“Kennedy Ryan pours her whole soul into everything she writes, and it makes for books that are heart-searing, sensual, and life affirming.” —EMILY HENRY
Hendrix Barry lives a fabulous life. She has phenomenal friends, a loving family, and a thriving business that places her in the entertainment industry's rarefied air. Your vision board? She’s probably living it. She’s a woman with goals, dreams, ambitions—always striving upward.
And in the midst of everything, she's facing her toughest challenge yet: caring for an aging parent. Who has time for romance? From her experience, there's a low ROI on relationships. She hasn't met the man who can keep up with her anyway. Until...him.
Tech mogul Maverick Bell is a dilemma wrapped in an exquisitely tailored suit and knee-melting charm. From their first charged glance at the summer's hottest party, Hendrix feels like she’s met her match. Only he can’t be. Mav may be the first to make her feel this seen and desired and appreciated, but he’s the last one she can have. Forbidden fruit is the juiciest, and this man is off limits if she plans to stay the course she’s set for herself.
But when Maverick gives chase—pursuing her, spoiling her, understanding her—is it time to let herself have something more?
“One of the finest romance writers of our age.” –Entertainment Weekly

[I mean how much cooler does it get? It’s a bookstore and a bar.\ \ About Book Club Bar \ \
Book Club Bar opened in November 2019 and serves as a community hub of the East Village: a new kind of independent bookstore featuring top-notch cocktails, beer, wine, and coffee. Owners Erin Neary and Nat Esten have been proud to call the East Village home for over a decade. This spirited and dynamic neighborhood is reflected in the store: from the cozy living room-feel decor, to curated book inventory, locally roasted coffee, and NY state craft beers.\ \ I loved the vibes and lighting in this store.\ \ \ \ Book Club Bar menu featured literary themed drinks.\ \ \ \ The shelves were full of books that ranged in genre.\ \ \ \ There’s never a bad time to see Kennedy Ryan’s Skyland series. \ \ \ \ I loved this spot and next time I’ll have to grab a drink! \ \

[I love book signings. The volume of books signed to me shows just how vast my collection is. I enjoy the whole experience: meeting authors, talking with fellow readers and swapping book recommendations.\ \ \ \ When I returned from Tennessee, I ventured to Pocket Books in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.\ \
Pocket Books ‘is an eclectic feminist bookstore owned & operated by three besties with a passion for great literature.’\ \ \ \ It’s a beautiful spot with a great curation of books and merch.\ \ \ \ Megan Becker was celebrating the release of her newest novel, Band Mates. She was in conversation with Lindsay Hameroff. They were great together and were so funny. I laughed a lot during their talk.\ \ About Band Mates \ \ By all appearances, Mia Montgomery has it all: a successful career in music, a great apartment in L.A., and Julie-her best friend since kindergarten. What Mia doesn't have is the man she's been in love with since they were teenagers: Julie's brother, Elliott.\ \ Mia expects to spend a trip home writing new songs for her band and reconnecting with Julie. But then there's Elliott, shirtless in the kitchen of his parents' house on her first night back, and it doesn't take him long to suggest a mutually beneficial arrangement while Mia's in town.\ \ Torn between a decades-old promise to Julie, a growing friendship with Elliott's daughter, and her own desires, Mia navigates the complexities of pursuing anything with Elliott-especially when they both seem all too willing to break the rules they've put in place.\ \ Will Mia and Elliott finally drum up a romance?\ \ Or will their well-orchestrated plans hit all the wrong notes?\ \ After their talk, Megan and Lindsay were available to sign their books.\ \

[Poll:\ \ Are any of these on your TBR?\ \ Hi nerds,\ \ Last night we held our second installment of the Sunny's Salon—a monthly addition to our event programming that is like a book club with no assigned reading. We kicked off the night by doing a 15 minute reading sprint with some lofi music playing in the background and then went into a larger discussion centered around or Last, Now, and Next. It was so fun hearing about what people were reading or had on their radar (weirdly three people wanted to read Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh next) and seeing where reading taste overlapped and differed. Below you will find 50 (!) book recommendations gathered from the Yuma community.\ \ \ \

\ \ If you've been wondering where I've been, my usual response is: reading, working, worrying, writing, gaming, and probably watching tv. This time, there's a twist: I went to a Pride festival for the very first time. You might even say it was "Baby's First Pride!" I had a great time and felt super affirmed in that space so I will be going to one more Pride event this weekend to acquire more good vibes.\ \ \ \ Of course, I've also been reading books on my tbr (physical & virtual). Aren't y'all proud?! Earlier this month, inspiration struck and I finally finished a chapter of the murder mystery book I'm working on where the Abuela solves crimes. I plotted out 25 chapters and also fleshed out the characters more, which felt amazing!\ \ \ \ Despite all of this, my mind has still been on Palestine and the rest of the train wreck that has been playing out in US news like the ICE raids, offenses against libraries, protests, and more. If you are able, please donate to this campaign: https://gofund.me/aefe13af\\ \ \ \ Speaking of train wrecks, I've also been watching Love Island USA because sometimes you need to escape into someone else's drama for a minute. Invasion and Apothecary Diaries have also been great distractions.\ \ \ \ My favorite updates have been these awesome ARCs and Pre-Orders that arrived over the past few weeks. I pre-ordered were:\ \
- Along Came Amor by Alexis Daria\ \
- All Super-Heroes Need PR by Elizabeth Stephens\ \
- A special edition of That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming\ \
- Can't Get Enough by Kennedy Ryan\ \
- This Could Be Forever by Ebony LaDelle\ \ \ My ARCs are:\ \
- As You Wish by Leesa Cross-Smith\ \
- Authentic: The Myth of Bringing Your Full Self to Work by Jodi-Ann Burey\ \ \ \ \ So far, I've read 4 out of the 7 books listed!\ \ It's been a rough June, but I expect I'll have to update y'all like this for the rest of the year, tbh. sigh\ \ What have y'all been up to?\ \ Join for free or login](https://bookish-afrolatina.binderybooks.com/item/JD6GfxdblwWoOqrjQNUy/)

My May Reading Wrap-Up is overdue!
My May Reading Wrap-Up is overdue! I read 10 books last month & here are my thoughts:
Destiny’s Captive by Beverly Jenkins I was fascinated by the last book in the Destiny series! Years after he was Shanghaied* off the coast of California, he is the captain of his own ship (named for his mother Alanza). As a pirate working to liberate Cuba, Pilar chooses the Alanza as her crew’s next target. I had never really learned about these experiences before, so it was awesome that one of my favorite authors introduced it to me in this book. Their chemistry is hot, of course, but the characters and their backstories are what kept me locked in. *Being Shanghaied meant that a person was put aboard a ship by force often with the help of liquor or a drug to work as sailors.
Love and Sportsball by Meka James This is a sweet & spicy romance inspired by the Black American classic, Love and Basketball. I enjoyed the chemistry the leads had w/ each other & the emphasis on clear communication. It was a fun book but the pacing dragged a bit. Folks who enjoy basketball & sapphic romances would love this one, I think!
School for Extraterrestrial Girls #2: Girls In Flight by Jeremy Whitley & Illustrated by Jamie Noguchi The School for Extraterrestrial Girls series is such a fun read for sci-fi fans who like imaging different alien races. Girls in Flight is the second graphic novel and it transports us to the School for Extraterrestrial Boys with Tara, Misako, Summer, and Kat, since their school was compromised in book 1. I love that there are multiple POVs and that we get to know each of the main characters much more. The illustrations are also fantastic! If you love queer sci-fi and graphic novels, definitely give this series a go.
Zeal by Morgan Jerkins At its core, this is a multi-generation story about love. Ardelia & Oliver get engaged in 2019 but struggle to hold onto one another as the stress of wedding planning AND Oliver's work at the hospital becomes overwhelming as the pandemic explodes in the US... \ \ I finished reading this book in two days! Kennedy Ryan's Can't Get Enough, like most of her books, depicts complicated people learning, loving, and thriving together. This is a love story, but it also dives into discussions of being child-free by choice, grief, Alzheimer's disease, anti-fatness, and racism with care. These topics are usually difficult to navigate but Ryan seems to do so with ease! I felt seen, as someone who had to be there with my grandma when as she deteriorated due to dementia. I especially loved the author's notes at the beginning and end of the book that frames the story.\ \ Hendrix is a beautiful, plus-sized boss who can't help but capture Maverick's affection from the second he sees her. Their chemistry is immediately off-the-charts and the heat continues to crank up throughout this book. Maverick is refreshingly honest and warm. I'm usually not a fan of "billionaire romances," and didn't really care for that aspect of the book, but I understand how that status adds a bit of convenience and light-heartedness to the story.\ \ I highly recommend this book and the entire series!!\ \ Join for free or login](https://bookish-afrolatina.binderybooks.com/item/KqHSWFP2ae7F0Fagfjgn/)
