Burn Down Master's House: A Novel

Clay Cane

No purchase links available

Inspired by true, long-buried stories of enslaved people who dared to fight back, a searing portrayal of resistance for readers of Colson Whitehead, Jesmyn Ward, and Percival Everett, from Clay Cane, award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author of _The Grift_.

As turmoil simmers within a divided nation, smoke from another blaze begins to rise. Sparked by individual acts of resistance among those enslaved across the American South, their seemingly disparate rebellions fuel a singular inferno of justice, connecting them in ways quiet at times, explosive at others. As these flames rise, so will they.

**Luke**, quick-witted and literate, and **Henri**, a man with a strong and defiant spirit, forge an unbreakable bond at a Virginia plantation called Magnolia Row. Both seek escape from unimaginable cruelty. And sure as the fires of hell, Luke and Henri will leave their mark, sparking resistance among the lives they touch…

One is **Josephine**, a young, sharp, and observant girl who wields silence as her greatest weapon. A witness to Luke and Henri’s resilience, she listens, watches, waits for the moment to make her move. Then there is **Charity Butler**, her husband a formerly enslaved man who proved his ferocity as a young boy standing alongside Josephine. At his encouragement, Charity fights for her freedom in court and wins—only to battle a deeply unjust system designed to destroy the life they’ve built.

And finally, there is **Nathaniel**, who ruthlessly exploits other Black people and mirrors the cruelty of the white men who, like him, are enslavers. A perversion of the system of slavery, his fragile and contradictory rule will become a catalyst of its own.

Inspired by the true stories of the profoundly courageous men and women who dared to fight back, _Burn Down Master’s House_ is a singular tour de force of a novel—breathtaking in scope, compassion, and a timeliness that speaks powerfully to our present era.

Welcome back to another Author Interview! Today I am joined by Haley Newlin, author of T _ake Your Turn Teddy, Not Another Sarah Halls ,_ and _The Film You Are About To See._\\
\\
\\
\\
**1\. I always use this first question as an introduction. Tell us as much or as little about yourself as you would like!**\\
\\
> I grew up on the theatrical terror of William Castle's gimmicks and Vincent Price films — both of which have heavily influenced my work. I have published three novels, including _Take Your Turn, Teddy_, and my latest release, _The Film You Are About To See_ which was featured on the 2025 Bram Stoker Reading List. I have written several short stories, including "The Butcher on Blue Jay Way," featured in Kandisha Press's _SLASH-HER: An Anthology of Women in Horror_, and a story in Nick Roberts’s forthcoming _Haunted Minds: Tales of Possession_ anthology. \\
> \\
> I am the managing editor for Cemetery Dance Magazine. When I’m not writing, I’m watching black-and-white horror films or reading horror books. I live in Indiana with my boyfriend and three dogs.\\
\\
**2\. I just saw the amazing news that you are the new Managing Editor for Cemetery Dance Magazine. That is so exciting. Care to tell us a little about what all that will entail?**\\
\\
> Thank you! I’m really excited about this new role. I’ve written for Cemetery Dance Magazine for about five years, mostly book reviews and author interviews. The managing editor curates this content, edits it, and publishes it. \\
> \\
> I’m excited to work on the next print magazine release.\\
\\
**3\. You currently have three books out. Do you have a favorite that you have written? Was there one that was harder to write than the others? One you have more of a personal connection to?**\\
\\
> _The Film You Are About To See_ is definitely my favorite. When I treat myself to some me time, I’m always watching an old horror flick like _The Tingler_(1959), _House On Haunted Hill_(1959), or _Cat People_(1942). \\
> \\
> I’ve always really loved Vincent Price and William Castle and have dreamed of seeing one of their films at the drive-in, my favorite place to watch horror movies. Then, I got to thinking about if I could host my own dusk til dawn night at the drive-in, what kind of movies would I show? How could I bring William Castle’s theatrical gimmicks to the drive-in setting? And the result -- _The Film You Are About To See_. \\
> \\
> I still can’t believe I got to write a book like _The Film You Are About To See_. It was just a blast. And the best part has been readers going and watching some of the films included on the marquee. I love nothing more than a tag on Instagram and someone shares that they read _The Film You Are About To See_ and are watching _Shock_ (1946), Vincent Price’s first starring role, or _The Tingler_, for the very first time. \\
> \\
> _Take Your Turn, Teddy_ was the most difficult book to write, and maybe that’s because it is the most personal. \\
> \\
> For a while, I said that _Take Your Turn, Teddy_ broke my brain. This story came together about a young boy who lives in an abusive home situation, and when he and his mother flee to a house in Indiana, he befriends a dark entity. \\
> \\
> In my childhood and teen years, most days just felt like survival. I didn’t feel that there was a lot of consistency in my life aside from abandonment, disappointment, and isolation. This is the type of narrative the shadow feeds to Teddy. He comes to believe the bad is his only constant. \\
> \\
> So, basically, I’d written some personal elements into what this road looks like for Teddy. Which, eventually, was cathartic. At first, it was grueling. Like pulling teeth. I’d leave the writing desk just feeling gutted and utterly exposed. But for some reason, I pushed through and kept writing. \\
> \\
> I’m glad I did.\\
\\
**4\. Are you working on any new projects at the moment?**\\
\\
> Too many! I am a firm believer in working on one project at a time. I want all of my creativity and ideas to channel into one project. But, my current project calendar has me working on a screenplay and two short stories, simultaneously, so it’s been an adjustment for sure. \\
> \\
> I begin drafting my next novel in June. I won’t say too much but it sort of feels like a sister novel to _Take Your Turn, Teddy_. It’s bleak and set in rural Indiana during the 1940s.\\
\\
**5\. I know you are a HUGE Vincent Price fan. What are your top three Vincent Price movies?**\\
\\
> I never get tired of answering questions like this! \\
> \\
> I really prefer Vincent Price’s films prior to the 1960s, but there is one exception and it’s first on my list. \\
> \\
> 1. _Diary of a Madman_ (1963) \\
> \\
> 2. _The Tingler_ (1959) \\
> \\
> 3. _House of Wax_(1953)\\
\\
**6\. Do you have any writing rituals or routines that help you get in the writing zone?**\\
\\
> I like to start each writing session by listing out a few things I’m most excited about within the project. Maybe it’s the setting, like 1959 at a dusk til dawn Spooktacular, hosted by the local drive-in (as in _The Film You Are About To See_), or a new piece of research I stumbled upon. Sometimes just being reminded of the passion and taking a moment to reconnect to it, makes a blank page less intimidating.\\
\\
**7\. What have been your top 2026 horror book releases?**\\
\\
> I can’t stop recommending _The Curse of Hester Gardens_ by Tamika Thompson and _I’ll Watch Your Baby_ by Neena Viel. \\
> \\
> _The Curse of Hester Gardens_ should be studied on college campuses. It’s a story about poverty, gun violence, familial bonds, curses and ghosts. It’s an unshakable and incredibly emotional read. \\
> \\
> _I’ll Watch Your Baby_ by Neena Viel (May 26, 2026) is inspired by Linda Taylor, known as the original Welfare Queen, who Ronald Reagan caricatured as the ultimate cheat of the system and by extension, the American people. I recommend going into this somewhat blind. The supernatural element and secondary POV come together so powerfully. \\
> \\
> It’s about generational and historical trauma, oppression, and the power of friendship. \\
> \\
> It’s quite visceral, terrifying, and unforgettable.\\
\\
**8\. Some of your favorite backlist titles?**\\
\\
> My favorite read of 2025 was Tananarive Due’s _The Reformatory_. I think everyone should read this book. It’s just brilliant. I’m actually currently reading a book recommended to fans of _The Reformatory_, called _Burn Down Master’s House_ by Clay Cane. It will absolutely make it on my list of top reads of the year. I can’t put it down. \\
> \\
> I also really enjoyed _The Possession of Alba Diaz_ by Isabel Canas. It has one of the most memorable endings I’ve ever read. I wanted to leap from my seat and yell “GOOD FOR HER!” \\
> \\
> A favorite nonfiction read that I can’t recommend enough is _Scream With Me_: _Horror Films and the Rise of American Feminism_ by Eleanor Johnson. It totally changed how I see adaptations of horror books like _The Shining_ and _The Exorcist._\\
\\
**9\. Being an indie author yourself, who are some of your favorite indie horror authors/books?**\\
\\
> I love the _Paisley Mott_ series by Kalvin Ellis, _Squirming All The Way Up_ by Joey Powell, _The Long Low Whistle_ by Laurel Hightower (my scariest read of 2025), and you can’t go wrong with anything from Viggy Parr Hampton, Spencer Hamilton, Briana Morgan, or RJ Joseph.\\
\\
**10\. What horror movies have you been watching lately/are on your radar?**\\
\\
> After reading _Your Favorite Scary Movie:_ by Ashley Cullins, I am looking forward to seeing _Scream 7_ once it hits streaming. I had no idea that the original screenwriter, Kevin Williamson, directed it. He’s been through so much with this franchise and the woes of Hollywood, that I was really excited to hear that he’s back. He always wanted _Scream_ to have a queer director, he said he just never would’ve thought that it would be himself. \\
> \\
> I’m rewatching the whole franchise. I’m currently on the second film, which I’m realizing is a lot better than people give it credit for.\\

I don't know about y'all, but I've been screenshotting new releases every time I see them on Instagram! Between those and the books I've seen popping up on Netgalley, I was able to figure out which new books I'm excited to check out this year. Here's what I've got my eyes on:\\
\\
**_The Starseekers_ by Nicole Glover** \\
\\
According to the publisher, this is "a stand-alone historical fantasy set in the world of _The Conductors_, in which the space race of the mid-20th century will be determined by magic...if not murder." This makes sense since the magic system is directly tied to the constellations. The cover and description also connect the story to _Hidden Figures_byMargot Lee Shetterly, which was a fascinating book to me. I'm currently finishing up _The Undertakers (Murder and Magic #2)_!\\
\\
 **_Muñeca_ by Cynthia Gómez** \\
\\
The cover of this novel caught my eye right away! The description says this is "a vivid, surreal Gothic about a queer, Latine, working class witch who sets out to rescue a bespelled heiress and loses control of her powers and her heart in the process." I've been loving Latine Gothic novels, thanks to authors like Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Isabel Cañas. Hopefully, this one will be another gripping read.\\
\\
**_Goldenborn_ by Ama Ofosua Lieb** \\
\\
The cover of this book says, "Love, lies, and legacy–all tangled in a trickster's web," which makes me excited because it makes me think of Anansi, the West African trickster of lore. So I was pleased when I read the description, "When 17-year-old Akoma Addo stumbles into a world of ancient gods and modern magic, she’ll have to choose between saving her father… or staying true to everything she’s ever believed." I love that! Also, this novel takes place in San Francisco’s AfricaTown, which I've haven't read about before.\\
\\
 **_Score_ by Kennedy Ryan** \\
\\
Let's be real, Kennedy Ryan is an autobuy author for me. I love the Skyland Series and Reel was amazing. I'm pumped to read another book in the world of Reel! After I read the blurb below, I was completely sold. We've got a second-chance romance between a world-class musician and an award-winning screenwriter as they are forced to reconnect over an epic Harlem Renaissance biopic. _swoon_\\
\\
**_Bound by Fury_ by Noelle Monét** \\
\\
This cover is gorgeous and one thing I'm loving in BIPOC fiction lately is the emphasis on ancestral magic and southern folklore! Read this description: " _Legendborn_ meets _The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina_ in this captivating contemporary fantasy debut about a teen whose newly awakened magical abilities send her searching for answers at an elite boarding school that has a mysterious connection to her family’s history." HELLO!?! That sounds amazing.\\
\\
**_Before We Burn (Born from the Ashes, \#1)_ by Ophelia Reign** \\
\\
I saw some exciting promos on the author's IG and decided to add this mysterious book to my list. Before We Burn follows ex-assassin Marzana, who teaches young vamps how to control their hunger, power, and rage, until her academy is raided by humans and her pupils are taken. Intriguing!\\
\\
**_To Ride a Rising Storm_ by Moniquill Blackgoose** \\
\\
This pick was inevitable! I read To Shape a Dragon's Breath twice and loved it, so I've been waiting for news of book 2 for a while. Anequs has passed her first year at Kuiper’s Academy with flying colors and is ready for a break back on Masquapaug with her dragon Kasaqua and close friend Theod. Unfortunately, her notoriety brings an Anglish presence pressing to control her people. As if Anequs would let them have the chance! If you have a hard time with language in Fantasy books or even just want to make sure you have the pronunciation correct, I highly recommend the audiobooks for this series.\\
\\
**_Heir of Prophecy_ by Analeigh Sbrana** \\
\\
I loved Sbrana's Lore of the Wilds duology so it's no surprise that I wanted this book as soon as I saw it on her IG. The cover is amazing and the description has me floored. Audra, the female MC, is kidnapped by Fae to be trained as a soldier by the Priestesses at their cult-like school. They are looking for the Heir of Prophecy but Audra isn't going to just accept her fate as their prisoner while they search.\\
\\
**_The Summer Girlfriend_ by Kristina Forest** \\
\\
A fake summer fling?! Fake dating romances give me life and I don't care who knows it. I loved the Greene sister series, so I think this will be right up my alley.\\
\\
**_Blood Rising (Volume 2 of The Blood Saga)_ by Markus Redmond** \\
\\
Blood Slaves was one of the best books I read in 2025 and the ending was the perfect set-up for book 2. I can't wait to read it!\\
\\
 **_Honey_ by Imani Thompson** \\
\\
I feel like this book is gonna be a bit cathartic for many WOC in academia. Our MC is bored with her PhD program, work, and the crappy men in her life. Then, she accidentally kills one of them, a problematic professor, and feels a little more alive. She's been researching, writing, and teaching about feminism and racial solidarity for a while, but now it feels extremely useful. Of course, her stint of righteous murders can't continue forever...\\
\\
**_The Jellyfish Problem_ by Tessa Yang**\\
\\
"A marine biologist makes the discovery of a lifetime when called to rescue the inhabitants of a small Maine island being menaced by a giant, glowing jellyfish in this richly imagined, wholly original debut." That sounds hella whimsical and like it might be weirdly scary which is intriguing!\\
\\
**_Until The Clock Strikes Midnight_ by Alechia Dow** \\
\\
Listennnnnnn, I enjoy Alechia Dows books but the promos for _this_ one have me locked in. " _The Good Place_ meets the Brandy version of _Cinderella_ in _Until the Clock Strikes Midnight_, a cozy, romantic fantasy from award-winning author Alechia Dow." Yes, please! \\
\\
**_Aicha_ by Soraya Bouazzaoui** \\
\\
I was scrolling on IG minding everyone's business when I saw this queenly book cover and internally gasped. They say not to judge a book by it's cover so here's the description: "Aicha is the story of Morocco's warrior goddess, her strange magic, fierce rebellion, and devastating romance."\\
\\
**_The Lust Crusade_ by Jo Segura** \\
\\
I've loved Jo Segura's first two books, _Raiders of the Lost Heart_ and _Temple of Swoon_, so I know _The Lust Crusade_ will give me that wonderful mix of archaeology, romance, and intrigue. On top of that, the female MC is a librarian (like me)!\\
\\
**_Burn Down Master's House_ by Clay Cane** \\
\\
Since the plantation fire last year, I've felt inspired more and more by stories of resistance on those plots of Hell on Earth. I think this novel will be perfect for that. "Sparked by individual acts of resistance among those enslaved across the American South, their seemingly disparate rebellions fuel a singular inferno of justice, connecting them in ways quiet at times, explosive at others." I love that it follows multiple people seeking justice!\\
\\
**_Fire Sword and Sea_ by Vanessa Riley** \\
\\
This novel is a new take on the "life of the legendary seventeenth-century pirate Jacquotte Delehaye." You might remember that I read _The Ballad of Jacquotte Delahaye_ by Briony Cameron last year, which was very entertaining, so I'm looking forward to reading another about this fascinating figure.\\
\\
**The Art of Loving You (The Forever Falling Series) by Natasha Bishop** \\
\\
A beautiful cover _and_ some of my fave Romance tropes: friends to lovers, he falls first, second-chance romance, Black joy, forced proximity, right person, wrong time. I'm in!\\
\\
**_Witch Queen Rising_ by Savannah Stephens** \\
\\
Look at that baddie on the cover! This novel is about an outcast witch in New Orleans named Seraphine Barreau who can "feed on magic and make it her own." After her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, Barreau becomes the ruler of the same people who misunderstood her. I love stories like this!\\
\\
**_Devil of the Deep_ by Falencia Jean-Francois**\\
\\
"Lu watched the love of his life walk the plank and sink into the inky-black depths of the sea. Nnenna was dead . . . or so he thought." Ooop! We've got another Black pirate adventure on our hands and I'm so down. In _Devil of the Deep,_ a pirate, a fleet officer, and a mermaid who "must choose their loyalties, find their courage, and race to protect the island from false gods and forces of evil--or risk unleashing an ancient curse that could destroy them all."\\
\\
**_The Missed Connection_ by Tia Williams** \\
\\
This Romance is about a boss casting agent named Sasha, who, despite her typical thorniness around men, believes she might have found her soulmate on a flight to Paris. They miss their chance to exchange contact info but Sasha isn't going to give up that easily. As she enlists her work friend to help her search, Sasha realizes that she accidentally sent the email to the entire company and now they are also on the lookout. This sounds hilarious and wholesome!\\
\\
**_Charmed and Dangerous_ by Shelly Page**\\
\\
"A teen mystic will do anything to solve a series of love-related magical mishaps plaguing her high school, including fake dating her boss's daughter, in this charming sapphic romance." Sounds adorable!!!\\
\\
**_The Case of Elmwood Ranch_ by Deanna Grey** \\
\\
Romance and a haunted house? I'll take that!"A legacy paranormal investigator, loner horse rancher, and a haunted house."\\
\\
**_The Bridge Back To You_ by Riss M. Neilson**\\
\\
"Exes discover they’ve both inherited the restaurant they love..." Tis' the year for second-chance romance, it seems! I'm looking forward to this one because I love a good foodie Romance, especially with a deep emotional connection.\\
\\
**_Death Card_ by Jasmine Smith** \\
\\
The cover drew me in but this description made me wanna pre-order it: "A dark contemporary fantasy featuring witchcraft, tarot, death, and a bit of romance that's perfect for fans of _Immortal Dark_ and _Cinderella Is Dead_."\\
\\
**The Starter Ex by Mia Sosa** \\
\\
Mia Sosa is an autobuy author for me because she always knows how to mix the perfect amount of hilariousness with tender and sexy romance. I know The Starter Ex won't let me down because the description has me hooked already. Vanessa Cordero had a side gig where she'd date your crush and annoy/scare the hell out them so they'd see how much of a catch you really are. Now, Vanessa's sister is asking her to do the same to Jason Torres, a "certified commitment-phobe" she has her eye on. The problem is, Jason actually wants a temporary ridiculous girlfriend so his mom will stop trying to get him to the altar. Uh oh!\\
\\
**_The Other Moctezuma Girls_ by Sofia Robleda**\\
\\
"In sixteenth-century Mexico, a fearless young woman strives to uncover the secrets her mother kept as the last Aztec empress in a sweeping historical epic by the author of _Daughter of Fire_." Sounds like a fascinating novel!\\
\\
**_The Rhythm of Raine at Dawn (Perfect Muse, \# 1)_by Aricka Alexander** \\
\\
This looks like a cute sapphic romance. Raine Williams, a choreographer, posts a video to R&B artist Dawn Anderson's newest hit and it goes viral. So viral that the musician herself reaches out. Then, she realizes that Dawn isn't only interested in her choreo...\\
\\
 **_Cleopatra_ by Saara El-Arifi**\\
\\
"Cleopatra tells her own story in this evocative and sensuous historical epic from the bestselling and award-winning author of _Faebound_ and _The Final Strife_." As someone who used to be obsessed with Ancient Egypt, I think this will be a really cool take on the story of Cleopatra VII.\\
\\
**_The Re-Do List_ by Denise Williams** \\
\\
I feel like this book will be a great palette-cleanser after reading Fantasy or Horror."Willow experienced all her big firsts with her high school sweetheart. Now, reeling from their very public breakup, she wants to get a re-do on those important moments. While dog-sitting for her brother during his deployment, she has a chance to start over and spending time with his best friend gives her the confidence to start checking items off her “Re-Do list.”\\
\\
**As you can see, I'm really hype about Fantasy, Historical, Romance, and Horror this year. I only realized after compiling this post that I don't have many men on the list and that was totally unintentional! **If you know of any books by men of color and/or queer men you think I'd enjoy based on this list, please share!**** **Did any of these books catch your eye?
