. This is my middle finger to Big 5 publishing, dressed up as a book blog. Come hold it up with me._](https://tattooedbibliophile.binderybooks.com/item/UnEoWZEggDs9voknlvzU/)
