Nat Cassidy, author of the acclaimed horror Mary, returns with When the Wolf Comes Home, an unabashed, adrenaline-fueled pop horror thriller where the darkest fears can become reality.

“This is the kind of great, big, epic horror novel we got back in the '80s that came out swinging for the fences and left everything on the field. Welcome back, you shaggy, bloody monster of a book!”—Grady Hendrix.

"The Stephen King of TikTok"—The Lineup.

One night, Jess, a struggling actress, finds a five-year-old runaway hiding in the bushes outside her apartment. After a violent, bloody encounter with the boy's father, she and the boy find themselves running for their lives.

As they attempt to evade the boy's increasingly desperate father, Jess slowly comes to a horrifying understanding of the butchery that follows them—the boy can turn his every fear into reality.

And when the wolf finally comes home, no one will be spared.

Howdy lil freakies! \ \ Here's my roll-up of everything I read this month. Full spoilers and deep dive reviews can be found on my YouTube channel, but you guys get to see what I read behind the scenes!\ \ Below is a roll-up of books with unprofessional summaries and reasoning for the rating.\ \ An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks ⭐/5 \ \ A woman in her 20s crashes a local university's psychology study. The professor running the study is sketchy af, and the book follows the dynamic between these two. I feel like everyone's motives were weird/nonsensical. There was no real reason for any of it, and it ended on such an oddly hollow note.\ \ Never Lie by Freida McFadden ⭐⭐/5 \ \ Okay, genuinely, I'm becoming a certified fan (derogatory) of Freida. The writing sucks, the plots are nonsensical but it's genuinely so entertaining. I don't get tired of these weird weird books lol. This one was about a woman and her boyfriend who get trapped in a snowstorm. Trapped where, you ask? In a famous psychologsit's house... who went missing a few months ago. And from the jump, everyone is acting sketchy and lying to eachother.\ \ The Guest List by Lucy Foley ⭐⭐⭐/5 \ \ This one will be my first December upload on the channel! There's a wedding being held on a creepy island. The book follows the POV of various guests and talks about their relationships and how they got to this point in their lives. Everything seems like rich people messy problems, until someone comes across a dead body. The premise was awesome. Only critique was that it was a sloooooow build and in general the pacing was a little off. Other issues are spoilers, so watch the video if you want more.\ \ We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer ⭐⭐⭐/5 \ \ Eve and her girlfriend buy a house to flip. One day Eve is there alone and this off-putting family knocks on the door, says that they used to live there and would love to take a look around. AND SHE LETS THEM INSIDE. Someone on Goodreads said this book was r/NoSleep coded, and I couldn't say it better. It was interesting, and then we went off the rails in a way that felt like a Jordan Peele movie, but without the right set up.\ \ Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman ⭐⭐/5 \ \ Speaking of Jordan Peele... 8 year old girl tells us about her daddy, mommy and other mommy. My stomach dropped reading the description and there were a few other moments in the book that gave me that feeling, however, they were over shadowed by repetitiveness and just odd narrative choice. It's from an 8 year old, but she talked/thought like she was much younger and then her parents talked to her like she was an adult. And also the tension of WHAT other mommy is and what she looks like is immediately ruined and she wasn't scary anymore, just a weird creepy vibes rommate instead of a monster under the bed. Ya know? I don't think monsters should be described directly or in detail, that almost always kills the vibe.\ \ When the Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 \ \ Little boy's dad turns into a wolf monster when he gets mad. One day he runs from home and runs into a woman. She takes him in and tries to protect him. It's an absolute batshit ride from there. SUCH a unique premise, fast paced, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I really enjoyed this one. The ending was a little meh, but great otherwise.\ \ Bury Our Bones in Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab ⭐⭐/5 \ \ Getting away from thriller and horror genre binge, I read this fantasy/historical fiction/toxic saphhic vampire book. That premise? Wild. Love. Sign me up. The execution? ahhhhhhh. The ending pissed me off enough to go down an entire star. But, it was a multiple timeline story that eventually interconnects and boy howdy do I eat that up lmao. The timeline, premise and general vibes really carried this book. The characters felt shallow, the pacing wasn't the best and that ending made get up and go for a walk because I was so mad and made me feel like I wasted my time.\ \ Other News \ \ I'll be doing a 2025 Q&A video in a few weeks. If there's anything you've ever wanted to know, ask me here!\ \ For full spoilers and long-form deep dives of other books I read this month, check out my YouTube channel!\ \ In November, I reviewed:\ \ Animal Farm by George Orwell ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5\ \ Hooked by Emily McIntire ⭐⭐/5\ \ Housemaid series by Freida McFadden ⭐/5\ \ Butcher and Blackbird by Brynne Weaver ⭐⭐⭐/5\ \ None of This is True by Lisa Jewell ⭐⭐/5

Have y’all seen or read any of these books?!

Bourbon and lies book is on my TBR (I need an audiobook!) and after getting to 41% on I, Medusa — I am intrigued in Ayana’s other works (but my library hold lapse and now it will be a 5 week wait for me to finish 😂)

\ \ Welcome back to another Author Interview!\ \ Today I'm talking with author Ellis Hart. Hart released his debut novel this year, The House That Held Her. It's a blend of Mystery/Thriller with a dab of horror in there. I absolutely loved this one. The puzzles the main character, Margot, had to solve were so much fun. Hart also released an anthology featuring new voices in horror. Both have been linked below.\ \ \ \ 1. This question is always my freebie—use this first question as an introduction. Tell us a little bit about yourself and your books.\ \

Hi there! I’m Ellis and I released my first novel on May 11, 2025 called The House That Held Her. I always loved crafting stories as a kid and to finally have a full, comprehensive work out in the world has brought me so much pride and joy!\ \ 2. I absolutely loved The House That Held Her. You had me hooked from the first chapter. What was your inspiration behind the story?\ \ I am a 90’s kid, through and through, so I grew up on some iconic stories. One of my favorites was The Goonies because it had so many awesome elements- it was silly, it was scary, it was legitimately cool, it was mysterious. And so I wanted to write a story that merged the Goonies with some darker, spookier elements. And thus the treasure hunt within Hawthorne Manor was born!\ \ 3. I know the small town of Mount Dora plays a huge part in the book. And I know it was based on the actual town of Mount Dora in Florida. Care to tell us a little about the town and how it became such an inspiration to you?\ \ This is a funny story because I wrote the entire book without ever setting foot in Mount Dora. My family had just moved to FL and I literally googled places that met all my requirements: spooky vibes, on the water, historic, old buildings, etc. and found Mount Dora! I used Google street view to walk the streets and learn about the places there that I included in the book. Right before publishing my wife convinced me to go see the town before the book came out and boy am I glad that she did. I had interpreted so much incorrectly about the town. Once I visited, met the people, walked the streets, it all clicked into place and I rushed back home and did so many rewrites (including changing the ending!)\ \ 4. What was your favorite part to write for The House That Held Her? The hardest?\ \ Oh gosh. The hardest was definitely the puzzles. I love escape rooms and knew I wanted that vibe for Margot in the book. But making the puzzles clever but logical and helpful to the plot was challenging. Favorite was honestly the tunnel scene with Shannon at the end. No spoilers, but it originally didn’t exist, and I added it late after visiting Mt. Dora. The anxiety and fear I felt just writing it made me feel like I was really onto something special.\ \ 5. I know you also published an anthology (As Told Under The Moon) featuring some new voices in horror. Care to tell us a little bit about that anthology?\ \ I love, love, love short stories and I write a ton of them. There are a lot of ideas that make great stories but not all stories make great novels. And so I decided to put out a short stories collection for Halloween. I planned to just have it be me but then I started reading some other indie authors and it just clicked to have some of those authors join me and do something that was exclusive to indies since no one has given us much of a break yet. I’m really proud with how it turned out.\ \ 6. You’ve been on the hunt for some emerging voices in horror. Can you name a few authors you’ve discovered that have stuck with you?\ \ Oh totally! I legitimately loved all the submissions for the anthology but authors I’ve actually bought books of and immediately read are Amy Tackett, Julia Jackson, Shawn Brooks, and A.D. Jones, just to name a few!\ \ 7. 2025 has been a big year for horror. What have been some of your favorite reads this year?\ \ Gah, so hard. Okay, to be fair, these aren’t necessarily all 2025, but they were books I read this year that were unbelievably good! Brother by Ania Ahlborn, The Darkest Deep by Chris Butera, When the Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy, and The Man Made of Smoke by Alex North.\ \ 8. Any horror books you’re looking forward to in 2026?\ \ I probably need to do a better job of knowing what’s coming out but that’s what I rely on you for!\ \ Definitely interested to read Marcus Kliewer for the simple fact that it already has a movie deal which is just so wild to me considering I can’t even get an agent to respond to a query!\ \ **Haha! Thanks Ellis! Here's a preview of just some of the books I'm looking forward to. Trust me, there's so many more I've added.**2026 Books\ \ 9. Are you working on any new projects? If so, anything you can tell us about it?\ \ Yes!! The first draft of my second novel is done! It’s with my beta readers and developmental editor right now. I am so, so, so excited about it. It’s called Make Me Forget Again and it’s a pure psychological thriller. No ghost or spooky doors closing this time, just raw human emotion. The tag line right now is “Is There Ever Peace after Vengeance”?\ \ 10. Anything else big coming for you in 2026?\ \ Yes! I’m doing a few awesome events including The Spooky Retreat in Arizona in February. I’ll be doing more signing events and tons of giveaways and engagement opportunities as well! My biggest hope is to land an agent in 2026!\ \ Use the below space to add in anything else you would like to say!\ \ Just a huge thank you to you as well as the rest of the bookstagram community. I joined in April 2025 and have already made so many wonderful book lovers. It’s legitimately the only fun, productive, and functional part of the internet left in my opinion. So thank you!!!\ \ Thank you so much again, Ellis, for agreeing to this! It was a delight talking to you!\ \ Join for free or login](https://ashreadshorror.binderybooks.com/item/90tc3TeJgQdCtgkgiJtF/)

\ \ Welcome back to another author interview! Today, I'm featuring an amazing horror writer that may be flying under your radar! Viggy Parr Hampton is the author of three published novels--with number four releasing in January.\ \ \ \ Hampton's books are A Cold Night For Alligators (Outbreak, Urban exploration, Abandoned amusement park), Much Too Vulgar (Dark Academia, Unhinged female, Dark humor), The Rotting Room (Nuns, Possession, Historical), and her book releasing in January, A Veritable Household Pet (Sisterhood, Lobotomies, Loss of autonomy).\ \ Let's dive into the interview!\ \

1. Use this first question as an introduction. Tell us a little about you and your books.\ \ I’m Viggy Parr Hampton, and I’m an epidemiologist, host of the podcast “Horror Humor Hunger,” and the author of four horror novels: A Cold Night for Alligators, Much Too Vulgar, The Rotting Room, and A Veritable Household Pet. I’m drawn to stories where the characters—especially the villains—have a lot of depth and moral ambiguity, and I definitely don’t shy away from some medical and body horror!\ \ 2. You're the author of four books now (with A Veritable Household Pet coming out in January). What has been your favorite part of your writing journey? The hardest part?\ \ My favorite part—which is also the hardest part—has been finding my voice as an author. When I was first starting out, I spent a lot of time writing short stories and practicing. It took me a few years to find my unique voice, instead of trying to write in anybody else’s style. As I continue to practice and hone my skills, I’m finding it easier and easier to tell the stories I want to tell in a way that feels most authentic to me.\ \ 3. I absolutely love how different each of your books are. What have been some of the biggest inspirations for your novels?\ \ So many of my books have been inspired by real history or my own personal experience. For example, A Cold Night for Alligators was borne out of my experience as a student research epidemiologist at the CDC; Much Too Vulgar came from my time as an undergraduate at Georgetown University; The Rotting Room was inspired by an actual room called a ‘putridarium’ from the 17th century; A Veritable Household Pet is all about the very real—and very horrifying—practice of transorbital lobotomy. I love when I can weave in as much truth as possible into a book—it makes it that much more real, and that much more terrifying!\ \ 4.While I'm not asking you to pick favorites, has there been one novel that you've written that resonated with you more?\ \ Until recently, I would have said Much Too Vulgar, simply because my main character, Keely, is a mouthpiece for all of the nasty thoughts I’ve ever had (but never acted upon!). Now, I would have to say A Veritable Household Pet, because the process of researching and writing that narrative was so surreal, so urgent, and so heavy. The subject matter is dark, but the characters are so multi-faceted that I couldn’t stop—and still can’t stop—thinking about them.\ \ 5.Do you have any writing routines or rituals that help you get in the zone?\ \ I love to listen to ASMR videos while I’m writing! Something about those ambient background noises really helps me focus.\ \ 6. 2025 has been a big year for horror. What have been some of your favorites this year?\ \ This is such a hard question! If I had to name a few, I’d say When the Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy, The Lamb by Lucy Rose, The Artist of Blackberry Grange by Paulette Kennedy, and This House Will Feed by Maria Tureaud (I read this as an ARC, so it doesn’t actually come out until 2026!).\ \ 7. Any novels you're eager to read in 2026?\ \ So many! The Fourth Wife by Linda Hamilton, Headlights by CJ Leede, Play Nice by Rachel Harrison, Immaculate Conception by Ling Ling Huang, and Slashed Beauties by A. Rushby.\ \ 8. If any of your books got adapted into a film, which one would you love to see on the screen? Do you have a dream cast?\ \ I would love to see Much Too Vulgar adapted for the screen! I think Mia Goth would make an excellent Keely, Brooke Shields would be a great Ellen Rexroth (Keely’s mother), Hailee Steinfeld could be Erica, Steve Buscemi would be Father O’Meara, and Lili Reinhart would be a great Airhead Ani!\ \ 9. Are you working on any other projects at the moment?\ \ Yes! My fifth novel, Ripped Up the Middle in Two, will be published in the fall of 2026. It’s a sort of motherhood creature feature about a postpartum mom who starts to wonder if there’s an evil fairy living in the woods that wants her baby, or if it’s all in her head.\ \ 10. Out of your four novels, which character did you connect the most with?\ \ Definitely Keely from Much Too Vulgar. But I promise I’m not nearly as mean as her!\ \ Anything you'd like to add? Drop it down here. I can't thank you enough for agreeing to this!\ \ I also have a podcast called“Horror Humor Hunger,” which is about all things horror. Each season revolves around a short story or novel of mine, and the finale is a recipe inspired by that story! I've interviewed everybody from bestselling authors and psychics to exorcists, filmmakers, jelly artists, and tabletop game developers.\ \ I’m also part of the Purgatory Media team, and I have a segment on our YouTube channel called “Tag Team Tales of Terror,” where I challenge fellow authors to create a story with me in 30-second increments based on a prompt I pull out of a hat. Here’s a recent one with Rachel Harrison! https://youtu.be/wvwJ2JhowCI\\ \ Join for free or login](https://ashreadshorror.binderybooks.com/item/NvdaFzYBh13Amuy2Gqhe/)
