\\
Oh hey book buddies, \\
\\
Did you think I forgot about you? NEVER!!! \\
\\
I used my morning to record some Youtube content before temps got too high. I don't know about where you are, but it's HOT here in Los Angeles. \\
\\
This week is a little quieter than last in terms of new content, but I have been reading quite a bit. Why so little new content, you ask? Well, I prioritized time with friends this week, seeing a wonderful Suki Waterhouse concert on Thursday and brunching with girlfriends on Saturday. I've also been suffering from migraines a bit more this week, likely due to the high temps. But I'm determined to get back in the content saddle in anticipation of August 1's newsletter. If you've not signed up for my monthly newsletter, now's the time to do so. \\
\\
Ok, let's talk books! Since we last chatted I finished **_The Parisian Heist_** and **_Should the Waters Take Us_**, both on audio. **_The Parisian Heist_** was a fun summer suspense novel full of art and art history. It's perfect for the type of folks who gravitate to historic museums while traveling. I really enjoyed getting to know Jo Van Gogh, the sister-in-law of Vincent who helped ensure his art and legacy. 4⭐️\\
\\
**_Should the Waters Take Us_** was not at all what I expected, but I did very much enjoy it. Far more literary than historical, it's a story that focuses on the human element of migration and legacy. It blends love of land & nature with land rights and disaster (both natural and manmade) to tell the story of South Louisiana. 4⭐️\\
\\
As part of a larger project (more on that soon), I finally read **_Where the Rivers Merge_** by Mary Alice Monroe. I've not read any of her work before (mostly Southern women's fiction with contemporary settings), but I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. All about family legacy and one woman's relationship with her family's land, it's the type of Southern fiction that I love to sink my teeth into. I can't wait for the sequel now! 4.5⭐️\\
\\
I'm still chipping away at **_The Intrigue_** and **_A Time of Witches_**; both are so good that I'm feeling torn each time I pick up my Kindle. Hopefully I'll find the time to finish both this week. \\
\\
I'm also still savoring **_A Founding Mother_**, the July BBFL book club book. It's SO SO SO good that I had to pull out the pen and highlighter to annotate, something I never do. I'm about halfway through and eager to put this laptop down to read more of this great Revolutionary War story. \\
\\
**ICYMI:**\\

Happy Sunday book buddies!\\
\\
There was a lot of reading _and creating_ going on this week, so let's cut straight to the chase. But before the books I must say _The Odyssey_ is a MUST watch film. It was SO, SO good. \\
\\
Alright, let's get to the books. I literally just finished **_The Parisian Heist_** on audio and have to say it was a fun summer suspense, especially if you're an art history lover. The dueling timelines married perfectly, complimenting each other in terms of tone and content. It's a bit more open door than I like, but it wasn't smutty. 4⭐️s\\
\\
I finally finished **_The Secret Society of Librarians_** earlier this week and boy was it good! I didn't care for one aspect of the ending so I can't quite give it a 5⭐️ rating, but it was an absolutely terrific WWII story. Full of heart and wonderful characters, this is a must read if you've loved Thompson's previous work or love WWII stories. 4.75⭐️\\
\\
As part of an ongoing research project (more on that soon) I devoured **_The Giver of Stars_** on audio. And, spoiler alert, it was just as good as everyone said it would be. Highly recommend it if you love strong female characters and a fierce group of friends. 4.5⭐️\\
\\
If you follow me on any of my platforms then you've probably seen the video I shared yesterday claiming **_Cane River_** a must read historical fiction. It stole my heart, and it's been so hard to keep it under wraps since finishing last week. I cannot say enough good things about this multi-generational family legacy story. If I read over 500 pages in physical format in less than a week, you know it's good. An absolute banger that everyone should read. 5⭐️\\
\\
I'm about six chapters into my physical copy of **_A Founding Mother_** and really am enjoying it. It's my first Dray/Kamoie, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm really enjoying the period appropriate, yet very approachable language. I know the BBFL book club members are really enjoying this one, and I have a feeling I will, too. \\
\\
I've started my advanced reader copy of **_The Intrigue_**, and, no surprise to anyone, I'm already sucked into this tale. It's very cinematic, which is exactly what I was hoping for from SMG. I will read anything she writes.\\
\\
My plan is to try to tackle both **_The Intrigue_** and **_A Time of Witches_** on my Kindle this week, and to listen to **_The Quarter Queen_** and **_Should the Waters Take Us_** on audio. I'm missing home terribly, so spending some time in Louisiana via a few audiobooks will help. \\
\\

\\
Do you want more with social media tips? \\
\\
\\
\\
Hi book buddies, \\
\\
Here's a few things that have been on my mind lately. Let me know what you think. :)\\
\\
**Black Stories**\\
\\
Earlier this week I attended the Kathryn Stockett book event in Santa Monica, and my wheels are turning.\\
\\
I’ll be honest: I didn't have high hopes about her book event. I certainly didn't expect to leave feeling reinvigorated. But that's exactly what happened. It's fair to say, Mrs. Stockett's event far exceeded my expectations.\\
\\
What makes me say that? 1) Hearing her talk about why she writes the way that she writes, i.e., her characters, her very in-depth character studies, her layered and lengthy books, and what's at the heart of those stories. 2) Hearing what motivates her: the people in her life and the history she wants to preserve, even though it's complicated.\\
\\
For a Mississippi woman, she's far more liberal than I expected her to be, even after reading both her books. She is openly supportive of women’s reproductive rights, and she was very adamant that everyone knew where she stands with regard to issues on race and human rights. She was very open about her feelings and her experience after writing _The Help_ and the criticism that she received, and I respected that very much. I'm sure living in New York (she splits her time between Mississippi and Manhattan) opened her heart and mind the same way that Los Angeles opened mine. That shared connection was very impactful for me. \\
\\
I was talking to a friend about _The Help_ recently and shared that the world of social media feels very much like a landmine when it comes to certain books. And _The Help_ is one of the books many people feel VERY strongly about (both for and against). Regardless of how you feel about a white woman writing Black characters (it's not my favorite thing, I'll be honest), it's important to recognize that the book was really impactful. It spent 103 weeks on the best seller list and motivated many women to pick up a book for the first time probably in a very long time. \\
\\
As a result, many (albeit white) women have very sentimental views of that book. And while white authors have written books (some rather important books might I add) portraying people of color for many years, the social climate has changed considerably. For that reason, it's hard to defend any white author writing from the perspective of Black characters today. There are far too many GREAT Black authors writing amazing books (stay tuned for tomorrow's post) that it's just not necessary. But to not mention it feels disingenuous.\\
\\
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I feel conflicted about it, even after hearing Stockett share her thoughts about _The Help_ controversy. She freely acknowledged understanding why it was controversial, but she rather than apologizing about it, she doubled down saying that she felt it was important to tell the stories of her home state to ensure they weren't lost to time. While she was being her authentic self, it felt like a missed opportunity to challenge the crowd to read books by Black authors for a more authentic account of those stories. \\
\\
**Bindery = My Favorite Thing Now**\\
\\
Shifting gears a bit here, I’ve been reflecting a lot lately about what role I want She’s Becoming Bookish to be in my life. How do I want show up in my spaces? What is this all for? Am I doing too much? Am I not doing enough? Why am I always hungry? You know, the normal questions everyone asks themselves. \\
\\
To be honest, I’m starting to feel a big shift happening in my relationship with my online life and with the books that I read. Whether it's grief or burnout, I've been feeling frayed on the edges lately. I feel a bit like I'm on a racetrack with no clear exit. There is always something to edit, write, reply, etc. As much as I love the community I've created, I have to be honest: She's Becoming Bookish is a lot of work.\\
\\
So, I think it's time I assign a value to my various platforms. I need learn how to spend my time wisely. It's clear after just a few weeks that TikTok is not like it used to be, so I don't know how much exclusive content I will share there. Youtube is a LOT of work, but it's been very rewarding for me, so maybe a bit more time there. Instagram comes and goes in terms of value add, but it's my first love, so I struggle to abandon it altogether. Because I've been in the mood to write, write, write, Bindery has quickly become my FAVORITE place to spend time, so it's fair to say you can expect a lot more content here in the coming weeks (sorry, not sorry). I've got big plans for this place, so I hope you stay tuned and upgrade (if it's within your means). \\
\\
**Social Media A-Ha Moment**\\
\\
This goes out to any of my book buddies that create book content online. I had an epiphany on the ride home the other night that I need to share.\\
\\
While at the book event, the host shared that Stockett is No.1 on Audible right now and No.2 on the New York Times bestseller list. So, what I'm hearing you say, Mr. Host, is that the audiobook is _more popular_ than the book? That opened my eyes: I am not creating enough content about audiobooks.\\
\\
Seriously, you guys, if you are creating content right now, _you need_ to be talking about audiobooks. There seems to have been a shift at some point the past few years, and now audiobooks are the norm instead of being frowned upon.\\
\\
I think we need to embrace audiobook content and STAT. So start thinking about ways you can showcase audiobooks more often. Things like "Top 10 Audiobooks," "LAST/NOW/NEXT Audiobook Edition," "If You Like This Audiobook, Try This One," etc. Let me know if you'd like a list of ideas to help you get started.\\
\\
Ok, so that's enough rambling for today. What did you think about my musings? Did anything resonate with you? Thoughts you want to share? Let me know below. \\
\\
I'm debuting something really fun tomorrow for my Book Besties tier, so stay tuned! And, of course, I'll be back on Sunday for a little reading update. \\
\\
In the meantime, happy reading!\\

[Hey book buddies,\\
\\
Happy Sunday! \\
\\
\\
\\
I READ A TON this week, but I can't tell you about it just yet. This week's update might seem a little cryptic, but I don't want to spoil anything about upcoming content. So bear with me. 🧸\\
\\
I finished **_Mad Mabel_**, and it was only ok for me. I think it's just a me thing though because everyone else has loved it. I enjoyed the way Hepworth played with the reader, dripping out clues throughout the book, but overall I was a bit underwhelmed. 3.5⭐️\\
\\
I **re-read a forever favorite** in anticipation of a new project and LOVED it just as much. I am not ready to share the title with everyone, but I did share with the Book Besties here on Bindery. Don't worry, I'll share with the masses VERY soon! 5⭐️\\
\\
I know y'all voted for _The Parisian Heist_, but I got distracted by **_The Giver of Stars_**. Still early into this one, but it's pretty good so far. It's set in Kentucky during the Great Depression and follows a young British woman who joins a group of pack-horse librarians. The audio is narrated by THE Julia Whelan, so I was instantly pulled into the drama. So far so good!\\
\\
I am about 60% of the way through with **_The Secret Society of Librarians_** and, honestly, I don't want it to end. It's 5⭐️ material, which is no surprise given how much I loved Thompson's previous work. If you in the market for a great WWII novel, this should be on your radar.\\
\\
Lastly, I did something I haven't done in ages! I went to the library and checked out a physical book, then read the entire book (all 510 pages) in 4 sittings. Spoiler alert: I LOVED IT! Luckily, I filmed the entire thing for a very special vlog for paid subscribers. Watch for that this week!\\
\\
I have every intention of listening to **_The Parisian Heist_** this week and starting my physical copy of **_A Founding Mother_**. I have seen a lot of great chatter about that one over on Fable, so if you're looking for a great community of like-minded readers to buddy read with, here's your sign. 😜\\
\\
In other news, I updated an old reading challenge over on the blog and wanted to share. I've been thinking alot about changing up my reading habits and figured that a good reading challenge would be a great place to start. **The Intentional Reading Challenge** is designed to help stretch our reading boundaries and expose us to new genres, authors, cultures, and places. Check it out and let me know what you think!\\
\\
**ICYMI:**\\
\\
- Get a sneak peek at my July TBR (Youtube video coming this week)\\
\\
- The Great California Bookstore Tour & Book Haul is live (sadly this flopped majorly on YT, so appreciate everyone who has or will check it out)\\
\\
- Don't miss this gorgeous copy of The Odyssey \\
\\
- Here's a quick review of a brand new American Revolution novel \\
\\

SO much new content is cooking that I can't wait for you to see. Paid Bindery subscribers should expect a new special edition reading vlog this week, as well as early access to the September historical fiction look-ahead blog post. Free Bindery subscribers can expect a list of books I recommend after reading _The Calamity Club_, as well as a _Yesteryear_ reading vlog and my July TBR jar pulls. \\

[She's Becoming Bookish\\

\\

[Ok besties,\\
\\
Writing this means spilling the beans on some upcoming content, but at the risk of my idea getting out there, I had to tell y'all about my most recent audiobook experience.\\
\\
\\
\\
First, let me set the scene. I just finished **_The Calamity Club_** and was in my feels. Upon reflection, I realized it made me nostalgic for another book, perhaps an even better one. Memory casts a golden glow over past positive reading experiences, giving them a shine that might not be as accurate as one might hope.\\
\\
Well, I thought long and hard about it and ultimately decided that I _had to_ know if **_The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood_** was as good as I remembered. For years, I told everyone this book was my favorite novel. I read this book in my youth (prob late teens) and felt it deeply in my old soul. But would it be as good as I remembered?\\
\\
So, I checked out the audiobook on Libby and dove into the familiar world of the famous Ya-Yas of Thornton, Louisiana. I knew almost instantly that the choice to listen was the CORRECT choice. Narrator Judith Ivey was PERFECT for this role. Her Southern drawl and perfectly accented French drew you right into Vivi's mind and heart. Before long, I couldn't put it down, making up chores that must get done this instant.\\
\\
Totally transportive with bright, vivid characters, this book is perfect for fans of Kristy Woodson Harvey, Elin Hilderbrand, Mary Kay Andrews, or Kathryn Stockett. The book follows 40 y/o Siddalee Walker as she sets out on a quest to unearth enough old hurts to better understand why she had such cold feet about marrying her beau, Connor. Her complicated relationship with her melodramatic mother, Vivi Abbott Walker, might have something to do with it. To better understand herself, she must first learn more about her mother's colorful history, rich with both bright and dark tones. So, she asks her mother to part with the one thing that might help: The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, otherwise known as her scrapbook.\\
\\
\\
\\
Sidda soon discovers the images and scraps of information in the scrapbook aren't enough to fill in all the blanks. Luckily, her mother's lifelong girlfriends show up with champagne, pecan treats, and endless stories. What Sidda learns about her mother, and eventually herself, is life-changing.\\
\\
As expected, this book thoroughly entertained me. I laughed, I cried, I got lost in memory, and I felt all the feelings. And unlike _The Calamity Club_, I got the MOST satisfaction from the ending. Full of nuggets of wisdom and Southernisms, _The Divine Secrets_ is the type of book that reflects images of yourself and the women in your life. Mothers and daughters are the main focus, but woven throughout is a love story unlike any other: the story of four best friends madly in love with each other. No, not _that_ kind of love. A purer type of love exists in the pages of this book.\\
\\
While my own mother wasn't as wealthy as Vivi, she lived _out loud_, just like her friends and many of my friends' mothers. Southern Women are unlike any other breed. We are charming, fun, and funny, but we are also deep wells of strength, perseverance, and persistence. And the women in this book are perfect illustrations of that dichotomy.\\
\\
Published in 1996 and set between 1993 and the 1930-60's, this book was an absolute time machine. Not only did it make me nostalgic for the 90s, but I also found myself reminiscing about my grandmother's stories about life in Louisiana in the early-to-mid century. In particular, there's a scene in which a very young Vivi recalls going to Atlanta to see the premiere of _Gone With the Wind_. It was not unlike the account my grandmother shared with me about seeing the film in theaters and the joy it brought her and her friends.\\
\\
Speaking of the _Gone with the Wind_ scenes, I can't lie and say that the book is without its problems, chiefly depictions of Black characters and race relations in general. There is definitely a romanticization of the Southern (white) way of life in the early 20th century. I recognize that and know that it could be problematic for modern readers. As I hope you already know, I feel strongly about amplifying Black voices and stories, so reading some of these scenes was hard for me. There are, at least, some redeeming sentiments in the rest of the book, reflecting on the unfair power dynamics and poor treatment of Black women. Sadly, I do think it is an accurate portrayal of a certain type of Southern sentiments at the time in which the book is set.\\
\\
\\
\\
While no longer my go-to genre (Southern women's fiction), I recognize how formative this book was in my passion for historical fiction and strong female main characters. I loved this re-read and relished the time I spent listening to the wild tales of Vivi, Teensey, Caro, and Necie. Told with SO much heart, love, and respect for these characters, Wells created something magical in this book (and series). She tapped into the secrets of womanhood, motherhood, and sisterhood that give shape to our lives and the world's we create.\\
\\
It's magic, I tell ya. Très magique, chère. ♥️\\
\\
Let me know if you enjoy this type of content. It's a little too personal for the blog and a little too long for social media. Bindery felt like the perfect place to share this review. But I want to know what you think!\\
\\
**_Coming soon..._**\\
\\
Stay tuned for a super secret project that I can't wait to reveal! I have about 200 pages left, but I'm blowing through them. 😜\\

You can’t tell America’s story without sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly.

So, in honor of America’s 250th Anniversary, I decided to zoom out beyond the American Revolution to tell the story of our country through social and political movements & events.

Books on this list vary from wildly popular recent releases to more obscure titles with some classic books and prize winning fiction.

What books would you add to this list?

Oh yeah, be sure to save & share!

[Hi there book buddies!\\
\\
\\
\\
You thought I forgot about the weekly reading update, didn't you? Nope! I just took the day off to celebrate my birthday. I'm 46 & fabulous, thank you for asking. 😜\\
\\
We slipped away to Sequoia National Park to tent camp for the weekend, and though I had every intention of enjoying my book whilst in the hammock the entire weekend, I barely finished a page. Instead we did a driving tour and a few short hikes, plus lots of time tending the campfire (it was cold, yo).\\
\\
Now we're back home and back to reality, though I'm finding it hard to focus on anything other than my current reads! Y'all suggested **_The Calamity Club_** as my next read, and, boy, I'm glad you did. The hype is REAL. It's SO good that I don't want to put it down, though I've been told to savor it if I can. I'm reading the physical book and listening to the audiobook, and, if I'm being honest, the audiobook is much better. But regardless how you read it, get your hands on this book asap! Now's a good time to tap into Audible (get 3 months free) since Libby holds on this book are going to be miles long!\\
\\
I've also started the new Kate Thompson, **_The Secret Society of Librarians_**, and, as I expected, I'm loving it, too. If you've read her other work, then I guarantee you'll enjoy this book. I'm only 15% of the way into my advanced reader copy and already there are SO many Easter eggs from **_The Little Wartime Library_** and **_The Little Wartime Book Club_**. Her WWII books are all full of great characters, found family, and tight-knit communities. 10/10 recommend \\
\\
Since my last update I finished **_A Great Act of Love_** and really, really enjoyed it. As I said in my most recent Last/Now/Next, it's a good one for adventure seekers. I especially loved the father/daughter connection in this book, along with the woman-reinventing-herself theme. Lately, I'm feeling the pull to be somebody completely new, so that really spoke to me. 4.5⭐️\\
\\
I finally got the chance to read **_The Original_**, my most anticipated Spring release, and, y'all, it had me wondering WHY I WAITED SO LONG!? If you love Katharine Hepburn or Cary Grant films, this is a MUST read. It was like watching a film, with the terse, quick exchanges and abrupt scene shifts between chapters. It was seriously good reading, but I have a feeling it will not be for everyone. 5⭐️\\
\\
Lastly, I decided to DNF **_The Correspondent_** for now. I tried reading on my Kindle and then tried audio, and neither format was speaking to me. It's a fan favorite, so I may try it again, but the dry narrative was a struggle.\\
\\
**ICYMI**:\\
\\

I'll be sharing a bunch of stuff on Youtube very soon, including my book haul from the Great Bookstore Tour (very overdue). Be sure & follow me there if you like long form content.\\

Thanks, as always, for being here! Until next time, happy reading. 🤩\\

[Poll:\\
\\
What should I read next? \\
\\
Oh hello stranger!\\
\\
I've been missing my book buddies, but I took some much needed time away to begin my grief journey. Thank you for your patience as I slowly try to establish something that resembles "normal." That may take some time, but these weekly updates are one of my favorite things, so was eager to dive back into Bindery. Let's catch up!\\
\\
\\
\\
I've been reading **_SO_** much the past several weeks, which doesn't surprise me at all. It's exactly how I coped when my mother passed in 2022. I'm not sure if you know this or not, but escaping into fiction is an excellent way to avoid reality. 😜\\
\\
Since we last spoke I've finished **9** books, hard DNFd **2** books, and soft DNFd a book I might go back to in the future. Many of those were audiobooks; I used to talk to my dad for 30-60 mins every morning while walking the dog, so it's been helpful to have the distraction of the audiobook to fill that void. Plus I haven't been creating as much content, so I've had extra time in the day to pick up my Kindle.\\
\\
Of those 9 books, some were absolutely incredible. Best of all, they are all VERY different. One was downright healing, possibly even life changing. So, let's start with that one!\\
\\
**_🧜🏻‍♀️ A Year of Marvelous Ways_** by Sarah Winman is being republished by Putnam (though it's not clear why), and I'm so glad to see it getting the recognition it deserves. In fact, I'm _thiiiissss_ close to crowning Winman as my favorite author. This is my third Winman book, and though it doesn't top _Still Life_ (as if anything ever could), it's absolutely stunning. Poetic, atmospheric, bordering on magical, eccentric octogenarian, this book is a MUST read. Keep in mind there are no quotation marks, but I have NEVER missed them in her writing. There's a flow and once you find it you won't even notice. ∞⭐️\\
\\
**_🦄 The Unicorn Hunters_** is the type of historical fantasy I'm always searching for! It instantly sucked me in, enveloping me in a sense of nostalgia for the books of my youth (mainly the Narnia collection). It's inspired an entire series that I'm already working on, so stay tuned! 5⭐️\\
\\
🧚🏻 If you watched my June TBR video, then you know that **_Thistlemarsh_** was the books I selected in response to the prompt "the book with the best spine." This cover is stunning, but that's about all that was stunning. It's a charming fantasy, but it's was a bit too much fantasy, at least for me. Maybe I just don't care for fairy stories? I've not found one that has blown me away. 3⭐️\\
\\
🔮 If you're looking for a spooky summerween story that won't scare you, **_The Fortune Tellers of Rue Daru_** is perfect for you! Ghosties, fortunes, seances, and charms abound in this fun coming-of-age historical horror. 3.75⭐️\\
\\
👑 I won't lie, I was a little disappointed in **_Elizabeth & Marilyn_**. Something just felt off to me about the way the author portrayed Marilyn. I'm still trying to find the right words to describe it, but let's just say Elizabeth's overshadowed her throughout the book in terms of presence and power. The Queen's storyline was by far the best part of the book. 3.75⭐️\\
\\
☕️ I don't care what anyone says, I still love WWII books. So much so that it's rare for me to not read at least one at some point throughout the month. **_The Daughters of Naples_** was a good story, albeit a little busy. Triple POV is hard to pull off, and I think the author came really close in this one. I felt the connection between this sisters and was invested in some of their storylines. The best part of the book was the exposure to life in occupied Italy. 3.75⭐️\\
\\
**_🦘 A Far-Flung Life_** was a tough book to read, y'all. It's hard to describe why without spoilers, but let's just say the main plot point was pretty icky. That aside, it's a really beautifully written book. It's a quiet, powerful character-driven story that brings the Australian outback vividly to life. 4⭐️\\
\\
🐙 **_Invasive Species_** was a fun spin on horror that I was hoping would give Widow's Bay vibes. Sadly, it didn't quite capture the brilliance that is our new favorite show, but it was still fun. Another book that would be perfect for summerween, this book is perfect for those who love a small town story with lots of unlikeable characters. 3.5⭐️\\
\\
👶🏻 I finished **_Where the Girls Were_** and immediately started planning a new Youtube video about historical fiction books that capture the pain and magic of the transition from girlhood to womanhood. This was superb storytelling that feels a little YA but packs a big punch. Loved how atmospheric it is! Terrific debut from Katz. 4.5⭐️\\
\\
Right now I'm listening to one of my June TBR jar pulls, **_A Great Act of Love_**. I'm definitely enjoying getting deeper into the story, but it's a bit slow, so I suspect some readers won't give it a chance. I'm also reading **_The Correspondent,_** and, so far, I'm not seeing the appeal. It's very, very dry. Maybe it will get better?\\
\\
As for what's to come, I honestly am not sure. I have a lot of writing to do if I plan to get my July look ahead content ready for July 1. My energy levels have been really low, so I'm not confident that I can pull it off. In the meantime, I'll just be over here reading to escape reality. ❤️\\

[Hi there besties, \\
\\
I'm finally starting to feel the urge to write, so I think you can expect more regular updates again. In the meantime, I wanted to share a little something that I wrote a few weeks ago but didn't have the guts to press publish. Grief is weird that way. This is for anyone wondering what those first few days were like and what happened to my dad. Thanks for your patience and support. ❤️\\
\\
**Even the Gator Knows**\\
\\
This month I'll turn 46 (the oldest I've ever been 😜), and it's also the first month that I'll be parentless.\\
\\
My father passed away this weekend, and I'm unwell.\\
\\
I'm currently sitting in his kitchen drinking coffee from one of his favorite mugs pondering where to even begin. There is so much to do, yet I feel paralyzed. It's as if I fear disturbing anything in his space will break the spell currently allowing me to hold myself together, albeit haphazardly.\\
\\
Like I told my newsletter subs, for the past 4 years he and I have become closer than ever. He relied on me for so much after my mother's passing, and, in turn, I learned to lean on him for support I once sought from her. We spoke near daily, often for extended periods of time. We spoke about everything (weather, politics, his health, my relationship, dogs, recipes, life in general), and it's those daily chats that I will miss more than anything.\\
\\
\\
\\
Barry was a wealth of knowledge, a born teacher who never got the chance to teach. A true Renaissance man, he could literally DO _anything_. Sculpt, paint, draw, play music by ear, sing, build, design: he could create like no one I've ever met. Sitting here surrounded by his pottery, paintings, doodles, and instruments, I know that I have a treasure trove of memories to sort through. And that feels both exciting and overwhelming. Buried treasure that will break my heart. \\
\\
I'm here in Louisiana for the week to set affairs in order and prepare the house for the next inhabitants. Seeing his space as he left it the day he went to the Emergency Room feels unreal. The half smoked cigar in the ashtray, the laundry in the hamper, the grocery list...all ripping me into tiny pieces.\\
\\
The truth is we knew this was coming; he had been suffering from advanced heart failure for a long time, with his symptoms worsening significantly since February. I was here to witness that struggle recently, so I know in my heart of hearts that his passing is a blessing. He's no longer struggling to breath or walk or any of the things that we take for granted every day.\\
\\
Still, the suddenness of his passing is jarring. I spoke to him in the morning, and he sounded in good spirits though a little short-winded. He volunteered to go to the Emergency Room to get checked out and within 12 hours he was gone. The worst part: I didn't make it in time to say goodbye in person. I was standing in line to board my plane at LAX when I got the text saying "he's gone." I'll be forever grateful to technology for allowing me to Facetime him so that I could tell him that I loved him (and hear it back) one last time.\\
\\
My sweet little daddy is gone. And I'm not ok. Sadly, I know from experience that I will be in time. One foot in front of the other. One day at a time. Deep breath. In. Out. \\
\\
\\
\\
And what's wild, even the gator knows. Every year, a new little alligator would turn up in the bayou out back of his house. And every year, he would throw the gator scraps so they would continue to hang around and chase off snakes. This year, he had a little 4-footer hanging around ready for a handout. He swam up the day I got here, hoping that I had something to share. He must have understood me when I told him that Dad was gone, because he hasn't been back since. Even the gator knows.\\
\\
**Update on the Gator**\\
\\
Eventually he did swim back up, almost a week later. But I'm convinced he knows. It's funny how sensitive you become to the physical world around you in those early stages grief. Everything seems so alive, pulsing with the energy you no longer have. Birds in flight, flowers in bloom...everything in nature reminding you simultaneously of the life lost and the life left to live. \\
\\
If you've lost someone dear to you in the past, then you know grief is a funny thing. It's heavy, and we all need a place to put it down for a while. Writing is one of the ways I like to do that. I appreciate you giving me space to grieve and share.\\
