[Okay, so I lowkey hate promoting myself 😂 but I recently updated my tier offerings and wanted to share them with you all!\ \ \ \ No pressure at all to upgrade your tier...seriously!! But if any of these sound fun and you want to join in, I’d be so grateful!\ \ Here’s the breakdown:\ \ The Reading Lounge (Free Tier) ✨\ \ This is where you’ll find my general posts, unhinged book thoughts, reading updates, and all the random bookish things I want to talk about!\ \ You’ll also have access to our Discord chat! (Which, I’ll admit, we need to use more 👀)\ \ Think of Discord as a fancy group chat where we can share what we’re reading, swap recommendations, talk about books, and hopefully build an actual little bookish community together!\ \ The Reading Nook ($5/month) 📚\ \ This is where the digital book club officially begins!\ \ Each month, you’ll get:\ \

Okay, so I did NOT realize this book was going to be this wild!!\ \ \ \ We have our main protagonist, who became deaf after getting sick when she was young. One thing I think this book does incredibly well is explore how Black communities sometimes navigate disability without making the story feel like a lecture or an obvious critique.\ \ Our MFC's parents never learned sign language. Instead, they got her hearing aids when she started school and taught her that the world wasn't going to make accommodations for her disability, so she needed to learn how to navigate it.\ \ And honestly...as a Black woman, I understand the complexity of that. It's already hard navigating the world as a Black person, but being Black and disabled adds another layer entirely. Sometimes it feels like there is no room to be vulnerable.\ \ But also...they should have done better. They should have taken the time to support their child and learn ASL instead of placing the responsibility solely on her to be "strong" and adapt.\ \ And I think that's a difficult conversation we sometimes have to have in the Black community. Sometimes the survival skills that helped previous generations navigate the world can unintentionally become the same things that prevent us from giving our children the support and softness they deserve.\ \ What I love is that the author doesn't force the reader to view this through one specific lens. She just tells this character's story, and the commentary is there if you're willing to sit with it. Which I did lol \ \ Currently, our MFC is engaged to a man who is not treating her the way he should be. And his parents?! HORRIBLE. This book will have you wanting to jump into the pages and wring someone's neck.\ \ What I was NOT expecting was our MMC.\ \ Because this man is...a lot. 😂\ \ He is confident, unapologetic, sexually liberated(this man is spicy friends), he's friends with illegal drag racers, and a successful business owner who truly does not care what people think of him.\ \ And when I first found out about his lifestyle, I was genuinely shocked because the contrast between him and our MFC is so interesting.\ \ We have this bubbly, sensitive Black woman who has spent so much of her life allowing people to overstep her boundaries.\ \ And then we have this man who says exactly what he thinks, knows exactly who he is, and refuses to apologize for it.\ \ This book has been the BEST surprise, and I'm so happy my Instagram audience picked it for me to read.\ \ I'm about 50% through the audiobook, and I am addicted.\ \ At first, the pacing was really fast, but then the author slowed things down and gave us time to truly understand both the MFC and MMC. That slower section was needed because now that we know these characters, the story is about to pick back up with some new information coming to light.\ \ Anywho...what are y'all currently reading?

Poll:\ \ How do we encourage diverse reading?\ \ I want to talk about a complicated issue without people assuming I mean the worst version of what I'm actually trying to say.\ \ \ \ I've talked about this on TikTok before, but I'm revisiting it because I don't think I articulated my thoughts clearly.\ \ And I want to be clear: I'm speaking specifically about being Black in the Black BookTok space, not about white readers or their experiences.\ \ I've seen comments on Black BookTokkers' accounts where people say they will unfollow creators who they feel aren't reading or recommending enough Black books. (And that's fair; people are allowed to follow creators who align with their values.)\ \ I've even had someone comment on one of my own videos asking, "What's the point of being on Black BookTok if you aren't making videos on Black authors?"\ \ But I've also seen posts like, "Me when I see a Black BookTokker who only reads Kennedy Ryan," or people saying they check a Black BookTokker's shelves to make sure they have Black authors.\ \ And I saw one black book content creator say that black booktokkers are mean. \ \ And it made me sit with a bigger question:\ \ How do we advocate for better representation without turning advocacy into a purity test that pushes people away?\ \ Because I want to be clear: reading diversely matters.\ \ Black authors continue to face systemic barriers within publishing that impact visibility, marketing, and opportunities. When someone has a platform, especially within the Black community, I do think there is power in using that platform to uplift Black voices and share these stories.\ \ But I also think we have to acknowledge that online, we only see a small piece of someone's life.\ \ We don't know their full lived experiences, what books they read privately, or what stories have impacted them outside of what they post.\ \ And sometimes I worry that we've lost some of that nuance. That we can reduce an entire person down to whether or not we see them reading or recommending certain books.\ \ At what point does encouragement become a test? Who decides when someone has read "enough" Black books to be considered someone who belongs?\ \ Because sometimes it feels like the conversation shifts from "let's encourage people to read diversely" to "are you reading enough of the right books to prove you belong?"\ \ And as someone who does read a lot of Black romance, I find myself conflicted.\ \ Because why do we keep creating these tests where if someone doesn't pass, they're pushed out?\ \ I understand the frustration. I understand the exhaustion of constantly having to explain why representation matters.\ \ But I also wonder if shame is the best way to create change.\ \ There are systemic reasons these books aren't always placed directly in front of readers. Sometimes finding new authors and stories requires intentional effort, and that work is valuable. But it can also be unfamiliar, especially when mainstream publishing has historically done a lot of the organizing and recommending for readers.\ \ So how do we create a space where people are encouraged to learn instead of afraid to participate?\ \ Because at the end of the day, I think we'd all benefit from focusing less on proving who is doing it "right" and more on continuing to uplift amazing authors and stories.\ \ I'm curious, what do you think?\ \ Join for free or login

Are We Turning Reading Diversely Into a Purity Test?

Babyyyyyyyy...let me tell you about Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan.\ \ I am about 80% through, and when I tell you this book is taking me THROUGH THEREEEEE.\ \ \ \ First, content warning: this book covers domestic violence, sexual assault, and trauma in very detailed ways.\ \ We follow Iris, who is a young woman navigating love, ambition, and the choices we make when we want to believe the best in someone.\ \ Iris is a beautiful, light-skinned Black woman, and colorism plays a major role in this story. She finds herself drawn to a man who, deep down, she senses has a darkness within him, but she ignores those instincts. As time goes on, their relationship takes a much darker turn as his controlling behavior becomes increasingly abusive.\ \ Meanwhile, our other main character is watching from the sidelines, hoping that eventually he will choose her.\ \ This book explores so many conversations that I honestly don't think we have enough of, and Kennedy Ryan doesn't give us easy answers. Instead, she guides us through the pain and lets the reader sit with the complexity.\ \ Conversations around colorism and privilege.\ \ Conversations around domestic violence and why leaving isn't always as simple as people think.\ \ Conversations around spirituality, family, motherhood, and the generational impact of trauma.\ \ Conversations around Hurricane Katrina and how deeply it impacted Black communities in Louisiana.\ \ Conversations around femininity and the ways women navigate using their beauty, relationships, and femininity to survive and create opportunities for themselves.\ \ And she weaves all of it together in a way that makes the story feel incredibly lived in.\ \ This book is HEAVY.\ \ The depiction of abuse is extremely detailed, and Kennedy does not shy away from showing the psychological and emotional impact of trauma. We are placed inside Iris' mind as she experiences these moments, and honestly...it was a lot.\ \ I wanted to throw up. I was shocked. I was not expecting Kennedy Ryan to go there.\ \ I had to take a break.\ \ But that's also what makes this book so powerful. It tackles topics that are often ignored or simplified, while allowing the reader space to wrestle with their own thoughts and feelings.\ \ This isn't an easy book, but it's an important one.\ \ Have you read Long Shot? What were your thoughts?\ \ Join for free or login

Why did no one tell me Long shot by Kennedy Ryan was this unhinged?!

Poll:\ \ What are your thoughts on Threads? \ \ OMG, when I talk about a lawless country, I am talking about BookTok Threads.\ \ I had no idea people got down like that over there! 😂\ \ \ \ There is drama daily, and sometimes it genuinely feels...manufactured. Like controversy is no longer just something that happens; it almost feels like it's part of the system.\ \ And honestly, I think this says a lot about how book communities have changed.\ \ Readers don't just consume books anymore. We consume personalities, discourse, and drama around books.\ \ Books have become more than just stories. They're attached to authors, influencers, opinions, identities, and communities. And when fandom becomes a public social ecosystem where attention is rewarded, things start to get interesting.\ \ Because being controversial sells.\ \ It gets engagement.\ \ It pulls you down a rabbit hole you didn't even know was in your walking path.\ \ One second you're scrolling past someone's fantasy recommendations, and the next you're getting tea on which author is sleeping with who. An author got caught using AI. An author is getting bullied, and people are defending said author.\ \ It's very wild.\ \ And I think that's also why I've stepped back from sharing my opinions as much as I used to.\ \ Not because I don't have thoughts, but because I've realized nuance is often lost online. A lot of people aren't necessarily looking to understand, they're looking to respond. They're looking to debate, argue, or prove why someone else is wrong.\ \ And sometimes I just don't think every conversation needs to become a battlefield.\ \ I tend to think in a more nuanced way. I believe people's feelings can be valid while also recognizing that someone's actions can still be harmful. Two things can exist at the same time.\ \ Now, if you ever want a place to share your unhinged opinions, Threads is definitely the place. But tread lightly because people get dragged there often. 😂\ \ And honestly, while I'm trying to build my Threads presence, I'm realizing I'm just not a super controversial person. Being on Threads can absolutely be a dopamine hit for the inner gossip girl in me, but I'm not sure if it's a place where I can build long-term traction.\ \ And tbh, reading has changed and the way we talk about books has changed.\ \ And I'm still figuring out where I fit into that.\ \ So I'm curious...\ \ What are your thoughts on Threads? Do you think book communities have changed?\ \ Join for free or login

Why didn't anyone tell me Threads is the Wild Wild West for Booktok?!

[First, THANK YOU to everyone who followed me over here and even signed up for Bindery 💕\ \ \ \ I know leaving one platform and joining another (especially one you may not know much about) is a lot, so I truly appreciate you being willing to come along with me. Thank you for being a part of The Nerdy Babe Community!\ \ So yes… I kind of stole y’all from my other platforms and dropped you into the Bindery wild west without any directions. My bad. 😂\ \ So… what is Bindery?\ \ Bindery is an independent publishing company that publishes amazing books and uplifts authors in the bookish space. They also created this literary community platform (the very one we’re on right now!) where creators can connect with their audience more deeply around the books we love.\ \ Also… did you know Bindery has an app? 👀\ \ The app is the easiest way to keep up with everything, imo! Whenever I post an update, you’ll get a push notification, and clicking it will open right into the app.\ \ \ \ A few things you can do:\ \

Can we talk about how elite the late 2000s and early 2010s were for reading? \ \ \ \ For a lot of us, it was a time of reading banger after banger across every single genre, from small-town romances to completely unhinged vampire and werewolf sagas. I devoured them all.\ \ I used to go to the library and spend hours picking out my books. Back then, we didn’t have algorithms, TikTok aesthetics, or a checklist of "tropes" plastered all over the back cover. You didn’t walk into the library looking for an "enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, billionaire romance with a 3-spice rating."\ \ Instead, you walked in, looked at a cover of a girl in a massive gown or a guy wearing a gas mask, read a wild synopsis, and took a gamble. Because authors weren’t trying to write to fit a specific internet subgenre or satisfy a marketing keyword, the stories felt organic. The angst and the intensity came naturally from the characters being pushed to their absolute limits, not because the author was trying to hit formulaic beats.\ \ Don't get me wrong, I love that we can talk and even laugh about tropes now, but somewhere down the line, reading lost a little bit of its magic. To bring some of it back, I made a curated collection of the chaotic, fun, romantic, insane books I lived for during the golden age of millennial reading.\ \ Head over to the Book Shelves tab to check out the full nostalgia trip and see how many you remember!\ \ And comment some of your fave books from that era!

Poll:\ \ Do you Tab/Annotate Fantasy? \ \ I’m currently reading The Knight and the Moth and this might be the perfect book to deep read.\ \ \ \ It's a gothic romantasy set in a more historical world (no phones, horse riding, all that) and HIGHLY detailed.\ \ Earlier this year, I tried the audiobook first and had to DNF because I genuinely couldn’t follow 😭 the language is so dense that you HAVE to slow down and actually sit with it.\ \ I honestly never 'deep read' fantasy books, but if I was, I’d be tabbing:\ \ – foreshadowing ( I feel like she's dropping so many hints)\ \ – little details that feel important\ \ – imagery \ \ – character growth\ \ this is one of those books where everything feels very intentional. No detail is just haphazardly thrown in.\ \ I lowkey wanna go back and tab the prologue because I just know there was a ton of important info there… it didn’t really make sense at first, but now that I’m deeper in the story, I can tell it’s one of those “it all comes together later” situations.\ \ This book is very mysterious, you kinda just have to keep reading and let the details build until you get the full picture.\ \ I’m reading it casually right now, but I already know I’m probably missing things that would’ve been so good to annotate 😭and I don’t think every book needs to be annotated or tabbed, but this one?? this would be SUCH a good series to do that with… especially since it’s a shorter duology.\ \ I’m not even done yet and it’s already a 5⭐️ for me… I might even like it more than One Dark Window

If you want a romantasy to annotate… read this

Books I really thought I was going to love… but didn’t 😭\ \ \ \ The Shield of Sparrows\ \ I listened to the dramatized version on Hoopla, and it was okay. A solid romantasy, but nothing spectacular to me.\ \ People were foaming at the mouth for this book on Tiktok!!! It's a good book for sure, but idk it just didn't connect with me. \ \ The middle dragged a lot, and it honestly felt like the author kind of forgot the plot. It read like a slice-of-life anime for about 100 pages instead of the heart-pounding, tension-filled, corrupt political system, plot-driven romantasy I was expecting.\ \ I’m on book two now (on audio), and it’s decent… but yeah.\ \ Just Our Luck\ \ This one just didn’t do it for me at all. It felt unrealistic, it dragged, and I ended up skimming the last 100 pages.\ \ I didn’t really like the MMC, he came off as mean and even though the beginning had potential, the story lacked real tension.\ \ Heat of the Everflame\ \ Okay… books 1 and 2? AMAZING.\ \ If you want high-stakes, crazy plot, slow-burn romantasy, this was IT. I was obsessed. Blown away.\ \ Then book 3…\ \ The author flattened all the characters. Our FMC is insanely powerful, but then she allows a man to literally spit in her face??? No, like that's literally a scene. \ \ \ \ She can wipe out entire continents, but she lets herself get bullied constantly. It just didn’t make sense.\ \ And the plot?? The solution is RIGHT THERE, but the characters can’t see it. It made me question their intelligence, honestly.\ \ Not to mention, the MMC turned into a sappy, love-sick puppy instead of the powerful prince we got before.\ \ Hated it.\ \ Plated Prisoner series\ \ I made it to book 4… and yeah, it was time to wrap it up.\ \ Looking back at my Goodreads reviews actually makes me laugh, because by book 3 I was already like “I don’t know about this…” and by book 4 I was DONE.\ \ The pacing slowed to a complete halt while the FMC processed her trauma. And I understand the themes, feminine rage, how patriarchy hurts everyone, but it was so heavy-handed.\ \ It wasn’t woven into the story. It took over the story.\ \ \ \ At a certain point, I was like… where is the plot? Where is the action?\ \ It felt less like high-stakes fantasy and more like a very long trauma-healing narrative with magic in the background.\ \ Fate of the Sun King\ \ This series gave everything but the kitchen sink.\ \ What started as high-fae fantasy somehow turned into a space odyssey… like there are literally aliens involved.\ \ The first book was so good, and then slowly but surely… we lost the plot.\ \ It started to feel like those old CW shows where anything goes by the end. Like… Dan Humphrey and Blair Waldorf dating.\ \ Just chaos 😭\ \ I really wanted to love these… but yeah.

[What is yearning… and why does it hit so hard?\ \ It’s that delicious tension in a book that has us all kicking our feet and giggling like children. It's that will they, won't there tension that makes want to scream and throw the book.\ \ \ \ It's the almost-confessions. The “I want you but I’m not saying it” energy.\ \ It’s longing stretched over time… and when it’s done right, it will have you staring at a wall after one scene.\ \ I wrote a full blog post breaking down authors who really understand slow burn and yearning (and yes… I included anime too). But here’s a little taste:\ \

Poll:\ \ Have you ever thought about book journaling? \ \ As you guys know, I am in a war with social media. Which is ironic given my brand. But I'm trying my best to limit the amount of time I am on social media, and one way I'm doing that is through my book journal, like I told you all before.\ \ This year, I stopped using Goodreads the way I used to and started tracking my reading in a physical book journal instead. It feels good to track things in an analog way.\ \ I do try to journal creatively, looking up Pinterest inspo and trying to recreate it in my own style. But I’m not going to lie… it’s not super aesthetic. Well, not all of it.\ \ Some pages are creative, feel like me, and are super pretty. Other pages are… flops. And it’s okay.\ \ \ \ The picture above is one of my favorites.\ \ I’m learning to just accept it and move on instead of trying to make everything perfect. I’m taking the layouts I don’t like as learning curves and trying to do better next time.\ \ Currently, I think I finally found a layout that works for me. But more than that… I’ve found joy and peace in slowing down and just getting my thoughts out on the page.\ \ I don’t know how to explain it, but sitting at my table, cutting papers and picking out different colors, printing images I think would go well on the spread… it’s healing something in me.\ \ And after I finish decorating and journaling, I feel calm. Like… really calm.\ \ And I’m lowkey proud of myself for creating something with my hands again. It feels like my own little masterpiece. Both the nice aesthetic spreads and the not-so-nice ones.\ \ This year I've read 17 books far.

My Book Journal Isn’t Perfect, But That’s Kind of the Point

This is for the those who feel a little… disconnected from themselves lately. Not fully lost. But not fully you either.\ \ These books helped me reconnect in different ways 🤍\ \ \ \ Only for the Week — Only for the Week by Natasha Bishop\ \ Janelle is a BIG people pleaser who never puts herself first. But with the help of Rome, she starts learning how to center herself and prioritize her own needs. Rome is gentle but still authoritative… literally exactly what she needs.\ \ Sweet Heat — Sweet Heat by Bolu Babalola\ \ This is book two, and we find Kiki in a completely different headspace than she was in college. Life has happened. She’s more unsure, a little lost, trying to figure out her path. Kiki feels like a fully realized, complex person here, and Malakai reminds her that she’s Kiki Banjo… she can do anything she puts her mind to. This book lives in my rent free.\ \ The Cinnamon Bun Book Store — The Cinnamon Bun Book Store by Laurie Gilmore\ \ Our girl is the manager of a cozy bookstore and a complete bookaholic… but she’s not really living her life. That changes when she meets fisherman Noah, who shows her that life is bigger than books, and a little spicier too. I really enjoyed this one.\ \ Restore Me — Restore Me by L. J. Segars\ \ Our main character has been touch-deprived for years after losing her husband.\ \ She hasn’t allowed herself to open up to love again. But her late husband’s best friend helps her remember what it feels like to be touched… and eventually, to be loved again.(This book is super messy, but healing.)\ \ If You Stayed — If You Stayed by Brittainy Cherry\ \ Kierra is someone who has accepted that life doesn't have to be amazing. Just good enough. On the outside, her life looks perfect. But inside, her marriage lacks warmth, and she’s weighed down by guilt from her past. Then someone she thought wanted nothing to do with her comes back into her life… and helps her realize she deserves the world, not just what she’s been settling for.

\ \ I just finished If You Stayed, and I’m not even going to lie… this book had me in TEARS. 😭\ \ Like, it was so emotional, but in a way that actually sticks with you. I kept thinking about it days later. \ \ Definitely check your trigger warnings, because there is some domestic violence and themes of grief, but it was amazing. \ \ I think what got me the most is how much I’m moved by character growth. Seeing someone truly do better? That will get me every single time.\ \ And Kierra… she was really just living on autopilot until Gabriel came back into her life and kind of woke her up in a way.\ \ I loved the pacing too. This was one of those books I could not put down. It moves fast, but still gives you everything you need.\ \ And there are SO many plot lines in this book. Everything is woven in so nicely. But somehow, she wraps everything up so neatly.\ \ I know some people might say it wrapped up too nicely, but honestly? I loved that. No loose ends, no confusion, just a complete story.\ \ Also, the way the tension is built??? Because you know Kierra caused something in Gabriel’s life, but you don’t get the full story until later. And those flashbacks mixed with present day???\ \ Yeah… chef’s kiss.\ \ And the writing is less on the flowery side, but it still hits emotionally.\ \ This was such a good read for me. Easily one of those books that reminds me why I love reading in the first place.](https://thenerdybabelife.binderybooks.com/item/POW9ozImdO2M3ovn1c8H/)

The way this book builds tension???
