He's not like other dukes…

Paris, 1889

Physician Aurora Montalban Wright takes risks in her career, but never with her heart. Running an underground women’s clinic exposes her to certain dangers, but help arrives in the unexpected form of the infuriating Duke of Annan. Begrudgingly, Aurora accepts his protection, then promptly finds herself in his bed.

New to his role as a duke, Apollo César Sinclair Robles struggles to embrace his position. With half of society waiting for him to misstep and the other half looking to discredit him, Apollo never imagined that his enthralling bedmate would become his most trusted adviser. Soon, he realizes the rebellious doctor could be the perfect duchess for him. But Aurora won’t give up her independence, and her secrets make her unsuitable for the aristocracy.

When dangerous figures from their pasts return to threaten them, Apollo whisks Aurora away to the French Riviera. Far from the reproachful eye of Parisian society, can Apollo convince Aurora that their bond is stronger than the forces keeping them apart?

Can’t get enough of the Las Leonas?

\ \ I'm finally ready to share my pics for my 2025 bookish awards! These are some of the books I was most entertained by last year and I hope y'all will give them a try.\ \ The award for "Book I Couldn't Put Down" goes to You Should Have Been Nicer To My Mom by Vincent Tirado!\ \ \ \ The drama was delicious and I felt so seen by the storytelling. For those who have read my previous reviews, this probably isn't surprising to you!\ \ ......\ \ The award for "Book I'm Still Thinking About" goes to A Tropical Rebel Gets the Duke by Adriana Herrera! \ \ \ \ Some folks may be surprised by the fact that I chose a Romance novel for this award, but IYKYK. This Historical Romance uses the context surrounding our MC's stories in such a powerful way that you might have to sit with yourself for a little while when you finish reading it.\ \ ......\ \ I've got a three-way tie for the "Spiciest Romances" of 2025:\ \ I Accidentally Hooked Up With A Vampire by Jessica Cage, Blood & Brujas by Mikayla D. Hornedo, and All Superheroes Need Photo Ops by Elizabeth Stephens. \ \ \ \ This was a hard decision to make and I almost threw in I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I'm Trapped in a Rom-Com by Kimberly Lemming for good measure. These novels had me speechless (many times)!! If you haven't read anything by these authors (and Kimberly Lemming), I suggest you add their backlogs, babes.\ \ .......\ \ My indecision plagued me for my "Most Fun To Read" books of 2025, too. I ultimately went with A Man for Mrs. Claus by Rebekah Weatherspoon, A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna, and The Princess and The P.I. by Nikki Payne.\ \ \ \ These authors had me kicking my feet, giggling, and getting butterflies all story long! They gave me mystery, yearning, and safe spaces.\ \ .........\ \ Despite that, I have to say that my choice for "Coziest Novel" of the year goes to Only Lovers in the Building by Nadine Gonzalez.\ \ \ \ I'm a sucker for found family, but add in the location, the romance, and the beautiful writing and I'm sold. This Afro-Latina represented us so well!\ \ ......\ \ Last but definitely not least, my award for "Most Surprising Stories" of 2025 goes to:\ \ Blood Slaves by Markus Redmond, When The Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida Kelley, Lucha of the Forgotten Spring by Tehlor Kay Mejia, and Beasts of Carnaval by Rosália Rodrigo.\ \ \ \ These were the stories I didn't know I wanted! They were original, vivid, and kept me hooked. They may not be everyone's cup of tea but they hit just right for me.\ \ ..........\ \ Thank you to all of the authors who worked so hard to write these books and get them out in the world. They've brought readers (and librarians) like me outlets to rage, feel safe, and find ourselves. Keep doing what you're doing because it matters!](https://bookish-afrolatina.binderybooks.com/item/LrOsz1CACPDfE6bhjcc3/)

Bookish UNO!!

I saw @browningwithabook ‘s Bookish UNO post and felt inspired so here’s my take!

Reverse: A book I wish I could read again for the first time. A Tropical Rebel gets the Duke by Adriana Herrera This Afro-Latine historical romance had me in a chokehold since I read it! Not only is the FMC a badass but the MMC will do anything to give her the softness she deserves.

Wild: A book I’ve read that was outside of my usual genre preferences. A Sunny Place For Shady People by Mariana Enriquez Before reading this book of short stories, I wasn’t really a big fan of horror (or short stories). This author changed my mind! It turns out, I enjoy horror that has roots in magical realism.

Skip: A book I keep putting off. Out of Office by A.H. Cunningham I started reading this book a while ago but haven’t gotten back to it because I don’t like the audiobook narrators for this story. I’m determined to just read the physical copy this month because I enjoy A.H. Cunningham’s writing.

Draw 2: Two random books on my TBR Flood City by Daniel José Older and You’ve Got a Place Here, Too: An Anthology of Black Love Stories Set at HBCUs edited by Ebony LaDelle I’m a fan of both Daniel José Older and Ebony LaDelle, so I’m hoping to get into these books before the end of the year.

I’m tagging @tomesandtextiles @carla_is_reading @whatupsisi to try the #UNOBookChallenge

\ \ Here are three books by authors with roots in the Caribbean that I wanna highlight today:\ \ • Land of Love and Drowning by Tiphanie Yanique 🇻🇮\ \ Yanique is a novelist, poet, essayist, short story writer, and professor who was born in the U.S. Virgin Islands.\ \ Her novel follows the Bradshaw family from 1916 through the 1970s, beginning with three siblings with magical gifts who are orphaned by a shipwreck.\ \ Y’all know I love a good multi-generational epic, especially when magic is involved! I picked up this book about a month ago and hope to begin reading it soon.\ \ •A Tropical Rebel Gets the Duke by Adriana Herrera 🇩🇴\ \ Herrera is an Afro-Dominican author born & raised in the Caribbean.\ \ The last book in her Las Léonas series brings a repressed physician & an infuriating Duke together in an explosive historical romance set in 19th century Paris.\ \ I cannot recommend this book enough! The characters are complex, the history is fascinating, and the love story is extra steamy.\ \ • When Javi Dumped Mari by Mia Sosa 🇧🇷🇵🇷\ \ Sosa is an Afro-Latina author of rom-coms with roots in Brazil & Puerto Rico. Her most recent release delivers a hilarious slow-burn like no other!\ \ Javi & Mari have been besties pining for one another since sophomore year of college, almost a decade ago. Just as Javi feels he is finally worthy of Mari’s love, she invites him to be the man of honor in her wedding to a man she started dating for less than a year.\ \ I finished reading this book a couple of days ago & I loved it! There were so many quips that made me cackle & the tension between the MCs was palpable.\ \ Have you read any of these books? What Caribbean book would you recommend to me?\ [ID: TEXT - 3 book recs for Read Caribbean MONTH. A brown hand holds up Land of Love and Drowning by Tiphanie Yanique, A Tropical Rebel Gets the Duke by Adriana Herrera, and When Javi Dumped Mari by Mia Sosa in front of a blurred but colorful bookshelf. \ \ Whenever I'm feeling hopeless, I try to to find something to look forward to like a get together with my friends or a new book. Since my friends and I haven't been able to hangout consistently for a bit, I've been leaning more into purchasing books from bookshops like SteamyLit and websites like Bookshop.org and Thriftbooks. I also won a giveaway! Here are the books I got recently:\ \ Be a Revolution: How Everyday People Are Fighting Oppression and Changing the World—and How You Can, Too by Ijeoma Oluo \ \ This title is self-explanatory. My hope is that this will give me strength. Oluo is also great writer and storyteller! I enjoyed her other books So You Want To Talk About Race and Mediocre, so I'm sure I'll love this one.\ \ Star Child: A Biographical Constellation of Octavia Estelle Butler by Ibi Zoboi \ \ As a lover of all things Octavia E. Butler, this purchase was a no-brainer! Ibi Zoboi weaves poetry, short essays, and primary sources in this small package. I'll likely be reading this book before the end of March.\ \ I Got Abducted by Aliens and Now I'm Trapped in a Rom-Com by Kimberly Lemming \ \ I have read and love just about every book by Kimberly Lemming! In fact, I read the arc for this once back in January and have been singing its praises ever since. When I finally had a little cash to spend, I knew I wanted my own copy of this hilariously ridiculous and hot story.\ \ We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance by Kellie Carter Jackson \ \ Last month, I attended a Black History event where Kellie spoke about her book and historical heroes which spurred me to purchase her book. As with Oluo's book, I'm hoping this will give me strength and maybe help me work through my own anxieties about our time.\ \ Destiny's Embrace by Beverly Jenkins \ \ Whenever I'm looking for Black joy, I find Beverly Jenkins's books especially suited to my needs. As I Black Latina, I'm often seen as "resilient" and "strong," which can get tiring when all I want is to be given grace and comfort. So here's to self-care!\ \ Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor \ \ I've been hearing a lot of great things about this book! Okorafor's website describes it as "a book-within-a-book that blends the line between writing and being written, Death of the Author is a masterpiece of metafiction." All of that sounds intriguing as hell to me!\ \ Blood & Brujas by Mikayla D. Hornedo \ \ My girl, Carla (@carla_is_reading) has been raving about this book and when I saw the special edition pop up on SteamyLit's website, I was sold. From what I've learned, this is a sapphic fantasy packed with brujas (of course), vampires, and intrigue. Yes, please!\ \ We Belong: an All-Black/All-Queer Sci-fi/Fantasy Comics Anthology edited by William O. Tyler and Viktor T. Kerney \ \ Once again, I was influenced! Fareeha of @fairlyoddfareeha recommended this book on her YouTube shorts dedicated to Black Queer Comics and I knew I had to check it out. Follow her on Bindery here: https://fairlyqueer.binderybooks.com/about/\\ \ Purchase here: https://stackeddeckpress.com/product/we-belong-the-all-black-all-lgbtq-sci-fi-and-fantasy-comics-anthology/\\ \ Black Apocalypse: Afrofuturism at The End of the World by Tavia Nyong'o \ \ I'll be honest, I don't fully remember how I stumbled upon this book. The title grabbed my attention and so did this description: " Juxtaposing the world-building of afrofuturism and the world-negating of afropessimism to show how both movements have offered us critical resources of hope." Since I've been struggling with pushing myself out of the pessimism that's been sticking to me since last fall, I feel like this might bring me out.\ \ Las Leonas Series by Adriana Herrera \ \ I won this gorgeous set of books in a giveaway and I'm in love. Adriana is one of my favorite authors of all time and this series solidified that for me. It's wonderful to have the full set of the new covers since my copies of the first two books don't match. She also sent me the original art for each of the covers, which was so damn sweet of her!!\ \ I'm extremely grateful to have been able to purchase and/or receive these books. I feel a sense of pride having them and know that they will all bring me wisdom.\ \ Join for free or login](https://bookish-afrolatina.binderybooks.com/item/v3vfaU9H7SymEs0CuQm3/)

BOOK REVIEW: A Tropical Rebel Gets The Duke

🎉Happy Pub Day to @ladriana_herrera's A Tropical Rebel gets the Duke! Make sure y'all get a copy of this amazing book.🎉

Here's my review:

This is now my favorite book of the Leonas series & absolutely one of my favorite reads of 2025 already!! Adriana Herrera brings us an amazingly smart & resilient heroine finding the love she deserves with a head-strong, passionate, and dedicated man who will never stop fighting systems of oppression.

Aurora's background hit me hard & I related a lot to her feelings of abandonment and shame. Something that brought me a lot of joy was the way Herrera showed the truth about being a Black woman, forced to put up a shield and take any hits that come our way; we need tenderness and care and love. We deserve to be adored, too.

The chemistry between Aurora and Apollo is off the charts!! These two can't keep their hands off of each other. I think that this is probably the most explicit of the three books, too, but I might reread them all just to make sure! *NO SPOILERS HERE!*

A Tropical Rebel gets the Duke is an important book for an important time.

Content Warnings: descriptions of grooming, racism, sexism, medical procedures, and assault.

[ID: Slide 1: Book Cover for A Tropical Rebel Gets The Duke by Adriana Herrera in the center. The book is purple with a golden frame and lavender around the title. A dark-skinned black woman stands in a yellow dress as she gazes up at a light brown-skinned man in a dark suit. They hold each other. Below the title is a small skyline of Paris. Along the sides of the book cover, purple text over a yellow background reads: BOOK REVIEW. @BOOKISH_AFROLATINA. Slide 2: The same as slide 1 but the book cover is darkened with the book review text over it in black and white.]
